The recent essay by Thomas Dalton PhD. attacking Jesus—the subject of this critique—was written with a view toward engaging with figures on the white nationalist far-Right who allegedly hold some vestige of Christian beliefs, and disabusing them of those beliefs.
There will be those who will assert that because Dalton’s views are demonstrably false there is no need to refute them. In this writer’s opinion that is a serious misreading of the state of American politics and the extent of the radical dissatisfaction with the present System on the part of people to whom Dalton is appealing.
A revival and rehabilitation of Hitler’s reputation is unlikely to occur if leaders on the far-right retain some considerable nostalgia for the Judean savior of humanity and the book He and His followers quoted approvingly hundreds of times: the Old Testament.
By conflating the Talmud with the Old Testament (as did the London Times journalist Douglas Reed in the 1950s, in The Controversy of Zion), the revival of the National Socialist ideology becomes more likely.
Dalton’s essay, “Jesus the Jew,” first published in The Occidental Observer, and this week to a much larger audience at the Unz Review, endorses the dogma of Orthodox Judaism—that the Babylonian Talmud and successor halachic texts, such as the Shulchan Aruch, are not a nullification of the Old Testament, but an “elaboration” of it.
He offers no evidence for this enormity, which is an article of Orthodox rabbinic faith, other than his own ipse dixit, along with a footnote which refers to a 1929 book purporting to be a “summation” by Eric Bischoff of the Shulchan Aruch, which Dr. Dalton has translated into English (The original German text is here).
The Torah sheBeal peh in the Second Temple Period
Shulchan Aruch is in fact, like the Talmud Bavli itself, a compendium of escape clauses intended to evade Old Testament laws, together with minutiae governing the micromanagement of the lives of the unfortunate Judaic captive who are to it. The Shulchan Aruch’s antecedent is the Torah sheBeal peh (oral law), which Mr Dalton imagines didn’t exist in the time of Jesus. He writes:
“Nick Fuentes dodges the question (of Jesus identity) when put to him, saying ‘Jesus fulfills the law’ and that the Jews ‘who remain’ held on to ‘old sacrifices and old ways of doing things,’ ultimately becoming ‘Talmudic Jews.’
“Obviously Jesus had no chance to become a Talmudic Jew, given that the Jerusalem Talmud was not written until the 300s (in Galilee!) and the Babylonian Talmud not until the year 500” (end quote).
In point of fact, Talmudism as it developed in the first four centuries A.D. is a recrudescence of the religion of the Pharisees, which was predicated on the oral law, as Jesus clearly stated when he denounced it in Mark 7 and Matthew 15 as that which, “teaches for doctrine the commandments of men.”
Hence, Dalton’s notion that “Jesus had no chance to become a Talmudic Jew” is in error when we understand that the early Talmud (Mishnah) existed in oral form during His lifetime and that Jesus could have adhered and propounded the Torah sheBeal peh, as did His Pharisaic enemies.
The Book of the Teachings of the Pharisees: The Mishnah
After the Jewish leaders urged the crucifixion of Israel’s Messiah, the ideology which had previously remained oral, was committed to writing in the Tannaic era as the Mishnah, personified by Ta’nnaim such as the “zugot pairs” Hillel and Shammai.
The Gemara, based upon the Mishnah, was formed in the Amoraic era (300-600 A.D.) in Palestine and Babylon, comprising the supreme law of Judaism, though only the Babylonian (“Bavli”) Talmud has halachic (legal) authority.
The Geonic era (600-1000 A.D.) witnessed the rise of the Jewish Karaite movement which declared the Talmud Bavli to be a tissue of anthropomorphic falsification of Yahweh’s Old Testament. For centuries Karaites, designated as apikorsim(heretics) who dared to adhere only to the Hebrew Bible, were persecuted, hounded and even killed by Talmudists. Maimonides, the philosopher of homicide, taught: “It is a mitzvah (blessed act) to kill a traitor” (Hilchot Shovel UMazik, ch. 8, Halachot 8-9). At one point, the Catholic Church joined in the persecution. In 12th century Spain, Catholic authorities supported the local Talmudic community in helping them expel Karaites from Spain. Karaites who refused to leave were compelled to convert to rabbinic Judaism.( Cf. Nathan Schur, Karaite Encyclopedia (1995), pp. 267-268).
Dr. Dalton proceeds to propagate an even more egregious fiction when he alleges the following:
“The second defense one occasionally sees is both contorted and confused: that the teachings of the Old Testament represent ‘true’ religion and that the Hebrews deviated from this true path, degenerating into a rabbinical and ultimately Talmudic Judaism…. Jesus, they say, adhered to the true, original teachings, to the Law and the prophets—later to be called “Christianity”—thus putting him into conflict with the fallen and erroneous Jews…it overlooks the fact that the Talmud, and later documents like the Shulchan Aruch, are elaborations on Old Testament teachings, not deviations from it.”
The Talmud Bavli and the Shulchan Aruch of Joseph Karo, as well as the Mishneh Torah of Maimonides, the Kitzer Shulchan Aruch of Shlomo Ganfried, the Mishnah Berurah of Yisrael Meir Kagan, the Aruch HaShulchan of Yechiel Epstein and dozens of other authoritative works of the rabbinic canon, have the force law and represent a theology alien to the Old Testament while massively undercutting and negating it, for example denigrating patriarch Noah and enthusing over the killing of the prophet Isaiah with barely concealed glee.
Moreover, Chazal (the Talmudic “sages”) place their books above God’s Word in the hierarchy of importance. In BT Baba Metzia 33a we read: “For those who engage in the study of Bible, it is a virtue but not a complete virtue. For those who engage in the study of Mishnah, it is a virtue and they receive reward for its study. For those who engage in the study of Talmud, you have no virtue greater than that.”
Talmudism consists of distortion and falsification of the Old Testament because it is is based on anthropomorphic traditions that void the Scripture by means of a series of dispensations and loopholes.
These begin with the Mishnah, which represents the commitment to the writing of the occult legends and lore of those Israelites who had preserved “secret knowledge” which had arisen with the worship of the golden calf, of Moloch and similar abominations.
With the rejection of their Messiah and the commitment of the formerly oral traditions to writing, these Israelites abandoned themselves to an oral law counterfeit of Yahweh’s Word—the primary canon being the Mishnah— “oral tradition learned by constant repetition.”
Babylonian tradition in Talmud tractates BT Berakot 5a and BT Shabbat 31a teach that the Mishnah and the rest of the Talmud (Gemara) were given by God to Moses on Mt. Sinai, along with the Ten Commandments. The Mishnah was completed at the end of the Second Century A.D., more than 100 years after the destruction of the second Temple by the Romans in 70 A.D. (The exceptions are the tractates Sotah and Abot which are later additions misrepresented as a part of the original Mishnah by the rabbinic “sages” themselves). Engulfed in a sea of everlasting hair-splitting, Talmudic texts can be minefields of deception and pits of derangement and pilpul, as befits those who would replace the Bible with their own authority.
“Whoever claims that David sinned is simply mistaken”
Intense self-worship and self-deception, like the imputation of blamelessness and relative sinlessness, are hallmarks of Talmudic megalomania. Talmudism’s theology encourages the cardinal sin of pride. It removes the responsibility for transgressions against the law of God. For instance, what Christians regard as one of the darkest episodes in King David’s life — his adultery with Bathsheba and his order for the murder of Uriah — Talmudists teach that David did not really sin with Uriah the Hittite’s wife, Bathsheba, by committing adultery with her.
