Philosophy and humanities teacher Thaddeus Kozinski is the author of Modernity as Apocalypse: Sacred Nihilism and the Counterfeits of Logos. In this interview he discusses the historical and religious/spiritual implications of the onrushing tyranny triggered by the coronavirus pandemic. His essay for “Open Up California” is reproduced below.

Why Local Government and Police Need to Resist Covid-19 Tyranny

By Thaddeus Kozinski, for Reopen California

On May 8 I made a call to the SLO County Board of Supervisors meeting regarding agenda item one: “Update on COVID-19 in San Luis Obispo County and direction to staff as necessary. All Districts.” I only was able to say just a small part of what I wanted to say, and what follows is what I said and what I left out. I reference Governor Newsom of California here, but it applies to many other Governors and State and Federal (so-called) authorities.

It is the local, not state, governments that have the authority to oversee the details of health policy, for only they know their people and the idiosyncrasies of their local community. They know what’s best, not the governors! It is a violation of the principle of subsidiarity for a larger agency to take over the role that a lower agency can do better and is charged with direct oversight. Of course, all these lockdown edicts egregiously violate obvious God-given human rights, as well as constitutionally protected rights. The Constitution is the master law of the land, and the natural moral law is an even higher legal authority. As St. Augustine said, “An unjust law is no law at all.” In the face of unjust laws, prudence sometimes dictates civil disobedience. Prudence dictates this right now.

Gov. Newsom has become a tyrant, acting way outside his legal authority, and has been exercising unjust aggression against the people of California, aggression that is essentially no different than violence against an individual person; as such, we all have the legal and moral right to self-defense of our person and families. This means we have the moral obligation and legal right to defend ourselves against this violence. In this case, this means ignoring his threats and opening our businesses. This means that local governments, health officials, and policemen must also ignore his threats and care for the good of the people entrusted to them.

It is futile to try to comply with his “requirements” because a) they are impossible to meet; b) even if we could meet them, he would change them again (he has shown himself to be a liar); c) they are based upon false data, because as solid eyewitness evidence indicates, many hospitals and doctors are indicating Covid-19 as the cause of the deaths of patients untested for Covid-19, and who have more than likely died of other ailments.

The lockdown and other oppressive strictures do not have the authority of actual law, but are simply edicts backed only by the (real) threat of violence and financial punishment. They are in truth nothing more than bully threats—but if we obey them as if they were real laws, then they will become, de facto, real laws, and he will only turn the screws tighter. We cannot give in to a bully. Fear and ignorance are his only weapons, and we are no longer ignorant! And we must not give in to fear. God is with us.

While doing all we can to help protect those most vulnerable to this virus (all the non-propaganda evidence indicates that the vast majority of those who get infected with this do not die or even get sick), we must not treat everyone wily-nily as sick and a threat to others! So, we must resist and disobey these lockdown edicts now, right now, when we still can. If enough people disobey the counterfeit authority of Newsom with regard to the lockdown and associated edicts, he and his minions will not be able to do anything about it! If he reacts with more extended violence, well, we’ll have to decide what to do at that point. Chances are that he will be forced to do nothing.

There is good evidence to suggest that the real, long-term purpose of the global-wide lockdown is to destroy the world economy by forced austerity and depression, and the purpose of this to install a control system of political and economic oppression akin to the Hunger Games, including a mandatory vaccine for the purpose of depopulation, surveillance, and economic (social-credit) control (see the “Plandemic” documentary on this). These wicked elites also want to make social isolation, fear of our neighbor, wearing masks, etc., the “new normal,” for it is a kind of emotional and psychological torture that makes us more susceptible to their propaganda and coercion.

Spiritually, we are truly dealing here with wicked powers and principalities that we can’t overcome with mere human power, and so we must above all pray for God’s help and repent and seek to do the Divine Will at every moment. All Christians, and everyone of good-will (or who just don’t want to live in the Hunger Games) must join together in this fight. I am encouraged by the following statement of a few Catholic bishops and leaders, who are calling their fellow Catholics to a worldwide resistance to the evils these tyrants and liars are inflicting on us. You can read their letter here:

The facts have shown that, under the pretext of the Covid-19 epidemic, the inalienable rights of citizens have in many cases been violated and their fundamental freedoms, including the exercise of freedom of worship, expression and movement, have been disproportionately and unjustifiably restricted. Public health must not and cannot become an alibi for infringing on the rights of millions of people around the world, let alone for depriving the civil authority of its duty to act wisely for the common good. This is particularly true as growing doubts emerge from several quarters about the actual contagiousness, danger and resistance of the virus. Many authoritative voices in the world of science and medicine confirm that the alarmism about Covid-19 by the media appears to be absolutely unjustified.

