A warning to the West. A warning to white America of what the Woke Terror leads to. [Columbia professor who fled communism resigns, says university is becoming communist: Pressured to admit transgender student, The College Fix, November 6, 2019]:

A Romania-born academic says he recently left his tenured position at Columbia University because the Ivy League school is “on its way toward full blown communism,” according to a Romanian TV interview translated by a Romanian-American immigrant.

Prof. Andrei Serban, an award-winning director, complained about the increasing social justice demands he faced in the theater department in the interview, which aired on Romania’s TVR1 Oct. 26. One prominent example he gave: pressure to admit a transgender applicant who auditioned as Juliet from “Romeo and Juliet.”

Andy Ionescu, a native Romianian speaker who immigrated to the United States in 1999, told The College Fix in a Twitter message that he translated the interview.

He said it was likely the first time that Serban made his resignation publicly known. Columbia still lists Serban as an active professor. Media relations did not respond to an email from The Fix, and Serban’s department did not return a voicemail. Serban did not respond to an email.

The TV host expresses incredulity at multiple points in the interview, seemingly shocked that the American higher education system is headed toward communism. Serban fled from the ideology, which ruled Romania for much of the 20th century.

Serban says in the interview that after a faculty member retired, the remaining professors in the department were called in to a meeting to discuss a replacement.

It was at this meeting that the dean of the art school told them that there were “too many white professors, too many heterosexual men,” and that it would be best to hire a minority or a woman, or a gay man.

Serban, who was the director of the hiring committee, says that he was told that it could not be someone like him because he is a man that has been “married, a heterosexual man who has children.”

The professor says that he then asked if they could choose a straight white male if the most qualified candidate happened to be so, and was promptly told that they could not. “I felt like I was living under communism again,” he said.

A second incident involving a male-to-female transgender student was the final impetus for Serban to resign, according to the translated video.

While reviewing applicants to the theater school, the transgender student prepared Juliet’s monologue from “Romeo and Juliet.”

Serban says that he could not believe that this person could become Juliet. After his colleagues expressed displeasure with him for stating as much, Serban resigned, saying that he could not violate his principles.

According to his faculty bio, Serban is an accomplished theater and opera producer who served as the director of the Romanian National Theater and won a Tony Award.

All the bad guys in this story are white. All the good guys are Transylvanian. It’s like Dracula in reverse.

The beating and later murder of one Muhlaysia Booker in Dallas this spring may have been extreme, but at least many blacks still recognize sick as sick. The black defense attorney for the first crime wants to call the victim by the “deadname” Pierre, to emphasize that a fight between two men is a different animal than a man attacking a woman.

    The white prosecutor says no:

That’s a boomer take. There’s nothing with communism which is inherently anti-white. Much of Eastern Europe had much healthier social values during communism. Neoliberalism, under jewish aegis, has been the poison to the chalice. I’m no friend of communism as a system, but naming it is a sign of cowardice. The good professor wants to keep his job, and that’s fine, but it shouldn’t prevent the rest of us from being clear-headed about the disease. And it sure as hell isn’t “communism” or “cultural marxism”. Those are misnomers.

The Berlin Wall fell thirty years ago and a truck driver where I work, who was a kid on the Other Side back then, told me straight up they were freer then than any American is now.

I mean they were freer under the old regime than we are now. And it’s strange for fellows like him, old enough at the time to remember how the Warsaw Pact imprisoned sex deviants to see them getting special privileges on his dime now in this country.

This has to be a strategy to drive us nuts because “transgender” cannot count for more than .001% of the population. There is no “proletariat” of yoyos.

    Something’s got to give.

  8. Andrei Serban is the visionary stage director who, back in the 1970s at LaMaMa/Great Jones Rep in the East Village in NYC, created the epic Greek tragedy masterpiece known as “Fragments of a Trilogy”, which was a multi-night theater experience consisting of inter-related, extremely physical, highly environmental, Grotowski- and Artaud-flavored productions of “Medea,” “Elektra,” and “Trojan Women”, all performed in Ancient Greek, and a lot of it set to ancient-sounding music (scored by Elizabeth Swados if memory serves). It got revived several times in the 1980s and 90s, and went on various world tours, so there were opportunities to see it in different generational incarnations. I think I must have seen it five times or so, over the years.