According to the standard teaching in Orthodox yeshiviot (cf. BT Shabbat 56a): “Kol haomer David chatah eino ela toeh” (“Whoever claims that David sinned is simply mistaken”). The Talmud’s story line is that King David only stumbled into the sin with Bat-Sheva for pedagogical reasons, in order to teach the Jewish people the proper path to individual teshuva (repentance).
Talmudism holds that David did not have the intent to sin with Bathsheba (“Bat-Sheva”). It was not a “true sin” because David sinned for a good cause — not to satisfy his lusts, of course — but on high moral grounds, in order to teach Jews the proper path to repentance.
This is quite an alibi. One problem with it: nowhere does the Bible state or teach this. In fact, this rabbinic doctrine completely contradicts II Samuel 12: 5-14. The Bible in no uncertain terms states that David did evil in the sight of God and by so doing contemptuously despised God. The Bible says nothing about David having a godly ulterior motive for cohabitating with another man’s wife. Rather it says in verse 14 that God was outraged by what was in effect a kind of blasphemy (“na’ats”; cf. Strong’s #5006).
What the Talmudists are actually saying is that it is God who is mistaken, since God’s Word clearly declares that David sinned by killing Uriah the Hittite and taking Uriah’s wife: “Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house because thou hast despised me and hast taken the wife of Urriah the Hittite to be thy wife.” (II Samuel 12:10).
Who should we believe, God’s Word in the Old Testament book of Samuel, or the word of the Pharisees as found in the Babylonian Talmud?
“Many laws which have scant Scriptural basis”
The Mishnah, the first written Talmudic law book, testifies to the Biblical nullification it undertakes by stating in its own pages:
“The laws concerning the Sabbath, Festal-offerings and acts of trespass are as mountains hanging by a hair, for they have scant Scriptural basis but many laws”—Mishnah Hagiga I, 8.
Because it is regarded by the rabbis as the supreme revelation of Sinai, having been passed down orally, in secret, across millennia, the Mishnah is a law unto itself which does not need to claim a Biblical basis for its authority.
A Remarkable Admission form Yale University’s authority on the Mishnah
A preeminent 20th century American rabbi, Jacob Neusner, translator of the Mishnah for Yale University Press, writes:
“… Scripture plays little role in the Mishnaic system. The Mishnah rarely cites a verse of Scripture, refers to Scripture as an entity, links its own ideas to those of Scripture, or lays claim to originate in what Scripture has said, even by indirect or remote allusion to a Scriptural verse of teaching…The Mishnah is a document of imagination and fantasy…Mishnah…is remarkably indifferent to the Hebrew Scriptures…
“In fact, the Mishnah is…a principal holy book of Judaism. The Mishnah has been and is now memorized in the circle of all those who participate in the religion, Judaism…the two great documents formed around the Mishnah and so shaped as to serve, in part, as commentaries upon Mishnah, namely, the Babylonian Talmud and the Palestinian Talmud, form the center of the curriculum of Judaism as a living religion.” (The Mishnah: A New Translation (New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 1988), p. xvii.
In the Talmud Noah is depicted as a reprehensible individual
Much is made of the “Noachide laws” for gentiles, including the U.S. government’s Public Law 102-14 which has pronounced these rabbinic “Noachide laws” noble and, by implication, worthy of enforcement. However, the “Noah” of the Noachide (“Noahide”) laws is not the Biblical Noah, whom the Talmud despises.
About Noah, the Holy Bible teaches: Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God. (Genesis 6:9). In Hebrew, “blameless” denotes without flaw. Noah is a precursor of Abraham, not less than Abraham. What is required of Noah, God also requires of Abraham: to walk before Him blameless.
The “sages” of the Talmud teach however, that the phrase “in his generation” indicates that in any other generation Noah would not be holy or significant: “Noah was only righteous in his generation; had he lived in the generation of Abraham, he would not have been considered significant at all.” (B.T. Sanhedrin 108a).
The Talmud is wrong to denigrate Noah. And it gets worse. The rabbinic Midrash declares that no good was found in Noah (Midrash Rabbah: Genesis I [Soncino 1983, vol. 1], p. 289.). This Midrash also teaches that Noah was an alcoholic who was castrated when he was on his way to have coitus (Ibid., pp. 290-291; 293).
Noah, we are also told, was unworthy to transmit the Torah shebeal peh to Klal Israel. Noah was supposedly too defective to merit this distinction:
“…the Torah became uninterested (in Noah) following the episode of the vineyard.”
Where is this detraction of Noah found in the Bible? In the Bible, Noah is a second Adam. Christians see a parallel between the saving wood of his Ark and the wood of Christ’s cross on Calvary.
In Talmudism, however, Noah is a low character. The writer(s) make reference to “Bereishis 9,” the Talmudic and Midrashic rabbinic tradition, wherein Noah is castigated as a drunkard.
One Talmudic libel of Noah centers on the malicious fantasy that the patriarch was sodomized on board the ark by Ham. This is not in God’s Biblical Word. It was made up out of whole cloth by the Midrash (the Gemara meanwhile equivocates between asserting Ham sodomized Noah and Ham castrating him; cf. Sanhderin 70a).
The Old Testament only states: “aser asah lo beno ha-qatan” (that which his younger son had done to him; Genesis 9:24). From there the salacious imagination of man runs wild.
Jesus declared that the Pharisees were the spiritual heirs of those who killed the prophets and were witnesses against themselves in this regard (Matthew 23:31). The Babylonian Talmud contains just such a witness: BT Yebamoth 49b states that the prophet Isaiah was justifiably killed for declaring that the Israelites had unclean lips.
Your Sons Have Corrected You, Yahweh
By Yahweh’s law of the Old Testament, Shemittah (the Sabbatical Seventh Year) renders all loans null and void. Deuteronomy 15: 1-2: “At the end of every seven years you must cancel debts. This is how it is to be done: Every creditor shall cancel any loan they have made to a fellow Israelite. They shall not require payment from anyone among their own people, because the Lord’s time for canceling debts has been proclaimed.”
Beginning with the Pharisee Hillel, it was decided that this law of Yahweh could be nullified for the benefit of lenders. A lender can avoid having the debts canceled by executing a “prozbul.” To cancel Yahweh’s law which was institued to liberate the Israelite people from debt peonage, the Talmud informs us in BT Gittin 36a:
“The Mishnah taught that Hillel the Elder instituted a document that prevents the sabbatical year from abrogating an outstanding debt. We learned in a mishnah (Shevi’it 10:3) if one writes a prozbul the sabbatical year does not abrogate the debt. This is one of the matters that Hillel the elder instituted…”
This is not “elaboration” as Orthodox rabbis and Thomas Dalton would have us believe. It is falsification. Here is more:
In the Old Testament God proclaims His name to His people, pronounced Yahweh in Hebrew (Jehovah in English):
“I am YHWH that is my name” (Isiah 42:8; Jeremiah 33:2).
“This is my name forever” (Exodus 3:15).
“My people shall know my name” (Isaiah 52:6).
“Hitherto hath YHWH blessed me” (Joshua 17:14).
“This is the statue of the law which YHWH hath commanded” (Numbers 19:2).
“And YHWH gave command unto Moses, so did Aaron set it down before the Testimony, as a thing to be preserved.” (Exodus 16:34).
Yahweh’s name appears several thousand times in the Old Testament.
In the traditions of the elders of the Pharisees, committed to writing as the Mishnah, the name YHWH, by which God wanted us to know Him and identify ourselves, was forbidden, replaced by circumlocution (“LORD” or “Hashem”). The failure to make the substitution and engage in the suppression is condemned as a serious sin. The Mishnah defines the eternally damned in these terms: “Those who have no portion in the world to come: he who pronounces the divine name as it is spelled out.”

