Just to set your mind at ease, from the New York Times: You see, when involved in the give and take of Congressional politics, current Democrats are willing to vote for certain aspects of not only having a border but of enforcing it, especially as a reward for other things they care about, like amnesty....
  • Anti-Immigrant hysteria is out of control. In the words of Jose Antonio Vargas: “the un-whitening of America requires uncomfortable honesty and radical empathy”.

1.) Third and higher generation Americans includes both whites and blacks. How does the number compare to third and higher generation whites?

2.) Regardless, this is not an economic issue. This is a cultural issue. I would rather take an economic hit and keep my forefather's America than have Mexico Norte and a few extra dollars in my pocket.

What planet do you live on? The only hysteria I see is the left’s insane reaction to the enforcement of immigration policy and regulation.

    @Classical Liberal

All these sorts of "facts" on the superiority of immigrants relative to natives boil down to "immigrants are better than blacks".

Furthermore these "less welfare" "facts" are highly dependent on what is considered "welfare". Is free schooling considered welfare? If so then the answer becomes a firm "no".

Then if you move from just expenditure to the question "are immigrants net taxpayers or tax-eaters", then it's not even close. The Asians in general--at least the ones on salary where they can't easily hide their incomes--are net taxpayers. But the big Mexican/Central American/Caribbean "Hispanic" influx are overwhelmingly net tax-eaters. They simply don't have incomes high enough to pay taxes commensurate with their share.

Jordan Peterson is classic controlled opposition. They get a guy with an authoritative voice, and promote the hell out of him. The first stuff he says when he is building his reputation is 100% spot on, with some omissions usually. And then it's 90% right but 10% is a big, steaming pile of crap. Half smart people will say, "I really like a lot of what X says, maybe he's not 100% on all things but he says a lot of good stuff." And I'm like, no, you idiot, he's just another Judas Goat leading you towards the slaughterhouse.

ZAZ does this to good effect in movies like Airplane. They get actors with authoritative voices to start saying nonsensical stuff but in character, which makes the joke. In propaganda, they stay in character, tell the truth most of the time but work in lies when necessary, and the rubes once lulled into a false sense of security, don't question.

CATO logic: the Social Security system, paid for in whole by third-and-higher-generation Americans, from which low-income immigrants benefit the most, is welfare when the white middle class cashes in at retirement. This anti-migrant hysteria won't be ending until the entire population of those added to the US population since 1990 is stuffed in a giant Trump catapult and flung over the wall. So if Hispanics (ie Mestizos) are so successful than we can take away Affirmative Action, correct? The data from all kinds of tests is pretty clear: the children and grandchildren of low-skilled Latin American immigrants under perform the White average by a significant margin. Wealth production, IQ, every academic test known to man. IIRC, they have higher welfare rates than White Americans, but you're welcome to link to data if you think I'm wrong.

The White elites of Mexico are unloading their low-IQ Indio peasants on the US. Most of these people aren't bad, but most of these people aren't high achieving either. On top of that, the most common low-skilled job, driver, is on the verge of disappearing due to automation. We obviously don't need tens of millions of 93-IQ Indios, even if they do have generally agreeable dispositions.

On top of all this there's the matter of assimilation and national identity.

So no, we don't need any more of them and they don't improve our country.

The destruction of American jobs has taken place over decades. American workers used to do this work and can do it again, but the employer selected this location and created a culture for Mexicans. Do you expect workers who where forced out of their jobs 5, 10 or 15 years ago to be hanging around ready to jump in and take a job from such an employer?

Some of the people who would have filled these jobs have, indeed, become drug addicts or are in jail, or have simply moved on. So, I'm not going to cry for an employer who has to adapt to finally being forced to do the right thing by hiring citizens or legal temporary workers.

Meat packing plants in the midwest are importing African workers. Again, it's not that they couldn't find Americans to fill those jobs, they don't try. Some jobs will have to pay more, will have to make English speakers welcome, will have to show some loyalty to their work force before they can fill those positions with citizens.

Liberals support this kind of scab activity of undercutting workers' wages, but only when it comes to the white people they hate. As a liberal, I assume you support the unions, so it's kind of hypocritical to not notice that illegal immigrants undercut the nonunion working man. Oh, that's right, unions are like a big fence or wall that protects them from "unfair" competition. Good for them, bad for us.

