Maybe I am incorrect in my thinking, but please consider:

As far as I can understand from commentary, the tunnels of Gaza present a near-prohibitive addition to the usual difficulties of urban warfare facing the IDF in its announced ground invasion. This suggests the invasion was advertised too soon.

I can’t feature any tunnel system remaining fully functional once its ingress/egress points are substantially disrupted, since knowing where those exist is how you start fighting any enemy so sequestered. Monitoring, then ruining the access points are the next steps. While I have no doubt Israel would deploy poison gas or the like, they first have to know where the venting exists. Bombing the landscape offers a handy shortcut to this problem.

It’s unlikely that Hamas would place entries/exits to their tunnels out in the (scarce enough) open space, subject as they would be to aerial surveillance. I think they would have been obliged to locate portals on the bottom floor inside buildings within Gaza, probably hospitals and the like (if they still believed these would be the last to be bombed, but maybe Hamas correctly exercised counterintuitive logic). Regardless of the class of building in which access to tunnels was situated, if this did present the challenge to the tunnel-system architects I surmise it did, it also helps to explain the present comprehensive bombing campaign which is almost certainly burying a good number of tunnel access ports under tons of rubble. Even if Hamas could muster the heavy equipment necessary to restore access in such cases, the location of that activity would be given away quite readily.

Collateral benefits to inhuman Israel’s bombing campaign would be the death of the humans on the surface, plus the imprisonment of any fighters caught inside, who might not know which exits had been blocked, and would be less likely to escape even if they did. If Hamas were relying on cell service to communicate in this matter, that has been made unavailable. Or maybe they got out. But no tactical tunnel advantage would persist.