Talmudic megalomania’s nullification of God’s Word reaches a narcissistic pitch in BT Bava Metzia 59b. There, in a debate between God and the rabbis, the rabbis win the debate. The Talmud has God say, “My sons have defeated Me, My sons have defeated Me!”
When it comes to the use of His Holy Name, as He commanded, it appears as though your “sons” have corrected you, Yahweh — or so they think.
The Right Honorable Lord Jonathan Sacks, Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth of Great Britain from 1991 to 2013, wrote in The Guardian newspaper (December 21, 2001), that he loves “that extraordinary moment in the Talmud in which God is outvoted on a point of Jewish law and celebrates the fact that His children have defeated Him.”
Most of the leaders of the West and the priests and pastors of Churchianity love it too.
When men institutionalize their egos to such an extent that they celebrate God Himself having been defeated by them, we are no longer in a realm that is even remotely Biblical.
The Talmud is persistent in testifying against itself in this regard. The chutzpah beggars belief:
“Since God already gave the Torah to the Jewish people on Mt. Sinai we no longer pay attention to heavenly voices. God must submit to the decisions of a majority vote of the rabbis.” (BT Bava Metzia 59b).
And:
In Talmudism a zaddik (also spelled Tzadik), is a spiritual master “whose righteousness surpasses his iniquity” (cf. Maimonides, M ishneh Torah, Sefer Madda, 3:1). The zaddik is believed to have the power to change heavenly decrees and alter divine judgments. The Babylonian Talmud states approvingly in the Gemara, “God decrees and the zaddik nullifies the decree” (Mo’ed Kattan 16b).
A Talmid chacham can supply many hundreds of instances in which the Mishnah, Gemara and successor texts with halachic status, such as those of the posekim Joseph Karo, overthrow Yahweh’s word with vain abandon. For instance, in Genesis, Yahweh decrees that man shall live by the sweat his brow. Rabbi Karo, compiler of the Shulchan Aruch, decrees in the Kefesh Mishneh that Talmud scholars are not required to work and can be supported by taxes.
Thomas Dalton’s didactic statements are intended to refute and dismiss centuries of classical Talmud scholarship by giants such as Johann Andreas Eisenmenger (Entdecktes Judenthum), Johann David Michaelis (Mosaisches Recht) and Alexander McCaul (The Talmud Tested)—are a grave disservice to his readers.
The Talmudic texts and their halachic sequels are not of Moses, they are, in the words of the Kabbalah, “where Moses is buried” (Tikkunei Zohar 1:27).
“Illustrations and reasons of the laws of Moses I never take from the Talmud. The oral traditions of the…rabbis…give not the sense of the Mosaic writings. Many of the laws in the Pentateuch would make a strange figure indeed, if we were to interpret them as the Pharisees did, whose exposition, according to Christ’s declaration, in many cases served to inculcate doctrines and precepts directly the reverse of what Moses had taught, and commanded.” —J.D. Michaelis, Commentaries on the Laws of Moses, vol. 1, pp. 51-52 (Great Britain, 1815). Michaelis was Professor of Old Testament exegesis, Hebrew antiquities, Mosaic law and Semitics languages at the University of Götttingen from 1745-1791.