It was one of the most shocking things I’ve ever seen in my life, and I have both seen, and created myself, many shocking things.

Forget for a moment the endless tiresome drivel caused by the POC juggernaut and the inane Great Awokening hooey. Andrei Serban is a man of great vision, great expertise, and singular accomplishments. He is a person whose considered artistic opinions are not to be disregarded on a whim. It is ridiculous that a bunch of unaccomplished nobodies would even dare to speak to him without the utmost deference, let alone denounce him. Anybody is free to disagree with anybody else if they’re all serious; but none of these Woke types are observably serious.

  9. Since you mention the “Great Replacement,” I want to mention that France Culture radio has a special report online about the phrase and its originator, Renaud Camus, and the title of the report is “Le grand remplacement, un virus français.” French radio is infinitely more adult and intelligent than American radio, but unfortunately it is just as PC.

What the left is aspiring to is far worse than mere ‘communism’. It is total societal collapse.

I draw a distinction between men ( or women) who are homosexual and what is going on now. No one cares that Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, happens to be gay but if he announced company earnings or the debut of a new iPhone looking like Rupaul his career at Apple would be over. But this is exactly where the left is taking us but it is also what will save us.

No one can take seriously people parading their sexual perversions ( gay or straight) in public. Try that in the USSR, Cuba or Mao’s China and one would quickly learn that ‘communists’ don’t tolerate that kind of behavior. They also don’t believe in giving indulgences to criminals just because they are a negro. I would rather live under communism that where the Democratic Party is heading.

The main problem is they will never work, because it is against Human Nature.
Someone will want more of the goods produced than than their Fair Share, and others will want to do less than their fair share of Work. Simply put this is Greed, and it has destroyed every government in history.
Greed is responsible for the difference in distribution of wealth in Capitalism.
I can’t remember the name for it, but there used to be an acceptable maximum percent of profit a business could make and anything over that was unethical.
In a perfect world, everyone would give, to the best of their ability, not all would have the same abilities, and take only what they need. This will never happen until the Second coming of Jesus Christ.

    @Justvisiting

Justvisiting, I’ve heard immigrants say a thousand times in a thousand ways that the America they imagined they were getting is not the America they actually got. I don’t have a distilled summary anecdote, but there’s something of the sense that they know they’re being handled. They’re in something of a box, too. They’re grateful to be out of the shithole they came from—but they won’t be ass-kissing the Statue of Liberty either.

I’d be damned grateful if my country, America, would get out of the human trafficking game altogether, whether it’s inordinate loosening of immigration laws to fatten labor-hungry elites, or wars of choice that create refugees.

  21. We are merely seeing the fruit of the seeds planted in the Sixties. In the name of sexual freedom, deviance and degeneracy are the norm. The abandonment of epistemic certainty and truth has led to harmful trends like the whole self esteem nonsense that flourished in the educational system for a time. And don’t get me started on the post-modern charade.

An entire generation was severely crippled by parents who coddled them. Who lavished extravagant praise on them and kept telling them they were special and unique instead of teaching them that real self esteem comes from accomplishment and hard work.

I admit I have little sympathy with christians who bemoan the state of the culture. I want to shout at them, “What did you expect? You subscribed to a false doctrine of escapism (the whole rapture/end times bullshit) and abandoned the culture. You sent your kids to schools which were openly hostile to your faith and values and you wonder why your kids turned away from the faith of their fathers.”

My nature as a cranky, anti-social SOB would have me believe there is no hope. But I cannot believe the Holy Spirit would suffer the imputation to rest on His Holy Name that He was unable to convert the world. Some people say we are in a post-christian era. I like to think that we are in a pre-christian era. Who knows how good it could get?

