The argument against Trump is that he did very little to change the situation in his four years in office (he did nominate three Supreme Court justices who voted to reverse Roe v. Wade), made abysmally bad staffing decisions and will be eight years older in 2025 (78) than he was in 2017. While I readily admit that I have no viable alternative, supporting Trump at this point reminds me of Samuel Johnson’s characterization of second marriages as the triumph of hope over expectations.

I commented to my wife the other day that nothing shows the decline of the country more than the fact that Trump could be the GOP guy again in 2024. He was clearly not up to the job but that no longer seems to mean anything to a lot of people.

That was one reason I supported Trump, since he did not need to grovel for money (even though I thought he was only the best of a bad lot). He proved to be not up to the job, so we need an alternative. Maybe someone will come out of the woodwork, as Trump did in 2016.

Assuming Trump runs again and if–and that’s a big “if”– he is re-elected, I would have a real concern that since they failed to get rid of him via “the system”, the malevolent oligarchs who run this country might arrange to have him whacked. Trump’s main strength was always contained in the three-legged platform consisting of reducing immigration, reducing American military commitments overseas and making things better for the working class. Unfortunately, his personality is his fatal flaw–the wrong person with the right message. The question is: Who is the RIGHT person? I don’t know and frankly I do not see anyone on the horizon who fits the bill.
