Last Monday The Washington Post featured an op-ed by one Edward Price entitled “I didn’t think I’d ever leave the CIA. But because of Trump, I quit.” I must admit that it was refreshing at first to read something in The Post that did not rush to blame BOTH Trump and Vladimir Putin for everything going wrong in the world but, not to worry, evil Russia was indeed cited a bit farther along in the narrative.

Edward “Ned” Price is a likely lad. He has a nice intense look, clean cut, neat tie, good credentials with a degree in international relations from an unidentified college. He decided on a CIA career fifteen years ago and “work[ed] proudly for Republican and Democratic presidents…” Perhaps not temperamentally cut out to be an operations officer or spy, he claims that “as an analyst…[he] became an expert in terrorist groups and traveled the world to help deter and disrupt attacks.”

Price reports that he was quite happy in his work, because both the Bush and Obama administrations “took the CIA’s input seriously.” He was seconded to the White House in 2014 and pats himself on the back for “having [his] analysis presented to the president and seeing it shape events.”

But that was before the wheels came off the car. Per Price, “I watched in disbelief when, during the third presidential debate, Trump casually cast doubt on the high-confidence conclusion of our 17 intelligence agencies, released that month, that Russia was behind the hacking and release of election-related emails.”

Price was also unhappy with Trump’s admittedly odd speech combined with photo op to the CIA staff on his first full day in office but was particularly peeved over the reorganization of the Nation Security Council (NSC), which excluded the CIA director and the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), but included Stephen Bannon, “who cut his teeth as a media champion of white nationalism.” Even though Price was wrong about the DNI and the White House quickly reversed course on including CIA Director Mike Pompeo as the duplicative DNI position might be eliminated, for Price the message was “It [the White House] has little need for intelligence professionals who, in speaking truth to power, might challenge the ‘America first’ orthodoxy that sees Russia as an ally and Australia as a punching bag.”

Towards the end of his apologia, Edward Price noted that his decision had “nothing to do with politics,” before observing how he served “under President George W. Bush, some of whose policies I also found troubling, and I took part in programs that the Obama administration criticized and ended.”

There is inevitably some concluding drivel about intelligence professionals who deliver “the fruits of their labor-sometimes at the risk of life or limb…” being “accorded due deference” by the White house, an amusing commentary from a careerist who clearly spent his time behind a desk.

There are a few things one might say about Price. First of all, his “nothing to do with politics” is pure balderdash. He found Bush policies “troubling” while the clearly more admirable Obama “criticized and ended” the nasty bits. Yes, Bush authorized the use of torture and renditions initially after 9/11 but they were de facto suspended in his second term. And while Bush presented the American people with Iraq, Obama gifted us with Libya and Syria while continuing Afghanistan. And Price was at CIA while the organization was surreptitiously monitoring the Senate Intelligence Committees investigation into its torture program. He was willing to continuing working for the Agency after the spying and the war crime that it was trying to hide was revealed but suddenly found Jesus or a backbone or a conscience (select whichever one applies) only when Trump was elected.

Ned appears to forget that it was Bush who demurred at killing civilians en masse using drones and Obama who has embraced and expanded the practice. Obama also initiated the assassination of U.S. citizens overseas without due process and used the State Secrets Privilege more than all his predecessors combined to block any judicial challenge to his actions. Apparently, Price considered all that to be just fine since it was a liberal Democrat at the controls. And, by the way, Price is on record as having contributed $5,000 to the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee. He is a registered Democrat in the District of Columbia. His characterization of Steve Bannon as a “white nationalist” and mention of the “Russian hack” come straight out of the Hillary Clinton campaign’s playbook and the more recent Democratic Party narrative to explain why it lost the election.

And there’s more. Price’s rapid rise through the Agency ranks came after his assignment to the Obama White House where he worked for deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes and became an administration spokesman on the NSC. That means he was not exactly a highly principled intelligence briefer “speaking truth to power,” which is itself a bullshit feel good expression as the CIA has a long history of trimming facts to please the audience, most particularly the president. Price should do a little background reading on what former leading Agency analysts Robert Gates, John McLaughlin, Michael Morell and John Brennan dissimulated about to make the client in the White House happy.

Ned Price was apparently renowned as a White House apologist working to sell a product to a possibly skeptical audience. He was reportedly a highly regarded spin-meister for administration policies, working a well-cultivated group of media contacts that would replay his analysis and attribute it to “a senior White House official.” The analysis would bounce back and forth until it was picked up and validated by appearance in the mainstream media. That used to be called by some “information management” while others would regard it as propaganda.

