Ron Unz is America’s most accomplished figure in alternative journalism. If you doubt that, read his American Pravda series, look at his webzine, and let me know if you find anything comparable. Ron’s latest American Pravda entry, “Remembering the Liberty,” admirably summarizes the best available information on Israel’s June 8, 1967 attack on the unarmed spy ship USS Liberty. Ron apparently agrees with me that the single most important book on the incident is Peter Hounam’s Operation Cyanide, which offers strong evidence that then-US-president Lyndon Johnson conspired with Israeli leaders to stage a false flag attack on the Liberty, blamed on Egypt, aimed at triggering a US nuclear attack on Russian military installations in Cairo. According to witnesses cited by Hounam, American bombers loaded with nuclear weapons were less than ten minutes from hitting their targets when they were recalled. The miraculous survival of the USS Liberty, in the face of an all-out Israeli onslaught tasked with massacring the entire crew and sinking the ship, may have prevented World War III. The Liberty crew’s incredible, successful efforts to save their ship (and, it turned out, the world) may represent the greatest heroic military episode in all of American history. So why isn’t this a leading topic in our history textbooks? Why aren’t the Liberty crew national heroes? Why hasn’t Hollywood churned out dozens of blockbusters? Why is the media still lying and obfuscating? Warning: If you explore those questions, people may call you names!

In 1950 a man named Reuven Shiloah, the founder of Israel’s first intelligence organization, came to Washington. He visited the CIA and he came away very impressed with how it was organized. He went back to Israel and, in April 1951, he created out of a very fractious collection of security forces what was known as the Institute for Intelligence and Special Tasks—inevitably known as Mossad, Hebrew for “institute.”

In 1951 Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion came to the United States and brought Shiloah with him. Ben-Gurion met privately with President Truman, and Angleton arranged for Ben-Gurion to also have lunch with his friend Allen Dulles, who would shortly become the director of the CIA. The purpose of this meeting, ………Efrain Halevy, a retired director of the Mossad and a longtime friend of Angleton’s,…… told me in an interview in Tel Aviv—the purpose was, in Halevy’s words, to clarify in no uncertain terms that, notwithstanding what had happened between Israel and United States in 1948, and notwithstanding that Russia had been a key factor in Israel’s survival, Israel considered itself part of the Western world and would maintain the relationship with the United States in this spirit.

Angleton’s formative and sometimes decisive influence on U.S. policy toward Israel can be seen in many areas—from the impotence of U.S. nuclear non-proliferation policy in the region, to Israel’s triumph in the 1967 Six-Day War, to the feeble U.S. response to the attack on the Liberty, to the intelligence failure represented by the Yom Kippur War of 1973. I tell a lot of the story in The Ghost, but the story of Angleton in Israel is really so large and so profound that it probably deserves its own book. I could certainly not do justice to it in the 18 minutes that I have, so I’m going to confine myself to one narrow question about the tradeoffs that became implicit in this arrangement between the CIA and the Mossad, and its implications for us.

With the fissile material diverted from NUMEC, Israel was able to construct its first nuclear weapon by 1967 and become a full-blown nuclear power by 1970—the first, and still the only, nuclear power in the Middle East. Angleton, it is fair to say, thought collaboration with Israel was more important than U.S. non-proliferation policy.

The simplest answer is usually the correct answer, to misquote Geoffrey of Ockham, while retaining the truth of his opinion.

A people arrogant, corrupt and immoral enough to murder prisoners of war after they had surrendered, (as had happened to the German Wehrmacht after their surrender to Eisenhower), as the Israelis did to Egyptian prisoners, in contravention to all the rules of war, will not hesitate to even murder the armed forces of their greatest friend, that had done the same as they had.

The US murdered 2,000,000 German soldiers by starvation, in open prison camps and had participated in murder by fire bombing of 10,000,000 German women, children and pensioner refugees in cities across Germany in late 1944 and 1945, and had assisted the Russian genocide of 15,000,000 Prussian civilians. Israel saw themselves in the US, and as there is no honour amongst thieves, liars and murderers attacked the one intelligence unit that could have revealed their contravention of international law.

One rabid dog attacked another rabid dog and some members of the latter rabid dog wants to teach their nation’s children their version of that lie.

