I cannot stand anything artificial and have been this way since I was a kid growing up in the 70’s / 80’s.
My mother and grandmothers did a lot of baking. And as a kid you always wanted to help out when it came time to make the frosting, you got to lick the spoon!
So I remember the vanilla extract being used and it had always just said “vanilla extract” on the bottle. At some point mom or grandma sent me to the cupboard to get the bottle of vanilla and noticing “artificial vanilla.” We had both types on hand and I opened both and dabbed a little on my finger and did a taste comparison.
It wasn’t even close! The artificial vanilla left an unpleasant after taste. It was the same but “different.” I remember asking mom or grandma, “why wouldn’t you use the real thing always?” And I heard something to the effect that the cost of artificial vanilla being cheaper, and more readily available.
I have always hated:
Artificial banana in anything as in candy, it always tastes fake!
Drinking from plastic cups / bottles.
Eating off of plastic plates / bowls / forks / spoons. Everything tastes better out of glass / ceramic cups / mugs/ bottles, especially milk!
Imitation leather.
Polyester or nylon fabrics. Although sometimes these fabrics are superior for a given application like winter / rain gear / durability. Cotton always feels better on the skin.
The over use of plastics in automotive interiors.
Dashboards / consoles used to be metal, door / kick panels used to be vinyl or cloth covered cardboard, artificial but more aesthetically pleasing.
Almost every company I’ve worked for has supplied only artificial powdered or fake non dairy coffee creamers. They’re nasty why bother!
All artificial sweeteners taste like shit! And are worse for the human body than sugar / corn syrup.
Cannot stand plastic lawn chairs / benches / furniture of any kind.
Particle board.
I could go on for days but I’ll leave it at that. It’s a long enough rant…
Plastics / polyesters/ nylon are a miracle and indispensable for a lot of things, I’m talking about the abusive overuse of these materials.

This is in reverse. America is a stock market with a military that it uses quite freely. Everything about the US is fake. It is the biggest indoctrination machine ever created, never mind the never-ending stories about how bad everyone else is or has been. It’s all lies, spin, disinformation, or LSD for short. Have you had your daily dose of LSD yet?
Sure, there’s been pockets of sanity and reason within the US but they’ve been shrinking. Who knows how long they can hold out.

A few years ago Krispy Kreme Donuts tried to break into the northeast market. I went to visit the new store and there I saw the big automated doughnut-making machine in operation, quite a spectacle, from batter to finished product. And at the end was a pretty girl who handed me a free sample! Talk about extreme delight from a minor pleasure, I recall this incident as one of life’s very modest but most memorable recent highlights. As for DD, their coffee tastes like dishwater and every one of their baked goods, from bagels to croissants, tastes the same as their donuts. A local Bawston variation of the company name involves the terms “Drunken” and “Dognuts” in various combinations.

An interesting book was published last year discussing the psychological harm of digital media, and how it (and other factors) contributed to widespread acceptance of the COVID exaggerations, extreme censorship, the phenomenon of “woke” intolerance, and other matters of current interest. The title is “The Psychology of Totalitarianism,” by Mattias Desmet, Chelsea Green Publishing, 2022. Written by an academic psychologist, it could have taken more notice of politics, economics, and history, but it does provide a needed frame of reference to the frightening drive for over-regulation coming from those who fearfully crave relief from the anxieties that are normal part and parcel of the human condition. The author makes the point that these quasi-moralistic modern Crusades are unwittingly marching our fragmenting society lockstep into a new kind of tyranny, masquerading as a socially engineered utopia. Among those contributing blurbs are Eric Clapton and RFK Jr. In our Orwellian age of universal deceit, it’s a refreshing read.

Your comment brings back memories…Around the time Krispie Kreme had their 15 minutes of fame, when all the morning talk show hosts and Oprah were stuffing their faces singing the praises of Krispie Kreme Donuts on air,
Krispie set up one of those operations you referred to in my area in Western N.Y. Some small stores, and the “Donut factory” you described. I worked third shift at a company just down the road and used to stop in every now and then and grab a dozen to bring home to the kiddies. It was a pretty cool place like you said, and had a sorta “mom and pop” vibe, although it was anything but.
And in maybe 5 – 7 years time, poof! Gone!
They were all the rage wherever I worked Krispie Kreme were in the break room daily, and special work occasions they were ubiquitous.

Doughnuts probably are much better at local joints compared to Dunkin’. However, chicken is something that really is high-quality across the spectrum of restaurants in America. There are a half dozen fast food/fast casual chains that at least have a good chicken sandwich, for example. In fact, many Americans are heavy in part because certain foods like chicken are so tasty these days.