I’m a big fan of M. Hoffman, but, I think the gist of this article is that the Talmud is not based on the Torah, the Talmud is bad, and the Torah is good. And that is complete nonsense – from my reading of various passages the Torah is more bloodthirsty than the Talmud, and while the Torah is essentially humorless, the Talmud is often so over the top that it’s just plain silly.

A bit harsh and hostile; but the facts are presented clearly enough for the most casual observer.
I’ll present a quick summary here – I’m an ex-Christian who was looking into taking Courses at Local Seminaries; and ended up taking a few classes at a Jewish University on Judaism.
I ended up coming across these “Christian Debunking” Sites while contemplating how there were no “Original” Gospel Manuscripts – all referenced an “Imaginary” Core/Source Manuscript no one ever encountered.
Then I also looked for any Secular Records and the Actual Historical Timeline ov Events:
4thCE Cult started under the Sponsorship Constantine at Nicea. An Amalgamation of the previously failed+disdained “Chrestus-Cult” (“Chrestus” meaning Good/Useful) who supported Constantine, the Dionysus Cult, Mythras Cult, and others – formulated to be “Constantine’s Rendition” of the Jewish Messiah/God-Son as they also tried to Hijack Judaism (for their comprehensive Creation to Future Events Coverage).
First Gospels were part of “First New Testament” which were part of the “First Christian Bible” – as completed Published Works, Sponsored by Constantine, all after Nicea.
Later in the 6thCE after Rome fell with Constantine’s Christians splitting the Empire after the West fell into the Dark Ages, a Christian Monk established “1AD” – 5 Centuries into the past – as the “Time of (Non)Occurence” for the now known to be fabricated Gospels.
That’s why there are no written records of Gospel Characters/Events in the 1stCE. The Catholics were running a 50+year hoax with their claims of holding the First Gospels through the Dead Sea Scrolls – which didn’t.

DEC25th is the Solstice of the Julian Calendar – observed in Europe as late as 1598CE. Solstice was the Birth/Death/Resurrection/Light Celebrations held by Dionysus, Mythras, and Others.
The Christian Gregorian Calendar separated the Solstice from DEC25th, making DEC25TH a solely “Christian” Holiday which incorporated elements and Temple buildings(including those of the VATican) of Mythras and Dionysus.

I don’t get it. What’s in it for Thomas Dalton. And why does he think that mocking them will “disabuse” them of their beliefs?

It is hard to cope with deliberate trolling by Mr. Dalton.
It is a curious thing that Moses supposedly gave all these secret insights and instructions on the worship of Moloch—-right as he was bringing down stone tablets that said ‘don’t worship any god but God’ and that when he found the Israelites worshipping the Golden Calf (which they had made from the gold they had taken from Egypt) that he ground it up, poured it in the water, and made the Israelites drink the water. Furthermore, it is a curious thing that God suggested to Moses that He would destroy the Israelites, save only Moses, and make a new nation come from Moses to fulfill all that He had promised, so great was God’s wrath.
The Old Testament testifies against the Israelites very strongly.
In this day, atheists and Christ haters, and evolutionists, and global warming nuts, and transgenderites, and hate Whitey types have been reduced to being pitiful clowns. The road forward is stunningly obvious, and yet, those who worship the Shadow do not choose to walk into the Light. The Dalton article was a nothingburger and I don’t see the need to write a feature-length article to refute it but OK. The comments were a steaming garbage heap of “No Jesus looked like me” or “Jesus trolled the Jews!” both of which are so dumb I already regret replying to them.
I appreciate the refutation of Dalton’s conflation of the Talmud and the OT. Your detail of why the Talmud is far opposed to the OT is certainly a necessary to prevent misguided attacks on the Christian far right and to promote the truth. I categorize Mr. Dalton’s thoughts alongside Robert Green of Know More News; attacks from a pagan pro-Nazi school of thought which seeks the secular rise of anti-semitism, brushing aside that paganism has no, or insignificant, continuous line of practice throughout the centuries, and that Christendom historically was wary of, and effective at countering, negative semetic influence.
Additionally to this refutation, due to it’s focused scope, I do hope that another author can refute Dr. Dalton’s claims that Paul & his acolytes invented Christianity, and his claims against the historicity of Christ and the gospels, and the many other anti-Christian claims. While I share your enthusiasm for the scholarly approach of Dr. Hoffman, I am more in tune with Douglas Reed when it comes to assessing the Torah. Reed speaks about the Torah as being two books. The spiritual Torah that holds many gems and the political Torah whose stories and warmongering defy sane logic.
After reading Dr. Dalton’s article I wished that Dr. Hoffman would rebut. And what a pity that there is no wagering on who’s going to be the winner, for it would have been as easy as choosing to bet on Mike Tyson against Woody Allen in a boxing match. We might be in partial disagreement with Dr. Hoffman, but his scholarly substance makes of a pretender like Dr. Dalton something akin to an amateurish clown.

