According to the Russian news agency Tass, Russia is establishing a strategic air base on the Venezuelan island, La Orchila. Russian sources explain this development as part of the boomerang effect of Trump’s abandonment of the intermediate range missile treaty with Russia.

One supposes that both the Russian and Venezuelan governments understand that this union of the “Russian threat” with the “Venezuelan threat” gives Washington more reason to overthrow the Venezuelan government, a goal to which Washington is already committed. The establishment of the Russian airbase implies a Russian commitment to support Venezuela against Washington.
