North America, which was far less sparsely populated than Central America
Yes, recent estimates put the population of North America north of the Rio Grande at about 2.5 million at the time of European contact.
The largest pre-Columbian settlement in the present US-Canadian land was Cahokia at about 5.000 people, or maybe as high as 12,000 including economically linked areas. It was completely abandoned hundreds of years prior to Columbus.
Looks like on the immigration graph, the arrow is misplaced. Trump was president through Jan 19 of 2021, and the arrow is placed at the start of the covid pandemic in March or so of 2020.
Naomi Klein, a leftist, wrote “The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism,” which explored the idea that natural disasters are used to advance the interest of the powerful, coordinated, and long-term-minded investor-class. She argues that a disaster induces several things: the immediate migration of people away from the point of disaster leaving land uninhabited, a media-led description of suffering that demands that the government “do something” right away and that no amount of money be spared to do so, and finally a corporation that will step in to address all of these problems: they will accept unlimited amounts of money today to promise to end the suffering tomorrow, they will also accept an unprecedented degree of help from the political class in changing law to expedite their “solution,” all the while laying stake to a claim on the land and property abandoned by those who fled.
Though a leftist, some on the right would see echoes of this in the governmental response to covid: dump billions on Moderna, JnJ, Bio-N-Tech to develop vaccines, which are urgently needed (but not urgently enough so that research can’t be halted before the 2020 presidential election so-as not to boost Trump). Also, rewrite the electoral laws in almost every state, and push those changes through bypassing the state legislature in the name of expediency.
Fair, but I have a minor, semantic quibble, one which reflects on the pro-Democrat paradigm of mainstream "news" and electioneering. You don't "handle" a border like a pilot "handles" a 707 or a bull rider "handles" a bull. You just enforce it. Period. Whatever you think of America, the border is there, or at least it's supposed to be. I don't care if you're a socialist or a finance capitalist: We start with a border that people can cross on very specific business with very specific paperwork and then they go back. Full stop. (Remember, legal immigration, assuming we want any, does not really take place at the "border": It involves filing in paperwork, followed by entry, usually through an airport.)Sure, there could be policy differences - "handling" issues - in terms of whether we shoot invaders or not, but there is no "handling" going on with this administration. It's just an all out war to get as many people in as possible until the optics get too bad, and even then add another 10 million.Replies: @ARandomHuman
Trump and his party have put enormous focus on immigration and on President Biden’s handling of the border as the election draws closer
You can handle a crisis. You can judge how well Biden is handling the border crisis.
The phrasing works, but for the dropping of a critical word.
Yeah, my point is a little squishy.
You can handle a crisis. You can judge how well Biden is handling the border crisis.

So, hey, do you all remember that time that Trump ran for president and lots of people hated him and said bad things about him? And then he won the presidency, and for four years, those same people still hated him and said bad things about him? And how after another three years those same people STILL hated him and said bad things about him? And how only then, heading into the primaries, every major news organization reported on how EVERYBODY believes that Trump smells using anonymous sources? And how strange it was that nobody ever noticed this in the past 9 years, but all of a sudden, it became THE biggest news story IN THE WORLD? And of these anonymous sources, there were loads of them who all decided on the same day to speak off the record to various media companies about this saying not that he has occasional BO, but that rather say “I’ve heard from a reliable source, that Trump smells of soiled diapers, Axe Body Spray and hotdog burps.” And how after that day, nobody ever talked anymore about any smells?
That was really weird. It’s funny how this can gain traction but the numerous public appearances of Biden looking and acting in no way like a competent head of state can’t.