Jesus in the NT was trolling the Jews. There was little other motive for nailing him to a cross. Jews were not in the habit of killing each other over speculative theological arguments. He cast out demons in rabbis and raised a couple of dead people then interrupted their international money laundering operation.
As a character in the text Jesus is seen humorously and deftly dismantling the tribe and their machinations. Who cares if he existed or not. It was a very accurate description of this very power and demonic group. Then he runs smack into the contemporary equivalent of the ADL. We’ve seen various unjewish people in own own time getting crucified by Jews in similar ways to the outspoken Jesus.
If the Ten Commandments are not followed by Christians or Jews, all that is said on the subject is a waste of time. Religion cannot be turned into a business at convenience or it becomes a joke.
Simple: given that Jews are so awful and that Jews say Hitler was the devil then Hitler must have been a good guy. It’s fallacious logic but it’s how a lot of people think. I think that, on balance, it’s likely Jesus existed. That is, I accept that he was a preacher and purported miracle-worker from the sticks who led a bunch of his supporters to Jerusalem where he misbehaved at the Temple, and so on. I even believe that it’s perfectly possible that the Gospels contain truth about his beliefs and teachings (though how to sort out the true from the false I don’t know).
But I’m damned if I believe the nonsense about his conception and birth. Nowhere in the OT does Jehovah/Yaweh shag women and make them pregnant. Zeus, on the other hand, is just the boy for that sort of thing. Evidently the conception yarn is a Gentile/Greek intrusion into a story about a Jewish milieu.
The nativity yarns are equally bogus. The one on Matthew contradicts the one in Luke and vice versa. They are fakes: their purpose is to claim that a baby from Nazareth was actually born in Bethlehem in satisfaction of a prediction in the OT. Phooey! Jesus became a public figure only when John baptised him. Almost anything said about his birth or childhood is likely to have been fabricated long afterwards when anyone who’d known him as a child was safely dead and so couldn’t contradict the stories. (Jesus is not the only Middle Eastern prophet of whom this could be said, eh?)
I don’t think the Resurrection is inauthentic. That is, I accept that the story is consistent with beliefs of the time and place. I don’t believe it happened, though, because – unlike people of that era – I don’t believe in the supernatural.
In other words, it’s authentic but untrue whereas the conception and nativity stories are inauthentic and untrue. It’s the difference between the reporters of the Resurrection only being mistaken while the reporters of the nativity and conception are liars.
I find it noteworthy that the Arch of Constantine, which still stands in Rome, raised to commemorate his victory over rival usurper Maxentius, does not feature a single Christian image or inscription. It is instead festooned with the traditional Roman deities and personifications. Constantine also struck hundreds of millions of coins in the years immediately following his triumph featuring the figure of the sun god and an inscription from the popular military cult of Sol Invictus, reading “to Sol our unconquerable ally.”
And Jesus was not a great moral teacher. His system is based on unquestioning obedience to arbitrary pronunciations and is in fact no more than self interest, doing this in order to obtain rewards and to avoid punishments. Jesus fails to state the one thing that every true spiritual teacher knows, that the only reason for doing the right thing is that it is the right thing to do. No one needs god or religion to be moral. If you can’t distinguish right from wrong, what you lack is empathy, and faith won’t help you.

Thank you for a honest article to answer the distorsions of Mr. Dalton. The fact that Rabbinic Judaism is not the same religion as the ancient Israelite religion we find in the Bible is obvious but it is unknown by most modern people. When modern people see Jews, they imagine that they are similar to the apostles before being converted by Jesus. This is ludicrous.
The ancient Israelite religion was focused on the Temple, which was the means by which the sins of Israel were forgiven through the sacrifice of animals (especially, lambs). The sacrifice of animals (in the Tabernacle and later in the Temple) had been mandated by a covenant Moses did with God. If you don’t have a Temple, many laws of the Old Testament/Tanak (call it the way you want) cannot be applied. So when the Romans destroyed the Temple in AD 70, the ancient Israelite religion we find in the Bible could not be practiced anymore.
What to do? The followers of Jesus had no problem. The sacrifice of Jesus had replaced the sacrifices of the Temple as a way of forgiving sins some decades before. This was a New Covenant that replaced the Old Covenant of Moses: “For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”. This is why Jesus is called the Lamb of God. The book of Hebrews explains this in detail: the sacrifice of Jesus is the sacrifice that ends all sacrifices. This is why Jesus equates his body with the Temple and so on and so forth. This is the origin of Christianity.
But about the Jews that did not follow Jesus? Karen Amstrong explains in «The Case for God»:
The Israelites that didn’t want to become Christians simply invented another religion. A religion not centered on the Temple (which was gone) but centered on studying the oral traditions of the Pharisees (different from the Bible) and deriving laws from them. The traditions Jesus condemns in several places of the Gospel.
They wrote the traditions on the Talmud in the first centuries of the Christian era and then spent the following centuries, deriving laws from the interpretation of the Talmud, and then using these interpretations to derive new laws, and then using these new interpretations to derive new laws, and so on and so forth. This is the origin of Judaism.
As with Christians, the Old Testament is read because of devout reasons (the poetry of the Psalms is magnificent for devout people), but it is not followed as a law you have to adhere to. You cannot follow the Old Testament because you don’t have a Temple. Christians replaced the Old Testament with the teachings of Jesus. Jews replaced it with the Oral Law of the Pharisees (Talmud) and all the interpretations derived from it.
So you have a father religion: ancient Israelite religion, focused on the Temple and whose sacred book is the Old Testament/Tanak. This was the religion in times of Jesus. This father religion has two children religions: Christianity and Judaism. Christianity is focused on Jesus and has the New Testament as a sacred book. Judaism is focused on the interpretation of the Talmud and has the Talmud as the sacred book.
And the main characters are Jews, the supporting cast are Jews, the producer is a Jew…

