UK leads off the COTW triumvirate by addressing how, in a party ostensibly more woke in 2020 than in 2016 and certainly than in 2008, the nomination has come down to two geriatric heterosexual white men so old the “ok boomer” meme doesn’t apply–because both are pre-boomers:
They are grandfathered in, that is all. Their identities are already established. If they were new there’d be nothing to catch people’s attention. Just more stale, pale white guys.
Quite good at speaking, interesting policies and other stuff like that, just doesn’t have the star power compared to “gay”, “woman”, “Latino”, “black”.
It was just that Bernie was already Bernie and Biden was already Biden. Even “billionaire” was a complete flop for Steyer and Bloomberg, and Bloomberg has an entire news organisation named after him and spent more on each vote than any normal person would ever have to be bribed to pick him.

It’s also interesting that the one woman who in recent years has won the Dem nomination, Hillary Clinton, only did so on her husband’s coat-tails. My instinct is that UK is largely correct and have in fact argued the same in January of 2019:
The only two white men with a chance at the nomination are Biden and Sanders, both on account of their long party histories. The days of white male Democrats rising to the top of the party are over. There are those like the aforementioned Biden and Sanders who will be grandfathered in, but the door to national-level leadership is shut for new entrants.
I think UK is correct but it’s hard to argue that dfordoom is incorrect. That should be irreconcilable, yet here we are. Of the 24 or so candidates who entered, no one else came close to Biden and Sanders at the national level. Four years down the road, when the pair are playing five o’clock Bingo, is Elizabeth Warren really going to be leading the pack with Julian Castro hot on her heels?

There is no stare decisis in the field of ripening actuality; Bernie cannot lay claim to a Trump-like success just because he was once considered a Trump-like dark horse. After all, some losers lose for a reason. In their heart of hearts, people do want to be Donald Trump. It looks like it feels cool to be Trump, while being Bernie Sanders looks like it feels like a case of laryngitis. That is why Trump wins and Bernie doesn’t.
Furthermore, Bernie gives no evidence that he is at all interested in foreign policy whatsoever. If he were president, he would simply let the Pentagon write its own rulebooks while he himself got summarily taken to the cleaners by every two-bit dictator and scoundrel under the four winds. People sense these things, and they aren’t going to give the power to the cross between Jimmy Carter and Gilbert Gottfried.
Bernie is not going to make it in the real election. Giving away the store is a cheap and womanish way to buy popularity. But it only works if the real power decides to sit on its hands, which it won’t.
He’s a millionaire with three houses, so “loser” is a relative term in this context, but it’s a thought-provoking assessment at the least.

Theresa May, Hilary Clinton, Elizabeth Warren, Jo Swinson, Kamala Harris, Rebecca Long-Bailey…the more the public saw of them, the less the public liked them. In other words, they benefited from popular prejudice and were brought down when people were forced to evaluate them on their own merits. It was the same pattern of energy replicated again and again. Exciting! Woman! Super-intelligent! Something’s off. Inauthentic. Fraud.
On the other hand, Margaret Thatcher, Angela Merkel and Nicola Sturgeon were all women who made exceptional politicians. Sturgeon is the head of the Scottish National Party and, though I thoroughly dislike her opinions, she is really great at her job.
Is it just that being at the top of politics is actually very hard and very competitive, and that to be at the top you have to be one of the best? Probably.
Naturally, being the best at politics is not the same as being the best for your people/country/world/anything but the game, but if you want the job you better be damn good at the game itself.
Maybe women tend to be less good at that game and, given prevailing popular prejudices of exact equality, many women are over-promoted on the basis of their sex; and then they are found out in the test of elections.
Would the husband of a successful female politician be seen as an obvious political candidate? Would someone as annoying and inauthentic as Warren be seen as the certain best, most competent, most smartest?
If your party selects its candidates based on sex or race, it is going to get some cr*p ones. Indeed it’ll be even worse if you select your candidates on these characteristics against the statistical preponderance of quality! It’d be like picking your high school track star simply because she is Indian…though to note: you still wouldn’t be best at picking them if you just chose a random black guy. You make the kids actually all run a race. Or many races.
This means that although there is immense star power in Pokémon style identities, it is doubly mediated, first through the actual distribution of talent, and second, through the misallocation of media and publicity resources to bad candidates based on progressive prejudices that fail to recognise the actual (unequal) distribution of talent.
And for those who think the best politicians don’t have to be great at politics to be successful…who are you kidding?
