"namely, that Christianity was at the root of Europe’s post-1450 intellectual preeminence"

Before the Renaissance the most impressive intellectual achievements were made by the ancient Greeks. So the two best efforts in that direction were made by essentially the same people, Europeans. If that were a coincidence, it would be a big one. The ancient Greek effort was made before Christianity came into the existence. So I think it's the hardware, not the software. In other words it's the people themselves.

What made Europeans special? I think it's interesting that the farming zone extends much further to the north in Europe than in the Far East. The north of the Far East is the Mongolian and Manchurian steppe, pastureland. Above that is Siberia.

Low population density of farmers up in the European north, people on isolated homesteads having to battle against the inanimate forces of nature more than against other people, this slowly selecting for a specific kind of mindset - that's my guess as to where science ultimately came from.

I've listed some reasons for thinking that the Greeks were conquerors from the north before, but here's another one:

The word laconic comes from Laconia, the part of Greece where Sparta is located. Ancient Greeks loved to tell jokes about how laconic Spartans were, the same sort of jokes that modern Europeans tell about Finns.

As a person of nearly 100% Mediterranean background I think I can say with some authority that none of us are laconic. I've never heard anyone accuse any native Mediterranean people of that. Which is just another little thing that tells me that ancient Spartans, Dorians, and likely Greeks in general, were newcomers to the region, like the Brits at Gibraltar now.

    Replies: @iffen, @RolfDan, @Bliss, @Hellene, @anon

My feeling is completely the opposite – there is no one more laconic than Mediterranean people. A Greek villager, or a Palermo cafe goer, will always be 100 times more laconic than a loud British tourist.

Are You Starting to Figure Out Why We Can't Have Nice Danish Things?

No, I don't think they will ever figure it out. At least they will never admit it. It is similar to people who search for 'good schools' when purchasing a home, but will never admit they don't want to send their kid to a school with a black student population in excess of a certain threshold.

What I find interesting is the high correlation I've noticed among whites in America wanting socialism and their ability to be able to notice things that you aren't suppose to notice. Whites of various ethnic backgrounds who support Canadian-style healthcare and Scandinavian-style social welfare benefits generally seem to either deny or despise the topics we discuss at iSteve.

On the other hand whites who notice what you aren't suppose to notice, and who discuss topics discussed on this blog, generally don't support the social welfare state.

Why is that? There are obviously exceptions. I suppose the whites who don't want the giant social safety net have arrived at their position because they have already thought through the difficulties of having such a safety net with a large NAM population. This might explain why Europeans of all political stripes seem to support social safety nets, at least until Merkel ruins their countries.

    >the dumbest dogs are the Congolese Basenji and the Afghan Hound

They rank just below the (Russian) Borzoi, the (northern Chinese) Chow Chow, and the (English) bull dog, so if you're trying to correlate canine IQ with the IQ of the people who originally bred it, it won't go the way I think you're implying.

Besides, according to the wiki on Coren's book, the "ranking focuses on working and obedience intelligence" and that will handicap hounds, terriers, and guard dogs who are bred to think for themselves as opposed to waiting around for the master's command. The Basenji is barely domesticated -- it may know that you want it to sit and stay, it simply won't care, at least not to the extent a typical Lab or a German Shepherd might. Likewise, the Afghan Hound is selected not for obedience, but on the contrary, having the independence and drive to race ahead of the hunter. (Same goes for the borzoi, which is a closely related breed.) Intelligence is an "expensive" trait from and evolutionary perspective, and doesn't emerge unless it confers an advantage, but there are many guarding/fighting/hunting breeds whose intelligence is not key to their usefulness.

Wolves have larger brains than dogs do, and are generally regarded as being as smart or smarter. But they likewise aren't bred to be obedient to people, and they're not going to do well on Coren's ranking either.

Some people have claimed that the whole Apple / Federal Government standoff was a crock. That the Feds had other ways of cracking the phones, or that Apple really did help them but pretended not to. I don't know if that is true or not, but I don't think it's implausible.

The Japanese Red Army was scary nuts. They kind of seemed like they had been made up by a sci-fi writer: they were led by a woman, traveled halfway around the world to kill random civilians (e.g., 17 Puerto Rican pilgrims to the Holy Land) in a cause to which they weren't much connected.

  • Any intellectual explosion comes from a dam breaking. A population that has been separate before, but is highly educated, suddenly breaks the dam and transforms everything in its path.

Christians in Europe started the proto-universities of Europe. Studying scripture sharpened their minds, and eventually the dam broke and the love of learning spread into the secular world, with associated scientific revolutions.

The same happened with the Islamic golden age. And from the 19th century, there has been a Jewish wave. The dam was broken by Jewish Emancipation, and all those centuries of Torah study had prepared the Jews for the secular world of ideas.

The Chinese dam is breaking with its opening up to the west, as the Japanese did after WW2. Like the previous waves this will change all of us, but will also fade in a century or two. Perhaps a North Korean wave will occur soon.

The West and especially whatever it is that passes for Christianity and Catholicism today would do well to get over its erroneous belief that scripture -- by which I assume you mean Old and New Testaments -- was such a singularly important and major source of scholarship and learning. Cicero (106 - 43 BC), Virgil (70 - 19 BC), Livy (59 BC – AD 17), Ovid (43 BC - 17 AD), Plutarch (46 - 120 AD), among others, produced writing that pre-dated or coincided with the Vulgate and that influenced European thought-leaders and academics.

  • The contemporary version of Merck is the Sackler family, who have pushed OxyContin to America and the world. The Sacklers seem to target the white working class. Part of the reason they have evaded scrutiny is that they have wormed their way into the largely left liberal art world. In the UK, they have a foothold in nearly every major gallery. In Washington DC, they have a gallery near the Holocaust Memorial Museum. If there was justice, each of their galleries would be turned into memorials for those they had murdered.

Not just OxyContin--also Valium and Librium.

I read (and fact checked) that psychiatrist Arthur Sackler brought the patent rights for Valium from Europe to the US. He was named to the Medical Advertising Hall of Fame for having come up with enough ways for doctors to prescribe Valium that it became the first drug to make $100 million in sales, and later $1 billion. Redefining doctors as pushers in the process, which was the real lucrative development (monetarizing information relationships with doctors).

Not that Sackler was alone in this type of endeavor:

    http://www.mmm-online.com/features/40-mvps/article/35472/

Mr. Unz's argument regarding the newsmedia's ignoring of Vioxx is parallel to there never having been a good investigative study of how many lives were ruined by Valium addiction, either directly or through gateway or parallel other addictions. Nor other benzodiazepenes. I seem to recall Stevie Nicks getting interviewed about this a few years ago--that she came off cocaine to get addicted to Klonopin afterwards, because she let her friends talk her into going to a shrink, who drugged her.

But this also all fits with the melding of "news" and public relations in the past 50 or so years.

    https://www.propublica.org/article/pr-industry-fills-vacuum-left-by-shrinking-newsrooms/single

(Note how in the comments to that article Jack O'Dwyer argues that lobbyists, not PR people, are controlling information flow.)

It would be interesting to dig behind the corporate facades of the relatively small cadre of pharmagarch families who make these decisions and skim hundreds of billions in profits.

When I worked as a civil servant, every last move I made, every last dollar I spent or signed off on, every last memo I wrote was subject to public oversight. With the proliferation of (often malicious) FOIA requests, a lot of that was daylighted, though not necessarily used...and mere pittances were involved, to my knowledge harming no one.

There are no similar mechanisms to daylight the doings of these private families and corporations as they gamble with millions of lives for profit, and mass death is considered an acceptable cost of doing business.