I think Hoffman has done a lot of interesting work, appreciate his courage, and used to subscribe to his newsletter. But this essay is really poorly written and verges on gibberish. Frankly I am much more convinced by Dalton’s piece — and not just because it’s clearly and elegantly composed.
It’s true that Jesus was trolling the smug uniparty elite Jews – the Pharisees and Sadducees and this was indeed the motive for nailing him to the cross (and it’s also true this foreshadowed the treatment of others in similar circumstances). However, Jesus was himself Jewish, and it’s hard to see how Jewish influence would have spread to Western Europe without Christianity.
It isn’t true, though, that Jews never killed each other over theological arguments prior to this. The Old Testament is full of examples of battles between Judah and Israel, and were even in the habit of calling each other children of the devil, etc. just as Jesus and his opponents called each other. Here is one example, where Abijah, King of Judah, makes war upon Jeroboam, King of Israel (both Jews):
“4 And Abijah stood up upon mount Zemaraim, which is in mount Ephraim, and said, Hear me, thou Jeroboam, and all Israel;
5 Ought ye not to know that the Lord God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?

While this comment is well-researched and argued, and I think mostly correct, I believe it has some holes that make it a neater theory to Christians but not entirely true.
Even before Christ the Jews existed as a people without a temple for periods of time, for example there was almost a century that passed between the first and second temples.
This is a neat theory but simply untrue. Many Christian sects do study the Old Testament extensively. I grew up in a fundamentalist Presbyterian environment and we generally studied the Old Testament more often than the New. It is after all longer. I have a theory that Calvinism with its love of the Old Testament was most popular in small-but-strong countries like the Netherlands and Scotland who could easily imagine themselves to be God’s chosen people. I think but am not sure (I have never attended Mass) Catholicism tends to put more emphasis on the New Testament compared to Protestant forms of Christianity.
Furthermore, most modern synagogues have Torah scrolls occupying pride of place. This is beyond dispute. The book of Exodus is especially relevant to Jews as a diaspora people, and the feast of Passover which is an important yearly festival for Jewish families encourages modern Jews to remember the story of this Old Testament book. You are very wrong about the motives of Jesus. One should love righteousness because of what it is and hate evil because of what it is. Actually I’m reading through Exodus now at home and it appears the Jews had more money than the native Egyptians and found clever ways to sidestep efforts to suppress their activities. In a curious role reversal it was the Romans like Pilate who were in the position to stand behind the curtain – the Jews were the mob and the official rulers of Roman Judea. Pilate was able to get rid of another potential rabble-rouser (Jesus) without taking any blame – classic “behind the curtain” tactics.

M. Hoffman writes a good rebuttal, but reference to ‘Hebrew Bible’ is not a good idea. There is no ‘ebrew bible. The ‘ebrew Talakh was composed in response to the Septuagint (by command of Greek rulers spun-off from Alexandros in third century BC). Many Jews are eternal whiners. People in that part of the Grecian world actually found the tales entertaiting, so preserved them.
In fourth or so century A.D. (700 years later), a Hebrew version was composed, has many changes, mainly to contradict points used by Christians from the Septuagint, so I really have no idea of what he means by Hebrew bible (‘ebrew Torah and Tanakh, I suppose).

The arch of Constantine (like its predecessors), is a military rather than a religious monument. Constantine also commanded the building of the original St. Peter’s Church, a monumental and expensive project that involved the grading and flattening of Vatican Hill and the covering of a cemetery used by the Roman elite (the tombs were unroofed so they would not be crushed by the soil used to flatten the area). The whole project was, of course, for a Christian purpose. It is a common misconception that Constantine made Christianity the official religion of the empire. It was the later emperor Theodosius I who did so. Constantine merely ended the spasmodic persecution of Christians indulged in by his predecessors and extended them toleration. The fact that his mother Helena was a Christian likely aided that decision. Constantine was well aware that powerful segments of the Roman elite and the Roman army were pagans. He wished to win support from Christians without alienating his pagan subjects, so he continued to support both Christianity and paganism publicly with monuments and coinage.

I try to follow what’s going on in Ukraine, but by no means do I believe what the media reports is accurate. Yes, I’m an American, and believe me, our media is corrupt beyond belief. But go ahead and publicly criticize Jews or Muslims and wait for the hell fire to come down upon you. No one seems to suffer for insulting or undermining Christianity. The ‘oral law’ (‘secret knowledge’), alleged to have been passed by Moses to the Hebrew elite, concurrent with his delivery of the ‘written law’ (Ten Commandments) to the masses, has taken many forms. Yes, it was the foundation of the Mishnah (Talmud or Torah sheBeal peh), written hundreds of years after Christ’s death, but, long before that, it was the basis of Deuteronomy, written by Ezra and his gang of returning Babylonian exiles (a self-appointed elite), and used to subdue the am ha’aretz (commoner) Hebrews who had not been exiled, and to whom the exiles returned.
Deuteronomy was continually modified by this elite to keep tightening the stranglehold on their people, but, since it existed in writing, it was eventually translated, along with the other four books written to accompany Deuteronomy (all five known as the Pentateuch or Torah she Bictav (yes, there are two Torah’s, the better to confuse the goyim)) into Greek by 70 of their own scholars (thus the alternate name of those books: Septuagint); since the translation placed the text into the public sphere, the elite lost control of the narrative, so, back underground it went, to become ‘oral law’ once again, and to serve as the basis for the tyrannical Pharisees’ doctrine, eventually to resurface (in writing again) as the Mishnah.
So, the Talmud and the OT are not as distinct as you think.

