I’m spent, how about you?
The Friday night vote on Boehner 3.0 or whatever iteration it is now will take place at approximately 6:15pm Eastern tonight.
C-SPAN has it live here.
Latest versions of the House GOP and Senate Reid Illusory Cuts bills are here.
Fiscal conservatives fought the good fight.
But after all is said and done, we are getting another debt ceiling increase with the bare minimum of spending controls and another bogus commission with a balanced budget amendment bone thrown to the base.
Boehner is now on the floor invoking the “This bill isn’t perfect” line and the “We’ve now sent TWO bills to the Dems” line.
I tweeted this American Thinker piece by Joseph Ashby this morning. If you haven’t read it yet, click now.
For some comic relief, check out Caleb Howe’s Hobbit photoshop contest at RedState.
Back to the floor, Boehner says: “I stuck my neck out a mile” to deal with Obama. Dems booing on the floor.
Boehner shouting: “Put something on the table! Tell us where you are!”
Procedural votes are wrapping up. I’ll update with the final vote. On the Senate side, they’ve just extended the time for morning business until 6:45pm as they await the House final vote.
But you already know the spoiler alert:
Fast-forward past the sound and fury…The debt ceiling is going up. Government is getting bigger. Real spending cuts are getting kicked down the can. Entitlement reform is going nowhere. Reid and McConnell will dilute Boehner’s already diluted plan behind closed doors. And everyone in Washington will rush to take credit for nothing much.
Update 6:23pm Eastern…The bill just passed the 216 threshhold…No, Boehner doesn’t “win.” Big government stasis wins, alas.
Final tally 218-210 with a handful of NVs (non-voting). Will update with roll call vote when it’s ready.
8:25pm update: Senate tables Boehner bill 59-41. Reid filed cloture on his own bill. Cue Dem demagoguery about GOP obstructionism in 3, 2, 1…
Surreal. Reid calls press conference to whine about GOP “filibuster.” Refuses to schedule vote tonight even though Repubs agreed to vote on simple majority basis.
Reid earlier today: “Time is short, and too much is at stake to waste even one more minute.”
Now he’s willing to waste two days.
In short: He’s filibustering *himself* because he doesn’t have enough votes.
Next stop: Cloture vote in Senate early Sunday morning.
Question: What bribes will Dirty Harry hand out this time to drag his bill over the line?
It’s Christmas in July!
