I agree. We are very close to a family from Mexico that has sacrificed dearly to become Americans. Once, out of frustration, the father declared they were going back to Mexico. Their son, after six years in American schools and enrolled in a series of Advanced Placement courses in high school, declared he was NOT going. He's American, he said, and America is his home.

The son now has a degree in Architecture from a prestigious American university. He's married to a wonderful gabacha. And he has already exceeded anything he could have aspired to had the family stayed in Mexico.

The entire family has prospects for a bright future as Americans ... who truly want to be American. No pretense here.

Arthur Sackler is in the Medical Advertising Hall of Fame for having developed enough ways to get Valium into US households that it was the first pharmaceutical to rack up $100 million in revenue. Later $1 billion.

They were and their families remain part of an international elite of philanthropists and art collectors.

Many in their circles were also heavily invested in their enterprises and also led other powerful organizations. Example: Guido Goldman, who founded the German Marshall Fund and headed up the First Spring Corporation (a private investment firm in NYC). He is also known for having created the ikat-as-art industry.

The swath of devastation that their drugs have cut through American society is one of the vast untold stories of the 20th century. If ever there was a family whose wealth should be seized under RICO, this is it. They connived to quash reports of death and harm caused by their products. They reveled triumphally in numbing the American masses and their own rise as "culture leaders."

She is a big Bernie supporter. She founded the BM's "feminist art" program and established Judy Chicago's fame. She runs the family foundation (Arthur M. Sackler Foundation).

Arthur's granddaughter Denise Marica is in charge of the big-gift program for SF MOMA. Which means a rich person using her contact list to get major donations.

My point with these two examples being that these drug-pushing billions not only destroyed so many working class lives. They also saturate all manner of "high culture" institutions on both coasts, like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Smithsonian, as well as Harvard, Princeton, NYU, Oxford, Cambridge and more. These are the families that define and determine access to these institutions.

This clan's fingerprints are all over the phenomenon you describe. The damage done to Americans' minds and health is unknown but the Sacklers sit atop their pile of billions and tell the rest of us what to think, how to vote, and how much better they are. Their solidarity is with each other, not with America. Genocide indeed.

I almost can't blame the powers that be for keeping such secrets. Knowledge is Power, and secrets have a secret power, something mystical in man's nature that wants to keep them. Why did they paint that animal art twenty-five thousand years ago in the labyrinth recess of caves? My strong suspicion, which others have probably stated, they thought a bounty of food and good season would be summoned by consecrating a secret.

No I don't much think we owe the hoi polloi truth. But I know that might just be because I enjoy reading The New York Times with the text-pecking eye of a hierophant. When you stumble onto secrets being esoterically communicated you delight in knowing what others don't. That prominent obit they gave him, that was them telling Ron, you're right.

And it's thrilling when one esoteric secret leads to another so that you track down a truth somehow now possessed of a power more sacred than simple fact. My problem is that I'm not good at keeping these secrets, and since a job well done deserves a reward, I'll point toward a secret I've recently enjoyed uncovering that others might enjoy it too.

American wages have been stagnant or declining since the early 1970s. Global growth pretty much ceased to exist after 2008; since then, we've been bouncing along the flat-line. On any given day there is something like $10 trillion of sovereign debt trading at negative interest rates. Future unfunded liabilities for Social Security and private pensions is mindbogglingly large, perhaps north of $200 trillion.

Everything, everywhere is insolvent. In order to afford our current lifestyle we have already borrowed and spent every red cent from the foreseeable future and then some. And the generations that will be working and paying taxes in that future are smaller than the generations of old folks they will have to support.

There are massive, unliquidated asset bubbles in stocks, bonds, and real estate. Stock indices continue to rise while P/E ratios erode year after year. The lethal policies of QE, NIRP, and other central bank shenanigans are meant to hide the insolvency of sovereign debt while allowing the well-connected to benefit from the market distortions. The resulting inflation in housing, medical costs, education, and the increasing tax burden combined with the inability to save, is squeezing the middle class out of existence.

Massive population declines are not unprecedented. At the height of the Roman Empire the lands of Europe, North Africa and Asia Minor supported over 100 million people. By the 6th century that number had declined to about 20 million. Civilization on a large scale did not reappear there for quite some time. One thousand years later, Miguel de Cervantes' Madrid was the most populous city in Europe with 60,000 souls---the capacity of a modern sports stadium.

Anybody with a sense of history and an eye for the signs of the times can see that we are now at a civilizational apex and that the declining limb is already in view. Demographics and economics tell the story.