Old Video Resurfaces Of Trump Saying Presidential Candidates Under Indictment ‘Shouldn’t Be Allowed To Run’
June 2, 2024As Donald Trump resists calls to drop out of the presidential race, old video footage has resurfaced showing him saying that any presidential candidate who is under a federal criminal indictment “shouldn’t be allowed to run.”A social media post from MSNBC anchor Joy Reid reminded everybody of Trump’s penchant for self-serving hypocrisy following his criminal conviction last week after a New York City jury returned a guilty verdict for all 34 counts in a criminal trial in which he was accused of illegally paying hush money to a porn star via illegal means for political purposes.Just days before the 2016 presidential election – and days after then-FBI Director James Comey announced the reopening of a federal investigation into Hillary Clinton’s handling of classified documents on her private email server – Trump fearmongered during one of his infamous rallies about the prospects of the Democratic nominee winning that year’s presidential election.Trump – who was earlier this year found guilty of fraud and still faces two more criminal cases – suggested that Clinton could end up under federal criminal indictment and said the prospects of having a president under such legal scrutiny, including a possible “criminal trial,” would have a devastating effect on the United States, particularly governmentally.“If she were to win this election, it would create an unprecedented constitutional crisis. In that situation, we could very well have a sitting president under felony indictment and ultimately a criminal trial,” Trump said to groans from the audience. “It would grind government to a halt. She shouldn’t be allowed to run.”

Um, this man drove his car at 12mph tops in the direction of elderly Haredi Jews (perhaps the least athletic people on the face of this earth) and never got within 8 feet of one.
If someone wants to use this video to claim the driver has a hatred of Jews, I agree.
If someone wants to use this video to claim intent to maim or kill on the part of the driver, no way.
I remember back in the day that if you were to tear down a poster “raising awareness” for missing Israelis presumably captured 10/14, you would be doxxed on twitter accounts and people would go after you in your home, and after your job.
Isn’t this sort of the same thing?
“could reasonably be construed as amounting to, a rejection of diversity, equality and inclusion policies”
Not even kidding, I initially read this as “could reasonably be construed as amounting to, a rejection of diversity, equality and inclusion politics.”
First, the number of known serial killers is way down from a peak in the ’80s and ’90s.
As your last article points out, it often takes decades to correctly identify and attribute murders to a particular serial killer. For the kind of serial killer that does not kill all their victims in a single go, they can only kill their subsequent victims as long as they remain clear of suspicion, or at the very least, not imprisoned.
Think of people like Bill Cosby, Jeffrey Epstein, R. Kelly, Jimmy Saville, Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, and others, who had rumors swirling around them concerning sexual misconduct for decades before they were actually called to account for their actions.
One absolutely fantastic story of chutzpah comes from the story of “Norris Vitchek”, a pseudonym used by a real-estate speculator who wrote a confessional about blockbusting, or exploiting “white racism” to make money. He positively gloats all the way through the article about how he takes advantage of “white racism” to enrich himself. He laughs at the white dupes that thought themselves able to trust a “fellow white man.” He has a well-organized coterie of investors that can provide him with nearly unlimited funding, and he can organize with them in secret to act in a coordinated manner to achieve maximum effect.
https://www.saturdayeveningpost.com/wp-content/uploads/satevepost/Confessions-of-a-Block-Buster.pdf
This person was most probably Mark J Satter, a Jew. He blockbusted white neighborhoods to acquire property at below-market rates, he lent to blacks to buy the properties at over-market-value, and he repossessed the properties when blacks failed to pay their mortgages, and acquired the properties for himself and his investors, then became an urban slum lord. He posed as white, screwed over blacks and whites alike, and is now remembered today as a “civil rights activist.”
The second part of this saga is his daughter who now is earning money off of publishing the memoirs of her father, a “civil rights activist.” She writes that “the ghettos of America’s largest cities are the consequence of large impersonal economic forces,” blaming the damage to black families on redlining. The grift continues.

I read his columns for about six months even though I found him needlessly offensive, wondering why on earth he would be so repellent in some columns and seemingly reasonable in others. Then, I read one of his columns that explained that he considers himself funny. This is humor. I swear even after six months of reading I never thought he was going for “funny.”
