I first noticed it 10 years ago while watching a BBC adaptation of Graham Greene’s famous 1938 gangster novel Brighton Rock. Considered a very violent book for its time, it was famously filmed in 1948 as a classic piece of British noir starring a young Richard Attenborough as Pinkie, the hoodlum with the sharp suits and penchant for throwing acid in his rivals’ faces.

But in the BBC adaptation there was something wrong. Pinkie’s gang, Dallow, Spicer and Cubitt, were depicted in the novel as runtish and impulsively violent criminals, but there was one thing about them that was clear from the prose; they were all White. In this version, however, Dallow was Black. The notion that an English south coast gangster just before World War II would be anything other than White is absurd, and I assumed this was just the usual BBC tokenism. However, over the next decade it would become increasingly common for producers to cast Black actors in what were obviously White parts. Today it seems almost mandatory.

Going forward a decade we find another BBC drama which tells the story of Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry VIII’s famed six spouses, and executed for her troubles in 1536. The actress playing Anne was Black. While the fictional Dallow in Brighton Rock being Black can be dismissed as a by-product of BBC moral rectitude, casting a woman who history and portraiture tell us was a White Englishwoman is operating in different territory. Anne Boleyn was born in Norfolk in England circa 1501. Her father was a knight who had attended the burial of Henry VII. Again, the idea she could have been Black makes no historical sense whatsoever. But that is not the point.

Interviews with the acting profession are rarely of any interest intellectually, but Jodie Turner-Smith, the Black actress who portrayed Anne Boleyn, caught my attention in an interview with the New York Times: “As a Black woman, I can understand being marginalized. I have a lived experience of what limitation and marginalization feel like.”

The idea that “lived experience” can be transplanted from one era to another, one race to another, one class to another, one ideology to another, and carry all its accidental attributes with it whole, is absurd enough in itself. But I would imagine Turner-Smith does know the experience of limitation and marginalization. Her culture limits itself, and its marginalization is entirely self-willed and driven by a visceral racism towards the more successful White races. This is one of the reasons that boosting Black culture to match their achievements on the basketball court gives White progressives such a perverse pleasure. They are helping failure, like wiping the spittle from the chin of someone slightly retarded trying to eat dinner.

The colouring-in of British history via the delivery system of televised drama serves two purposes for the progressive British deep state, and it does this by targeting two age groups. For those of us well into middle age, like myself, it reminds us who are the new masters, and it discomforts and irritates us because we know that what we are seeing is, in the context of history, fake news. All of this is a bonus for folk such as the BBC, who are often charged by the Right with hating the British while in reality they despise only the English. Also, for the younger generation, who know no history because they are being taught other ‘subjects’, it creates a whole new past, one which never existed outside of BBC storyboards but which explains to the youngsters that Britain was always Black, whether portrayed as history or as fiction.

This year’s film Mr. Malcolm’s List is a work of fiction, but nevertheless has as its premise that London around the turn of the nineteenth century contained Black people just as it does now. Billed as a “Regency Rom-com”, the movie features a Black lead role, that of an aristocrat. It is also billed as a “period comedy”. In what sense could it be? Period pieces are not about stately homes and perfumed wigs and whether everyone is smoking cigarettes or not (the standard British televisual way of explaining to the watcher that they are watching something set last century), they are about the authenticity of who was actually there, and what colour they were.

The casting of Black actors in what are obviously roles designed for White people has built into it two fail-safe systems. Firstly, it is revisionist history delivered via a medium guaranteed to be useful to the political class, wherever they might reign; entertainment. Legend has it that the reason Stalin didn’t have Shostakovitch shot the same as he did other musicians was because Dmitri could write film music, and Stalin recognized the power of movies as delivery systems for ideology.

Secondly, if a largely White audience decides to switch off the new wave of blaxploitation movies, it is not due to the quality of the product, but to White racism, which we are told exists the way gravity exists. It has enraged the Left that Top Gun: Maverick has been such a box-office success while Hollywood’s woke scripts have turned into loss-leaders for the industry.

The casting of Black actors to play what are clearly White characters leads inexorably to the introduction of judgmental racial themes, meaning the inherent goodness and victimhood of Blacks at the hands of oppressive and privileged Whites. The Railway Children is a film which the British, and English in particular, took to their hearts in the same way as, say, the Americans did with It’s a Wonderful Life. It’s a film which is English in essence, evocative of a certain period and a certain moral climate. The sequel, The Railway Children Return, made this year over half a century after the original, has a very different tale to impart from the first film’s tale of small villages, long summers, simple families and happy White children who avert a train disaster.

