RSSWhy does anyone care? Wasn’t the goal to get Bin Laden and then move on?
Why can’t the West just up and leave Afghanistan? It’s not like we cared before Bin Laden made it our home base. It’s not like we care now. Finally, someone has some sense and is getting the West out of this quagmire. Some Westerners have already seen the writing on the wall and gotten out. It’s about time the rest of the West does too.
I’m sure in this modern age, we’ll be able to keep a broad enough watch on Afghanistan when the Taliban takes over (if anyone doubts this, they’re smoking the really good stuff from the poppy fields) to have drone snuff anything out before it gets anywhere. Ideal? No. Realistic? Sure seems like to me. And it will be so much cheaper in blood and treasure than the continuing imbroglio we have now.
It’s the Taliban’s country. Let them have it.
What is this blasphemous nonsense? How dare this author (hack is more like it), claim that the way to raise wages is by raising wages. Doesn’t he know that the way of Wal-Mart is the way of business today?
Anyways, why do these people, who constitute the 47% of which Mitt so rightly derides and dismissed, deserve any attention at all? Let them wallow in their relative poverty and be happy for what crumbs fall from the table.
Someone get this heretic into the stocks where he rightly belongs!
Mr. Leach,
With respect to your answer to Joe above, I must say ZING!
That was a good one.
Yours truly,
The Wet One
It will be most interesting to hear the commentariat on this topic. It will be most informative in my view.
As for the topic of the article itself, I think that there is a great deal of truth in it. The story shapes the reality that individual humans or groups of humans live in. I’m glad to see that others understand this as well.
Yeah, I object to human rights too. I think that drone ought to be sent to your home Mr. Gottfried and flatten it and every inhabitant in it just because I felt like it. Damn you and your laws and your society and beliefs. Whatever, I don’t care. Destruction ought to be rained down upon you because I felt like it and you’re annoying and make me feel uncomfortable.
Who needs human rights, least of all you, anyways?
Am I right?
Fear has made the U.S. government an agent of evil. That is not really saying anything we didn’t already know though, is it? The question is, can anyone actually act to turn the tide back from the descent into evil? That’s the real question.
For my part, I am not confident that such a person exists at this time.
Hmmm….
For a supposedly learned writer, Mr. Unz is pretty dumb.
So it goes…
Just to add some context to the discussion I’ll leave this with all my fellow readers here:
http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2013/05/the-dark-art-of-racecraft/275783/
and I’ll ask that you reflect on the last 100 years or so of history and the concept of “race” and all its wonderful gifts to humankind.
AC,
I note how significant the Panther’s have been in oppressing people because of the melanin content of their skin. Their record is impressive. Very impressive indeed.
Especially when one active chooses to ignore every other instance in recent history, to say nothing of the history of the United States.
Make sure you don’t walk off any cliffs with those blinders on AC. I wouldn’t want you to get hurt.
Here’s one more reason why this debate will be moot and completely irrelevant:

Imagine having this discussion with a sentient computer in future. I suspect no human will have much of anything to say. Not very much at all…
Does anyone else find the “White Race” whiners tiresome? If they’re so worried about being overrun and outbred here, why don’t they go there and beat the terrifying “Other” on their own turf?
Seriously…
That idiotic, ahistorical, nonsense is getting old. But I suppose it must be tolerated. Just like all the other idiocy running around like a herd of hippos these days.
So depressing…
I don’t think enough people are concerned about the degree of spying going on in the world today.
Why does the U.S. government keep tabs on me? I don’t know, but I’m none too happy about it. I like to visit from time to time, but now I wonder whether I should go and submit my person to the tender mercies of the U.S. security apparatus?
It is alarming.
And it’s the same thing with every state on earth.
Where and how can I hide? Why should my snark and ill thought out posts on the web indict me for all eternity?
Perhaps the Internet is not the great thing I thought it was. Every sword has two edges…
