Ann Tomkins talks about her personal experience living and working in Beijing during the first five years of the Cultural Revolution, in which she was first an observer, and then a participant. Robert Weil discusses some of the reasoning that led to the Cultural Revolution, which was a revolution within a revolultion, and some of the enduring ideas about people and society that it spawned.
