Bloomberg may run third party. He seems to really despise both Trump and Sanders.
Does anyone here know the latest a candidate could get on the general election ballot if they wanted to run as an independent?
Something else to consider is that most states have a "Sore Loser" law that prevents someone who lost a primary from appearing on the general election ballot. Gary Johnson ran into this problem in 2012. He had already dropped out of the Republican Primaries, but was still on the ballot in Michigan (where he lost, obviously). IIRC, the Libertarian Party got around this by recruiting some other guy named Gary Johnson to be their candidate in Michigan.
Bloomberg wasn't on the ballot in NH and isn't on the ballot in SC. I wonder if that's some 4th dimensional chess thinking going on.
Although I suspect a lot of his support from black legislators comes from being bought off, he does have several current or former black big city mayors in his corner. They might have been bought too, but it could also be that they – along with older black voters- are more law and order in disposition than young blacks and progressive whites.
Just my gut based in having lived in a majority black neighborhood. The old timers who have owned their homes for decades and watched the area go from working class to war zone and back to where values are rising are not very sympathetic to the young losers that cause trouble. They might not love stop and frisk but understand why it was being done and aren’t put off by Bloomberg like woke white and blacks are.

Interesting question, but where would Sanders and Klobuchar get the money for their campaigns? I would also like to point out that lack of choices is not “the” problem–a lack of good choices is the problem. (Not to mention people making bad choices when there are good ones available; politics as well as life in general.)
As the Democrat nominee in the scenario I had suggested, Klobuchar would presumably be guaranteed a certain amount and have an advantage over Sanders. But that still seems unlikely to be able to outweigh having to compete with what would be a total of three others running. This would be even more true for Sanders, who almost certainly would not be able to raise even nearly enough money to even come close to matching Bloomberg's practically limitless private fortune.
Then again, it doesn't always come down to who can spend the most.

Each state has it’s own deadline for independents/third parties. I believe the 1st deadline to pass is in North Carolina in May and Texas in next in June.

Bloomberg is not the first guy to play the Super Tuesday game. Hillary Clinton was sure she could eliminate Obama on Super Tuesday. She did get more votes and more delegates, but the delegate difference was just 20, not enough to knock Obama out of the race.
For a long time, for as long as I can remember, people have been saying that an effective strategy could be to focus only on the Super Tuesday states and skip the preliminaries. The argument is that the stakes are too low and the risk too high to participate in Iowa and New Hampshire. Bloomberg is testing that theory.
What’s even more interesting about Bloomberg’s strategy is he appears to be skipping the next two debates. It makes some sense, as he is not on the ballot in Nevada and South Carolina. Why get beat up for nothing? No only is he not following the script in terms of running in the early states, he is not bothering to participate in the normal dog and pony shows.
Without any recent polling, it is hard to know what is happening with Biden’s support. Steyer and Klobuchar have put a lot of resources into Nevada. Steyer is outspending everyone in South Carolina. Biden is making South Carolina his last stand. Bloomberg could turn out to be the shiny new penny after people got their fill of the rest of the field.
It would be ironic if Bloomberg manages to buy the nomination. Clarifying too.

As the Democrat nominee in the scenario I had suggested, Klobuchar would presumably be guaranteed a certain amount and have an advantage over Sanders. But that still seems unlikely to be able to outweigh having to compete with what would be a total of three others running. This would be even more true for Sanders, who almost certainly would not be able to raise even nearly enough money to even come close to matching Bloomberg’s practically limitless private fortune.
Then again, it doesn’t always come down to who can spend the most.

Honestly, I find Trump to be a lot like Obama on this (a statement that would no doubt have both Trumpistas and Obama-ites throttling me): both men clearly don’t have their hearts into regime change for its own sake when left to their own devices, but have rather malleable personalities and are surrounded by people who do. And that’s on them to a certain extent: the POTUS appoints his advisors and needs to be aware that *everybody* is going to try to influence him.
But I don’t see a Bloomberg candidacy as bad for Trump. Quite the opposite, it is probably the best case scenario for him next to a divided enough Democratic party that results in a third party campaign. Just like Obama could manage to play the relative anti-war candidate compared to Romney, despite his escalation in Afghanistan and ill-fated decision to intervene in Libya, Trump can do so via Bloomberg despite his hawkish moves with Iran and cozying up to the Saudis and Israelis. John Kasich made an obvious political play for greedy globalizer upper middle class Republicans and independents and greedy geezer Republicans in the 2016 New Hampshire presidential primary. Kasich’s whole message was I’ll protect your greedy government scams from that madman Trump and plenty of greedy slobs in New Hampshire went for it.
Basically, what Buttigieg is doing is telling the Greedy White Geezer Democrats in Iowa and New Hampshire that he will protect their current scams and increase the scams in their favor and that he will not upset the government gravy train applecart that sustains many Greedy White Geezer Democrats in luxury never before seen in the elderly.
This horrible fraud from Indiana is biting into Biden’s portion of the Greedy White Geezer Democrat voter bloc and the greed and civilizationally-destructive insatiable avarice of the geezers might boost Buttigieg to victory in Iowa or New Hampshire or both.
The beautiful Black ladies in the Democrat Party primary will have their say in South Carolina, however, and the AUNT JEMIMA STRATEGY of Joe Biden will electorally smash Buttigieg’s flash in the pan campaign courtesy of the Greedy White Geezer Democrats in Iowa and New Hampshire.
Any Democrat Party presidential candidate but Bernie Sanders will see a massive surge in voter support for the Green Party. Hillary Clinton has already talked about it.