The sequel revolves around the arrival in a village of a Black soldier. Race was entirely absent from the original, but even the Left-wing Guardian was of the opinion that the film’s “BLM messaging… was jarring”. The British never watched The Railway Children and saw it as a film about Whiteness, but you can bet your shirt on the fact that the majority of films made in the foreseeable future will be about Blackness, particularly if they are remakes or sequels of movies deemed to be quintessentially White.

Britain’s other avowedly Left-wing newspaper, The Independent, notes that the sequel is shot in the same villages as the 1970 original, and ‘all that’s really changed is a slight shift in perspective to adapt to the modern social consciousness’. This is coding, of course, like most Leftist MSM journalism. What they mean is there are race-baiting sub-texts running through this film and there had better be. Whereas the first film revolved around the children’s father having been wrongly accused of espionage, the sequel has the children protecting a wounded Black soldier (which The Independent writes as ‘Black’ (but not White), the grammatically incorrect capitalization adopted in line with Associated Press protocols and noted above) and the headline to the review is:

‘A belated sequel that doesn’t have anything meaningful to say about racism’.

Why should it? We note again the irritated expectation of the Left that everything be reduced to the two skimpy dimensions of the race argument. But the “re-imagining” of British history via the medium of entertainment goes on.

Earlier this year, London saw a West End revival of the popular musical My Fair Lady. Based on George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion, which premiered in 1913 and was itself based on the Greek myth of Pygmalion and Galatea, the story of My Fair Lady is that of a cockney flower girl in London’s East End just before World War I. A professor of linguistics, Henry Higgins, is appalled by her rough accent and bets a colleague he can make her speak like a duchess. It was filmed in 1964 starring Rex Harrison as Professor Higgins and Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle. It is a charming fantasy, and the film features songs well known to any British audience of a certain age.

The most recent theatrical production in London casts a Black actress as Eliza. Again, this is unfeasible. A Black cockney match-seller in the east end of London in 1912 is as likely as a Tibetan hot-dog vendor outside an American ball-game in the same year, probably less so. The only Blacks in London at that time would have been transitory sailors. But, again, the point is not historical verisimilitude but propaganda. The semiotics of casting Black actors in White parts from different eras of history is intended to convey the message that Britain, and particularly its major cities, has always had a large Black population, and a virtuous one at that. This is what the viewer is being told and not just expected but commanded to believe. In passing, I note that most of actress Amara Okereke’s roles are traditionally White. Not her fault. She is a pawn. And a Black pawn, meaning she moves second, after White ideologues have moved first. And, in the end, it is Whites in charge of this cultural revisionism.

The point is not that the BBC, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Channel 4 and all the other cultural commissars patrolling the grounds are trying to convince a guppy-mouthed British audience that history was largely populated by Black people. It wasn’t, and the older fish know that. What these people are telling you is that you had better start seeing it that way, because soon there will be examinations after class, and if you don’t make the grade things may change for you, just like they did for Anne Boleyn at the precise moment the axe went through her neck. The beauty of a Black Anne Boleyn, of course, is that the execution can be an imprimatur of racism. And racism is cause for, if not monetary, then certainly societal reparations, as Black people are shuffled into positions from the public sector to the entertainment industry to politics as a kind of bewildered meritocracy, one which will gradually pick off the culturally important posts, roles and offices of a rapidly declining United Kingdom.

Two of British entertainment’s most iconic fictional screen characters are Dr. Who and James Bond, the eccentric time-lord forever battling the Daleks and the suave spy with a shaken Martini and a licence to kill. It was inevitable, then, that cries for the roles going to Black actors would become increasingly shrill. The producers of Dr. Who had already tried a woman—to disastrous ratings, and the idea of ‘Jane Bond’ has been mooted on many occasions. But earlier this year Dr. Who got its first Black lead, Ncuti Gatwa, and the 14th Doctor will also be portrayed as a homosexual to bolster the show’s woke points tally.

The Blackening of British history via its dramatic representation only boosts one ethnicity, of course. You would never see on screen a Chinese Anne Boleyn, a Sikh Dallow, or a Maori aristocrat in Regency London. Just as Blacks are absurdly over-represented in British screen advertising — Blacks are only 3% of the British population but are inescapable in ads — so too it is vanishingly rare to see any other ethnicities. But that is not to say that the re-writing of history is taking place exclusively in Black terms. This revisionism does not stop with race.

