Andrew I think you hit the nail on the head. However, I think you missed one important point. A US military move in Ukraine is likely to happen just days before the midterm election. Biden could use a war with Russia to declare a state of emergency and postpone the upcoming election. The question is can they find a legitimate excuse to use to get the American people to support the war. On the Russian side of things I wouldn’t expect any major escalations until after the G20 meeting in Bali. The ground still has yet to freeze. I think that summit will be fascinating. Moreover, I’m getting the feeling based on sentiments from Ramzan Kadyrov that maybe there’ll be another partial mobilization soon. Maybe after the New Year. Ukraine is just a sideshow, the real conflict is between Russia and NATO. Both NATO and Russia want to get at each other but neither wants to be the one to start this direct war. Don’t forget the Russian ultimatum to NATO late last year which NATO refused to comply with. Obviously that means war between the two is inevitable. Russia has long been preparing for this and its leadership is not stupid. So if it issued that ultimatum, and Russia probably knew what the response would be, then that can be considered as a declaration of war of each side on the other. Presumably Russia gamed this many times and thinks it has a reasonable chance in a war against NATO, although in terms of population numbers, finances, industry, and military strength that would seem unlikely. In terms on nuclear weapons they’re about on par. Perhaps Russia wants to draw NATO into the Ukraine and fight it there rather than on broader fronts all over Europe.

I am not surprised that the attention is shifting to the Romanian border. This is where the US/NATO missile shield is based, which is the main complaint by Russians, and they have repeatedly demanded that this shield be dismantled. So if US doesn’t comply Russia sure will try to use force to remove it. The deployment of American troops there could be preparation for a pre-emptive strike, or to bolster Romanian defences.

Events have overtaken that by now old news with great rapidity and I have forgotten the details so let’s revise them, as they were presented in the form of a proposed “agreement” rather than an “ultimatum”.

Article 1: the parties should not strengthen their security at the expense of Russia’s security;

Article 2: the parties will use multilateral consultations and the NATO-Russia Council to address points of conflict;

Article 3: the parties reaffirm that they do not consider each other as adversaries and maintain a dialogue;

Article 4: the parties shall not deploy military forces and weaponry on the territory of any of the other states in Europe in addition to any forces that were deployed as of May 27, 1997;

Article 5: the parties shall not deploy land-based intermediate- and short-range missiles adjacent to the other parties;

Article 6: all member States of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization commit themselves to refrain from any further enlargement of NATO, including the accession of Ukraine as well as other States;

The Ukrainian military is suffering horrendous casualties. Hospitals are overflowing with the grievously wounded. Families of the dead and wounded are intimidated into silence. Press-gangs are being used to force people into conscription. The mood on the streets couldn’t be any more cynical.

Sadly, it’s also entirely consistent with the type of dire circumstances that would breed a dirty-bomb option.

But it’s how they cope. Suicide missions are tough.

The Russian military is not even breathing hard.

The Russian tactic during this stage of demilitarizing the Ukraine has been to use their so-called maneuver groups to draw Ukrainian forces into slaughter boxes where they are decimated by ATGM’s, artillery and drones. Drones are being effectively used to harass them day and night no matter where they are, with some being operated by highly motivated Iranians who are gaining invaluable operational experience. I’ll leave the implications for you to ponder.

And then there are so many other dimensions to this conflict other than military that portend doom for the Neo-con regime in Kiev.

The only real question is how much longer the regime can last.

That could explain Israeli reluctance to attack Russland.

Whether he can win this war against NATO or not is an open-ended matter for now. Since it probably will never come down to a nuclear exchange, it all hinges on how much capacity for a protracted conflict does Russia really have. By all counts Russia is only warming up, while NATO is already spent. Europe is done. Europe has neither the resources nor the capacity to wage any kind war. If America joins the fray in Ukraine, China may make their move on Taiwan. America would be in chaos and in a two-front war against Eurasia. The Chinese would decimate the US Pacific fleet. I wouldn’t rule China out in a global conflict, but they definitely won’t send troops to Europe to fight. They could do plenty to harass the American jackals in their own backyard. As with anything only time will tell.

Having lived in Russia for roughly 8 years I can tell you Putin is much more moderate than the Western MSM portrays him. I’ve listened to many of his speeches in the original Russian and they all seemed level headed. Russian chess players are known to be painfully methodical and don’t give into rage making stupid moves. He seems to play the geopolitical game the same way. Physically, the US already is in Ukraine, along with the rest of NATO, via privateers and “volunteers”. “Officially” (or “formally”, as perhaps it would be better put) would mean if they sent in actual active troops, accompanied by the public admission that they did so.

I agree that the anglophone countries are the only countries that are both insanely zealous and able to do something about the situation in Ukraine.

But the UK is in a terrible shape right now economically, so I’m not sure they’d be able to sustain deploying a significant number of troops abroad long enough to make a difference.

Canada, Australia and New Zealand all have to worry about China as well. I think that’s their priority over anything in Europe. That doesn’t mean they couldn’t contribute even more resources than they’re doing now, to help the US in Ukraine, but I doubt it would be in manpower.