Jesus may have claimed to oppose an “oral tradition”, but does he actually address it? Instead he addresses the Torah itself. Jesus says the Torah is wrong about divorce, wrong about familial piety, wrong about dietary law, wrong about the sabbath, wrong about wealth, and most of all, wrong about Jerusalem belonging to the Jews.
IF you believe the Bible, the Jews [Judeans] have been around since ~600 BC, when they split from the northern kingdom of Israel. This is when the Jews supposedly discovered the Torah in an old broom closet (the Deuteronomic reform). Alternately, if you know the Bible is a crock of shit, you may suspect that the Jews have only been around since ~250 BC, when their book laying claim to Israel was published in Greek.
In other words, according to the Bible, there was an irreconcilable political split between Israel and Judea circa 600 BC. When people claim Jesus is not a Jew but an Israelite, they are half correct. In the gospels, Jesus criticizes the Jews from the point of view of Israel. He is therefore criticizing the Torah and not a secret law. Of course the Talmud is an outgrowth of the Torah. Racial supremacy is printed in the Torah in black and white. So is the deed to the promised land.
You obviously know that the Babylonian Talmud came centuries after Christ. That you still wish to associate it with Christ shows your intellectual vacuum, just like Dalton positing a historical Christ after explaining that there is no historical evidence for Christ. Weaksauce!

Saggy quoted the infamous line from Deuteronomy “Let nothing that breathes remain alive.” That from the God who is Love (1 John) but let’s get to the heart of the Law of Moses. So what are we to make of modern, secular Jewish claims that they value “tolerance?” The bedrock foundation of Judaism is intolerance.
Context is good. The Old Testament was likely written while the Jews were in captivity in Babylon. Their escape from bondage in Egypt was retconned to make a precedent for their return to Canaan. (Only the Supermind could have thought of this.) It seems strange to us moderns, but Mesopotamia in ancient times was divided into city-states that were theocratic. Each city was centered on the temple of a particular god. Babylon was devoted to Marduk, and Ur to Sin, and Eridu to Enki. Citizens of each city made sacrifices to their particular god, and sought his protection, without denying the existence of other gods. Old Testament monotheism was originally not a denial of multiple gods, but an insistence on worshiping only Yahweh. That explains the otherwise puzzling reference to “us” when Man is expelled from Eden:

You can argue the contradictions of Christianity, of faith vs. works, or if the command “do not resist an evil person” is really meant literally, and try to square the circle. (Mark 7:27) Do you really believe that when a Jew sins, a gentile has a chance to be saved in his place? (Romans 11:17) Christians aren’t saved; they’re on a waiting list.

As I see it, Dalton is a mixed bag. He writes excellent material when he keeps on the subjects of the Holocaust, the Austrian Corporal, and the Jewish Question. He is irenic, and he is informed. His books show that he has carefully thought through the issues and has attempted to interact on a scholarly level with his critics. For this he is to be commended.
I have profited from Dalton’s writings as well, and so it pains me to read his attacks on Christianity, Paul, and Jesus Himself. It pains me NOT because his arguments are so intellectually compelling, solid, and carefully thought through, but because they are not! It shows that he has a real ax to grind, that he has lost all objectivity on these matters and has entered the realm of pure emotion.
I’ve dealt with the sort of arguments that Dalton raises for the past 40 years from a host of anti-Christian polemicists. It’s been refuted on a scholarly level time after time by Christian scholars who actually know Greek and Hebrew, who under the historical background and culture of the ancient Israelites, the development of the Torah, the historical formation of both canons, manuscript transmission, and who understand well the arguments of their opponents. I’m convinced that Dalton doesn’t have any significant grasp of these subjects, and it shows in his writings. The average reader, however, doesn’t have a clue and can easily get fooled by Mr. Dalton.
The problem with Dalton is that he reads sources very selectively. His arguments are outdated higher critical polemics that have been debunked by serious biblical scholars. From all of his writings, I have not once read him interacting with serious conservative scholars such as Craig Blomberg, Gleason Archer, Gary Habermas, Daniel Wallace, Craig Evans, and others who have written extensively on the very subjects that he irresponsibly touches (e.g., Jesus’ existence, historical reliability of the New Testament, the reliability of textual transmission, “the Jesus myth,” etc.).
Dalton also tries to find ancient pagan parallels to Christianity, making more out of them than is warranted. He reads strange notions into Christian theology, especially the theory of pagan derivation which was masterfully refuted by Christian scholars such as James Machen, Ronald Nash, and Edwin Yamauchi in their respective works.
Again, Dalton does not interact or even show any knowledge of New Testament scholars who have published serious books debunking the very matters he argues in his anti-Christian screeds. This alone shows he is not well-rounded nor well-read in the matters he speaks so confidently about. He also at times reaches rash conclusions and he is dismissive of anyone who argues otherwise.
The average reader might think that Dalton’s position is rock solid, but that’s because they know little to nothing about the textual transmission of ancient New Testament manuscripts and their reliability. They have little understanding of Christian theology, including the history of the Christian Church, especially in how the canon of the Old Testament and the New Testament were formed. To simply appeal to Bart Ehrman as some do without themselves having a serious grasp of the textual issues and the history of manuscript transmission is less than adequate, especially if they have not bothered to carefully work through the rebuttals of Daniel Wallace, Craig Evans, D.A. Carson, Douglas Moo, and many others who have taken Ehrman to the proverbial woodshed.
These subjects, no doubt, are complex. I can’t give a one-line answer to all that Dalton raises in his article because there’s a lot of background information that needs to be explained. There are nuances to these matters that must be carefully handled, and a whole lot of misunderstandings and smokescreens from skeptics have to first be cleared up.

Well that was my original point. I don’t know about you, but I don’t speak or read Greek. I don’t think I’m ignorant for not learning Greek. I would bet hardly anyone knows the Bible has been translated first from Aramaic (?) then to Greek, and so on. Do you read Aramaic? Regardless of what the Bible says, we are being told by Christian leaders in America we have a duty to help and accept everyone. If there is someone preaching otherwise, I am unaware. The Catholic and Lutheran churches are transporting migrants all over the country. Israeli charities are dumping them all over Europe. I think Europe is in greater danger because it is smaller and Africans and Muslims are much more hostile. Christian leaders seem to be doing the same in Europe.
I do not deny or refute the actual, historical presence of Christ. I do not find the question to be of sufficient interest or utility to pursue it. This does not have relevance for me. It is near impossible to prove a negative.