Four presidents have been assassinated out of 46 (Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, JFK). Reagan was shot. GHW Bush had an attacker pin him against a podium before the Secret Service could step in. Pretty much all the recent presidents have had credible assassination attempts. Huey Long and RFK were leading presidential candidates who were assassinated.
Being president is a pretty dangerous job.
One example is when Inuit whale hunters were temporarily forbidden to hunt whales because scientists thought the whale population was declining more than it really was.
It seems more common that disagreements of this type are motivated by either the desire to continue to practice cultural traditions, or sometimes, to profit at the expense of others. Not by the application of scientific method, data collection, and reason– or even by some non-Western facsimile of such methods.
For example, there was the 2020 Mi’kmaq lobster dispute, where First Nations people in Canada wanted the right to harvest lobster for commercial sale out of season. Or the events depicted in “the Orchid Thief,” where a white man was put on trial for hiring a Seminole to harvest endangered species of orchids for him.
Watch out though, I think some corporate conservatives could get behind this line of thinking– by hiring a team of indigenous scientists and paying them big bucks to revisit the issue of anthropogenic global warming– possibly coming up with a conclusion based on indigenous ways of knowing that is more accurate than what all these so-called climate scientists think.
Almost 60 scholars in the newly created CBIKS, and not one of them is Black? That’s a little racist, don’t you think? Especially since the first indigenous people in the world were Black in Africa.
So far as modern science can demonstrate, the Blacks! in Africa are the only actual indigenous people anywhere.
since the first indigenous people in the world were Black in Africa.
Jesus Christ. My first response to Brittany Sauer was that a BMI of 31 wasn’t so bad. Just barely into “obese”. But, no, it’s 31-stone– or 435 lbs.
That there is any sort of perception circulating that it is possible to be “healthy at any size” up to and including 435 lbs is insane.
Statistically, suicide is another possibility for “unexpected death” with “no suspicion of foul play.”
Also, sounds like there was a “good guy with a gun” here that had every right to shoot to kill as this poor man was having his head stomped. But then he’d have to face a Columbus jury. Woke-ism may have cost the victim his life.
I’m sure this was caught by a store security camera. Odds the footage ever sees release to the press?
So, the incremental effect of the Black Lives Matter movement just since 2020 has killed more black people every year than have whites in 115 years of lynching.
Over three years, the number of excess deaths has reached 17.7 kiloTills.
Astonishing.
Over the past several thousand years there has been strong selective pressure in favor of high intelligence.
Ecologically speaking over this timespan, I don’t think “ability to do physics” was selected for– rather the ability to charm, persuade, manipulate, flatter, and lie convincingly were far more important than what we think of todayof intelligence in an IQ sense.
Maybe ‘Advertising account managers’ are not so low IQ as you imagine.
If you ever turn on the local news, and hear someone talking about “the community”, in my city that basically means black people.
“They should have sought input from the community.”
“The community does not entirely trust the police.”
“We need a solution that takes into account the needs of the community.”
“Our politicians need to be more responsive to the community.”
White people, though they slimly form a plurality in my city, are NOT “the community.”
But rich blacks who own property, as well as poor blacks being squeezed by ever-increasing rents, both of these groups together constitute “the community.”
Blacks tired of crime in their neighborhoods together with blacks who are tired of being hassled by the police simply because they spend their days merely hanging out on streetcorners that are known and established open-air drug markets are both “the community.”
Good point. Could it be that the Racial Reckoning already happened and crushed Ibram X. Kendi's dumb ideas? We’ll have a racial reckoning.
Ibram X. Kendi Says a Backlash Has ‘crushed’ the Nation’s Racial Reckoning.
No, just the opposite. It’s been going on for a while, but now critical race theory is being baked into the structure of everything.