Illegal immigrants have taken jobs from citizens I know who wanted and needed them. They have kept down wages for the working class. They have raised property taxes for schools. They have done plenty of bad. I only wish one had taken your job, whatever it is.

Cactus, TX is an American s**thole. I used to have the city government as a client and worked there twice a year. In addition to the slaughterhouse there used to be a tanning company; I don’t know whether it is still operating. Its rendering plant was the foulest smelling facility I’ve ever been in.

The city’s waste water treatment facility had to take on all the waste that went down the drain from the slaughterhouse and tanning facility. The waste pond had a layer of scum that was literally a foot thick that had to be dredged several times a year by an outside contractor. Their nightmare fear was falling in, which they viewed as a fate worse than death.

The town’s entertainment venue was a bar, the name of which was Satan’s Palace. I’m not kidding. I don’t remember seeing it the last time I drove through town.

Towns all over the Midwest were sold a bill of goods in allowing slaughterhouses to be built. Most of the promised jobs went to illegal aliens and the increased tax base was more than offset by the rising costs of police, public schools, and social services, while the quality of life took a huge nosedive. Crime, litter, illegitimacy, and drug use all went up; social trust went down.

Smart towns have learned their lesson; I read about a couple of small towns in Nebraska that said “no thanks” to slaughterhouses in the last few years.

Believe me; no reader on this site would want to live in Cactus. It has been absolutely ruined by immigration, both legal and illegal.

Oh, and one bad thing done to me by an illegal? How about the one who ran a red light and broadsided me? He had no registration, no license, and no insurance. I had no recourse and have had 20 years of pain and medical bills from the neck injuries I sustained.

And then there were the two burglars that hit my apartment when I was in college. At least one of them was an illegal, if I remember correctly. I got in a knock-down, drag-out fight with one of them, while my roommate took off after the other. That resulted in my getting kicked through a bannister and a very nasty sliced artery in one leg that curtailed my activities for a couple of months. At least that one had a happy ending; my roommate brought the one he chased back to our apartment, where we presented the gospel to him. Then we drove him home on the way to the hospital to get my leg patched up. The other run returned the next day and we presented the gospel to him. Both made professions of faith, joined a Spanish speaking Baptist church, and made restitution to our landlord for the damage done.

Two of my adult kids have also been hit in vehicle accidents by illegals , both with no license and no insurance. My daughter still suffers 15 years later from the back injury she had as a result. My son was the only one who received any compensation; he took the guy’s wallet and took out all of the money to help with the deductible on his car. My son had gotten out of boot camp about a month before and still felt two meters tall and covered with hair, so felt perfectly at ease shaking down the guy.

These points are completely insubstantial since some places since the main reasons for both of those places being bad is unrelated to their concern for racial homogeneity/the proportion of white people.

    3. Intelligent white people would leave a racially homogenous America
This seems very dubious to me. In such situations people, of whatever background generally gravitate to their own side. The author cites some non-Jewish Germans who fled Nazi Germany, but this number was clearly insignificant compared to the total German population.
Secondly intelligent white people very much like living in very white areas whatever their political views (e.g. suburbs, Oregon).
Thirdly, the alternatives would be unattractive; I very much doubt that many white people would want to live in the rump ethnic portion of the US (especially given the people living there would hate them) or a third-world country and it's not guaranteed that Australia or Canada would accept them.
Fourthly, the IQ difference between conservative and liberal whites is not so vast that even if all whites left it would significantly reduce the nation's intelligence
    http://anepigone.blogspot.fr/2008/11/politics-and-iq-conservative-democrats.html

    4. There would not be intelligent non-white immigrants
There are many places with few Asian immigrants that managed just fine without them (e.g. Iceland)

    5. Creating an all-white state would require a civil war
This isn't necessarily true. Americans move extremely frequently and non-white Americans are in very large part recent immigrants without deeply rooted attachments to their land.

