Let this Canuck clear up some American misconceptions and facts on guns in Canada.
Long guns and shotguns have not yet been banned. Since hunting is a popular hobby in Canada, many citizens here own long guns. You have to pass a hunter safety course and you can then purchase a hunting rifle. As of this writing, hunting rifles are not banned, though this too could change depending on the mood of this corrupt Trudeau government. As far as I know, the Amerindian population of Canada has no restrictions on hunting rifles and hunting in general.
Multi-round military style rifles such as AR15’s, C4’s, etc. are banned, as are handguns, though permits can be issued for hand guns under certain conditions.

Having Western names is common among Indians in Saskatchewan. . Depending on the tribe, some reserves can have the majority of people with the last name Sinclair and with a tribe a few miles away having the last name Harper. Or Thomas.

Some may have some white blood in them, but the name is not indicative. Usually the last name of one of the priests at the school who was teaching their children was taken. So an Indian with the last name of Sanderson might not have a drop of European blood in him.

How about two books? One fiction, the other (allegedly) non-fiction?

First, the non-fiction effort: John C. Cremony, Life Among the Apaches.

I say this book is “allegedly” true because historians complain Cremony’s account is not without flaws (don’t they always?). Read it and judge for yourself.

As for the fiction book, I am puzzled as to why no one has mentioned it yet: Flashman and the Redskins by George MacDonald Fraser.

This covers the Apaches and part of the Indian Wars (it ends with Custer’s Last Stand in 1876). The book is fiction, but G.M. Fraser is known for putting a fair amount of historical research into his works. The result is an entertaining read and a history lesson.

(While the central character [Flashman] is fictional, most of the historical figures and central events in his books are historically accurate. The extensive footnotes at the back of each book tell you which parts conform with known history and which do not.)

If you like the style of Flashman and the Redskins, Fraser did a whole series of books covering world events of the 1820s up until the dawn of the twentieth century. You could do worse if you are looking to fill a few hours with some light reading.

The Flashman books are (or at least were) enormously popular. I cannot think why the Redskins entry in the series has not been mentioned before, unless the series has fallen out of favour in the present-day.

(Of course, the Flashman series is not known for its political correctness, dealing [for the most part] in the unvarnished truth when it comes to how people behaved in days gone by. Perhaps people dare not be seen reading such candid books in the dreary, ponderously Politically Correct 2020s?)

Long guns and shotguns have not yet been banned. Since hunting is a popular hobby in Canada, many citizens here own long guns. You have to pass a hunter safety course and you can then purchase a hunting rifle. As of this writing, hunting rifles are not banned, though this too could change depending on the mood of this corrupt Trudeau government. As far as I know, the Amerindian population of Canada has no restrictions on hunting rifles and hunting in general.
Multi-round military style rifles such as AR15’s, C4’s, etc. are banned, as are handguns, though permits can be issued for hand guns under certain conditions.

Wrong. There are two categories of firearms in the Canadian Firearm law. Unrestricted and Restricted. There is a 3rd category, “prohibited” but that’s another discussion. Previously, Ar15s and its derivatives are restricted, meaning you can use them at the shooting range only. Recently, the Canadian government changed it to “prohibited”. Now, under the restricted category, most firearms are handguns.

In the unrestricted category, no gun registration is necessary and you have a whole slew of choices. From bolt action rifle, semi auto rifles, and shotguns. Since the banning of Ar15s, unrestricted semi auto AR15 lookalike are available. Functions like an Ar15, takes Ar15 magazines except the barrel is longer and a one piece receiver instead of a lower and an upper receiver in Ar15s.