And then there are the errors in fact and interpretation that Price provides to make his case against Trump. The alleged “conclusion” regarding Russian hacking of the election was really based on the input of the only two intelligence agencies that have the capability to analyze and trace the origin of a hack – the NSA and the FBI. The FBI had to be pressured into agreeing with the conclusions of the report Price cites and the NSA supported them only with “moderate” confidence, meaning that it recognized that the evidence linking the hack to Russia just wasn’t there. Many former intelligence officers and some in the media have questioned the validity of the report and have demanded to see at least some of the evidence to support its conclusions, which, to this date, has not been produced.

Price’s account of the Trump reorganization of the National Security Council also is incorrect. The reorganization states “The Director of National Intelligence…will attend where issues pertaining to [his] responsibilities and expertise are to be discussed.” So the DNI was included and Price fails to recognize that after the DNI position was created under George W. Bush he or she was to be the intelligence referent and the CIA Director no longer filled that role and was excluded. That practice continued under Obama, which Price ignores even though he worked on the NSC, and he also does not note that the CIA and FBI Directors often have, in fact, joined in on the NSC “Principals” meetings as a courtesy. If the office of DNI is eliminated in the current reorganization, the head of CIA will step up and assume those responsibilities in the new structure, so the intelligence community is not in any sense being pushed out.

Price aside, I don’t know how many, if any, CIA officers have resigned recently either for ethical reasons or out of dislike for Trump. But if some have, I would hope they had better rationalizations for doing so than were produced in the op-ed, which is reduced to anti-Russian sentiment, dismay at government reorganization and longing for the good old days when a liberal Democrat who was able to lie very convincingly was running the show. I would have preferred an Edward Price op-ed explaining how he had resigned over a real issue, like the bipartisan unrelenting pressure on Iran that could easily lead to war, or the continuing practice of drone assassinations and special ops killings, like the recent raid in Yemen in which 15 women and children, including an eight year old, died. Still, even lacking that, I get it. Ned Price just doesn’t like Trump very much.

Trump should do what Kennedy threatened to do before being assassinated. Retire every last one of those CIA degenerates. Shut it down. Expose the fact that they colluded/participated in the 9/11 attacks.
The CIA is NO FRIEND OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. By any measure of decency it is treason writ large.

As for his affirming SIGINT / COMSEC intercepts in the US, since when was CIA ever equipped to comment on that? NSA probably had a low confidence because they would have been the originating agency. My money is on that now deceased Seth Richards having walked out of the DNC with the “intercepted” emails on a flash drive.

So he left his job, so what, this country is full of unemployed people. No one should ever leave a job because once they have it they should stay forever? Like a lot of people he seems to inflate his worth and the value he added. This calls into question the hiring practices they’ve had and exactly who and what they’ve been taking on board. Also, considering the recent Yemen raid, has the US been running a Murder Inc operation? More needs to be looked at regarding the sleazy goings on with this agency. If we really have seventeen intelligence agencies then that seems to be way too many. How much is being spent for all of them and what are we getting for our money? Perhaps a Stansfield Turner type is needed to overhaul things. Since they spy on Congress and the president they’re a danger to democracy in that they possibly-or probably-blackmail them. This particular individual appears to be dishonest and one might wonder about how many people like him are embedded within these agencies.

  14. As a retired CIA operations officer who spent most of his career overseas, in many assignments working against very real terrorists, I am disgusted by this punk desk jockey Price. I saw his type all over the Agency, even (shamefully) an occasional operations officer was a liberal Democrat. Without exception they were men and women utterly lacking character, patriotism (though they would indignantly dispute that), loyalty and honor. They were the first to falsely rat out a fellow officer to curry favor with the politicians running the outfit, the first to jump on the affirmative action and “diversity” bandwagon (which meant that the people doing the heavy lifting in the field were left behind while the whiners and incompetents at headquarters moved ahead) and they sabotaged programs they did not like, such as efforts to fight Communist terrorists. I hope Trump takes a flamethrower to the Agency and clears out every last one of them.

Still worried for Trump, also caught a bit about of Mossad’s Juval Aviv fantasising about impeaching Trump because Russia, the Israelis still order far too many US politicians around to dismiss such talk out of hand, God knows the media would cheer it on. It would be nice if the US intelligence community could have Trump’s back.