6.An all-white state created via ethnic cleansing would be an unpleasant place to live.
There are several points about this. The first is that the proper comparison is not to the US as of today, but of a majority non-white US. There's good reason to think that this would be an unpleasant place to live. Firstly, majority non-white, non-Asian places are almost always unpleasant places to live, secondly ethnically divided countries (at least those with significant ethnic resentments, as a future US would have) are very often unpleasant places to live and thirdly it is unpleasant to live as a rich, intelligent minority in a non-white country.

The second is that, even if it were in the short-term (e.g. a decade), there's no reason to think it would remain so. Ethnically homogeneous countries (Germany, Japan, Russia) have been able to bounce back within decades from utter destruction (contrast diverse Lebanon/Iraq).
This is relevant to the comparison; a choice between living for twenty years in a poorer but then recovered white state, or living as a hated, shrinking minority in a non-white state for the rest of your life (as will your children or grandchildren). This is without even weighing the importance of your people's continued existence or their annihilation forever.

You can tell how great a piece it is because it contains the line:

Richard Florida has been following smart Americans around for a long time, and he has repeatedly noted how they like to live in diverse places.

First of all, no they don't. They like living in places where they can control how much diversity they're exposed to, and what kind of diversity it is. You don't see too many of them voluntarily moving to the barrio.

Second, I can't see the actual Florida article, but he appears to be talking about cities as a whole. As you and Noah Smith and Richard Florida know perfectly well, a city as a whole can be diverse, whereas the places people actually live are often quite segregated. If you were around here more often, you'd know how often we make fun of famous pro-diversity people who choose to live in nearly all-white places as soon as they get some money saved up.

Plus, does it actually ring true for all types of diversity? Where do you think your stereotypical smart person would prefer to live? Vermont or Mississippi? Washington state or Alabama? For nearly all of American history, the deep south was the most racially diverse part of the country, and I don't seem to recall the intellectual class flocking to live there. What they typically did, instead, was mock the people living there as backwards and ignorant, without getting into too many details about who it was who actually lives there. You see this even today, when libs talk about how violent places like Louisiana and Mississippi are, and just sort of assume that this is all because of dumb rednecks (note: it isn't).

I think what Florida actually found was that smart people like to live in wealthy areas, which also attract a lot of wealthy immigrants. To which I say "Well, duh.".

I also can't help but wonder why he thinks it is that famously diverse countries like Brazil aren't technological wonders. But I realize asking for that level of honesty from Smith would be too much.

Smart people like Smith make assertions like the ones in the linked piece all the time, because they're certain most people don't understand that coorelation does not necessarily imply causation. So they get away with making purposely misleading statements all the time, e.g. smart upper middle class people seek out diversity, rather than noting the direction the arrow really points, which is that diversity seeks out prosperous upper middle class people. Now, those upper middle class people may live in close proximity to "diversity," but they erect all sorts of barriers, both seen and unseen, so that they can pick and choose when and how they experience diversity. In their kids' private schools not so much, but you know, affordable nannies and gardeners and maids are de rigueur, along with interesting ethnic restaurants, the kind that Frank Luntz enjoys.

And Smith obviously did not think things through when he wrote that any sort of "ethnic cleansing," i.e. partitioning would necessarily be violent. White flight to the suburbs in the 50s and 60s was anything but violent, and there is no reason to assume a similar migration today or in the future would be otherwise. Now, if the government steps in and actively prevents people from moving, or uses policies like Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing to force the middle class to absorb large numbers of poor, dysfunctional people into stable neighborhoods, then yes the chances for friction and confrontation go up.

First, a simple observation: Racial homogeneity is no guarantee of wealth. Don't believe me? Just look at a night photo of North Korea and South Korea:

Uh, yeah....being a totalitarian hell-hole does tend to hold nations back.....

OK, so North and South Korea are an experiment. They prove that institutions matter - that a homogeneous society can either be rich and happy or poor and hellish, depending on how well it's run.

MMM, how much straw can a straw man argument contain?

Alt-righters explicitly call for America to be a white racial nation-state. Some cite Japan as an example of a successful ethnostate. Japan is great, there's no denying it. But I know Japan, and let me assure you, an American Whitopia would not be able to be Japan. It definitely wouldn't be Sweden or Denmark or Finland. It couldn't even be Hungary or Czech or Poland. It would probably end up more like Ukraine.