I wouldn’t go that far. Most of the more recent trendy chicken chains are serving up fairly decent chicken tarted up with breading and sauces laced with the various borderline addictive and/or artificial additives that the author alludes to.

It’s a sad fact that the public is so conditioned to such poor quality fast food that anything better than reheated by-product ‘chicken fingers’ is seen as something to be highly prized.

In the new world tolerance will reach such levels that intelligent people will be banned from thinking so as not to offend the imbeciles.

Sometimes our dad had to actually go up on the roof of our apartment building to adjust the aerial which might have shifted in the wind. Occasionally grandpa described better days during his childhood when the garages in the alleys at the back of the houses were formerly horse stables and the toilet facilities were outhouses in the back yards. Having been born in 1890, I guess he was the counterpart to today’s Millennials, though strictly speaking he was no more than a Centennial–which he would have thought was just more bullshit. Things seem to never change, but they always do. The bullshit always endures.

In reality, most so-called doughnuts should be called cakenuts. They are made from cake batter and not from bread dough.

I can remember my mother baking bread once a week and often using some of the dough to create what we called doughnuts, although they were nothing more than chunks of flattened dough dropped into a pan of boiling oil, flipped once, then taken out and eaten as soon as they were cooled sufficiently. We would punch a hole in the end, shove in a spoonful of real butter, and munch down until the entire batch was gone…which didn’t take long.

Those days are also gone. More’s the pity.

The fact that they started being spelled “donuts” already shows a certain dumbing down.

Anyway, I don’t care much for donuts or doughnuts, I’m not a cop, but it seems to me that current Western people are like children. They like sweet stuff, unhealthy fast food, shiny stuff (smartphones) childish clothes etc.

So, is Krispy Kreme over? Never tried their product, but went for lunch with a friend at a restaurant near the first Krispy shop in Tokyo, on the weekend, and just after the latter opened.

At least several hundred, maybe even a thousand or more people, were in a queue outside Krispy Kreme. Stretched for far more than a hundred metres.

Must admit, though, old-fashioned doughnuts not being available here, I’ll eat a couple from Dunkin’ once or twice a year. Also, the coffee is bad as an O.P. said, but the endless refills can be handy for a cheap place to sit and think about what to do next when travelling.

It is funny that this article came out today because just yesterday, after a long discussion I had about life and growing up with my nephew, comparing school and after school activities (we grew up in the same part of the city) I sat down and had a significant epiphany of what was otherwise something that I more or less knew but had never boiled down to its essence.

Namely, that if I had grown up in my formative years with PC’s, computer games and I-phones, I would have been fully and totally robbed of my childhood, the most fondly recalled years of my life.

How much would have been lost without the adventures on bikes in the nooks and crannies of the city, scraped knees, burnt fingers, war games with ‘sides’ devised only by us, sports, later hunting adventures with your favorite dog, getting your first car to drive (and fix) legally at age 16, stuttering on the phone from nervousness when phoning that girl you liked from class for a movie date etc….

I makes me better understand the de-humanized elements that I see in youth today. They never stood a chance (nor would I have) and it is a global, not just an American phenomenon.

It reminds me of the now near futile admonition, “you were born an original, don’t die as a copy”.

Krispy Kreme is still operating parts of NC. But it is very different in a tragic way.

A large store in High Point used to stay open 24/7. My family had a tradition of going when it snowed. We would pile in the 4 wheel drive and go slowly on the deserted back roads because people in the South mostly stay home if there is a scant amount of snow on the ground. The snow falling, darkness all around, the smell of doughnuts in the jeep after we ate some at the quiet store. Magical.

Or, you could go at 3AM, get a dozen glazed and a cup of coffee just because the notion struck you. It was a fun, inexpensive adventure.

Now, KK has to close at 8PM or 9PM. Why? Because the homeless started using it as a shelter. You had to muscle past crazed, dirty stinking people wearing 10 coats to get your glazed. They profaned the bathrooms and begged and loomed if you told them NO. None of them are 24 hours anymore.

Staffed by sullen rude stupid blacks and Mexicans who can barely manage an order if you throw them a curveball and get a chocolate covered creme filled.

The doughnuts are now trucked in and only run through the machine to be glazed. I have no idea why this is more economical, but I wondered if the people working there are too dumb to prepare doughnuts.