Shame on you Ron Unz. You are better than that. You point out the mot in the Israeli’s eye without seeing the plank in your own. First teach your children what total criminals you US ancestors were.

Just a guess, but information delayed might be part of the reason.

I’ve had reason to mention this elsewhere: I started my four-year hitch in the US Navy one year plus one month after the Liberty incident. During this four-year stretch, and having known more CYNs than is typical, I heard zero about the incident beyond what appeared in LIFE Magazine and a few other periodicals. This was before I went in. The old National Review even brought it up, to no effect. The people who knew the extent of it were utterly silent.

In this case I think both Israel and the American wing of the 5 Eyes information people showed their superiority in matters of keeping secrets going beyond anything usual in human communications. No ordinary nation would stay stone silent about an attack that killed their own men in such a wanton manner, to the point of a US president and at least one admiral leading the code of silence.

Most of us accepted it as a “friendly fire” incident, regrettable but these things happen, and were blissfully ignorant till Ennis’ book Assault on the Liberty came out years later.

Seriously: Justice delayed really is denied. Even the justice of knowing and sharing the truth. Same applies to 911… and much else. Delaying is a strategy with an ancient pedigree.

Ever since the aerial destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, there has been the popular assumption that a nuclear attack is always dooms day. There has always been scientific and eye witness denial those cities were obliterated by two nuclear bombs. Some say nuclear bombs are a hoax. I wouldn’t go that far but they obliterate their targeted locality by radiation not by fires. I passed through Hiroshima and there seemed no sign of the old city which was unlike everywhere else I saw in Japan. That seems conventional aerial warfare. As Ron in the interview pointed out, the U S attack may have been aimed not directly at Cairo but at a Soviet base west of the city. That would have destroyed the Soviet military presence in Egypt and led to the U S seizure of Egypt and so the Suez canal and domination of Middle Eastern oil countries. Johnson was an Israeli asset. But the U S generals who connived in this U S invasion of Egypt were I assume U S military patriots. Not unlike the British military seizure of Egypt and the Suez canal in the 18800s during anti European riots. That does make military sense and I can assume the U S military were not run by a bunch of Doctor Strange Loves. Kevin in the interview does quote Doctor Strange Love about killing twenty to thirty million people. But that was after all popular satire.

  7. JWalters says:

Thanks for the info on the planned nuclear attack. Whodunnit? Johnson didn’t have total control over America’s mainstream media. Neither did Israel. But the war profiteering, messianic bankers behind Israel (and Wall Street) did. And quite obviously still do. JP Morgan started acquiring that control for them in the early 1900’s.

¿Qué? What happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki had nothing to do with religion, but was nothing more nor less than outright, cold-blooded mass-murder of essentially innocent civilians:

The United States detonated two nuclear weapons over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 and 9 August 1945, respectively. The two bombings killed between 129,000 and 226,000 people, most of whom were civilians, …

Want more? You can read the reputedly compromised wiki, but three cities, far in Japan’s south [even with a quite specialised version of US bombers, those cities were ‘only marginally’ within range], were ‘reserved’ from “a conventional and firebombing campaign that devastated 67 Japanese cities.”

Me: IMHO, the over-ruling argument for those vile mass-murders was to acquire ‘real-life’ data on the destructiveness of the atomic bombs: “Fat Man”, a plutonium implosion-type nuclear weapon; and “Little Boy”, an enriched uranium gun-type fission weapon. [The war was already long-lost by Japan; the US had to delay until the bombs were ready, also in a race against the Russians, who really ‘were coming’]. Of course, there may well have been both Jews and Christians in the ‘nuke supply chain,’ but it was definitively murder, sheer bloody mass-murder. I’d say it’s a valid [if early] glimpse of the ZUSA rogue-regime, as we observe it today. rgds

Meh — you definitely exaggerate. At the time of the bombing, Hiroshima at least had a population that was about twenty percent military personnel; the Japanese had been evacuating civilians from major urban centers, and Hiroshima was the primary port for traffic to and from China.

In fact, if Japan was going to keep fighting, she’d have wanted to bring back some of her soldiers from mainland Asia — and it would be easiest if they came through Hiroshima.

It wasn’t exactly a great moment in the history of chivalry, but the bombing of Hiroshima is relatively defensible. It was a military target.

