“I very much doubt that they are fully aware of this enormous, untapped source of political leverage”.

I very much doubt whether that is the case. As far as I know, most Chinese people are distinguished by their intelligence, thoroughness and diligence. What do the thousands of people employed by China’s foreign ministry and its intelligence services do all day, if they are unaware of such important facts?

Well, that's not an unreasonable criticism. But I really wonder...

The moment I read about Meng's arrest, the obvious Iran/Israel connection was the first thing I noticed. After all, it's even on the arrest warrant. And I'd also been very much aware of Adelson's huge Macau casino vulnerability for many, many years. But it was only late yesterday afternoon that I suddenly put 2+2 together.

I'd think that the vast majority of the regular readers of this website are certainly aware that America has long suffered under the control of a pro-Israel puppet government, with Adelson being one of the top string-pullers. Yet glancing over the comments on this thread, it sounds like almost no one else had previously considered my proposal.

So if neither I nor almost anyone else where had gotten the very obvious idea over the last few days, why can we be so sure that the China would have done so? After all, don't we probably have a better understanding of the complex internal dynamics of American politics than the Chinese do?

As an interesting aside, just an hour ago, Jim Chanos, a leading Wall Street investor, announced on CNBC that he was shorting Adelson's stock because of the sudden risks to the Macau casino holdings due to the current conflict with China. I wonder whether he or one of his associates might have read my article...

a basic understanding of economic history and development economics...would help you avoid making the kind of embarrassing, elementary errors you make in this comment....There is simply nothing whatsoever that is unusual or mysterious about this. 40 years ago, China was a largely (80% of the population) rural, agricultural economy, far behind the global technological frontier...This is what has happened in every single country that has undergone the industrial revolution.

No, I believe you're mistaken. I'd already linked my 2012 print cover-story on China/America upthread but here are a few highly relevant paragraphs:

    https://www.unz.com/runz/chinas-rise-americas-fall/

Adjusted for purchasing power, most Chinese in 1980 had an income 60–70 percent below that of the citizens in other major Third World countries such as Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Kenya, none of which were considered great economic success stories. In those days, even Haitians were far wealthier than Chinese.

    * * *

During the three decades to 2010, China achieved perhaps the most rapid sustained rate of economic development in the history of the human species, with its real economy growing almost 40-fold between 1978 and 2010. In 1978, America’s economy was 15 times larger, but according to most international estimates, China is now set to surpass America’s total economic output within just another few years.

Furthermore, the vast majority of China’s newly created economic wealth has flowed to ordinary Chinese workers, who have moved from oxen and bicycles to the verge of automobiles in just a single generation. While median American incomes have been stagnant for almost forty years, those in China have nearly doubled every decade, with the real wages of workers outside the farm-sector rising about 150 percent over the last ten years alone. The Chinese of 1980 were desperately poor compared to Pakistanis, Nigerians, or Kenyans; but today, they are several times wealthier, representing more than a tenfold shift in relative income.

A World Bank report recently highlighted the huge drop in global poverty rates from 1980 to 2008, but critics noted that over 100 percent of that decline came from China alone: the number of Chinese living in dire poverty fell by a remarkable 662 million, while the impoverished population in the rest of the world actually rose by 13 million. And although India is often paired with China in the Western media, a large fraction of Indians have actually grown poorer over time. The bottom half of India’s still rapidly growing population has seen its daily caloric intake steadily decline for the last 30 years, with half of all children under five now being malnourished.

China’s economic progress is especially impressive when matched against historical parallels. Between 1870 and 1900, America enjoyed unprecedented industrial expansion, such that even Karl Marx and his followers began to doubt that a Communist revolution would be necessary or even possible in a country whose people were achieving such widely shared prosperity through capitalistic expansion. During those 30 years America’s real per capita income grew by 100 percent. But over the last 30 years, real per capita income in China has grown by more than 1,300 percent.