Universities know that the supreme court may rule soon on the legality of use of race to make admissions decisions. Both prestigious undergrad institutions and med schools have been electively declaring that they will no longer submit GPA and test scores to US News and World Report and other groups that rank colleges. This means that there is no longer a penalty to an elite college for admitting applicants with less-than-elite GPAs and MCAT scores, or SATs.
But if GPA and MCAT becomes less important, what is becoming more important?

Your DEI (diversity, equity, inclusion) score.
Now, these initiatives are only starting to be put into place in the Ivy-ish school I work for, but they have already been adopted in many ways going all the way up and down the chain– and making things explicit is only a formality. I kid you not, in my hard sciences department, one recent (white male) PhD graduate had an entire chapter in his dissertation devoted to black hair.
Is there a difference between Dutch and German burgher class and the Russian shtetl-Jews?
Many of the most accomplished US Jews are of German descent, and many of the Israeli Ashkenazis are post-USSR-collapse emigrates.
If the school were 10% black and 90% white, it would still be the case that mathematically, the shooter were more likely to be non-white than white.
Mythinformed MKE’s twitter is already suspended (for daring to disagree with Ibram Kendi?). That was fast.
Yes, a hammer to cathedral windows– that would be awful. Or even worse yet, a torch those cathedrals. Imagine if someone were to burn down, say, Notre Dame? What a loss that would be!
In the US, immigrant Africans from the same geographic areas that supplied the trans-Atlantic slave trade look down on this sort of nonsense.
Somehow, coming from a place that has far less wealth, opportunity, and basically no social safety net to speak of provides a certain perspective missing from our native-born population of African descent.
It used to be that most Apefrican Americans were sourced from West Africa, from what is now Nigeria and Ghana but also substantial numbers even from Namibia. Having noted that, it is hard to see what basis the new arrivals from Apefrica have for looking down their noses at the behavior of legacy Apefricans. After all, it is hardly the case that their home countries are crime-free.To take one example, at 21.99 per 100,00, Nigeria today has a third highest murder rate in the world, after Honduras and El Salvador. Of course, the modern Apefrican immigrant may be comparing his home country with Chicago, where the murder rate in 2020 was 28.6 per 100,000, but Nigeria is still a cesspool of murder, rape, robbery and theft.
In the US, immigrant Africans from the same geographic areas that supplied the trans-Atlantic slave trade look down on this sort of nonsense.
Political instability, citizen alienation, terrorism and violence define the Nigerian crime scene. Nigeria has recently been included among the countries with the least peace in the world, according to the Global Peace Index. It is the 18th less peaceful state. In addition, Nigeria is the sixth country most affected by terrorism, based on the Global Terrorism Index.
https://www.statista.com/topics/7491/crime-in-nigeria/There is no difference between the new Apefrican-Americans and the old ones. And let's not even start on the Somalis, Congolese, etc.
One further serious threat in Nigeria is the risk of mass killing, or genocide. Nigeria is the second country in Africa with the highest risk of genocide and the sixth worldwide. This risk is influenced by a population of over 200 million people, a high child mortality rate, ongoing battle-related deaths, the country's own history of mass killing, and its ethnic fractionalization.
These refugees need housing, medical care, food, clothing, education, jobs, and some discretionary money.
As far as Massachusetts goes, Martha’s Vineyard is one of the least densely populated areas until you get to the far western hinterlands of the state. There should be plenty of space to let them live.
As far as wealth goes, Martha’s Vineyard should be the most easily able to provide these things. But, apparently, for an island of 17 thousand people, with a population density of 1 person per four acres, accommodating 50 refugees is too much to ask.
Not to mention, that it is one of the most wealthy places in our country, and thus most able to support a mere 50 people.
I do not understand what you are calling evil, and I don’t understand what is good.
Is it good when the most privileged among us refuse to care for a mere 50 people, but obligate the poorest of Americans to welcome, host and care for people in similar situations by the million?
I wonder, if you search for “tribal African villager”, will you get images of a white man in a grass skirt standing outside of a mud hut?
