Not entirely the case. A second-hand anecdote relayed by a classical musician who had a (((friend))) who was part of an orchestra that toured Europe behind the legendary Hermann Baumann (note that the classical, solo horn repertoire is mostly German -- Mozart, Strauss, et al.):

He said that as the concert venues approached Germany, Baumann's playing increasingly took on a distinctly "German" charicter that disturbed him. This reached a peak in a concert in Baumann's home town in (as I recall) Bavaria. Although playing the same notes in the same sequence in the same music, the identifiably home-rooted, Germanic self-confidence it communicated terrified him. And this many years ago, when "anti-semitism" in this country was mostly the paranoia of a few overheated imaginations seeking to exploit it -- not an idea that would come to mind in a context like classical music.

Athens lost the Peloponnesian war and lost about half the men in Athens fighting that war. After the Syracuse debacle, Athens made any slave who would volunteer to be an oarsman on a trireme an a Athenian citizen as well. After the peace, Athens had a class of formerly slave rowers that were not Athenian by birth and rearing, had no chance in the commercial society of Athens, and who lived on their summer's fee for rowing the Athenian fleet. Athenian foreign policy devolved to finding excuses for fleet deployment by meddling in the affairs of other cities, contributing to the political turmoil that ended the Golden Age of the Greeks.

You can see the analogy to the US at present, right down to the "military/industrial complex" and the "meddling".

This state of affair, "meddling" and rower welfare, was ended by the Diadochi, successors of Alexander the Great. They assembled a fleet so numerous, and staffed by the Alexandrian army had just conquered the known world, that the result was overwhelming the Athenian Navy surrendered (for the first time in its history). The Diadochi destroyed the Athenian shipyards & logistic support, deported the descendants of the slaves to the back of beyond. The Protestants who dominated the US during the Gilded Age are now considered monsters whose industrialization threatens to destroy the Earth. The immigrant laborers, not Protestant, formed what turned out to be the dominant faction of the New Deal, and have been running the US to benefit themselves. Granted that the Jewish Coalition won the dogfight for dominance that followed WW II, and that the other New Deal ethnic factions were run out of the urban areas as the Jewish coalition tried to import what it thought were intrinsically dependent immigrants to US and European cities, the fact remains that the Protestants never regained power after LBJ's ukase that churches which endorsed candidates would be taxed and the subsequent conversion of all Christian churches (rare exceptions) into "shut up and sit down" [1] lectures.

So, under the above analogy, this current stretchy of history is when the US, robbed blind, gets stomped. But possibly loses the people who robbed it. A rough stretch of history is in front of us.