We have reason to believe, on the basis of official data on the incidence of the epidemic as related to the number of deaths, that there are powers interested in creating panic among the world’s population with the sole aim of permanently imposing unacceptable forms of restriction on freedoms, of controlling people and of tracking their movements. The imposition of these illiberal measures is a disturbing prelude to the realization of a World Government beyond all control.

We also believe that in some situations the containment measures that were adopted, including the closure of shops and businesses, have precipitated a crisis that has brought down entire sectors of the economy. This encourages interference by foreign powers and has serious social and political repercussions. These forms of social engineering must be stopped by those with governmental responsibility, by taking measures to protect their citizens, whom they represent and in whose interests they have a serious obligation to act. Likewise, let them help the family, the cell of society, by not unreasonably penalizing the weak and elderly, forcing them into a painful separation from their loved ones. The criminalization of personal and social relationships must likewise be judged as an unacceptable part of the plan of those who advocate isolating individuals in order to better manipulate and control them.

Here are two well-researched sources for some of the claims made in this article:

  1. As shown in this article, the World Health Organization, which is driving the world’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, has yet another solution to the current “crisis”:

WHO is doing its very best to control every aspect of our lives in this new “reality”.

Kinda reminds me of 9/11. Just imagine your worst fears. The most cynical and evil explanation. The unthinkable. And it turns out to be true.

  3. eD says:

In response to Sally Snyder’s comment, I have been expecting another go-round of alcohol prohibition, and thought that this health emergency would be used as a cover to re-introduce it, since the war on drunk driving was taking too long. And this is being used as a cover to introduce all sorts of agendas (what is happening to religious services is also notable) and this would be one of them. However, encouragingly, attempts were made early on to ban sales of alcohols and they generated some of the earliest opposition to the lockdown. An attempt to keep the bars and pubs closed permanently have a bigger chance of success, though restaurants wanting to sell alcohol, where they have their biggest profit margins, will be a problem for the prohibitionists. As Philip Greenspun pointed out, Prohibition I is not a good guide since law enforcement was much weaker then.

On the article itself, it contains a valid point, though its somewhat buried. Legal challenges to the emergency measures are starting to make their way through the court system, and a British Supreme Court justice spoke out against them early on. One issue is that,to my knowledge, in the USA no state legislature has passed legislation enacting the lockdown. The British parliament rushed through legislation establishing martial law in the UK (though this could still be challeneged legally), but internationally that seems to be it. Everything is being done by executive edict, maybe using vague and over-large powers granted by earlier poorly drafted legislation.

There have been a couple of instances of state legislatures voting against the lockdowns, then the governors vetoed the legislation lifting the lockdown. But that is not how it is supposed to work. One problem with the American system of government is that the executive can do anything it wants, and dare the legislature to come up with a two thirds majority to override a veto or impeach and remove (parliamentary systems to some extent don’t have this problem). But if a legislature tries to stop a governor from exercising powers granted under earlier legislation, for example by voting to repeal such legislation, then it should be taken as evidence by the courts that the executive did in fact exceed its powers and take action not actually allowed by that earlier legislation. There is also the endemic problem of emergency legislation being used without any time limit.

The crux of all this, even on a global scale, applied locally.

Maybe, just maybe, a couple of guys here could try to think about:
WHEN the pain of economic..ahm…recession…hits the middle class in the West (some say in three months) will it go as planned as TPTBs or not? So far it’s been simply beautiful from their point of view. BUT, the real pain still hasn’t hit. The fear of the…ahm…. plague still overshadows, at the moment, the fear of living in poverty.

Or, the ONLY question that really interests me in all this plandemic is: will TPTBs be capable to use force against the protesters?
Or, more accurately: do the top of the Administrator class. locally, in the West, have the guts to order security services to open fire?
And, do the rank and especially the file, have the guts to execute (pun intended) the order?

In my book, all hinges on that.
Don’t have the full answer, although have some ideas about how all that will roll out.

The Constitution is the master law of the land, …

What does this really mean for the kinds of abstruse, unforeseeable issues and questions that arise today? — the Supreme Court ‘interprets’ the Constitution as permitting or not permitting all kinds of wacky nonsense, including the “right” to murder an unborn child, that Americans must pay to educate the kids of illegal aliens, etc etc — at what point does it become a farce?

