  • Pleased to announce that Ben Sixsmith has hired me as golf-course-architecture correspondent of Deadspin, which will now exclusively report on cricket and golf. Deadspin used to specialize in servicing the needs of people who hate sports but want to read sports-adjacent woke punditry, all 29 of them. For example, here is an early 2019 Deadspin...

Off Topic: Do we know which modern population is closest to the Yamnaya, aka Indo-European, aka Aryans? I mean the group that came from the Russian Steppes and pretty much killed all the men and took the women of the older European population?

Which group today has the most of those fierce genes?

And which modern group is most like the original farmers, the older population of Europe, who watched their men be slaughtered and women ravaged? Has any modern European group retained a sizable genetic component of those early Europeans?

    Replies: @Alastair Trumpington

Of European populations today, Lithuanians/Baltic people in general share the most ancestry with the ancient Indo-Europeans, and Sardinians share the most ancestry with the early European farmers.

  • I have an idea, you guys tell me if it’s stupid or not.

What if there were a gene variant that increases fitness if expressed in men and decreased fitness if expressed in women? Or vice versa.

As a silly example- gene x gives both men and women bigger breasts. That might hurt men’s reproductive fitness and help women.

What if the ‘gay gene’ worked something like this?m: If your daughter get the gene variant she behaves in a more traditionally feminine manner and somehow ends up having more kids. If your son gets it he is more effeminate with some increased chance of being gay. Over the long term, it could balance out so that the frequency of the gene variant stays stable over time.

    Thoughts?

In the natural state man has been beset by homosexuality since, roughly, forever. Even if you don't believe the Bible being the true Word of God, you have to admit the Book of Genesis is at least four thousand years old. To describe Sodom and Gomorrah the writer had to have some contact with an advanced level of, ahem, "gay culture". The ancient Greeks certainly had different and conflicting ideas on the practice and propriety of it, but it was well described, at least several hundred years before Christ.

But homosexuals have always been a tiny minority and though they often had a disproportionate influence they were never really in control of things-except in a tiny number of places where things didn't turn out well in short order. Healthy societies may leave homosexuals alone but they don't let them run things and keep them out of positions of real power and influence.

I predict Apple Computer will be a massively reduced company or not exist at all in a decade or so based on nothing more than Tim Cook being 1) incapable of having created what he runs and 2) yes, gay. There are many other reasons, too, but I suspect 1 and 2 are sufficient. Time will tell if I am right or wrong. But I'm not buying Apple stock.

I might hire a known homosexual for a job in which homosexuals typically do well but I would not hire one for any position of serious responsibility or in which he or she might have to interact with what I consider vulnerable members of the community. That's probably actually illegal, or would open me to civil sanction were it publicized. So be it.

It does seem that female homosexuality does differ in the respect that it's much more situational than the male version. I have female family members that had dalliances with "being lesbians" then "straightened out". They have stayed straightened out. They are grandmothers now and their grandkids have no idea and I hope it stays that way.

Men who are gay stay gay. My church has had a gay-man-to-straight ministry for some time and my private thought is that it wastes everyone's time and annoys the gay, so to speak. Worse, some of these guys have "gone straight" and married , fathered kids, then "fallen off the p***ywagon" (sorry, I know it's a sin, but I couldn't resist that mixed metaphor!!) and went back to rump rangering leaving a devastated wife and kids in a bad situation to say the least. I don't have the answer, there probably isn't one. Maybe the Catholics were half right-make them priests, but in an order with little public contact instead of diocese priests around all that pubescent chicken.

They are always calling for genocide. They've been pretty open about it for while now. Confronted there are all these word games, because they aren't--yet--actually calling for camps. If you’re Jewish in America, chances are there’s at least one Uncle Bern somewhere in your family tree. As the scholar Ruth Wisse noted last year in Tablet magazine, Jewish intellectual life in the 1930s and 40s was largely defined by one’s stance toward one thing: The Party.

And yet, these same people are the ones who freak out if you deviate from the narrative even a little bit today.

