Is there anything Wokeness won’t spoil? Rhetorical:

We will be changing the multiverse ID and removing the Gatherer card image for the card Invoke Prejudice, originally printed in 1994. The card is racist and made even worse by the multiverse ID it was unfortunately codified with years ago. There’s no place for racism in our game, nor anywhere else.

But to that point, it should never have been published nor placed in the Gatherer. And for that we are sorry. The events of the past weeks and the ongoing conversation about how we can better support people of color have caused us to examine ourselves, our actions, and our inactions. We appreciate everyone helping us to recognize when we fall short. We should have been better, we can be better, and we will be better.

To that end, we will be removing a number of images from our database that are racist or culturally offensive, including:

Invoke Prejudice
Cleanse
Stone-Throwing Devils
Pradesh Gypsies
Jihad
Imprison
Crusade
Replacing those card images will be the following statement:

“We have removed this card image from our database due to its racist depiction, text, or combination thereof. Racism in any form is unacceptable and has no place in our games, nor anywhere else.”

The subsequent pieces of art will all be replaced online with this:

With Wokeness there can be no art, no humor, no beauty, no aspiration. Just a grayed out rigid conformity, the only emotions permitted being resentment and snark.

Cleanse got the boot because of its field text, which reads “destroy all black creatures”. Hunting down a specific black creature, in contrast, is still okay–for now:

Pfft, sadly no one cares about black-on-black crime, that’s the only reason Dark Betrayal gets a pass. For heaven’s sake, look at the flavor text: “You’re just like me; ruthless, cunning, and ambitious. Obviously you’re a threat.” Dialogue ripped right off the streets of South Chicago!

Oh yeah? Then explain how this cleric who specializes in destroying black creatures still has a job.

It’s only a matter of time before Mass Calcify gets uncarded:

Because whites can tolerate massive calcium dumps, you see. Milk does a Euro body good! Hispanics, Asians, and other non-white non-blacks need to get complaining, pronto. Or their self-appointed white allies need to, anyway!

Crusade gets the Jacques de Molay treatment:

Subsequent reprints of the card replaced real world historical references with generic fantasy depictions. As is always the case when Woke mobs have something in their sights, though, no amount of appeasing deterred them from destroying the target of their wrath.

These exiled cards are, on top of being digitally deleted, now officially banned from sanctioned play:

Additionally, these cards will be banned in all sanctioned tournament play.

The uncarded cards aren’t competitive, so it’s an empty gesture. In the case of Crusade, Honor of the Pure–a name that must itself be problematic–is strictly better:

Imprison is banished because it’s a black card that includes the word “prison” and appears to depict a black or possibly north African man in a tight spot.

The card game is rife with brutal depictions of people of all races suffering, though the overwhelming majority of the victims (and the perpetrators) appear to be of European ancestry:

Invoke Prejudice is the most triggering card of the crop. The figures depicted in the artwork look like what Dali painting klan geists might. That the artwork is hardly flattering provides no apology. Remember what happened to the Papa John’s guy for uttering the N-word in the context of how horribly offensive it is? He got the Invoke Prejudice treatment, too.

Parenthetically, Invoke Prejudice is a blue card. The game’s five-color scheme doesn’t have any correspondence to differences among human races. It does, in proper Tolkienesque-fashion, have something to do with different humanoid species, but even those boundaries aren’t hard and fast. Sorin and Liliana are depicted as racially white–but they are black cards:

While Teferi the protector is a black man of the dual colors white and blue:

Wizards of the Coast threw out Crusade on account of the alleged racist nature of the card (good grief, the things we have to write and say in this day and age of stultifying intellectual totalitarianism). It also tossed Jihad for a presumably similar reason:

For those unfamiliar with the game, the insinuation from the card text is that the “Jihadis” are white (by card color). So both Crusade and Jihad are white cards–to oversimplify, they’re on the same team–and both are being banned for putative racism. Racist against who exactly is unclear. I guess the world’s two largest religions, both of which are gaining more new converts in Africa than anywhere else, are racial in their essence. Who knew?

The next one is kind of funny. These gypsies steal the power of the opposing side’s forces:

The bigger insult to the noble Roma people is how crappy the card is. Even in the olden tymes, before the great creature power inflation and corresponding spell deflation occurred, this card was bad.