Dunno. Lots of people would be quite satisfied with the racial percentages that we had in, oh, say, 1960: White:88.6% (Anglo White:85.4%).

From what I've read, the USA in 1960 was doing pretty well....

So here's the thing: Smart Americans have no desire to live in a Whitopia.

Were smart Americans fleeing the USA in 1960?

There's a clear precedent for this: Nazi Germany. Hitler's persecution of Jews made Jewish scientists leave. But it also prompted an exodus of non-Jewish scientists who weren't Jewish but who didn't like seeing their Jewish colleagues, friends, and spouses get persecuted - Erwin Schroedinger, for example, and Enrico Fermi. This resulted in a bonanza of talent for America, and it starved Nazi Germany of critical expertise in World War 2. Guess who built the atom bomb?

Last time I checked, Latinx Mestizos don't really contribute much to the USA STEM-wise....

Throughout the entire article he consistently makes an error in his thinking.

He argues that an all-white America would be impoverished by the loss of its immigrant intellectual over-class. Nowhere does he discuss the effect upon our society wrought by the recent immigrant underclass.

He argues that were the Trumpian countryside to separate from Hilary's cities then, since the bulk of America's wealth is generated by an urban intellectual value-adding elite (himself!), the homespun ignoramuses of Ohio, clinging to their economy based on brute manufacture of big chunks of steel would fail to hold their own as one of the world's premier manufacturing and trading partners. They would falter and starve.

To back up this line of reasoning one would think that he would demonstrate that American lathes can no longer turn out symmetric, balanced, finely polished driveshafts for ships or precisely balanced turbine blades for electric generators but "one" would be disappointed. Instead he points to the opioid epidemic that currently plagues just those areas hardest hit by deindustrialization as evidence of the fecklessness of our working class, their helplessness when cut loose from the benevolent rule by their coastal urban overlords.

He doesn't see the opioid epidemic as a consequence of the policies enacted by union-busting scab labor imported by Hilary's Elite.

He shows himself to be living in a bubble, far removed from the concerns of the people he writes off. He doesn’t give a hoot about them--worse, he actively wishes them ill. He regards them as a true underclass--untouchables. What else does "deplorable" mean if not untouchable? The entire article is an exercise in malevolent wishful thinking reflecting the mindset of this new generation of information-age, social gossip-rich, skills-poor billionaires.

What kind of moron thinks that America was not a leading nation in innovation that produced plenty of wealth long before the arrival of today's wave of immigrants?

Just another know-nothing, humble genius who believes that without people like him, the world would turn to dung.

As German recovery from WWII amply demonstrates, Germany really didn't need the Jews in order to run an advanced economy and create prosperous society. (What was done to Jews was wrong and inexcusable but that's entirely a different matter,. irrelevant to the argument made by Noah).

In the exact same way, America was doing fine without Jews, Hindu and Chinese. Many of these newcomers are indeed quite talented, competitive and contribute productively. Still, they also contribute significantly to an increasing lack of cohesion in the society. Chances are quite high that that a small differential between the select new elite and native whites fails to compensate for the existing discord. Ergo, in a long run American whites would be better off running their own society for themselves.

Argument from authority is not a strong one in these parts. Economists have some blind spots on this topic, one big one of which is the HBD angle.

While it's true that a lot of prosperity in human history has been built on various forms of low-wage labor, these have always taken advantage of disparities--between in and out group, between free and slave. The direction the world is moving in is the elimination of these disparities. In a future theoretical world in which development is more evenly distributed, there won't be any more growth blood to be squeezed out of the disparity stone. That means current growth strategies are unsustainable, and people ought to be figuring out other ways to organize the economy. A utilitarian like Bryan Caplan ought to realize that.

A lot of the debt is actually held by the public sector too. Net debt is about 140% of gdp. Again, not hugely different to the US.

And there are advantages to a falling population on a crowded island - their housing costs are declining. Japanese used to live in tiny apartments - that is now changing.

The main point, of course, is that Japan is Japanese and is going to stay that way.

While acknowledging that Japan's economy has problems, these have less to do with its declining population than with the rise of China. Just like in the US and Europe, the decision to increase unskilled immigration is accepting long-term impoverishment for growth gains in the short-term.