A tiny handful of others — including atomic spies Julius Rosenberg, David Greenglass, Harry Gold and Morton Sobell — betrayed America’s most important military secrets to Stalinist Russia and did incalculable damage to the country and the world.

There's a problem with this. Ashkenazi Jews went through a population bottleneck. Let's say you have a small cluster of high IQ individuals who went through that bottleneck along with another cluster of Jews who carry the genes for these diseases. The descendants of the people who went through the bottleneck will have a mix of both sets of genes, but this still doesn't mean that correlation equals causation. The genes might not have anything to do with producing high IQs.

Do non-Jewish Askhenazi whites with high IQs have these diseases? I've never heard that they do to any particular degree. But if the same genes that make Askenazi Jews smart are the same genes that make non-Jewish high IQ whites smart, then how did the latter avoid the diseases? Unless there are entirely different sets of genes that can make different populations groups smart, I'm not sure there's any connection between these diseases and IQ.

Why? Richer descendants for those who breed later, maybe, but surely less numerous ones.

Women who are raised in today’s western society do not have children in their teens and 20’s as their ancestors did. Their reproductive window is effectively narrowed to a much shorter time period. It is not as easy for a 38 year old to get pregnant as it is for an 18 or 28 year old. Women go through menopause at different ages. So, a woman who is predisposed to early menopause may well educate herself out of the gene pool whereas her ancestors had no problem at all having 5 kids before age 35. A woman who can have kids into her 40s is not punished by nature in the same way.

Of course this only applies to people raised in Western societies, middle class and upper class, etc. you can get around the whole thing by starting to have kids at 18. But that doesn’t invalidate my point

  • @inertial
It's an interesting eugenics experiment. Women who a able to have (first) children late are women with naturally younger bodies. They age slower than average, so their biological age is less than the calendar one.

If they age slower they live longer, on average.

Due to associative mating the children of such women will marry each other... and have children late.

Repeat this for a number of generations and you will have bred a race of humans with unnaturally long life spans.

If there is one trait that is guaranteed to be undergoing positive natural selection in our current society and environment, it is the ability to have children later in life. Conversely, women who are genetically predisposed to early menopause are undergoing incredibly strong negative selection.

Menopause of any sort has probably been being selected against since after the hominid ancestor whose social structure was patriarchal bands where young females then left and joined other relatively unrelated bands.

Read about humans, killer whales, and short-finned pilot whales. These are the only species where the females lose their ability to reproduce well before the end of their natural lifespan.

It has been a question for evolutionary theorists for many decades, what did infertile females contribute. The hypothesis was a "granny effect" of course, the problem was no one could ever demonstrate the effect or influence of one.

Until some research recently into orcas and short finned pilot whales, who also have male dominated bands and the young females leave and join other unrelated bands.

Pretty big news, actually, demonstrating a granny effect.

It is amazing how rare female menopause is in nature but how much we take it for granted in our human population.

Isn't another problem with the H1-B program that the workers are contracted to the companies that bring them over and cannot leave that job? The companies keep them on fairly short contracts that can be canceled at any time, and if they are canceled, the worker has to return to India.

I agree. I always thought the h1 b visa should be ‘worker centric’: a company can sponsor someone to come in, but once the worker is here are here they can get whatever job they want for the next five years. Would incentivize companies to not use visa holders like indentured servants and pay them competitively to keep them from being poached by the competition. This would limit h1b numbers but with a workers rights spin.

Not really, most H-1B work is crap work like software testing and simple coding. Those guys don't get paid a lot no matter what happens. Nor do they have any specific skills that are in demand that only they posses. This would not in any way cause a drop in the use of H-1Bs. You are assuming that if a company cannot abuse an H-1B then they won't hire one. The fact that H-1Bs are willing to be treated like crap as it is and they keep on coming means an employer can come up with other ways to abuse them and they will still take it to get the job.

The U.S. constantly flogs itself because of our history of slavery, and yet today we have present American employers taking advantage of H-1B workers and illegal immigrants by paying them below market wages, knowing that these employees have limited or no other options. At some point in the future are we going to have to hear about our evil legacy of H-1B and illegal alien employees?