Is “stone-throwing devils” a slur of some kind? It’s genuinely hard to even figure out a pretense otherwise:

The creatures look like pink-hued devils. Is the thinking this could be construed as a derogatory depiction of American Indians? That seems absurd even in this hysterical context.

Parenthetically, card names, artwork, and flavor text have no bearing on actual game play. They are aesthetic enhancements that provide the experience flair and vivacity. But in terms of actual mechanics, everything about Magic is strictly rules-based. The cards could be called A1, A2, A3 … ZZZ212, ZZZ213, ZZZ214 and nothing about the game play itself would change. Magic is not like Dungeons and Dragons, where players make things up as they go along. To analogize, Magic is to Poker what Chess is to Checkers.

The release concludes with:

There’s much more work to be done as we continue to make our games, communities, and company more inclusive. Know that we work every day to be better and that we hear you. We look forward to sharing more of our plans with you as our games and organization evolve.

If by “evolve” we mean card burning, then yes, yes indeed.

Wokeism, like its spiritual predecessor Puritanism, is mortified by the idea that some people, somewhere might be enjoying themselves.

  1. In a bizarre coincidence, the card Invoke Prejudice was given the ID number 1488, which is also now changed.

Wow, and now the number has been removed. It's like hotels where none of the floors have a room 13.

The artist apparently was an actual white nationalist (I went to his website and it has pictures of Hitler as Jesus), but Invoke Prejudice always struck me as vaguely anti-racist...it's saying racism is evil magic.

Virtue’s Ruin is still around fortunately! It’s stupid considering the ENTIRE lore of MTG is creatures of different mana affinities fighting one another. How do they expect racism not to be an inbuilt feature of the MTG universe when White is explicitely good and designed to cleanse the world, whereas Black is inherently evil (usually). Of course these dynamics are exploited for different planes and story elements, New Phyrexian White + Elesh Norn being evil while Innistrad Vampire Sorin is good (though he becomes BW). Rosewater has run this into the ground shoving in pandering to diverse demographics with stuff like Alesha being a tranny. To be fair, he is Jewish, so what did we all expect?

Let us have a quick look of the spoilers for the new core set 2021 to see how diverse MTG is now:

Of the legendary named creatures+planeswalkers there are 14 humans, breaking these down we get:

    4 White Men
    5 Non-White Women*
    3 Non-White Men
    2 White Women

    7 Women, 7 Men
    6 Whites, 8 non-Whites

*Chandra included because she is lore wise meant to be Indian, Azusa also included but should not be part of criticism as she is from a Japanese plane, but does prove the general point.

We’ve reached the point where non-Whites are the majority of MTG legendary cards! Gone are the bigoted days of exploring different planes with different races on them. Why yes Kamigawa was always multicultural! WOTC has completely destroyed the lore and setting of the game by pandering this garbage and pushing it. Every single set has to have badass black women in control and positions of power, thereby invalidating the concept of travelling somewhere else in the multiverse.

Personally, I am going to be selling my collection. Screw WOTC I won’t spend another minute thinking about them and their game. I have other friends that play that have mentioned they won’t be selling but they won’t be spending anymore money on the game, just keeping their cards as an investment. Hopefully people stop playing and they let WOTC pander to zoomers with Arena and trannies that are too busy paying off SRS to buy packs from them so they go broke.

The message I've been getting is to try to disengage from gaming culture. And more importantly, try to teach your kids to disengage from it, to develop more hobbies that take place in the real world, away from the propaganda apparatus. At the very least, pursue balance in this matter and try to engage with it much more casually.

And it's a struggle for me, because I am drawn to pretty much every aspect of gaming -- video games, board games, CCGs, RPGs. And I'm sure that's in my DNA. But somewhere along the line, gaming and nerd culture went from being dominated by basically libertarian men to being enslaved to the sick ideology of every sort of weirdo, all competing to out-Woke each other. At least that's how it is in the West -- some pockets in Eastern Europe and Japan maintain something like the old culture, but it looks to me like the entire West is compromised on this matter.

