The replacements are primarily visual and audible in nature now, but tactile stimulation is just around the corner. In fact, it has already moved passed the seminal (heh) stage. The percentages of men who have ever paid for (or have ever been paid for) sex is on the decline: Orthogonally, I suspect it unlikely anyone...

    @Achmed E. Newman

It would NOT take Apollo-program level spending. Engineering of sex bots is right in the wheelhouse of modern technology

It's not really a matter of having to design sexbots that are "just as good" in a strictly mechanistic sense. Plenty of women make do with vibrators and plenty of men make do with porn. As far as simply getting off is concerned people are prepared to accept a good deal less than "just as good" as the real thing.

The real breakthrough will be robots with which you can have an emotional relationship. I read a book some years ago which pointed out that given that people generally have no problems forming emotional relationships with pets there is no reason why they won't be able to form emotional relationships with robots. You don't need a robot with anywhere near human levels of intelligence. If you can build a robot with roughly the intelligence of a dog and with roughly the same capability for emotional response as a dog then people will form emotional bonds with such robots. They will fall in love with such robots.

The robots don't need to be incredibly human-like. Dogs are not incredibly human-like and they can't talk but millions of people love their dogs. A robot that is better than a dog at communication with humans should be well and truly achievable.

Such robots would be not mere sexbots. They would be, in a crude sense, lovebots.

Now please don't jump to the conclusion that I'm advocating any of this. I simply think that it's quite likely to happen.

    It's not impossible!

Women are likely to be a huge market for sexbots (or at least robots that combine the functions of sexbot and companion robot). Realistically there are immense numbers of middle-aged women who are going to be facing lives of total emptiness and loneliness. Robots that offer something more in the way of sexual satisfaction than a vibrator and something more in the way of companionship than a dog are going to look pretty attractive to many of those women.

I think they'll change almost nothing.

What's the difference between a sex bot and a prostitute? In both cases you're paying to simulate a romantic experience with a woman. (Well, maybe not all that romantic.) In both cases you know it's not really real, and in both cases, most men would feel a little ashamed.

Because of that, most men today aren't availing themselves of prostitutes. Sex bots won't be any different. People just assume that they'll change things, because they're robots, and they're from the future. They've imbibed the spirit of the age.

If the sexbot can cook, clean, and satisfy a man sexually, and make sandwiches; then the primary ways a woman could compete for a share of a man’s resources would be to demonstrate superior moral values and child rearing abilities. Total game changer. If not, then it’s just an expensive fleshlight, and not important.

There's no reason that a sufficiently advanced robot couldn't do all those things, although it's worth bearing in mind that people have been waiting for robot butlers for a long time, and may be waiting even more.

But my point remains: there's no reason a man couldn't pay a woman to do all those things today, but by and large they either don't, or they do, but still get married anyway, and usually to a woman who offers more (or less) than her moral compass and parenting skills, i.e. a good-looking woman, if they can.

Donald Trump can afford maids, cooks, and prostitutes, but he still married a supermodel. Were there no homely-looking chicks of better character to be found?

Even if they were more than an expensive fleshlight, sex bots would still be no big deal.

    Bollocks.

I eat incredibly healthy for much cheaper. Breakfast is eggs or cereal and milk. Lunch is leftovers or whole grain bread and peanut butter. Dinner, you can get a the club pack of meat when it goes on sale. Freeze the portions you don't use. Eat meat every single day for dinner. Buy canned beans, canned fish for $1 per can. Frozen (un-breaded) fish is also cheap. Buy rice and pasta. Basic fresh fruits (apples, bananas) and veggies (sweet potatoes, brocolli, lettuce) are usually cheap. Price match.

This comes out MUCH LOWER calories/dollar (not to mention nutrition) than eating shit like McDonalds.

I hate it so much when idiots whine that they "can't afford" to eat healthy. The cheapest possible meals are sacks of potatoes, beans, and rice. You're just a fat lazy fuck that can't be bothered to cook.

Progress is not a disease. It is a powerful cure, that will kill the patient if not dosed properly, rather like radiation to treat cancer

Reminds me of the old joke about a man visiting his cancer doctor, who regrettably tells him that it is progressive.

This is a bizarre line of reasoning. I call it the “radical fallacy,” that is, the idea that it is not possible to ameliorate the negatives consequences of a phenomenon, while preserving its salutary aspects, without eradicating it completely.

Yes. Other ideas can be tried - but none are proven.

The idea of artificial wombs scares me, but stopping women from having to suffer 9 months of pregnancy would surely increase the number of children they choose to have.

Polygamy might also help, but that's not personally how I see the "good society". I imagine it isn't how most people see it either. (I did enjoy the first episode of the Netflix show "Sister Wives" - they seemed very well-adjusted.)

Maternity pay for 5 years after birth would also surely do it, but that would be extremely expensive.

There's plenty of other ideas but it does seem that women are dissatisfied with the majority of men and that this dissatisfaction, whether deserved or not, is a fundemental barrier to building a society with continuity.

    Replies: @Rosie, @Rosie, @Cloudbuster, @14WordsToFreedom

Polygamy only works if there’s a consistent way to kill off most of the male children born. Otherwise you end up with 20% of the men with 99% of the women, and 80% of the men with nothing to lose and no hope to gain.

Another outlet for the consequences of polygamy is war. Spare males become cannon fodder for conquest - they either die in the process or end up with "a damsel or two" from the said conquest.

Either way polygamy is destructive civilizationally in the long run.

“I’m not on board with the Joo monomania polluting a lot of right-wing comment sections but even I don’t understand why pointing out that AIPAC does what AIPAC clearly and officially does is somehow anti-Semitic.”

It’s very simple: Jews operate by having a strong ingroup preference, in societies where the majority doesn’t have an ingroup preference. Then they hide their identities to obscure their group identification from their hosts. It’s like a secret society, it only works when it’s a secret. So pointing out that they are a) not part of the host society, and b) part of a secret society, which c) is exploiting their host society, spoils the game and puts them at danger of being made to leave once again.

It’s yet another case predicted by Goebbels:

The Jew is immunized against all dangers: one may call him a scoundrel, parasite, swindler, profiteer, it all runs off him like water off a raincoat. But call him a Jew and you will be astonished at how he recoils, how injured he is, how he suddenly shrinks back: “I’ve been found out.”

Usually, if something helps you better understand the present and predict the future, you can consider it “true,” even if you don’t like the truth.