Over the last decade alone, China quadrupled its industrial output, which is now comparable to that of the U.S. In the crucial sector of automobiles, China raised its production ninefold, from 2 million cars in 2000 to 18 million in 2010, a figure now greater than the combined totals for America and Japan. China accounted for fully 85 percent of the total world increase in auto manufacturing during that decade.

China has a massive housing bubble

They can move hundreds of millions into the cities. I don't see it as a housing bubble. They will need to build lots of cities, houses and apartments for that huge rural population as the country urbanises further. That process (massive city building) will take at least two more decades.

Total debt to GDP is at 300%

Isn't that debt they owe to themselves? Pretty sure some of that cancels out.

There is no doubt about their debt problem, on the other hand their population does have a large savings rate (unlike the US population), and they do have large FX reserves.

Moreover, there is OBOR, something Japan did not had. Its purpose is to tie the world to China. This will provide growth benefits too.

Then China offers massive economy of scale and the benefits of it compared to Japan.

So i certainly do not see China right now as another Japan.

Nonsense. The point Cavilli-Sforza makes is broad/continental population divisions ("races") are too heterogeneous to have any utility in genetics. And he's right, for example if looking at medicine:

"These big groups that we characterize as races are too heterogeneous to lump together in a scientific way. If you're doing a DNA study to look for markers for a particular disease, you can't use 'Caucasians' as a group. They're too diverse." - Kurgen K. Naggert, a geneticist at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine

Even "European" as a category is useless in medical genetics because its too broad.

What is though useful is small groups like Amish hence the Amish Study of Major Affective Disorders:

    https://www.coriell.org/0/Sections/Collections/NIGMS/AmishIntro.aspx?PgId=601

why not just redefine race to be groups of people that can be lumped together in a scientific way, so instead of Caucasian race, we can have Amish race, jewish race, ect.

    • Replies: @Anonymous
    @neir

Because that was already tried (unsuccessfully) decades back and it runs into a semantics dispute. As an example the US alone counts 567 federally recognised indigenous tribes. No one considers these today to be "races".

    To quote one anthropologist:

"[If] race is equated with local (or breeding) population, which according to most if not all scientists is a biologically sound concept, the whole issue reduces to one of semantics." (Strkalj, 2009)

To quote another source that highlights problems with the semantics:

"Amish in America (Appiah 1996, 73) or to [Northern] Irish Protestants (Zack 2002, 69), but they clearly cannot refer to those groupings of people presently subsumed under American racial census categories. Because the concept “race” can only apply to groups not typically deemed races (Amish, [Northern] Irish Protestants), and because this concept cannot apply to groups typically deemed races (African Americans, Whites, Asians, Native Americans), a mismatch occurs between the concept and its typical referent. Thus, the concept of race must be eliminated due to its logical incoherence (Mallon 2006, 526, 533)."

    @neir

"why not just redefine race to be groups of people that can be lumped together in a scientific way, so instead of Caucasian race, we can have Amish race, jewish race, ect."

This was refuted by Hardimon in Rethinking Race: The Case for Deflationary Realism (my emphasis):

"To count as racial, a visible physical characteristic must be real (as opposed to imaginary). One might mistakenly regard G1 and G2 as different races based on merely imagined differences. But unless G1 actually exhibits a pattern of visible physical features distinguishing it from some other group, G2, G2 is not a race. If (as seems to be the case) there are no visible patterns in differences in visible physical features that distinguish the Amish from other Caucasians, the Amish are not a distinct minimalist race." (Note that Hardimon cites Appiah's Race, Culture, Identity (pg 71) in his 25th footnote; pg 186.)

And writes on pg 170 about the Irish (my emphasis):

"In characterizing minimalist race as the "biological correlate of socialrace," I mean that minimalist race supplies the visible physical features that are the biological correlate of socialrace. I do not mean to suggest that for every socialrace there is a corresponding minimalist race. The Irish once represented a socialrace that may have lacked a biological correlate. It is unlikely that they are a minimalist race."