I think the reason that the Woke takeover happened is because Woke delusions thrive in realms of fantasy. As Yogi Berra said, you can observe a lot just by watching. It's tough to have too many far-fetched delusions about the world if you carefully watch the world. But there's no limit to the delusions you can maintain if so much of your headspace is occupied by fantasy.

So, I try to take all this as a cautionary tale and disengage from fantasy worlds.

mtgpress.net is a great resource. You can even buy card stock and produce your decks at cost without WOTC getting a dime if that suits you. It doesn't cut it for sanctioned events, obviously, but for casual play it's great.

But - when you are done disengaging with the things, people, and forms of "entertainment" that are poisoning you, the next step is to engage with things, people and entertainment that strengthen and give you courage.

There are still many things (building, painting, gardening, what have you) and people who are good. Let's not forget that. There are still good people. Never forget that.

But we need entertainment too. A healthy society has a great high culture - and that is under assault right now from the forces of destruction. I suspect many of the people who comment here are more into rock music (or even, heaven forbid, rap) rather than classical music. There's no accounting for taste. I'm not the block watcher.

But although you don't realize it, you personally benefit from living in a society with symphony orchestras. And they, too, are under assault by BLM.

It's funny: it seems that BLM has a keener eye for cultural treasure than most whites. Maybe Paul Craig Anderson is right. "Whites are too dumbshit to survive."

I agree that getting into Tolkien won't save you. Though he's still better than most of what's out there.

But you're wrong about Christianity. It's the only significant force left in the West opposing certain forms of Wokeness. If the Woke cultural conquest is complete, then it will only be in certain Christian pockets that anything left of Western civilization remains.

Christianity is the opposite of the fantasy culture, because it's rooted in certain unchanging truths. So while some Christians are swayed by the spirit of the age, Scripture and tradition are always bending back against it.

But meanwhile, fantasy worlds just change as the zeitgeist does, only faster. New fantasy worlds are created, old ones are modified (which is the process AE highlighted in this post).

Then he fucked everyone over in order to hide the fact that his crew was absolutely shit at server security.

His big error was that MtGox was a storage medium of choice for a lot of Russians who have leather-coated friends with crooked noses. For a while he genuinely thought that he would be OK if the BTC turned up (which they have).

  18. The bigger insult to the noble Roma people is how crappy the card is.

With all due respect, apparently you have no experience with actual gypsies or you don’t know anybody who has.

Perhaps your reference to them as “noble” comes only from a game. Or maybe you are being sarcastic. Forgive me if that’s it.

Gypsies are not noble, but many Westerners have fantasies and delusions about them. The name “Roma” is yet another gypsy trick. There is nothing close to gypsies whatsoever Roman or connected to any understanding of the European concept that the word and its root put into the mind of the reader or hearer of the word.

They have their bell-curve outliers, of course, as everyone does, and good for them. We should always first give individuals the benefit of the doubt — and I have little doubt that even this statement is a reflection of my own, White, Western being, my people’s history, and my upbringing.

In Romania, a place I know pretty well, gypsies are a human weeds, trash-picking pickpockets who have been known to deliberately cripple their own children to turn them into beggars.

I have encountered many of them, and I have shooed away many of their children, whom they put on the street to try to come up and beg or pick my pocket. I have also seen their old women lying in the middle of sidewalks, fake-crying to manipulate my emotions.

Gypsies are far from an oppressed minority. There have been many efforts there to integrate them into society, including money and free houses from the West. Habitat for Humanity has built homes for them, which I have seen. None of this works. They insist on being separate and living parasitically among everyone else.

You can barely get them to send their children to school, and if they do, their kids stink and make themselves nuisances to the clean, well-behaved students around them. I know this because I have young relatives in school there.

    Noble my ass.

  19. Wokeism, like its spiritual predecessor Puritanism, is mortified by the idea that some people, somewhere might be enjoying themselves.

Puritanism was one of the single best moral forces on this planet which pushed progress along far faster than it would’ve otherwise. It not only taught but demanded temperance and diligence. These values are today derided as ‘bourgeois’. They are the bedrock of civilisation.

Banning racist cards because racists get sad is hardly a step backwards. Moral hysteria/panic is one of the principal reasons why there is any moral and civilisational progress at all. Moral hysteria was behind the abolition of slavery and the full franchisement of women.

