I know many of you have been following every twist, turn, and awful pun related to Democrat Rep. Anthony Weiner’s Twitter-gate fiasco. I’m still catching up after being offline with family over the holiday weekend, but I do know this:

Weiner’s certainly not doing himself any favors with his Talk-y McTalkingpoints deflection of the brouhaha. Even the Beltway press is not buying it.

Lefty blogs are not doing themselves any favors with wild and desperate conspiracies about this being a right-wing hit job.

And MSM types who are dismissing the story are not doing themselves any favors with their selective moral policing of Dem vs. GOP politicians.

So many other conservative blogs have done yeomen’s work digging into Weiner-gate. Memeorandum has links galore on all the forensic work.

(Note to Ace of Spades: There’s no “embargo” among the “conservative media establishment.” Don’t throw in the towel. You should be taking a victory lap. Fit is hitting the shan. Petards are being hoisted. And it wasn’t necessary to have every conservative site featuring the story in Armaggedon-size font. That is a good thing.)

My best guess about what really happened:

As a dedicated Twitter user myself, the most likely scenario is that Weiner himself mistakenly DM’ed (direct-messaged) the “prank” photo to the young woman in Seattle and intended it to be private. It takes just one wrong keystroke for a private DM to appear in one’s public timeline. (Allah wonders if Weiner would be so stupid as to post the photo through publicly-viewed Yfrog, but as we’ve seen from the recent bipartisan parade of — pardon my language — political wankers from Ensign and Edwards to Schwarzenegger and Sanford, etc, etc, etc — politicians do supremely stupid things when they think with the wrong organ.)

A second, but less likely, scenario is that someone with permission to post on Weiner’s account (most politicians have staffers who know the password to their bosses’ official Twitter accounts) tweeted the photo.

The “hacking” scenario strikes me as the most complicated, convoluted and least plausible of all the possibilities — and the lack of urgency and outrage on Weiner’s part deepens suspicions about his claim.

What should the consequences be if in fact he tweeted his package? It’s not a crime to send creepy photos to another adult on Twitter. But it is abjectly embarrassing for Democrats to be caught with their double-standards pants down. And as always, it’s the cover-up that’s worse than the original transgression.

Imagine if it were Weiner’s congressional nemesis, Michele Bachmann (whom he refers to as “Crazy”), in the middle of this scandal.

He’d be the first to take to Twitter to mercilessly harangue anyone who played the “move on, this is a distraction” card.

He’d be the first to take to MSNBC to bray about “GOP family values.”

He’d be the first to come up with some snarky partisan #hashtag and indulge in unfettered schadenfreude.

Perhaps pity is the best response.
