RSSThe article doesn't support the implication you seem to be making that most Puerto Ricans are what mainland Americans would consider white:"The average Puerto Rican individual carries 12% Native American, 65% West Eurasian (Mediterranean, Northern European and/or Middle Eastern) and 20% Sub-Saharan African DNA."I have met a few Puerto Ricans whose phenotype was virtually indistinguishable from that of one of various European countries. In the vast majority however the African and/or Carib influence on phenotype was immediately noticeable. They would never pass for "white" in mainland United States, regardless of whether you, yourself, think they "should." There are individual Puerto Ricans of more or less unmixed white European lineage, but on the whole the country is very mixed, and that mixing tends to show quite readily in their phenotypes.
No, those figures are based on testing. See the link from Truth.
Regression toward the mean is a trend, not a force that "kicks in." It does not describe a simple, random or linear progress. In real life, the implications of the trend for any individual member of a set tend to be far quirkier than you imply. With respect to predictions it is a mistake to blindly graft statistical analyses of a large whole to small subpopulations or much less particular cases, especially if such cases or subpopulations have ways of remaining isolated from certain more "mean" members of the larger set. Your position here betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of the concept, in particular of subpopulation mean differentials. Steve has an article from 27 January 2013 that touches on the subject specifically with respect to IQ.Replies: @CJ Carrión Acevedo
Regression to the mean should’ve kicked in by the second/third generation, especially with the British Jamaicans.
That is just one sample. One would have to question where it was gathered, what was the social class of the people who participated and if it was done on the island or the U.S. of A. There are many samples with varying degrees of admixture available from sources such as 23andme, dnatribes, gedmatch.com, etc,. The average PR on dnatribes admixture resutls for Puertoricans yielded the following results: scored 9% Sub Saharan, 13% Native American and 78% West Eurasian. Other samples in gedmatch yield higher west eurasian. I score a bit higher west eurasian and my Y dna is related to Sephardic Jews from Spain. I am as common an islander as it gets and, truth be told, our scores are significantly more caucasoid than most Latin American countries.( I live between PR and Spain, my fianceé is Castillian, and nobody ever knows I am not Spanish until I open my mouth.)That will change though with the nearly 400,000 dominicans currently living here. Our racial diversity and heterogenuity does not have anything to do with failing grades, iq’s or anything of the sort though. It has more to do with colonialism, corruption in the framework of governance institutions and poor child rearing, also a partial a consequence of previously mentioned considerations. I see racism is still alive and well in the US of A. For further discussion on Puertorican genomes contact me at [email protected], or visit abf anthropology forums.
Most of us from the middle class and higher classes have always studied in private schools. My SAT scores were significantly higher than the average so called white american. Yes, we do have a significant amount of the population that tests poorly on standardized excercises, and we need a complete overhaul of the Department of Education. However, this is just a partial representation of what we are. I am pretty sure that the IQ of the average catholic private school student is on par with the average so called white american. I mean, there is a lot of significant empirical data that shows how UPR Mayaguez is basically a top source for recruiting engineers (Military Industrial Complex, Public and Private Utilities Corporations), and that students from UPR Humacao, as well as UPR Rio Piedras, serve the food industry (microbiologists), the biomedic and bioengineering industry, as well as the pharmaceuticals sector. First we must deal with growing inequality in order to fix the public education system. That implies dealing with a generalized corrupt framework of governance institutions. It is lovely to see the subtle racism in the comments of anglos though.
Not so "subtle." It's explicit--at least by today's politically correct rules; and they're not "anglos" except in the sense they speak English as their first language. Most people who follow this blog, do believe that races differ in their genetic profiles, and this includes mental inclinations and abilities. Obviously every nation and race has people ranging from dim to quite bright, but the "average" (despite the fact that every child in Lake Wobegon is above-average) is what makes the society. These differences probably occurred for evolutionary reasons. The reality is neither good nor evil, and no one is to be blamed or praised for inheritance. It simply is. There is no moral judgement. And most people think their own race is awesome in some way or other. I know quite a few "hispanics," (variously mixed), who wouldn't want to be anything else. Opinions on genetic influence vary, but are based on large- scale, long-term observations of human behavior and achievements, with reference to those very large, extended families called races.
It is lovely to see the subtle racism in the comments of anglos though.