We live in times when there are fewer and smaller battles to fight, but they are still worth fighting. It is easy to get stuck at these minor details, but many small runnels will eventually form a large river.

The bigger insult to the noble Roma people is how crappy the card is.

With all due respect, apparently you have no experience with actual gypsies or you don't know anybody who has.

Perhaps your reference to them as "noble" comes only from a game. Or maybe you are being sarcastic. Forgive me if that's it.

Gypsies are not noble, but many Westerners have fantasies and delusions about them. The name "Roma" is yet another gypsy trick. There is nothing close to gypsies whatsoever Roman or connected to any understanding of the European concept that the word and its root put into the mind of the reader or hearer of the word.

They have their bell-curve outliers, of course, as everyone does, and good for them. We should always first give individuals the benefit of the doubt -- and I have little doubt that even this statement is a reflection of my own, White, Western being, my people's history, and my upbringing.

The Habitat houses are in Romania, and they are very nice. They remind me of the houses I saw that the US government built for Indians on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona (where I enjoyed many experiences as a young man backpacking and even hitchhiking rides from Navajos.) But they are more colorful, prettier, as European structures tend to be.

Forgive me if I misunderstood. I don't know about the million-dollar anything in Britain, but I would not be surprised. Gypsies are experts at getting free stuff, and there are some rich ones. I have heard of rich gypsies and "gypsy gold."

Again also, let's remember that there are fine people from every group in the world. My wife reminds me about great gypsy musicians, even doctors. Let us remember to give every individual the benefit of the doubt. That is human and good.

Gypsies have worked their way into Canada and the US. Even now we read about them shitting on the street in Pennsylvania, having somehow gotten into the US, probably as hardship cases of some kind. It is a mistake to let them in. They are the reason even my US government still has some restrictions for entry from Romania into my country. If not for the gypsies, Romania would enjoy a more normal, European status. Whatever restrictions remain are because of gypsies.

Yep. Puritanism is one of those noxious weeds that is extraordinarily difficult to eliminate. It just keeps springing up again and each new manifestation is just as sick and just as unhinged as the previous version.

    Replies: @Achmed E. Newman, @Peter D. Bredon, @Tusk

Unfortunately the libertarian and reactionary romantacism of fantasy has been completely destroyed. I feel completely the same in regard to things like crpgs and ccgs, but unfortunately if I have to give it up so these woke losers learn a lesson I will.

Virtue's Ruin is still around fortunately! It's stupid considering the ENTIRE lore of MTG is creatures of different mana affinities fighting one another.

We've reached the point where non-Whites are the majority of MTG legendary cards!

Screw WOTC I won't spend another minute thinking about them and their game. I have other friends that play that have mentioned they won't be selling but they won't be spending anymore money on the game, just keeping their cards as an investment. Hopefully people stop playing and they let WOTC pander to zoomers with Arena and trannies that are too busy paying off SRS to buy packs from them so they go broke.

    Replies: @Wency, @Audacious Epigone

mtgpress.net is a great resource. You can even buy card stock and produce your decks at cost without WOTC getting a dime if that suits you. It doesn’t cut it for sanctioned events, obviously, but for casual play it’s great.

Puritanism was one of the single best moral forces on this planet which pushed progress along far faster than it would've otherwise. It not only taught but demanded temperance and diligence. These values are today derided as 'bourgeois'.

The only place they can really get anything out of you is at the workplace. That's the real problem, but it's the reason I saw there is power in numbers. If half of your department walks out on some BS woke lecture, or you all just go to the bathroom one at a time and never come back in, well, they're are the ones with the problem. It’s funny: it seems that BLM has a keener eye for cultural treasure than most whites. Maybe Paul Craig Anderson is right. “Whites are too dumbshit to survive.”

    Could be!

It's also possible that right-wingers are too dumbshit to ever actually win.

And it's also possible that the damage already done to western civilisation is irreparable.

Ironically much of the western cultural tradition such as classical music will survive, but it will survive in places like China.

There are still many things (building, painting, gardening, what have you) and people who are good. Let’s not forget that. There are still good people. Never forget that.