I, Joan, a production of the story of Joan of Arc at London’s famous Globe Theatre (actually not Shakespeare’s original, but the third version, although any visitor to London should visit it anyway) has Joan as ‘non-binary’, and answering to pronouns of ‘they and them’. I trust the French inquisitors who burnt Joan didn’t midgender her. But, again, that isn’t the point, as the Globe Theatre’s website explains that the production is ‘alive, queer and full of hope’.

This racial revisionism currently dictating the make-up of British casting is a befuddled kind of re-wilding. White liberals have always been rabid Rousseauists, believing that Black people represent some sort of primal force the White man lacks, being pre-occupied as he has been by trifles such as the Classical world, the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, the age of technology and the founding of civilization and democracy. It is well known now that Blacks invented everything from the plough to the Large Hadron Collider, so they should be fairly represented in history, even if they weren’t there, rather than the racist reminder that the main place Blacks are over-represented seems to be prison.

Sir Richard Attenborough, who I mentioned at the start, directed the film Gandhi in 1982 , with Ben Kingsley in the lead role. Kingsley, a brilliant and much-loved actor in the UK, has escaped cancel culture for the role as he was born Krishna Pandit Bhanji (albeit in Yorkshire in the north of England) but a story attaches itself to the production which I hope is true, as it offers advice to the British entertainment industry as to how a producer might respond to a demand for more Blacks in the cast. An Indian adviser on the film suggested to Attenborough that the main character of Gandhi might be more properly portrayed by a beam of light rather than a human actor. Attenborough replied; “We’re making a film about Gandhi, not fucking Tinkerbell”.

    Enjoyed reading this but it once did work… in reverse. Back when there were few non white actors of any merit beyond Sidney Poitier studios making expensive epic films expected them to make money we got “Khartoum” a 1966 production about one of those British colonial wars.

    Here, to give the movie some American box office appeal, we got Charleton Heston as English General Gordon and Sir Laurence Olivier as the deranged Islamic warlord but you would never know it was Olivier. Hollywood wardrobe and makeup artists could darken up an actor and dress him up as a savage and Olivier became as believable as a 19th century Islamic fanatic as if he were an escapee from ISIS.

    Yul Brynner made a splendid Siamese King that even the Thai’s could enjoy. Afterall it wasn’t uncommon for white men to rule 19th century Asian kingdoms. Hitler made Japanese honorary whites and British and American soldiers soon found out why. But negroes. Come on! These people have been on the caboose of mankind for so long no one takes them seriously as statesmen, scientists or anything serious.

  6. Didn’t see the BBC (the broadcaster) version of Anne Boleyn. Was her sister, also a piece of skirt for the obese Welshman, Black as well? If not, that would be difficult for the Countess of Ormand to explain.

Now that we know the truth that Anne Boleyn was really black, the truth is that she didn’t have her head cut off by a swordsman at all, she was lynched with the approval of the Sheriff of Nottingham. The actual deed was done by an early version of the KKK which later spread to the USA. In those days it was called the Kings Klux Klan of which Henry Vlll was the grand dragon.

    Indeed, certain actors have been known for their versatility through the ages. Jose Ferrer, Yul Brynner and Anthony Quinn, for example. Character actor John Dehner was another. Among Kingsley’s many roles was as a Royal Ulster Constabulary Special Branch dectective protecting an informer in the film Fifty Dead Men Walking. David Lean received a lot of criticism for casting Sir Alec Guinness as an Indian physician in A Passage to India, but his casting as an elderly doctor was definitely not ridiculous. I also remember Olivier and Orson Welles in their very different takes in their title roles in Othello. In the case of Mr. Welles, check out how he was outfitted and cast as a Khan-like warlord in the movie The Black Rose (1950), which also starred Tyrone Power and Jack Hawkins.But, as for this Woke crapola, the relentless bombardment with it indicates that there are sinister elementss directing it; it certainly ain’t the market. I wonder if they are the same forces at work in the U.S. as in the UK.

  12. What they are after is the elimination of our identities. Once they eliminate your identity it become much easier to eliminate you full stop. The employment of a black woman (definitely rara avis in 16th century Britain) to play Anne Boleyn is definitely a highly insulting provocation, particularly since Anne Boleyn was fair skinned and had red hair according to everything I’ve ever heard about her. They are out to destroy British history, culture, identity, and eventually the British themselves.