… and the natural moral law is an even higher legal authority.

While I agree there is a higher moral authority, ultimately your rights are nothing more or less than what you are prepared to secure and protect by force of arms.

Which is why Americans must never allow the state to have a monopoly on weapons.

  9. Yusef says:

I wonder if the rank and file would have the guts to not obey such an order. The guts and the brains to defy their superiors… In other words, I wonder if the rank and file has the moral courage to do the right thing. I have to be honest– I don’t think they do. It is really pretty easy to fire a gun and kill unarmed people. Matter of fact, they’ve been doing just that all over the world. We chose not to notice or consider the implications. I did notice when the police began to have an “us” versus “them” mentality and dropped the “to serve and protect” mottoes.

Well, that’s The Topic which has been interesting to me since the beginning of the panic-flu.

My take is that a lot of people actually didn’t buy the plandemic, BUT, not keen to confront the system. Simply too much to lose (fines, jail). Or, too much money to lose for a matter of principle or simple inconvenience.
BUT, what happens when that equation doesn’t work anymore? No money either way.

Pierce was correct, of course. There is, really, just one thing that matters to Americans. Or any Westerner. Or, when you really think about it, to any person on this planet.
So…what happens when that thing is taken away from you?

If some people are correct we are, in a couple of months, about to really feel the …ahm..”recession”.The real pain. How are we going to react to it is The Question.
I guess the Admins will reintroduce the ….”plague”. Heavy lockdown. The second wave or whatever; they’ll think about something to keep us under control.
Maybe this time a lot of people won’t buy it. Such people tend to vent their anger. Maybe even through mass protests.
Now….what happens when, OK, if, several thousand people congregate in front of offices of local Administrators yelling thier demands? That could break the fear block on the “normies”. Can’t be allowed to happen.
    The Admins will use force.
The real question is…what happens if…when, batons and water cannon can’t work?

You could be correct in “I wonder if the rank and file has the moral courage to do the right thing.”
But, at the same time, cops aren’t dumb. And, more importantly, among those protesters can, very likely, be their neighbors, even friends.

I know that the answer to that question can’t be found anywhere on DR. Probably nowhere in public. In fact, I am sure that TPTBs are working hard to get that answer as we speak. So far they’ve shown an excellent forward-thinking and execution of that. “We” failed. Miserably.
Maybe…just time “we” could do better. Three months from now?!

Not holding my breath, of course.

  11. It is really pretty easy to fire a gun and kill unarmed people.

Yes, a lot of East Germans thought that for far too long. When the Monday Demonstrations in Leipzig first started, you had a few thousand show up and many were beaten down and arrested. When 70,000, then 120,000, then 300,000 in successive weeks showed up, chanting, “We are the people,” nobody wanted to give the order for a massacre, and that was the end of the DDR.

How hard is it to get 70k people out of 40m to show up in Sacramento and demand their freedom?

  12. Mike P says:
    @The Alarmist

and that was the end of the DDR.

Well, there is another difference – the end of the DDR was greatly accelerated by its being completely broke. Couldn’t happen here …

How hard is it to get 70k people out of 40m to show up in Sacramento and demand their freedom?

Or, how to help make it happen?
Not that place only, as we speak, but a lot of places in West if…when….the the real thing hits the fan.Three…six months from now.

“We” failed, miserably, this time. “They” played their game beautifully, hands down.
Can “we” learn something from this, rather humiliating, experience? Can “we” in three, six months, do better?

    If so, how?
Or, will we see, anywhere in “DR” space, “our”..ahm…best and brightest, discussing/debating that?
Watching/monitoring, carefully, the impact on lower 60 % of society? Pointing what can and can not be done?
Ultimately, trying to prepare people for mass protest(s).

Or, keep endlessly…ahm…” discuss/debate” the usual?

    Funny, almost.

  16. I am working my way through the James Perloff article, and it’s pretty impressive. I want to be open-minded about the whole COVID-19 situation, but after hearing (or reading) the testimonies of the nurse and the doctor regarding the ineffectiveness (or, as the nurse stated, the potential hazard) of wearing masks, and reviewing the charts comparing the fatalities of COVID to other causes of death, I am inclined to think that our leaders are doing a lot more harm than good. Whether or not they mean to, I don’t know. Candace Owens’ video is, so far, my favorite part. Here is someone who understands politicians maybe a little better than most.