True. In fact most people are basically OK really. They go along with the zeitgeist because they're too scared not to, or they simply don't realise how indoctrinated they are. But most people would still like to find that one special person of the opposite sex with whom to spend the rest of their lives, they'd still like to raise their kids (unfortunately often only one kid) as well as they can, they'd like to have a decent job with some actual job security, they'd like to buy a house. They won't oppose Wokeness because if they do they know they're likely to lose everything they've got.

But we need entertainment too. A healthy society has a great high culture – and that is under assault right now from the forces of destruction.

Agreed, but a healthy society should also have a healthy popular culture. The West no longer produces anything of value in either high culture or pop culture. Which is the really worrying sign that we've entered full-blown decadence.

I suspect many of the people who comment here are more into rock music (or even, heaven forbid, rap) rather than classical music. There’s no accounting for taste. I’m not the block watcher.

I love 1960s pop music. Up until about 1967 most of it was still pretty good and pretty healthy. It could be argued that The Beatles destroyed heathy pop music. 1967 was an incredibly ominous year. The Beatles released the Sergeant Pepper album which killed pop music. Hollywood went crazy over movies like Bonnie & Clyde that glamourised criminal thugs and celebrated mindless violence. 1967 may have been the year in which the West put a gun to its head and pulled the trigger.

Mind you, western high culture was already mostly worthless anti-civilisational trash by the time WW2 started. Western high culture peaked in the 19h century.

I’d consider gaming culture, if such thing exists, to be the true anti-culture of yore.

My limited contact with fellow ‘gamers’ tells me it’s a white (or whitish, mena types do gravitate towards us), male, excellency-oriented non-political affair.

And you can talk pretty much everything with them, although it’s like talking to the wind most of the time.

As for pop, it’s prolly your age showing, there’s plenty of new good stuff out there. There was even a bonnie/clyde remake that glamorised their hunters done recently. As if it was any better.

As for 19th century, being sympathetic to the more liberal in it’s continental sense, as a golden age. It was a century of revolutions, agitprop being started to be pushed to the masses by poetry and serialized novels, fake wars, fake ideologies, and all the fruits of aforementioned labor that resulted in the 20th.

Well there was the Khmer Rouge's Year Zero and the French Revolution's Year One, so there are precedents. Do we hope for a new Robespierre or a new Pol Pot?

We're already close to the stage at which there is no point in writing a novel or making a movie because while it may be politically correct today by tomorrow it will be discovered to be racist and transphobic and cancelled.

Ideally every year should be Year Zero. At the end of the year every single cultural and entertainment artifact should be destroyed to make way for the new more enlightened products of the new Year Zero.

There would be difficulties for historians if every year was Year Zero but that's no problem - we don't need historians since we don't need history.

It becomes more and more obvious that we're not heading for Brave New World or 1984, but rather Alice in Wonderland. Lewis Carroll was a more profound political prophet than Orwell or Huxley.

What, you mean obsessing about Tolkien's books won't bring back European civilization? That'll disappoint a lot of folks.

Probably a good explanation for how every form of Christianity is now fully Woke.

    Replies: @Wency

I agree that getting into Tolkien won’t save you. Though he’s still better than most of what’s out there.

But you’re wrong about Christianity. It’s the only significant force left in the West opposing certain forms of Wokeness. If the Woke cultural conquest is complete, then it will only be in certain Christian pockets that anything left of Western civilization remains.

Christianity is the opposite of the fantasy culture, because it’s rooted in certain unchanging truths.

To me, it's an interesting question what most Europeans looked like in 1492, before the introduction of the potato. Of course, there are a lot of paintings - and some have analyzed these and claimed a diabetes epidemic, sometime in the following centuries, as food scarcity decreased sharply. But, of course, it is not the same as photographs.

BTW, this is one of Jared Diamond's old theories. Supposedly, why Europeans are relatively more resistant to Type II diabetes today - the ones who got it didn't have too many children. Though, it seems testable, and I don't know if any proved it.

The painting you linked to is actually posthumous, from 1519. I understand that Columbus was described as a powerful figure, at the time. I actually tend to believe it, since I vaguely recall some incident where one of his younger brothers defeated three armed rebels single-handedly. Of course, I myself picture him more wiry, and a bit less like He-man.