I vaguely remember a few things that the expeditionary forces did, during the Boxer Rebellion, but i never saw any pictures except of the Summer Palace, which, at least in outline, I believe, was designed by foreigners. And rebuilt.

I wonder if the Red Guards destroyed any impressive buildings.

The author of this article is just jealous.

The Chinese gave the world the gunpowder (so you can kill each other) and the compass (so you can sail the oceans and rob other people of their lands). They also invent other things ... like the printing press (Gutenburg was much later) and paper money (so you can fool all the people all the time) ... and maybe last but not least ... noodles (also known as spaghetti :))

BTW, the world is witnessing the decline and slow death of western civilization and a new benevolent ascendancy is emerging.

  • There is a popular genre of commentary which wishes to show that bright people make as many errors as less bright people, perhaps as a consequence of divine retribution. “Einstein made an error in maths which was spotted by a bus conductor” lifts the hearts of some readers. Of course, bright people make errors. Do...

Educated, high IQ people seem far more likely to support mass immigration and left wing views generally than the less educated, lower IQ working classes do.

What is the basis of your claim of Educated, high IQ people...? Because someone is a college graduate does not mean they are educated...or high IQ. Their course of study is important in determining that.

  • As I mentioned earlier, Richard Stallman is an extreme example of the computer nerd personality type, and also a heroic architect of the not-for-profit software movement. Now Stallman has been MeTooed, but not for anything he did, but for defending another genius, Marvin Minsky. The cadre who went after Stallman is Selam Gano. From Inside...
  • Stallman would have supported #metoo like most democrats, so why should anyone feel sympathy for him?

Justice is justice. When people we don't like get screwed over it's still wrong.

That said, I'm not sure Stallman is actually getting screwed over here, because I'm not sure what exactly MIT was getting out of him in the first place other than star power, and, frankly, I don't see what of any real importance he is actually losing.

If Stallman was not redpilled before last week, he is now.

Someday there will be a saying: "Never redpill a genius".

There is another name for smarmy bureaucratic microbes who are nearly everywhere: humans. Frail, flawed humans. Greedy selfish humans who are more concerned with saving their own asses than with matters of principle. Cowardly humans who know that if they resist the Selams of the world, they will put themselves in the crosshairs as well. WHY are you defending the wrecker Stallman so vigorously? Perhaps there is something in your own background that we should look into as well?

There is also another kind of human - the brave heroic individual who is willing to risk it all. The man who will stand in front of the tanks and miraculously the tank column will stop and not just roll over him. But such individuals are one in a million.

Look at the Cultural Revolution (not our current one but the one in China in the '60s - the one that set them back decades and from which, in some respects they may never recover, just as Europe has never really recovered from WWI). The Red Guards did not act alone - they were given impetus and endorsement by Mao. The bureaucrats who threw their subordinates overboard could have (hypothetically) said no and tried to protect their colleagues but they were cowards and thought that any effort to defend them (as Stallman tried to defend his dead friend Minsky) would have only gotten themselves purged too, or at least they thought so and weren't going to test this. Now if EVERYONE had been brave and presented a united front, perhaps the Red Guards could have been resisted (Zhou Enlai prevented the Red Guards from destroying the priceless treasures of the Forbidden City). But the tactic of the Revolution is divide and conquer. As Alinsky said, "Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it."

So we know that Selam is just a mindless Red Guard, waving her Little Red Book. Her Little Red Book contains hair care tips and is even more idiotic than the original - proving Marx's maxim that history repeats itself, first as tragedy, then as farce. And we know that Stallman is just a victim who (with luck) will someday be posthumously rehabilitated. And we know that the smarmy bureaucratic microbes of MIT and the Free Software Foundation are the same cowards that populate the bureaucracies of the world everywhere and in all eras. But who is our Mao, who is sending children like Selam off on this crusade?