The USSR ran out of money. The Soviet Empire could no longer afford to support a puppet, nor field troops. Just like what happened with Rome, the Elites gave a war, but nobody came. It takes a helluva lot of money to keep a standing army, let alone pay them. And in the case of Empire, we require a foreign, yet reliable force to maintain that army. The DDR had a fine military, but even the most hard core member of the Comintern would never think to call out East German troops against East Germans. Obviously the chances of the guns being turned on their masters were too great. Since the Soviets were not paying their army, the USSR legions stationed there were not going to get into a civil war; professional soldiers do not put themselves in Fort Apache situations willingly. They knew the USSR would leave them hanging, and the smartest place to be was in barracks, ready to fight their way back to the Motherland should the need arise.

The Empire that we now find ourselves pitted against has a similar problem the the DDR had; the Army is composed of the same people being put down. American leftists have no stomach for real warfare, and the peasant soldiers that rallied to the Bolshevik banner, or to the Republic of 1789 France have no representation on the Left. Basically, we have the technocrats assuming that drones and electronic surveillance will cow the working class into obedience. This hasn’t worked in Iraq, Afghanistan or the various other turd world countries that have refused to bow a knee. Should the Empire implode, then we will see China move on Taiwan and take a dominant status in the East, Russia will no doubt treat a weakened EU as a vassal state, and the remains of the US will be lucky to hold off Mexico, which will no doubt move on the Border states. All in all, the Revenge of the Nerds will result in a weakened Angloshere. The hubris of the tech nerd lords and their Israeli allies is leading to a nemesis that seems to be bringing down the civilization it has fed upon. Ultimately the people that stand up against the Panic will dominate. The simple Mexican worker is unaffected, as an example. The weak in their herd will die, the strong survive. They don’t expect any different. And they despise the weakness of the Anglo for his capitulation to authority. They Watch, They Know. And 51% of the Calif populace are from their stock. The liberals have no idea the forces they will unleash; their disdain for these people is unfathomable. And should a renewed Aztec Empire resurge they will be its first victims

Both professional and political arrogance is responsible for the present state of the world economy and world population as well.
A common annual “flu virus” was promoted as a “pandemic” by the “smartest” and “best and brightest” people in positions of power, both in the USA and in the rest of the world.
These “best and brightest” convinced political “leaders” to impose mandatory business closures, “lockdowns” and “quarantines” on healthy populations, which is contrary to every common sense and scientific principle.
These “business closures” were not imposed “across the board”, but were picked by political hacks as “winners and losers”. Liquor stores, marijuana dispensaries, lottery retailers, and certain “big box” home improvement and sporting goods stores were permitted to remain in operation, while just about all small businesses were forced to close.
In some states, the political arrogance was so great, plant nurseries, seed distributors, and other businesses were deemed “non-essential” and forced to close. Even “big box” stores were prohibited from selling lawn and garden supplies. Many restaurants were also put out of business by these clearly unconstitutional edicts.
Imposing “quarantines” and “lockdowns” on healthy people does nothing to insure public health, and in fact delays necessary herd immunity.
Public health is further damaged by business closures, especially small businesses whose owners rely on continuing business as a means of making a living, both for themselves and their employees.
A major problem is that these “best and brightest” and political “leaders” are so arrogant that they refuse to admit that “they screwed up, big time”. Instead, they “double down” and inflict further pain on the public by refusing to insist that “they were wrong”. None of them will pay personally for their arrogance, stupidity, and just outright dishonesty and criminality.
All one has to do is look at the “coronavirus hospitals” that were created to handle the “overflow” of coronavirus patients which never materialized. These “hospitals” were a waste of taxpayer dollars and did absolutely nothing to promote public health.
At the same time, local hospitals were required to cease admissions, even for those of an emergency nature. Although not specifically stated, the public with health problems were covertly “encouraged” to avoid hospitals at all costs because of the phony “coronavirus” claims.
Health professionals are also responsible for the current state of affairs, also refusing to admit that “they screwed up, big time” as well, and continue to insist that this annual flue is a “pandemic”.
Then we have the “heavy hitters” with money, such as Bill Gates and Stephen Fauci who claim that they have “solutions” to our (artificially contrived) health problems. Gates is so arrogant the he feels that he can get away with genocide by using mandatory vaccinations to “cull” the world population.
Gates “vaccination” programs in third-world countries failed to adhere to good medical practices, and the Nuremberg principle that “informed consent” must reign supreme in the administration of all medical procedures.
Gates’ “vaccination” programs introduced polio into children in India for which he and his program were banned from the country. Gates’ African “vaccination” programs surreptitiously introduced sterilization and birth-control compounds as part of their vaccination program without gaining “informed consent” from the recipients.
According to these moneyed types and even “health care” officials, we are to be branded, tagged, and treated like cattle with no means to make informed choices about our health or health care decisions.
Wearing masks and “social distancing” are no different than the “security theater” that we experience at airports with the TSA.
There are no valid reasons for “mask-wearing” or “social distancing” for healthy people. “Lockdowns”, “business closures”, and “quarantining” of healthy people is being used for “control” and nothing more. The “powers that be” are desirous to see “how far they can go” to get the world population to accede to their demands.
Fortunately, there are a lot more of us than there are of . We (still) have the power of the internet to bypass the “filters” that they put in place to keep us from seeing their “real” motives.