    I tried to put this in a more appropriate thread, but I got blocked. I’ll try here.

    There was a friend of both JS Mill and Darwin (can’t remember the name) who traveled to Jamaica to gawk at the slaves. He wrote several essays mocking the slaves as stupid and lazy. He quite liked using the word nigger.

    Both Mill and Darwin (progessives of the day) unfriended him, and he was kicked out of the Royal society. In other words, he was canceled. (~1850).

    Yeah, both Mill and Darwin wrote about savages, and maybe even used the n-word every now and then, but felt awful about the British history of moving black people around the world, torturing them and enslaving them.

    I’ll try to find a reference.

    This goes back further. Edmund Burke also had similar anti-racist feelings. (~1770)

    Even FUCKING ISAAC NEWTON (a well known heartless guy) felt awful for investing in the slave trade (after there was a market collapse). He wasn’t just upset with himself because of the money he lost, but his opinion was that the existence of such a market was inhumane. (~1600).

    Think about how the progressive British felt about the slave trade, compared to the Whites in the American South. The interracial conflicts in the Caribbean made the progressive British realize how terribly they have been treating the Blacks, and meanwhile, the Whites in the US South were terrified about being chopped to death by angry Black slaves.

  19. It’s ironic that the folks who screamed about Tilda Swinton’s casting in Dr. Strange have no problem rewriting history and literature to colorize a film. One more stake in the heart of Western culture. If I never again see a sodomite or inter-racial couple in a commercial or magazine ad it will be too soon. i’m sort of glad I’m nearing the end of my shelf life. I don’t much recognize or like this world I’m living in.

    King Edward died on January 5, 1066. One year and one day after his death, on January 6, 1067, the Roman Catholic William the Conqueror was crowned king of England in Westminster Abbey.
    Then began a terrible campaign of pillage and bloodshed by the Conqueror against the English people, which culminated in the pseudo-council of Winchester in 1070, when papal legates deposed the Orthodox Archbishop Stigand, who had refused to crown William, and placed the Roman Catholic Lanfranc in his place.

    On October 15, 1072, the last English Orthodox bishop, Ethelric of Durham, after anathematizing the Pope, died in prison at Westminster, and the grace of the priesthood left the English land, in accordance with King Edward’s prophecy. The last part of this prophecy remains to be fulfilled.

But it’s particularly pushed in historical movies. I don’t think the purpose is to brainwash or rewrite history — does anyone really believe that Anne Boleyn would be black? The purpose is humiliation.

It’s also worse than the author suggests because it is being posited as the new ‘truth’. This means that the 1948 Richard Attenborough Brighton Rock is now retrospectively racist because it excludes black people.

  26. No one would ever cast a white as Sundiata Keita or Musa Keita or Shaka Zulu. It is one thing to have black actors play in adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays, it is wholly another to have them impersonate historical white European figures. Afaic, I don’t watch shows that are designed to insult me and I don’t watch shows that deform History to advance an ideology but if Western Europeans and Americans like to be spat in the face, who am I to object?

    Joan of Arc was not burnt by the French. She was burnt by the English in Rouen, the capital of the English territory of Normandy. French was still the language of English courts and legal documents. English prosecuted her judged her and burnt her. Burgundy, now Belgium and bits and pieces of N France and S Germany was always the ally of England against the French. Some of the judges were Burgundian as well as English. All proceedings were in French.

To do the BBC justice, I don’t think they’ve yet falsified history in such a vulgar way.

    With the arts in the West now long dead, it makes no sense to continue hoping for anything worthwhile to come out of studios in the US, Britain, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, etc.

    As for tv and cinema, in Turkey, Russia and India, they still make great movies and tv-series: highly recommended!

He doesn’t treat the Americans as special because they are “White” but because they are different from his European opponents. Teddy Roosevelt (The Lion) is special because he leads a “special” nation. Connery, with a POSH accent and in dark makeup, makes the whole thing work when it started out as a “spaghetti” Western. After all, who knows what an intelligent Berber speaking English would sound like. In the period (~1904) in North Africa, a British accent might have been correct.

    The movie was marginal except Connery’s character was superb. He, and the Spanish Special Forces, stole the show.

    In any event, Connery’s acting skill made the cross-ethnicity (or cross racial) component irrelevant while a Black Anne Boleyn just throws that incongruity into the viewer’s face. There are few actors who can overcome and convert such an obvious disconnectp into the theatrical presentation.