A very good sign. If Trump is going to do what is obviously very necessary in the light of the clearly corrupt and politically partisan nature of the US intelligence community, then there are going to be quite a few more like this.

It’s going to take quite a few flushes to clear this one.

“It [the White House] has little need for intelligence professionals who, in speaking truth to power, might challenge the ‘America first’ orthodoxy that sees Russia as an ally and Australia as a punching bag.”

Well if he thinks “America First” is an inappropriate philosophy for a US President, then he shouldn’t be working in the US security business.

If he thinks Russia is actually an enemy of the US for any reason other than foolish US policy choices, then he’s too stupid or deluded to be working anywhere related to foreign policy at a senior level.

And if he’s going to claim that a deliberately misreported telephone conversation is “seeing Australia as a punching bag”, then he’s too dishonest to be trusted anywhere in government.

Actually, this looks like another propaganda show for the fervent ideologues and half-wits.
More on the same from Thierry Meyssan: “The Clinton system to discredit Donald Trump” http://www.voltairenet.org/article195455.html
“The campaign waged against the new President of the United States by the sponsors of Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and the destruction of the Greater Middle East is on-going. … In order to convince US public opinion of the President’s insanity – a man who says that he hopes for peace with his enemies, and wants to collaborate with them in universal economic prosperity – one of the greatest specialists of agit-prop (agitation & propaganda), David Brock, set up an impressive system even before Trump’s investiture… The National Review qualified Brock as «a right-wing assassin who has become a left-wing assassin.»
We can be sure that there is nothing personal between David Brock and the new president. This is all about proper renumeration for a talented Mr. Brock.
Apparently, the rage of the “deciders” has been provoked by the idea of peaceful coexistence. Not profitable. Hence the deafening noise of multi-variant propaganda.
What is so curious is the sudden mobilization of entertainment industry (from soft-porn Madonna to supposedly highbrow Streep and between) against Trump. What are those mighty strings that make the Kimmels and Cloonies and Dunhams and such suddenly discover that the root of all evil is Trump’s attempts at avoiding the WWIII? There is obviously a club, and the membership requires certain flexibility from the members.

In American English, a “hatchet job” usually means a rough, all-out, and possibly unfair attack on someone to destroy him. In the media, an approximate synonym might be “hit piece.”

In more general terms, the expression can also mean a botched job of any kind.

The related expression “hatchet man” for example, was previously used in basketball to identify a scrub, or benchwarmer, whose main job in limited playing time was to commit hard fouls on one of the opposing team’s best players. Later, when the game was changed, hatchet-men evolved into “enforcers

In more general terms, a hatchet-man is a flunky who does the dirty work – a hatchet-job on the opposition.

My take is that Mr. Giraldi’s article about Edward Price is neither hatchet job, nor hit piece, but rather accurate analysis, and pointed criticism.

The CIA is more than a bit like Saturday Night Live – both went on way too longer and neither is really focused on the here and now and neither is particularly funny.

The CIA was created after World War II to counter Soviet intelligence, fight the Communists. The Cold War is long over, we won. The Warsaw Pact has been dissolved. Unless you’re addicted to bad Rambo movies where Johnny Rambo and the American spooks are joining Afghan Jihadists to fight the Russians (there’s more of these idiots than is safe), it’s pretty clear to any sane, healthy Western European American that the Russians should be our allies against 3rd world Islamists. Russian foreign policy in the Middle East is what I want, what Pat Buchanan and now President Trump want us to do.

Russian young woman are also hot.

OK, seems look pretty clear to me so I recommend abolishing the CIA and turning over foreign intelligence including the NSA to regular army, navy, air force intelligence. The American Congress is really owned, more or less, by the Israelis, less by the Israelis than by Jewish American citizens here in the U.S. They say, you know, “jump”, and the American Congress almost to a person says: “how high?”. That’s a very hard nut to crack.

The American media is ignoring a story from London about the abrupt resignation of Robert Hannigan, the head of Britain’s highly secretive Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), which is the codebreaking equivalent of the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA). Hannigan’s resignation on January 23 surprised everyone, with only a few hours’ notice provided to his staff.

The point is that “hatchet job” is not a complimentary term in American English under any circumstances.

If praising Mr. Giraldi’s criticism of Price was your intention, I’d think a skilled wordsmith like yourself would be able to plumb the depths of his vast vocabulary, and find precise terms of praise not only more elegant and gracious, but also less subject to misinterpretation.