Not all hospital services were curtailed. Radiation therapy centers associated with hospitals remained open and continued a brisk, extremely expensive — and lucrative — business. For example, a 15 min dose of radiation is billed @ \$1800; typically, 30 to 35 such treatments are prescribed. In at least one hospital-associated radiation therapy center in the DC Metro area serviced a steady stream of patients.

Such centers often bear the names and plaques of philanthropic “donors.” Or are they investors? Are the physician-specialists whose names head those centers, and who prescribe the course of treatment, also investors?

Functioning radiation centers within hospitals are carrying out “mask” and “social distancing” “security theater” to the max.
PLUS, even the pretense of patient-centered care has been inverted by the HERO meme.

Remember in the good old days when we said “thank you for your service” to our military “heroes”?
A whole new cadre of heroes who “put their lives on the line” to “protect us” has been added to the police state hierarchy — the medical community.

“Heroes Work Here” signs punctuate the entrances to medical centers — it’s the first thing that a ‘patient’ sees.
In one center, a tractor-trailer rig is parked at the entrance to hospital, its side bearing huge letters, Thank You to our Heroes.

After genuflecting to Heroes, stop at the hand sanitizer stand (remember holy water? See Hail’s “Virus is a Cult”)
Then step up to the next 6′ mark on the floor where a masked, plastic-shielded, gloved former McDonalds employee will fully extend her arm and aim an infrared thermometer at your forehead.
If you are not already masked, that same arm will hand you a mask in a bag.
If you are expected to pay something, the arm will extend a bag for you to drop your ID or credit card.
Passing all these essential procedures to keep you and the entire universe safe from the cooties you carry, The Arm will shorten the distance sufficiently to band you.

I’ve been trotted through this “security theater” nearly 25 times. One time, sanitized and masked, I walked past the screener without submitting to temperature check or banding. The screener called after me but I kept walking.

After that treatment, I was called into Nurse Ratched’s HDQT and scolded for 10 minutes. Nurse Ratched said my behavior had upset the entire unit — “Everybody was aware.” Unless I promised not to repeat that behavior, all remaining treatments would be canceled:
“If you do not agree to temperature screening, you cannot have radiation. It’s that simple. After all, you can’t get on a plane if you don’t go through TSA.”
Yes, Nurse Ratched actually used that example.
She turned to her computer and prepared to delete remaining treatments from the schedule.

Apparently, banding and screening temperature is far more critical than carrying out a prescribed medical treatment; and since a nurse-Hero can change the prescription at a moment’s notice, the residual cancer in my brain is not nearly as life-threatening as the radiation oncologist claimed when he prescribed an extensive regimen of radiation.

They could be: doctors can be owners or partners (“investors”) in facilities that offer diagnostic (e.g. imaging) or treatment (e.g. radiation) services; there is nothing illegal or inherently wrong about that — however, it is an obvious conflict of interest, as well as generally illegal, for doctors to refer their own patients to such facilities where they have a financial interest.

But as is often the case, there is a loophole in the general prohibition of “self-referral”, one which has led to some abuse:

The ability to self-refer is an incentive for physicians to order more tests than they otherwise might. In the United States, the Stark Law (specifically sections I and II) was designed to control self-referrals. However, the exceptions designed to allow necessary testing in physicians’ offices have been exploited to circumvent the law. The in-office exception, which allows testing on equipment in the physician’s office, has resulted in many physicians purchasing high-tech and expensive equipment such as CT scanners, MRI scanners, and nuclear scanners for their own offices.
