I very much doubt whether that is the case. As far as I know, most Chinese people are distinguished by their intelligence, thoroughness and diligence. What do the thousands of people employed by China’s foreign ministry and its intelligence services do all day, if they are unaware of such important facts?

a basic understanding of economic history and development economics...would help you avoid making the kind of embarrassing, elementary errors you make in this comment....There is simply nothing whatsoever that is unusual or mysterious about this. 40 years ago, China was a largely (80% of the population) rural, agricultural economy, far behind the global technological frontier...This is what has happened in every single country that has undergone the industrial revolution.

During the three decades to 2010, China achieved perhaps the most rapid sustained rate of economic development in the history of the human species, with its real economy growing almost 40-fold between 1978 and 2010. In 1978, America’s economy was 15 times larger, but according to most international estimates, China is now set to surpass America’s total economic output within just another few years.

Furthermore, the vast majority of China’s newly created economic wealth has flowed to ordinary Chinese workers, who have moved from oxen and bicycles to the verge of automobiles in just a single generation. While median American incomes have been stagnant for almost forty years, those in China have nearly doubled every decade, with the real wages of workers outside the farm-sector rising about 150 percent over the last ten years alone. The Chinese of 1980 were desperately poor compared to Pakistanis, Nigerians, or Kenyans; but today, they are several times wealthier, representing more than a tenfold shift in relative income.

A World Bank report recently highlighted the huge drop in global poverty rates from 1980 to 2008, but critics noted that over 100 percent of that decline came from China alone: the number of Chinese living in dire poverty fell by a remarkable 662 million, while the impoverished population in the rest of the world actually rose by 13 million. And although India is often paired with China in the Western media, a large fraction of Indians have actually grown poorer over time. The bottom half of India’s still rapidly growing population has seen its daily caloric intake steadily decline for the last 30 years, with half of all children under five now being malnourished.

China’s economic progress is especially impressive when matched against historical parallels. Between 1870 and 1900, America enjoyed unprecedented industrial expansion, such that even Karl Marx and his followers began to doubt that a Communist revolution would be necessary or even possible in a country whose people were achieving such widely shared prosperity through capitalistic expansion. During those 30 years America’s real per capita income grew by 100 percent. But over the last 30 years, real per capita income in China has grown by more than 1,300 percent.

Over the last decade alone, China quadrupled its industrial output, which is now comparable to that of the U.S. In the crucial sector of automobiles, China raised its production ninefold, from 2 million cars in 2000 to 18 million in 2010, a figure now greater than the combined totals for America and Japan. China accounted for fully 85 percent of the total world increase in auto manufacturing during that decade.

What support do these 'super high IQ financial data' firms that you rely on provide for this belief in an acceleration into 'hyperdrive' for oil prices? It's hard to see if the economy goes into a recession? Buffet was only speaking about one company, not giving a bullish assessment of the whole industry.

Nonsense. The point Cavilli-Sforza makes is broad/continental population divisions ("races") are too heterogeneous to have any utility in genetics. And he's right, for example if looking at medicine:

Don't forget that open borders are only advocated for white countries by mostly whites and some of their coloured poodles. They pretend that it's a "universal" right but I haven't seen hordes of these white liberals storming borders of non-European countries demanding the right to settle there with no documents or paperwork. The chinese do build these personal networks of family and associates. They called Guanxi. These Guanxi give Chinese in southeast Asia a huge advantage over the locals and allow them to build and maintain market dominance.

From my decade experience in China, civilised Chinese cities and populations are the former concession cities and the former European and Japanese colonies. The rest of China is filthy and germ infested. How many children defecate in the street and in public facilities including international airports is a good litmus test.

I've always wondered if the temples that the Red Guards vandalized were really that interesting or not - though I am sure they did a lot of damage in other fields. And, of course, it is still lamentable to lose anything of history or tradition.

The ones I've seen don't seem to have any real architectural merit, on average. Maybe, it had something to do with general poverty, rather than lack of ability. Or maybe there was something particular about building castles in Europe that led to more inspired masonry in other buildings, like churches.

But was there anything like the dynamiting of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior?

There is another name for smarmy bureaucratic microbes who are nearly everywhere: humans. Frail, flawed humans. Greedy selfish humans who are more concerned with saving their own asses than with matters of principle. Cowardly humans who know that if they resist the Selams of the world, they will put themselves in the crosshairs as well. WHY are you defending the wrecker Stallman so vigorously? Perhaps there is something in your own background that we should look into as well?

There is also another kind of human - the brave heroic individual who is willing to risk it all. The man who will stand in front of the tanks and miraculously the tank column will stop and not just roll over him. But such individuals are one in a million.

Look at the Cultural Revolution (not our current one but the one in China in the '60s - the one that set them back decades and from which, in some respects they may never recover, just as Europe has never really recovered from WWI). The Red Guards did not act alone - they were given impetus and endorsement by Mao. The bureaucrats who threw their subordinates overboard could have (hypothetically) said no and tried to protect their colleagues but they were cowards and thought that any effort to defend them (as Stallman tried to defend his dead friend Minsky) would have only gotten themselves purged too, or at least they thought so and weren't going to test this. Now if EVERYONE had been brave and presented a united front, perhaps the Red Guards could have been resisted (Zhou Enlai prevented the Red Guards from destroying the priceless treasures of the Forbidden City). But the tactic of the Revolution is divide and conquer. As Alinsky said, "Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it."

So we know that Selam is just a mindless Red Guard, waving her Little Red Book. Her Little Red Book contains hair care tips and is even more idiotic than the original - proving Marx's maxim that history repeats itself, first as tragedy, then as farce. And we know that Stallman is just a victim who (with luck) will someday be posthumously rehabilitated. And we know that the smarmy bureaucratic microbes of MIT and the Free Software Foundation are the same cowards that populate the bureaucracies of the world everywhere and in all eras. But who is our Mao, who is sending children like Selam off on this crusade?
