In the 1950s, I grew up in the heart of New York City and had a remarkable amount of contact with Native Americans. As you might expect, I never actually met one in those years. What I had in mind was all the time I spent at the local RKO and other movie theaters watching Hollywood westerns. They were, of course, filled with Indians, and in those films, we — and I don’t mean the 12-year-old Tom Engelhardt, but the blue coats, the stage coach drivers and their passengers, the cowboys, and the pioneers I identified with — were regularly ambushed by those Indians. In the end, with rare exceptions, the natives predictably fell as they circled the wagon train or stagecoach or attacked those cavalrymen, whooping and shooting their arrows. They went down, naturally enough, before the implacable power of “our” weaponry, “our” marksmanship. And here’s the thing: they deserved it. After all, they were attacking us. We never ambushed them. They, that is, were “the invaders” and we, invariably, the aggressed upon.

All of this came to my mind when, in the midst of the 2018 midterm election campaign, Donald Trump labeled as “invaders” a caravan of desperate refugees, including women and small children fleeing their violent, impoverished lands (which the U.S. had a significant hand in making so) for asylum or refuge in this country. And then, of course, he sent almost 6,000 military personnel to the U.S.-Mexico border to protect us (and twiddle their thumbs).

I was reminded then of that celluloid past because Donald Trump, who is only a couple of years younger than me and undoubtedly grew up in the same movie world, felt — I suspect — so comfortable lambasting those refugees as invaders exactly because the term fit perfectly the “history” we had learned in our mutual childhoods. His claim was, in fact, a twenty-first-century version of the way, in our youth, the history of this country was regularly turned on its head, making the desperate and invaded into the nefarious and invasive. And, in truth, even without the helping hand of Donald Trump, that version of our history has never really ended, as TomDispatch regular Aviva Chomsky shows today. Native Americans are still being treated as if they were the invaders in what was once their own land and, like that caravan from Latin America, slapped down for it. Let her tell you how what she calls the DNA industry and various parts of our government, local and national, have been working overtime to recreate, after a fashion, the movie world of my childhood.

It’s not like natives from Argentina are native to Canada. The article’s fallacy would be as egregious as the author would describe Spaniard as being natives to Finlandia only because both Finns and Spaniards are native Europeans.

  2. The gentle…tolerant HOPI were known to bash the fucking brains out of their fellow Native “Americans” next door and eat the brain pulp….”YUMMY YUMMY YUMMY….WEEZ GOTZ INJUN MANCORN IN MY INJUN TUMMY!!!”….In ancient Southwest Hopi Society….for several thousand years….the NUMBER 1 TOP OF THE CHARTS HOPI POP TUNE was:”YUMMY YUMMY YUMMY…I GOT INJUN MANCORN IN MY INJUN TUMMY!!!”

And this Hopi TOP OF THE CHARTS HOPI POP TUNE…..was plagarized by an English bubble gum Pop group..I think the Archies…..and made it to a 1960’s TOP OF THE CHARTS HIT:”YUMMY YUMMY YUMMY….I GOT ❤️ LOVE IN MY TUMMY!!!!….AND THE FEELING IS SO GOOD!!!”

  3. Does anyone doubt that Noam and Avi Chomsky…as does the rootless cosmopolitan filth Steven Pinker…..harbor open GENOCIDAL INTENT towards the HISTORIC NATIVE BORN WHITE CHRISTIAN WORKING CLASS MAJORITY?

  4. I used to see plenty of First Nations people in Toronto. That is, until they flooded it with third world street-poopers from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Syria, etc. Now the only Indians you see are the unibrowed kind.

Canada’s First Nations actually hit a milestone a while back when their birthrate went above replacement to put them on an exponential growth curve. Our immigration policy could have been tailored to help them rise from a small fraction of the population to about 10-15%.

Instead, they are now doomed to be an insignificant minority in a sea of Indians, Chinese, Pakis, Arabs and Bantu who are entirely bereft of colonial guilt.

(((those who are running things))) never gave a sh#t about the natives

all the shame and guilt they had for whites was nothing but lies.

  6. @szopen

I would say a tighter comparison is claiming that Algerians or Turks have an ancestral claim on France and Germany. Which they are currently in full pursuit of, in much the same manner.

  7. Clearly, the concept of pure justice produces an infinite regression to absurdity. Centuries ago, wise men invented statutes of limitations to justify the rejection of such pure justice, in the interest of preventing continual disorder. The law zealously defends property rights, but only relatively recent property rights. Drawing a line after an arbitrary time has elapsed may be unjust, but the alternatives are worse.

We are all the descendants of thieves, and the world’s resources are inequitably distributed. But we must begin the journey to tomorrow from the point where we are today. We cannot remake the past. We cannot safely divide the wealth equitably among all peoples so long as people reproduce at different rates. To do so would guarantee that our grandchildren and everyone else’s grandchildren, would have only a ruined world to inhabit.

To be generous with one’s own possessions is quite different from being generous with those of posterity. We should call this point to the attention of those who from a commendable love of justice and equality, would institute a system of the commons, either in the form of a world food bank, or of unrestricted immigration. We must convince them if we wish to save at least some parts of the world from environmental ruin.