What you don’t understand is the patience of the white race. They are the slowest to anger and strike back. Do NOT mistake that for cowardice or enjoyment of abuse.

If you ever see white people finally angered enough to go to war, you’ll see that they really bring it, and not just with the heart but with the mind. No one out guns Uncle Sam. White peoples have many centuries of warfare as a tradition. They won’t lay down forever. Watch what happens if impeachment overturns or nullifies 63 million votes. Do the math.

BUT Professor Serban picked a very odd place to draw his line in the sand.

If he is familiar with theater history he is aware that in Shakespeare’s time and for decades after, all female rolls in English plays were played by males, in particular young males. In fact, many plays of that time, including those of Shakespeare contain joking references to this, i.e., when Hamlet is discussing the current state of theater in London with the company of players who will be performing “The Mousetrap”. In all early performances of “Romeo and Juliet”, Juliet was played by a barely post-pubescent young man.

Juliet a Muslim in a hijab? Yes! I like it! Then, instead of committing suicide, she gets stoned to death in an honor killing by an enraged mob of muslims led by her father. Meanwhile, in another part of town, Romeo is attacked and killed by a woke mob of minorities for being a cis-gendered member of the racist white patriarchy who was plotting to oppress a muslim minority female by getting her pregnant with a white predator fetus. Then, in the closing scene, Romeo’s parents crawl across the stage groveling before the muslims and other minorities while profusely apologizing for their white privilege and the despicably racist conduct of their evil white offspring. Their shame is so great they immediately commit suicide to atone for their evil whiteness.

  58. TBH, Andrei Serban’s biography on Wikipedia mentions he was living, as a child, near Gradina Icoanei. This is a beautiful, extremely central place in Bucharest, bordered by 2-stories historical buildings. It’s the sort of place that would exist if Boston’s Louisburg Square buildings would be transplanted in DC’s Dupont Circle. All the buildings in that area were confiscated by the Socialist authorities in 1945 (when Nazi collaborators were punished) or 1948 (when all factories and banks were nationalized, and their owners proscribed). The reason why Serban would have been able to play in Gradina Icoanei in the fifities would be that his parents got on well with the new Stalinist authorities.

Similarly, he moved to New York, after being able to move in and out of Romania, at a time when the border guards would sit facing the inland, preventing escapees from crossing to “freedom”. As late as 1969, he had the freedom of movement my grandparents could not even imagine. I can only infer that De-Stalinization did not harm his position.

After two decades of Communist privilege, he has the audacity to complain about Communism.

This is too stupid a comment to respond to, with all of the obvious, well rehashed, and otherwise universally known contradicting information by the Right (and the elite Left), other than to make this disclaimer.

If your comment represents a view that attempts to conclusively contradict what you state to be the perspective relegated to “boomers”, then your generation needs to be eliminated in favor of “boomers” for its willful or naive but unquestionable stupidity so that we can survive.

    Yeah, Romanians are brilliant.

And they never lie for pay or anything. Or make up crazy nonsense for pay either.

But you fools quote it. Because it supports your inbred prejudices. Not because it has any semblance of reality.

An impression of you aping our logic, in our language, while attempting to castigate us in an effort to stop us from rejecting you: Ooga booga booga.

In human language and thought: its obvious to us (and should be to you) that we own you.

Your protests are those of an animal whose range is limited by his life support apparatus and who, should we free him, would immediately die or, as an option in your case, revert to a new form that is much worse. Better to allow us to decide your fate than to constantly gnash at the hand. You just might force something that you didn’t bargain for, even if you believe that you want it, and that wouldn’t have otherwise been chosen for you by the people responsible for your existence in your current form.

  71. @Hibernian

First, I did not comment on his sympathies. A majority of voters have sympathies similar of those of sports fans, reaching the same levels of madness and based on the same nonsense that should not matter for an adult. In Romania, just yesterday, lots of poor people voted for the party that will cut state support for the unemployed, elderly and children. It is quite likely that the beneficiaries of Socialism hated the leaders and the party, if only because they thought they deserve even more of the spoils.