  53. By coincidence, I have just made a decision to boycott British films for all the examples stated above. The straw that broke my back was “See How They Run,” which is currently in theaters. Set in the winter of 1953, it is at once a tribute to the Agatha Christie school of murder mysteries and a loving send-up of same, much like “Young Frankenstein.” The only thing preventing my enjoyment of the film was the casting.

    One of the characters, Mervyn Cocker-Norris is a sophisticated bon vivant playwright much like Noel Coward. He was played by one David Oyelowo.

    Another character, a film producer, is having an affair with his assistant, played by a negress by the name of Pippa Bennett-Warner.

    Then came the clincher. Agatha Christie’s second husband, Max Mallowan, a renowned archaeologist, was played by Lucian Msmati.

    What’s the point of taking pains to recreate the atmosphere of 1953 — the clothing, the furniture, the autos, the technology — if you’re going to undercut it by sabotaging the casting? It totally disrupts the narrative. Do they really think the audience doesn’t notice — or doesn’t care?

    Interestingly, there was nothing in the previews that would indicate this sort of thing, so in a sense I was suckered into seeing this film, even though I always avoid movies with even the slightest hint of wokeism.

    Given the British penchant for this sort of thing, the only sensible response is to avoid British films.

    I think few object to a black actor playing a white role. What people are catching on to is that there is an agenda behind it. Some roles should be played by actors who resemble the historical figure as closely as possible. Lincoln, for example, should (to my mind at least) be played by a white actor with a Lincoln-like accent. Hitler should be played by a white actor, German ancestry if possible. Shaka Zulu should be played by a black, Zulu if possible, just as the emperor Haille Selaise should be played by an Ethiopian if possible. Having Tom Cruise play Haille Selaisie would be plain silly, just as silly (and unacceptable) to have Nelson Madela being portrayed by a Dutch Boer.

    The black playing Anne Boleyn is a Brit. And while I think it’s a tough sell. It may be that Brita have reached that point where a Brit is Brit is a Brit, regardless of skin color. I think the matter of performances where whites take on roles of blacks, if there is such a thing, would be holy dependent on factors . . . a white taking on the role of Dr. Martin Luther could certainly be possible, but would remove a good deal of the context and it would a hard shift to the suspension of disbelief that performance of of stage and screen require to really work.

    The contention that the author is attempting to make — has some value and force. But even in this instance — the color of Anne Boleyn’s skin was not central or even tangential to her tragic life. So the skin color is not as hard to overcome — again, I have some angst — but by and large, not so much.

    The author is making claims that are incorrect, the role is not making any revisionist claims. That would require an argument that Miss Boleyn was in fact a woman of color. That is not even an issue here – certainly not the argument. His attempt to misconstrue what is going on in Britain is an utter fail. All Britain is doing is hiring blacks, browns, and yellows — primarily brits or British subjects of the Common wealth, where they had routinely denied them before in roles in which color is a nonissue.

    I am huge fan of Midsomers Murders and Prime Suspect . . . the only hurdle for me was making the adjustment. It is not as if there weren’t wealthy brown in the country or Blacks in local communities as portrayed in Broad Church . . .     I stopped watching after the Tom Baker ‘Doctor’ (Doctor #4, after Jon Pertwee).

    The last episode I watched was the one where The Doctor turned into that guy from ‘All Creatures Great and Small‘ (I never watched that, but my Mum loved it, along with the original Poldark).

    It was probably about the right time in life to leave aside childish things: I think that episode was broadcast (in Australia) in mid-late 1981, so I would have been 16 – I should have had better things to do (at 6:30 weeknights? In 1981? What ‘better things’? Footy training finished at 6pm).

    Those were some great days though: The Goodies; Kenny Everett; Black Arrow; The Tomorrow People; Blake’s Seven (that was on late: 10:30pm Thursday).

    Even stuff that was definitely aimed at pre-teen boys at the time – Danger Mouse and Bananaman – both punched above their weight and had some pretty subversive content. Better than Roger Ramjet, for sure… in-line with Bat-Fink.

Casting Mr Sidney Portier in the role did not lead to some angry outburst about inequalities and the suggestion that such casting would is without merit. Certainly there is an impact of casting more people of color and considering their voices, including angry voices, but that is not the result of the casting, but a reflection of an reality that is already on display.