No, you are wrong in your supposition. The US was established and based upon the extermination of (inferior) races from the outset, in a very Jewish way of doing violence.

First by eradicating the native indigenous population of the US and then by oppressing, exploiting and putting in to slavery the whole world.

The US is still doing this with its 1100 bases in foreign countries world wide such as in Syria with illegal bases at Al Tanif, and several more in the north east that train terrorists, loot resources, burn crops, assassinate local leaders, launder money.

Their is no ‘getting in the spirit’ unless you are a liberal stooge or Democrat shill. You can’t ‘get in the spirit’ by warping reality to suit your lie.

Until you face the truth you are living the same lie as your Establishment lie, where ever you live, whatever you think you are. A lie is a lie, and a liar is a liar. QED…as the Romans used to put it.

    BorisMay —

You are confusing the empire, which I hate, with ordinary humans of all sorts who have to be on good terms with each other to change anything. I have to cooperate with people who screwed my ancestors. They have to cooperate with me. Citizenship means accepting duty and stowing emotions. I accept the principle that honest people the world over make a sort of temporary World Citizenship when they involve crossing borders, such as rendering aid in a disaster.

One of the things we are cooperating and getting together on is dumping the empire all of us have inherited. Lots of veterans hate it as much as I do. Hating each other would not make us stronger.

Admitting it was evil and working to end the imperium is enough, professing guilt is counterproductive. It took the Catholic Church 2000 years to figure out that forcing their peasants to wallow in guilt is useless. The peasants just ended up hating the Vatican.

  18. Franz says:

Agree. It’s like the Pentagon Papers ending the Vietnam War. The time between don’t matter.

The truth about the Liberty would put American support of Israel in jeopardy. Might even end it.

This means the assault on our ship hot news — because most Americans are unaware of it. The news about the Liberty, Lyndon and the whole of modern Israel’s history could be a game changer less because it was a crime than because it was and is actively buried.

  20. @Kevin Barrett

It seems clear that the attack by Israel was “deliberate” but the motives and causal sequence remain unclear. As far as I can see there is only one set of alleged facts which could excuse Israrl’s attack as innocent.

It has been said that the Israelis inquired about the presence of any US ships not in international waters and the message back from the 6th Fleet was that there were no such ships. Against that someone pointed out that the 6th Fleet commander would have known where USS Liberty was so that erroneous information could not have been given.

Yet when one gets down to the nitty gritty, what does the relevant radio officer (or Petty Officer) reply? The 6th Fleet may well have been aware of the order the NSA was intending, but failing, to get through to the Liberty which was to withdraw 100 miles into international waters. That being so, how might the reply to the Israelis be couched? Maybe something like “As from 1000 hours ther will be no US Navy vessel within 100 miles of Israel territory”. Possible? Can that be riled out?

What searches still have to be done to find the truth of that possibility?

  21. @BorisMay

What more did you want him to say? He condemns Israel resolutely in the article and leaves no room for contention that the attack was not completely intentional.

  22. skrik says:

    It was a military target

IF so THEN why was it ‘spared’ up until then? [Spare = an item kept in case another item of the same type is lost, broken, or worn out], 67 other cities destroyed.

IF it was a military target THEN to ‘spare’ it would mean it was free to contribute to the Japanese war effort, harming the US war effort including the killing of ever more US forces, so to ‘spare’ it would be a traitorous act – it was spared to be an A-bomb target.

As BorisMay says [thnx], Japan was prevented from surrendering, partly by a) the deliberate, unreasonable threat to not ‘spare’ the Japanese emperor and b) US waiting until the A-bombs were ready.

As I said — about twenty percent of the people in the target area were military personnel.

Otherwise, we couldn’t bomb all the cities in Japan simultaneously. Unless you can show the B-29’s were stood down sometime previous to Hiroshima, you haven’t got much of an argument.

I feel somewhat differently about it. Yes, it would be hot news to most Americans — but that it was buried, that Lyndon Johnson was involved, etc is both secondary and something of a red herring. Above all, it’s important not to be seduced into arguing points that remain uncertain and are open to debate.

The critical and indisputable fact is that Israel deliberately and murderously attacked us, knowing it was us. That in turn demonstrates that she is no more our ally than, say, Hezbollah is.

That’ll suffice. Ram that one home and make them swallow it.
