Here’s my bit to add. My honeymoon was in July 1991 – a cruise in the Baltic which included two days in Leningrad (now St Pete, again). What I meant was – the place was a dump with crummy Soviet buildings and infrastructure, the people were tough, sour and broken-down in spirit. Most dressed in black or brown shabby clothes. It was all entirely obvious how decrepit the country was.

It just struck me that we had been duped about that threat and decades later, I still think that. If the Cold War had been highly exaggerated – then, why was it? For the MIC? Or were there more reasons?

The entire internet can be construed as one giant DARPA operation. It inevitably being used to target each and every person on the planet.

Context is important. You visited the soon-to-be former USSR barely five months before its demise. At that time, the country was rife with secession, collapsing infrastructure, interethnic tension, economic insecurity, and skyrocketing violent crime. Soviets, especially in the RSFSR, had little to be happy about in the summer of 1991. Of course, major strains in the Soviet system were already apparent by Brezhnev’s time, but had you visited the USSR ten years before, you likely would have had a different impression about the place and its potential threat. (Not that I personally believe there actually was any realistic threat ca. 1981.)

I think it’s been rotten from the beginning because the OSS was rotten too. In the past, it was even worse than in recent years because they had zero accountability and no media that wasn’t in their hip pocket. They operated with complete impunity. The CIA collects intel and analyzes foreign threats. There was no greater threat to our country than illegal immigration which the CIA should have brought to Congress as an issue under their jurisdiction.