Jesus followed Talmudic Law throughout the Gospel stories.
When he went to the wedding at Cana. The Pentateuch simply states that a man acquires or marries a woman. It doesn’t explain the ceremony the blessings or any other part of a marriage rite. All that is described in the Talmud.
Jesus taught in the synagogue on Sabbath. The Pentateuch states that the Sabbath is a day of rest. It does not say people should gather together in houses of worship. It does not describe the weekly Torah reading publicly recited in the synagogue. It doesn’t describe how the Sabbath meals are conducted or even if there should be a Sabbath meal. All of these things Jesus participated in as part of rabbinical Jewish culture.
Jesus wore fringes. The Pentateuch says to put fringes on the corners of your garment. It doesn’t say where exactly or how many to tie or what color they should be. All these things Jesus did in conformity with rabbinic teaching.

It in this sense that some wrongly argue that ‘Paul was the Founder of Christianity’ which is not how Paul himself viewed the matter. I believe this skeptical approach is false and fails to appreciate the historical transition from the ministry of Jesus to the ministry of Paul. Jesus is the foundation of the Church, Himself being the Chief cornerstone (1 Cor. 3:11; Eph. 2:20-21). Paul worked faithfully with the Corinthian church and laid the foundation of the church in their city. The picture is probably complicated. There are times when Christianity may have helped Whites, but overall I believe that Christianity has hurt more than it has helped. The negatives have overwhelmed the positives. THe alternatives were never tried. Roman philosophers were developing a Buddhist like religion called “Neoplatonism”. The Christians eventually burned many of their writings in a brazen orgy of petty triumphalism and intolerance. We will never know what would have been if other religions had been allowed to flourish in the West.
I think the question is, was Paul actually proselytizing? Was he really a traveling preacher? Did he really send these letters? After all, there is no trace of Christianity in the 1st century CE. If Paul converted anybody, who were they? Instead, the “letters” of Paul did not become known until they were published by Marcion in the 2nd century.
But let’s think about what Paul says in his letters. Not only does he explicitly claim to be the founder of Christianity, he also claims to give birth to Christ. He explains how he learned about Christ: by reading the Jewish Bible and receiving visions. Not by witnessing a preacher, miracle worker, or dissident.
This is one of the huge gaps between Paul and Mark that prove the two texts are not compatible. Paul had to tell everyone the news about Jesus Christ because they’ve never heard of him before! Paul openly stated that his religion depends on the UNSEEN and most people will regard it as foolishness. Paul rejects the wisdom of the Logos. He insists on the nonsensical.
Paul said, at most, 500 people witnessed Christ, and only after the resurrection. This is no way accords with Mark, who describes Jesus becoming as famous as a rock star. Jesus can’t enter into towns because of all the people who have heard of his miracles. Even in the country, at the lakeside, Jesus must preach from a boat because the shoreline is so packed with people. Mark describes Jesus as the most famous man in the Mediterranean. Yet Paul introduces people to Christ as if they’ve never heard of him.
This also proves that Paul came before Mark and that Paul is the authentic account of Christianity’s origin. After all, if Paul knew that Jesus was a famous person, or if Paul knew any of the biographical details contained in the Gospels, he could have mentioned them. Instead, Paul does not corroborate the gospels at all.
Richard Carrier has some great insight into the works of Paul. One thing he notes is that Paul believed in the heavenly spheres, meaning there were 7 layers of heaven surrounding the Earth. For example, at one point he describes a man who may have wandered off into the third heaven. It is important to note that in Paul’s tale of Christ, Christ may not have come all the way down to Earth. He came down from the highest heaven to a lower realm, where he allowed himself to be impaled on a stake by archons, knowing that he would rise again to the highest heaven. I think it is fair to say that Paul does NOT place Christ all the way down on Earth.
Paul’s letters appear to have had no impact until Mark changed them into something very different. This began the process of claimants to the “true” gospel that started with Marcion and ended with Luke authoring Acts for the sake of retroactive continuity between the gospels and Paul.
Best guess is that Titus discovered the “letters” of Paul in Jerusalem in 70 CE, after which they were reworked to prophesy the triumph of Titus.
The heart of Christianity is a contradiction in terms. That is why you must be very careful to heed Mark’s warning about how to understand a parable. Paul was a Jew, and his vision of Christ was the fulfillment of Jewish prophecies. Mark was pro Roman and turned Christ into an “anti Semite”.
In conclusion, I’m not sure that Paul was actually trying to proselytize. If he was, it is evident that he failed, perhaps for the very reasons you identify (he admits that it’s foolish and he made it up). Christianity did not have any political impact until the second century, when the first gospels were published. And these gospels are an effective denial of Paul’s epistles, despite being adapted from them.

The starting point of ethics for the Christian (including converted Jews) is no longer Moses nor even the Old Covenant, but Jesus and the imperatives found in the New Covenant. The Old Covenant has been done away with the arrival of Christ, and this is something Jews cannot accept. To do so would undermine the entire rabbinical establishment and tradition, and they know this all too well.
Moreover, the New Testament contains a variety of texts that explicitly condemns the Jewish religious establishment, and all of them are interpreted by Jews as “anti-Semitic.” Thus, they see Christianity at its core as vehemently opposed to them and their Talmudic religion. Just recently, Canadian Catholic schools were required to acknowledge LGBTQXYZ “behavior” as being valid “lifestyles” in contradiction of basic Catholic teachings. Government funding means government control.
A better solution is to eliminate property tax funding of ALL public schools. Parents can establish groups among themselves. Of course, there are those who argue that “public education” funded by property owners is necessary. All one has to do is observe the many urban public schools with not only dismal test scores, but atrociously low graduation rates. Flushing the money down the toilet would achieve identical results.
With today’s technology, “distance education” is not only feasible but a real solution…