It seems to me that people who claim to apologize for the sins of their nation never are. They are accusing others within their society, their political opponents, for present political advantage.

  8. @szopen

Incomprehensibly stupid. Analogies are odious but yours doesn’t even make sense. Oh, OK. An orange is like a general accounting table. Because it’s round.

  9. Every person living in America when Columbus found it was occupying land originally occupied by someone else. If you were born in America you are a native American. American Indians are no more native American than anyone else. These are facts.

  10. So, now liberals are nativists. Good to know. Does that mean that calling Asian and African immigrants invaders is OK? Just asking…

  11. @Native American

Larger point:THE HISTORIC NATIVE BORN WHITE AMERICAN WORKING CLASS MAJORITY is under no obligation to allow themselves to be voted into a violently persecuted White Racial Minority within the borders of the US by the Democratic Party Voting Bloc in Hindu India that Aviva Chomsky wants to import into the US……

  12. Renoman says:

It’s not “their Land”. Just because you ran through the woods before I did doesn’t make it yours, if you want to hold land you have to be able to defend it. That’s the way it is now and always has been. As for the Roads, schools, Hospitals and refrigeration, you’re welcome now shut up and live in the present, we’re not goin back.

  13. @War for Blair Mountain

So fucking what? is that your defence for the genocide? Then i have a surprise for you mr NPC… We can turn the whole thing on its head and start mentioning the crimes of your terrorist regime, murdering, raping and otherwise unpleasantry. there is no tribe on this earth that is near your crimes the last 300 yrs.. so your weak assed deflection only show us how weak and pathetic you NPC`s are..

You are part of the problem NPC!

You sound like every racist European settler massacring coloniser everywhere playing the victims – including the newest one born out of terrorism and ethnic cleansing

  15. @Per/Norway

So fucking what? is that your defence for the genocide?

most Indians died from disease. did you ever her Europeans blaming Asians for bringing the plague to Europe? Per wiki, the plague was estimated to have killed about 50 million Europeans – 30 to 60% of the population, as much as 80% of the population of Italy and southern France and Spain.

sounds like sarcasm but if not, you probably should have some integrity and not use any products invented by white men. That will fix them good.

  16. @obwandiyag

    Incomprehensibly stupid.

    indeed, you are

    @Per/Norway

Yet you have no proof for the obviously wrong “genocide” of stone age, violent Indians. The little dummies are everywhere and have a complete free ride with plenty of taxpayers cash to stay loaded on.

But hey, maybe you’re trying the laughable college freshman, ‘infected blankets’ Marxist crap?
    you said:
“there is no tribe on this earth that is near your crimes the last 300 yrs.”

LOL Except you cannot present any proof. Like I said, dumb college freshman crap.

“a caravan of desperate refugees, including women and small children fleeing their violent,”

Aw, got to bring up the “women and children” , Which only proves the speaker could care less about “our women and children” and in fact wants to eliminate them in favor of their du’ jour whim.

When i hear “women and children “dis-igneously spoken by democrats and liberals, as some demand for compassion , I know how Goering felt when he heard the word “Culture”. And rightfully so.

  19. @Wally

whitey made the North American continent safe for the masses and all these groups like jews that came to take advantage of that now point the finger at him

its odd that all of these suddenly virtuous, morally outraged people dont just do the right thing, the morally consistent thing, and leave

  20. Another unimpressive swipe at white America by a pampered, crypto-Israeli living in the US and enjoying all the fruits of our extraordinary, European-derived civilization.

North America was mostly empty when Europeans first sailed here five centuries years ago.

The existing inhabitants in these sparsely-populated lands had no written language, no metallurgy, not even the wheel. They were a collection of illiterate, often-warring, stone age tribes.

European-derived whites conquered these peoples. But we now give them full and equal rights inside our prosperous, technologically-advanced civilization. Native Americans are free to integrate and join us. At the same time, they also enjoy certain privileges as Native Americans.

As for the meso-Americans now pouring into Estado Unidos from south of the Rio Grande, they have no ancestral claims to America. These needy gatecrashers are partly Spanish but largely descended from Aztecs and Mayans and other MesoAmericans; all of whom dwelled in Central America and Mexico before and after Europeans created advanced societies on this continent.

These MesoAmericans have their own countries. Why can’t they make them great?–or even livable?

This question needs to be addressed.

Is it all the white man’s fault, Ms Chomsky?

Why are these ‘migrants’ unable to manage their own societies?

Might it not be very risky (suicidal?) for us to allow these low-IQ malcontents to crash into ours?

The orderly, high-achieving civilization called America was settled by, and created by, white, European-derived peoples. It has taken centuries to get where we are. This is our civilization. And we intend to keep it.

Modern America is far greater than any culture that preceded it or that now exists south of it.

The United States is ours to keep or to lose.

We know whose side Ms. Chomsky is on. Like her over-rated father, Aviva invariably pretends to always be on the side of ‘the oppressed’? This is kosher malarkey.

In fact, Aviva is invariably on the side of any faction that will erode white (male, Christian) dominance inside the US.

Chomsky is a privileged and protected Jewish subversive, doing her usual work.

When will hypocritical Aviva turn her attention to–and take real action against–the ongoing genocide being conducted by her co-ethnics in Palestine?

    When?

    Never. She is a fraud.