In the past, the KK “red light” on meant the doughnuts had just been made. Doughnuts that would melt in your mouth and had a hint, just a whisper, of lemon, vanilla and sugar. Now it means – the doughnuts brought off the truck, have been ran through the glaze machine. They do not taste the same, and one dozen doughnuts, with tax , is over $14 dollars.

When we were in the best of times in America, we did not know it.

The amazing American innovation of giant fast food corporations has corrupted many other forms of food, of course.

It has also corrupted the bodies and minds of its diners as well. My 29 year old neighbour just suffered a heart attack. 29 years old ? How can that be ? It can be because he is a lazy fat fuck who finds it easier to cruise through a drive through at the fast “food” restaurant. Breakfast, lunch and dinner with sugary snacks in between !

Not only that, but whatever they put in the food also seems to twist his behaviour patterns ! His loving wife is no better, with a huge belly that flops from side to side when she walks. About the same age, she now needs knee surgery to both legs. That’s because the human leg was never designed to support 250 pounds 24/7. She does not understand the concept !

They are not unique. It seems the youth are afflicted by all sorts of disease and conditions that strike out of nowhere, some with unpronounceable labels.

That’s America for you and the rot is enhanced by kids who are on the phone and playing video games all day. It is so bad that most 18 year olds inducted into the military are unfit for service. If you can lift a french fry to your mouth you are sworn in. One recruiter told me that the military is so desperate for people they offer all sorts of financial incentives. Recruits who try to back out after they have signed up are threatened with all sorts of mayhem.

Yesterday I made a pot of vegetable soup with onions, garlic, parsley, bok choy greens, sweet potatoes, carrots and zucchini. My visiting nephew (always sick with a cold, sore throat, fever or stuffy nose) laughed at the “concoction” and ordered a tripe burger, fries, onion rings and a large soda all delivered by some African. He finished the whole fucking “meal” before I was halfway through my soup bowl. He offered a piece of the burger to the dog, who sniffed it and walked away. It looks like even animals know shit food when they smell it and instinctively avoid such crap. Not us though, because we are the most intelligent species on earth. We eat anything !

The fast food industry are not the only ones who love this. Doctors, dentists and therapists cannot keep up. Big Pharma is on a roll. Few seem to make the connection between diet and health and the Advertisement Industry like it that way.

That;s where we are and its only getting worse.

Depending on how you pin the date, by about 1890 or 1900 America moved into a world of perpetual labor surplus because of the move to assembly line production. Better technology has only made that worse through time. The reality meant that America would be in perpetual recession/depression unless it convinced consumers to buy products that (1) were poorly made; (2) were not needed; and (3) cost more money than they had (to force credit card debt). That “need” gave birth to American advertising and hype. Good examples of such things are children’s toys, anything by Disney, and women’s fashion.

There was also a wealth component to this. Before the Great Depression the US suffered from massive wealth inequality. That meant that those at the top of the pile were able to hire lots of “help” to do things like cook very good food, clean their homes, and take care of their clothes. After the Depression, all were much more equal and the push for business was to develop “convenience” to replace domestic help.

Today massive wealth inequality as returned, but business still has the same burden to convince underpaid baristas and fast food workers to over consume.

Bad goods and bad food are the product of American capitalism. The system would collapse without them.

I just built a folding picnic table using real lumber. Light-years better than any of the mostly recycled plastic crap on offer at my local garden centre, and actually not much more expensive after all was said and done. Real glass and ceramic along with stainless steel cutlery will adorn it as we dine on home-grown veggies. Don’t have the time to herd cattle, so the steaks will be bought from a neighbour who does and butchers them himself.

He’s heard myself and others talk of how things were when I was growing up, and a young adult in the 70’s – 80’s and although the train was already headed off the rails, it was good enough that we did not notice. Stories much like yours, and now he looks around and says… WTF happened? He’s 22…

These problems are very recent. Humans adapted over 200.000 years to a completely different world, and there’s a theory that health and happiness come from recreating the past in the present.

That’s to say:

– An hour or so fairly strenous physical exercise most days (best walking).
– Eat fruit after excercise.
– Sugar free. One community meal in the late afternoon. Meat and vegetables.
– Long term close social bonds/trust with about máximum 25 people.
– Separate social roles for males and females. Both equally respected and valuable.
– The most capable group leadership with continual accountability (face to face).

Difficult in the modern world it would probably work.