    There are no such movies as you suggest. None of expectation violations breech the ground you example. But you have to address the larger question of the central issue regarding entertainment and historical or even literary fiction —

    creative license.

    Elizabeth is not set in historical stone and the Golden Age went even further afield. And if you don’t think that whites take liberties now regarding historical accuracy then you have not been paying attention.

    In this film, that the author questions, is it at all possible for a african Brit to portray a figure such as Ann Boleyn who was white? To the extent that the viewers buy in, suspend their notions about color — possibly. The hurdle is less so because, the issues surrounding the woman in question was not about her heritage so much as her and conduct in the life of King Henry and the community at large. The skin color issue largely plays to the reaction to the expectation.

    Again, I think it’s a tough sell. But I am not British, that is surely a question they will confront if they choose. Could British viewers suspend their own expectation to the performance. In this case, a brit is playing a brit

    Regarding black immigrants: the UK would (obviously) be a better place if it had no Blacks, but many poor immigrants fit neatly into their class position and deserve some credit for that.

    Well, your complaint lacks any relevance to cause of why a film cast in that manner would not work.

    1. A film about Nelson Mandella by definition most likely requires a black actor because the issues are about skin color —

    2. A film about DR/Rev Martin Luther King’s role in gaining rights for blacks again is about skin color – skin color is the salient issue.

    3. A film about Mr. Frederick Douglass would hard to pull off because the central themes are about and resolve around skin color.

    4. As long as the film distanced itself from relevant issue regarding skin color – it might work.

    5. As long as the issues did not revolve around skin color and gender (in which case she could take on the challenge of being a male.

    This makes sense. I think there are similar figures for complaints about workplace and employment discrimination. Women win those cases while most blacks don’t (for the obvious reason that women are actually genuine victims of serious discrimination, while blacks are only victims of relatively mild discrimination).

    the african american , especially males who want to crank widgets for a living required nothing but the job they were qualified to do. They did not require new restrooms, special courses in sensitivity, removal of posters, an entire new language system, dress code . . . a black male required no cultural change to turn widgets, women demand it. but in placing skin color as the factor in employment and afraid, to tell their white daughters, mothers girl friends, and wives no, — whites short changed the system and as result are experiencing the cultural upheaval of change.

    With added bonus of blaming the black population, for a mess they did not create.

    No research to back this up, but I’d guess that all AA requires us to lower standards a bit (or have a suboptimal selection process).

    Whether we should have AA at all is one thing. But the standards don’t need to be lowered much for women while they often need to be lowered a lot for blacks.

    Some would argue the suboptimal selection process for women is good for society. That may be true. It seems harder to justify AA for racial groups.

    In other words when I was a young conservative, I bought the arguments about Aa, employment, quotas . . . etc.

    Then I actually read the data sets. I actually had to face history for what it was and is as opposed to the agenda I adopted and created. I actually attended religious conservative schools, belonged to young republicans, YAF and upon test, found that there is a good deal wanting for the sake of a political agenda. It’s election season, and the black card always is a good cattle call.

    But integrity has come to mean something over the years, and the cattle call is just not as convenient as it used to be.

    There’s a much more important tribe than color politics. And blacks are just as disgusted with my positions as whites, latinos, women, same sex practioners, and foreigners who certainly enjoy the amercan dollar and being able cut in line — they are politely grateful.

    I appreciate women . . . but no black by has ever suggested I needed a course in sensitivity training. A desire to operate in accuracy is not popular.

    That would in fact be revisionist. But in this case, the only question is whether a black woman, an attractive black woman, every bit as attractive as Queen Boleyn play that role and be embraced by the audience. Would they suspend belief on the question of color.

    How the above comment relates to the issue isn’t clear. There is no suggestion, that a black woman playing a white historical figure out of some notion that blacks, in this case a black or black women in general are being cast because whites hate themselves.

    It’s a simple acknowledgement that black actors and actresses are part of British history period and as such share the legacy. You do realize that blacks from India and the Continent expended millions of lives in the cause of Great Britain and France and other European powers. And did so in the same of Queen and country, wearing the same uniforms, spilling their blood, even before whites. I was quite shocked to learn that the first waves across the lines, especially along the French border were African and Indian troops.

    Now learning that done not cause me a lick of concern that suddenly blacks were replacing whites along the same killing fields, that WWI was suddenly be deemed a black mans war. But clearly I had to revise my view of who was there, thousands of miles from their own lands and families.