  48. Look deeper and you will find he recently payed off his mortgage or received a legacy. People don’t give up good jobs unless they can afford it.

  49. @Sparkon

With respect to your native feeling for American usage…

    1. the expression “hatchet job” is prima facie neutral as between complimentary and critical and depends on context for the correct connotation. The context in this case, the whole sentence, is unambiguously complimentary. Cp. “You belong to Torquemada’s team PG. You roasted hom slowly and I salute you with my golden crucifix”.

    2. You must be a nice person** who doesn’t inhabit either literary or political circles where, at least until recently in the world of literary reviews, “hatchet man” and “hatchet job” have been simple factual descriptions carrying no necessary negative connotation wrt thw wielder of the hatchet. Cf. “White House hatchet man – and he’s proud to be just that.”

**admittedly the average American is probably a lot more polite than the average Brit or Aussie. A close relative of mine said “Of course. Wouldn’t you be polite if you thought your interlocutor might be carrying a gun?” Three cheers for the Second Amendment.

  50. Svigor says:

Wiz, “hatchet man” and “hatchet job” are indeed generally negative. But not so negative that no circumstance could ever call for either, or that either could never be used positively.

Sort of like how mercy’s usually a good thing, until it isn’t.

this is part of a first phase attack on jews and israel.mostly to precondition english speaking populations to accept that attacks on jews are normal and wide spread.the same commenters are commenting on multiple sites
the second phase is physical attacks on jews and jewish institutions outside israel.similar to what has happened in france, england, and now the usa.this is to spread the idea that physical attacks are the norm.this combined with the message that israel must be punished along with its supporters is propagated on a daily basis.
the final phase will be a war on israel itself in 2017.unfortunately this will lead to an all out destruction of many countries.
the positioning of russian forces in syria and the arming of muslim countries by russia to force israel to retreat and surrender based on the similar stratetgy used by world powers on south africa will have severe consequences for russia and its leaders.the attempt by the usa to use russia to force a political compromise on israel if not administered fairly will backfire

Behind the Liberal Embrace of Trump’s Speech

I can’t say I’m surprised by the liberal turn on Trump. I said a couple of weeks ago that Trump and the establishment media were like George and Martha in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” What I meant was that they are a deranged, destructive couple who argue like mad, but ultimately collude to destroy others. So, anger and hate give way to insidious bond and admiration in how they each fulfill their roles in the larger manipulative project.

So, Van Jones is admiring of Trump now really “becoming the President” because of Trump’s emotional manipulation in the person of Carryn Owens. Jones did this because he’s a triangulator himself and because he is very much part of the continuing imperial project.

Some of this rather reminds me of how the media used Jessica Lynch to pretended she was in danger to continue selling the invasion of Iraq at a critical moment in 2003. The actual scandals are pushed aside: The criminal invasion of Iraq then; the US-backed Saudi destruction of Yemen now.

Disinformation and emotional manipulation for the privileged “race” of USians is the order of the day. Feminism and femininity are weaponized as all emotion is focused on one person to the exclusion of the suffering of others. I imagine it’s how The Passion Plays were used to fuel hatred of Jews; it’s how Israel uses the Nazi Holocaust to excuse all its criminality.

The other major such manipulation last night was highlighting African American “victims” of public schools and “illegal immigrants”. This allows Trump to ridiculously pose as an anti-racist xenophobe. As Martin Luther King warned in his final days: “We’re integrating into a burning house.”