You worked with people like this Serban guy, nor with real people. In contrast to real people, directors, actors, writers, poets and other similar parasites happens to combine astuteness with a long history of being paid for what they say. People who play Juliet do not become Juliet. They merely get paid to pretend as well as they can, that they are Juliet, or they came under fire in Sarajevo Airport, or they have evidence on Rafael Cruz killing JFK. A farmer is paid if he brings in than many tons of grapes, or he milks that many cows. But a director is paid based on how much bullshit he makes up.

So why would a “refugee” struggle when telling you that he hates the Communists? It’s just words, and they get paid to say words all the time.

In addition to the gibs that a “refugee” from Eastern Europe could get, there’s the opposite angle. If there Serbans would have failed to prove they are victims of Communism, they would have been extradited. Not only they would have to return to Romania, but they would likely land in jail for breaking the rules of their exit visa. They would lose their precious Gradina Icoanei monument-house, with nothing to gain in exchange.

So why would the Serban tell you that they liked Communism? Why would they even abstain from explaining detail how much they hated it. You don’t need two brains to understand where their statements would go.

In other news, 99% of prostitutes detained by the police claim they were forced by their pimp. Even street women can “navigate paperwork jungles”, when gibs are within reach.

I suggest that all the inventions of the white male be taken away from everyone who discriminates against white people. They despise the culture, music, art and literature created by the white race so let them live without the conveniences. No phones, cars, washing machines/dryers, hair dryers, internet, the idiot box TV and so on and on ad infinitum. In any case, remove the white race and within a short time there will be total chaos.

Hundreds of years of sending their strongest fighters to die in ridiculous wars has skewed the white race. What remains are mostly the watered-down offspring or descendants of those who wouldn’t/couldn’t/didn’t fight in the past. Think about that for a bit.

    WTF are you talking about?

You think because whites waged war on one another, it made them weaker?

Holy shit, what a stupid concept.

When Napoleon sent his best into Russia where most of them died, he made the French people shorter up until the present day.  Lots of the European elites died in WWI and did not pass on whatever had put them on top; there’s no visible marker for this like height, but we’re seeing it in things like reaction times slowing.

The past century, century and a half in the West has been dysgenic.

If anything, I would tie that to the fact that we’ve moved away from the active, spartan lifestyle of a century ago.

The draft took care of all those concerns. They weren’t pulling ‘elite’ out of anywhere. They were dragging conscripts off the street and putting them in uniform.

Maybe the Mayans/Incans had it right. Pray to a big god and throw peasants to their death. Blood sacrifice is obviously much better for the gene pool.

I’m in full agreement with you, Augustus. Affirmative action’s indeed an admission of incompetence, and incompetence means failure. This is just what’s been happening in higher education, and the result’s been the job by job the nation slides and grows less competent in all areas. This indeed will lea to collapse and failure. Yes, NEVER surrender your 2nd Amendment rights, and any weapons you legally possess .. It could save your life someday.

  78. Acting “chops” aside, weren’t most of Shakespeare’s plays originally performed by all-male, theater troupes? You know, on account of the whole, 16th century, “women are second-class citizens” thing?
    Downvote as you like.

  79. @Jim in Jersey

I’d much rather that we “sterilize” the most-criminal 5% by incarceration during their effective reproductive lives, sterilize another 10% by making them prove their economic self-sufficiency before they get to have children of their own, and bias reproduction strongly toward the top tiers of people at least 3 generations from any immigrant status.

As a rule, there should be NO second-generation welfare children.  If you were raised on public assistance, you should have to prove you can build a stand-alone family unit before making babies… and keep it going while raising them.  That would eliminate the generational problems, especially in “the community”.

It’s well known that a large percentage of prostitutes were forced into this trade.

My co-workers, or bosses as the case may be, from Eastern Europe, universally held views of the US domestic situation consistent with an overall conservative world view. When you work with or for someone on the night shift, or on a military deployment, you get to know them pretty well. That’s not to say that there might not have been an occasional closet socialist among them.