I beg to disagree… I grew up in the 70’s – 80’s. It is like two entirely different worlds compared to now… The guy who remarked how good the 40’s – 60’s were probably, thought it was considerably worse in my era, i wouldn’t disagree, these things are relative. However during all those era’s we had relative freedom, and wokeness, busy body Karen’s, and corporate, govt totalitarianism was virtually non existent. There have always been female “busy bodies “Karen’s” but they were generally mocked, ridiculed, laughed at and ignored. They had no social power.
When the first caveman discovered fire, some hairy bitch probably ran out of the cave and said “put that out!”
The prohibition era was a “glitch.” And didn’t last long.
We are in the midst of Orwell’s totalitarian nightmare, or Huxley’s Brave New World, however you wish to see it.
All of this madness is driven by white women, and weak white men, with “small hats” egging them on!

Many small town museums contain binders full of personal correspondences from a hundred years ago written by both blacks and whites. Spend a few hours reading through them and it becomes crystal clear how corrosive, false, and dishonest history is as presented by Hollywood.

I grew up in a northern Ohio town of about 5,000 in the 50’s and 60’s and we kids could ride our bikes everywhere and we played all over our neighborhoods sometimes until 9pm playing Ghost in the Graveyard or Kick the Can or Capture the Flag.

No fences between houses meant we could run through neighbors back yards and hide as folks were sitting outside eating and drinking and (gasp!) talking!

In the summer we rode our bikes out to the pool and dropped them at the bike rack with no locks.

I am in Los Angeles now and my grandkids will NEVER know a life like I had as a child. No TV all day except for Mickey Mouse Club after school. The TV was just another piece of furniture to walk by.

Even in “small towns” now I don’t think it would be safe to let small children walk to school or play.

Sad.

That’s how I remember it. We were lucky! I worry like you about what will be left for our children and grandchildren.
How to fix it? I can’t say, likely we have the same idea on what needs to be done.

There is no reason to assume that a donut from a local shop is any less artificial than one from Dunkins.

Old fashioneds, glazed classics and maple bars are pretty basic.

If you eat a donut with dayglo sprinkles then it will be packed with artificial dyes. Your local shop or grocer is not going to splurge on all natural colors. There is probably no natural replacement for neon green or orange sprinkles.

As for Krispy Kreme I have had it numerous times and I honestly don’t get it. White people will line up for the plain ones as they come out fresh. It’s the strangest phenomenon. I really don’t think they are any better than Kroger. As far as I can tell KK exists to serve fat people at night in the drive thru. Starbucks also makes a lot of money from selling giant drinks to sugar addicts at all hours.

I briefly worked in the bakery debt of a small family owned grocery store “Market on the Square,” making donuts, who took their donuts as a point of pride. And as a competitive edge against larger grocery store chains locally.
In the same bakery other employees made breads, rolls etc…
All the donuts were made from bags of dry pre mixes. Sometime you had to combine premixes, depending on the variety of donut. The breads, etc, same, a few select types of specialty products came in frozen, because they could not buy a premix for it, or it was prohibitively expensive.
The premixed bags saved time, the ingredients were no different than if grandma mixed flour, leavening, sugar etc by hand at home.
There were no preservatives, because everything was baked fresh, that day, and any unsold product was tossed in the dumpster that night.
Most chains, some who started out mixing dry ingredients in house, as in Dunkin’s “time to make the donuts,” days have shifted to shipping in frozen, with preservatives, drop in the fryer and go. The regional Tim Hortons franchise, out of Toronto Canada, founded by former Toronto Maple Leafs / Buffalo Sabre’s hockey player Tim Horton, made its reputation on in house, old school, mom and pop donuts. With photos posted in his stores / advertising of him personally making donuts. They are insanely successful in Canada and parts of the north east, now more for their coffee, I know some people who work there, they have been shipped in frozen, for a few years now.

The author is correct that artificiality has been steadily increasing, but incorrect as to the cause. The increase is part and parcel of the growth of technology and its taking over more and more of our lives, not a plot by evil corporations to foist it on an unsuspecting public. In fact, a little examination will show that the whole idea of technology is to replace the natural with the artificial. Consider the construction of a dam. Why do we do it? Isn’t it because we see the benefits? If periodic flooding (the natural result of not having a dam) were acceptable, there’d be no need to build it. Also, with a reservoir, there will be more water available during the summer when water would otherwise naturally be in short supply. That this same dam will disrupt local riparian ecology and destroy a certain amount of forest is thought to be an acceptable trade-off. All technological “progress” follows this same example. Piece by piece Nature is being replaced with the artificial. We can even anticipate that it eventually will be necessary to replace man himself with an artificial construction, one better able to appreciate and thrive in such an artificial world.

It seems to me that Smuskiewicz isn’t upset with technology in general so much as with the elaboration of “progress”.