“… the positioning of russian forces in syria and the arming of muslim countries by russia to force israel to retreat and surrender …”
Could you be more specific about Russia forcing Israel to “retreat and surrender?”
What retreat? – From the Syrian Golan Height, in the name of which the Israelis have been helping ISIS and destroying Syria?
What about the “surrender? ” – You mean the Russian attempts at stopping the spread of fanatical Islam near her borders? It is not for nothing that Saudis are known as the bosom buddies of Israelis. The US Congress has authorized the arming of both the “moderate” jihadis in the Middle East and “freedom fighters” of neo-Nazi persuasion in Ukraine, on advice of the leading ziocons. Is not Kagans’ clan a staunch supporter of the despicable warmonger Clinton (“we came, we saw, he died”)?
How about $15 million per/day “relocated” from the US taxpayers’ pockets to the Israeli citizens’ pockets? Still not enough? Perhaps this (and other ways the ziocons and Israel-firsters treat the US and EU citizenry) could be the cause of “a strong anti zionist slant.they are only in english and are aimed mostly at western english speaking populations.”
Your post is filled with whining and screaming over alleged Jewish victimization. Here are some facts for you: the power Mrs. Nuland-Kagan, a pupil of Cheney and progeny of east European jews, has been working hand in glove with Ukrainian neo-Nazis (remember Babi Yar?) Her comrade Mrs. Freeland, a Minister of International Trade of Canada, happened to be both the ideological and biologic progeny of a real Nazi (https://consortiumnews.com/2017/02/27/a-nazi-skeleton-in-the-family-closet/). Mr. Fleeland, similar to you, is a rabid Russophobe. Your countryman (actually he has three citizenship), Mr. Kolomojsky, a leader of Ukrainian Jewish Community, had been financing neo-Nazi thugs that arranged an auto-ca-fe of civilians in Odessa… In short, how about the innocent non-Jewish people being the victims of Jewish misdeeds?
And one another minor detail: you are mistaking the factual information for propaganda. You should better continue reading the New York Times, Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal to feel comfortable, and stay away from any factual information re Russian federation, Middle East, and Ukraine. Otherwise, the facts and the well- deserved criticism of warmongering ziocons would leave you feel victimized again and again.

He kept demanding an investigation into the “more than 90” bomb threats such centers in the US had received since January. It seems incredible that not one person making those threats could be tracked down simply using caller ID.

Also on NPR a couple of days ago, the subject of this piece said that Trump’s head obscuring the star at CIA HQ memorializing some female officer killed in the line of duty was a decisive moment for him. He realized he couldn’t serve a man who would obscure such a relic, even for a moment. It was very touching.

The same with Kolomojsky; it does not take much time to find information on his financing of Ukrainian neo-Nazi.

Humbly, I want to give my comment a title: A TROUBLED ISRAELI ANALYST FINDS UIGHUR-JIHADIS TERROR THREAT.

Please follow me for a moment, MEexpert?

In today’s Wall Street Journal, page A7, there’s a weird article called “Uighurs Threaten Attacks in ISIS Video,” written by Te-Ping Chen. Below, I will transcribe a portion of the article for you and others, including author, Philip Giraldi.

“An Islamic State video APPEARS (my emphasis) to show recruits from China’s Uighur minority threatening to ‘avenge oppression,’ feeding into Beijing’s assertion of a growing jihadist terror threat threat.”

Te-Ping’s next paragraph: “The half-hour video was released Monday by an Islamic State division in western Iraq, said the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors online jihadist activity. Subtitled in both Arabic and Uighur, it shows what SITE says are Uighur fighters on the battlefield, as well as several grisly executions of accused informants.”

Trying to reason with Sam Shama (on the shallow I. Mercer article) has done serious injury to my patience & charity, so I Google-searched “SITE Intelligence Group” and learned that it is a “for profit, Maryland-based company, led by the Israeli analyst, Rita Katz.”

“Shazam,” said Gomer Pyle, and please refer to SITE Intelligence Group profile, below?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SITE_Intelligence_Group

Your comment # 65 accurately asserts “Jews control Americans” and it APPEARS (my emphasis) that patriotic Chinese better head out the Forbidden City gate right now, because the heavily armed & dangerous Goldman Sachs Group pivot is headed Far East.

I would say the war is over and the gentiles lost. At any rate, the de-Christianizing of Ireland as evidenced by the legalizing of abortion in this most Catholic nation is analogous to Stalin conquering England. Ironically, Russia and the Slavic lands seem to be the last bastions of Christendom, which IMO is the never-discussed reason for the relentless drive to make Russia our enemy. Trump had intended to work for détente. The fake “collusion” scandal seems to have achieved its purpose whether or not Trump is impeached.

  89. @Wizard of Oz

I agree, but the costs imposed by Israel are a lot larger than they appear. Those wars cost trillions, and the unwillingness of politicians to offend Jewish donors and editorial writers who combine advocacy of Israel with social progressivism has been a large factor in the harmful transformation of the culture.

  90. @mcohen

I frequently see the expression “Jew-hater” but isn’t it possible that some of the people so-labeled are mere “dislikers” or “resenters” or that they feel toward Jews something analogous to the way Jews feel about evangelicals or old-time Irish Catholics? Why must one either love Jews or hate them? Why no in-between?