I was born and lived in the totalitarian regime of NK communist-flavor courtesy of an east european state under soviet rule. Guess the country. Andrei Serban took this particular course of action because of one of the two main possible reasons: 1) he is all setup for retirement in RO and the job at ivy league was a drag at this point. Maybe he wants to use his renowed name and skills for touring with a group of highly skilled professionals and do the thing he enjoys most. All departments in university or college setup are filled with backstabbers, cowards, snitches that would sell you in a heart beat for their own survival at this point. Money is tight nowadays and if you just attempt to piss against the wind you are done. In the past they would sell you for money, material advantages and promotions. Budget cuts combined with stealth recession lowered the standards and we are here. The american folk is scared by the spectre of the fema camps because he read the true gulag stories from ussr. 2) Andrei Serban is the scarred for life soul that all of us that lived there those times are. This means most of the people minus imbeciles, retards and very low iq ones. When the commie shit show was brought to an abrupt end there was nobody to pay for the damage. We were told to never forget and that time will heal. The time does not heal, it helps you forget but not if the damage is so deep into your conscience. And we were told that, by the way, we cannot formarly indict communism. It was acknowledged that we were victims but the best thing we could do for us was to figure out our next steps in life. Also, al of a sudden the hideous religious head showed up asking us to forgive our abusers. The beneficiaries of the totalitarian regime, the secret service who propped up the system and the commie leadership became business class and us the victims of the commie system moved into the new position of victims of wild west capitalism. Every minute folk is leaving that country 30 years after the fall of the shit system. We lost and we still lose. Because no guilt and no wrong doing has been properly identified, because more than a few hundred thousand people died and millions were denied chances, because abuse way the way of life, Andrei Serban had enough. If that is the case, I salute him! We are millions and we are quiet. We do not forget and will never forgive! Amen!

I don’t think you understand what you’re being told.

People like Andrei Serban were privileged. The very fact that they were able to leave is proof of that (believe me, average Romanians could only dream of it).

As such, it would be wise to be more cynical towards what they say.

Well, like you I’d rather there was no public assistance at all. If I’m foolish with my money, it’s no ones fault but my own. If I don’t plan a retirement and put away enough, pay off everything and just live out my years, no government should step in to save me.

Public assistance is no more than charity and the government has no place in charity. As Davey Crockett was reported to have said when a military widow petitioned the state for money, “Its not ours to give”.

    How that for refreshing?

I fought all this hammer and tong in my youth. Later, I realized it would never change and just said ‘keep it coming… the whole thing will break soon enough’.

Now here I am looking toward 60 and it won’t break and it can’t be fixed.

The answer is obvious and it weighs 800 pounds and is shaped like a gorilla.

It’s in the room right now but if I say it, PK will hold my comment forever.

  85. Worse in Britain – colleges, TV, “The Guardian”, party-line political parties.
At least you still have free speech. Our few almost-dissidents (Liddle, Murray, Young) are smeared (and told they are not doing enough by transatlantic “occidental observers”).
We have the Equality Act 2006 & all its totalitarian effects; developed and reinforced by the “Con” government, it enshrines the new state ideology of “equality, diversity, inclusion” which is the Marcuse x Gramsci step-child of “race, gender, class” in the USA.

The people I spoke of were mainly, but not exclusively, Polish. They were almost all (Poles, Romanians, and others) STEM graduates, as I also am. The older ones were engineers, or in some kind of STEM occupation, in their countries of origin. I don’t suppose they could have held these jobs if they were dissidents, but I’m confident that any that were great actors and really liked Communism were rare exceptions, if there were any such at all.

The Romanian family I became acquainted with moved to the US in the mid 80s. The system may have relaxed at least a little by then; it did in some E. European countries, anyway.

Serban was also educated, in the humanities. Education would obviously be a help when you are navigating a jungle of red tape.

Average Romanians might well have only dreamed of leaving. The people I knew from that part of the world were not average. That doesn’t mean they were collaborators.
