Decades ago, a debate over what kind of nation America is roiled the conservative movement.

Neocons claimed America was an “ideological nation” a “creedal nation,” dedicated to the proposition that “all men are created equal.”

Expropriating the biblical mandate, “Go forth and teach all nations!” they divinized democracy and made the conversion of mankind to the democratic faith their mission here on earth.

With his global crusade for democracy, George W. Bush bought into all this. Result: Ashes in our mouths and a series of foreign policy disasters, beginning with Afghanistan and Iraq.

Behind the Trumpian slogan “America First” lay a conviction that, with the Cold War over and the real ideological nation, the USSR, shattered into pieces along ethnic lines, it was time for America to come home.

Contra the neocons, traditionalists argued that, while America was uniquely great, the nation was united by faith, culture, language, history, heroes, holidays, mores, manners, customs and traditions. A common feature of Americans, black and white, was pride in belonging to a people that had achieved so much.

The insight attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville — “America is great because she is good, and if America ceases to be good, she will cease to be great” — was a belief shared by almost all.

What makes our future appear problematic is that what once united us now divides us. While Presidents Wilson and Truman declared us to be a “Christian nation,” Christianity has been purged from our public life and sheds believers every decade. Atheism and agnosticism are growing rapidly, especially among the young.

Traditional morality, grounded in Christianity, is being discarded. Half of all marriages end in divorce. Four-in-10 children are born out of wedlock. Unrestricted abortion and same-sex marriage — once regarded as marks of decadence and decline — are now seen as human rights and the hallmarks of social progress.

Tens of millions of us do not speak English. Where most of our music used to be classic, popular, country and western, and jazz, much of it now contains rutting lyrics that used to be unprintable.

Where we used to have three national networks, we have three 24-hour cable news channels and a thousand websites that reinforce our clashing beliefs on morality, culture, politics and race.

Consider but a few events post-Charlottesville.

“Murderer” was painted on the San Fernando statue of Fr. Junipero Serra, the Franciscan who founded the missions that became San Diego, San Francisco, San Juan Capistrano and Santa Clara.

America’s oldest monument honoring Columbus, in Baltimore, was vandalized. Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia called for Robert E. Lee’s statue to be removed from Capitol and replaced by — Pocahontas.

According to legend, this daughter of Chief Powhatan saved Captain John Smith from being beheaded by throwing herself across his neck. The Chief was a “person of interest” in the disappearance of the “Lost Colony” of Roanoke Island, among whose missing was Virginia Dare, the first European baby born in British America.

Why did Kaine not call for John Smith himself, leader of the Jamestown Colony that fought off Indian attacks, to be so honored?

In New Orleans, “Tear It Down” was spray-painted on a statue of Joan of Arc, a gift from France in 1972. Besides being a canonized saint in the Catholic Church and a legendary heroine of France, what did the Maid of Orleans do to deserve this?

Taken together, we are seeing the discoverers, explorers and missionaries of North America demonized as genocidal racists all. The Founding Fathers are either slave owners or sanctioners of slavery.

Our nation-builders either collaborated in or condoned the ethnic cleansing of Native Americans. Almost to the present, ours was a land where segregationists were honored leaders.

Bottom line for the left: Americans should be sickened and ashamed of the history that made us the world’s greatest nation. And we should acknowledge our ancestors’ guilt by tearing down any and all monuments and statues that memorialize them.

This rising segment of America, full of self-righteous rage, is determined to blacken the memory of those who have gone before us.

To another slice of America, much of the celebrated social and moral “progress” of recent decades induces a sense of nausea, summarized in the lament, “This isn’t the country we grew up in.”

Hillary Clinton famously described this segment of America as a “basket of deplorables … racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic … bigots,” and altogether “irredeemable.”

ORDER IT NOW

So, what still unites us? What holds us together into the indefinite future? What makes us one nation and one people? What do we offer mankind, as nations seem to recoil from what we are becoming, and are instead eager to build their futures on the basis of ethnonationalism and fundamentalist faith?

If advanced democracy has produced the disintegration of a nation that we see around us, what is the compelling case for it?

A sixth of the way through the 21st century, what is there to make us believe this will be the Second American Century?

Patrick J. Buchanan is the author of a new book, “Nixon’s White House Wars: The Battles That Made and Broke a President and Divided America Forever.”

As a libertarian, that act would mark the final end of the long decline of free America indeed. Just in terms of a Feral Gov't that gave a single damn about the people I'd mark it around 1995, as I wrote here and here.

I am going to answer what may or may not be rhetorical questions.

    So, what still unites us?

What is the point of being united? How can one be united with people who want me and my kind extinguished, who want us to kowtow to everyone, and want us to pay taxes to fund the births of those who are aggressive towards us? About the only thing that unites us is a grudging respect for the teeth of the rule of law.

What holds us together into the indefinite future?

Not a lot. There is no respect for our ancestors. There is precious little love, respect, admiration, even non-aggression for living white people that I can see. This is how it is now. We can only assume it will be a lot worse when we are a minority.

What makes us one nation and one people?

We aren’t. We are a Babel of oil and water. The emulsion in the Melting Pot is de-emulsifying. There is a white nation among us that is rapidly (in political time scales) waking up, and there is everyone else.

What do we offer mankind, as nations seem to recoil from what we are becoming, and are instead eager to build their futures on the basis of ethnonationalism and fundamentalist faith?

I’m not sure there is a lot to offer besides various addictive vices. Unimpeded shipping lanes outside of the South China Sea. Leftists have said that ethnonationalism and tribalism is fine for everyone else, I’m not going to adopt their view that I should be somehow different just because of my DNA.

If advanced democracy has produced the disintegration of a nation that we see around us, what is the compelling case for it?

“There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide” – John Adams

“Democracies have, in general, been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths.” – James Madison

A sixth of the way through the 21st century, what is there to make us believe this will be the Second American Century?

I’m not sure there will be. A white nation with a eugenic focus could get there. With that you have unity and improving human capital. What emerges out of the current mess could be that. In the mean time China looks like it is going to be something of a force to be reckoned with, although it’s an open question how it would handle a trade war with the US and others.

I think we are kind of waiting on an emerging ideology, or religion, but more likely ideology I think. It’s already happening. This is what the left wanted, right? Me, I really didn’t mind the idea of liberal decadence in whitopia, but you can’t have that and open borders too. They wanted familiarity, and it’s breeding contempt.

indeed, after 9/11, it looks like the ZUSA actually does want this century to be as bloody and horrific as the last one. A second “American Century”? I’ll pass.

for the record Mr. Buchanan, the idea of America died in my heart when I was subjected to your generation’s solution to black rage, and gave them Affirmative Action.

you didn’t like that the Soviets were using the rioting blacks as propaganda, so you tossed the young white men of America under the bus. And by doing so, now you’re reaping your harvest. I for one couldn’t give a plug nickel for your so-called America. An America that you wanted to maintain at our expense. An America that had some racial issues to deal with, and rather than dealing with it, you figured it’d be easier to heap the guilt upon a convenient and powerless whipping boy, (young white men from working class families). You wanted us to be your sacrificial goats, so your generation could purge your own. You didn’t want to deal the problem of black violence and inequality, because doing so would be difficult and problematic. So you appeased them with our futures. And today America is reaping what you have sown.

White men like me laugh at your so-called union. What union? A polyglot of competing ethnicities and cultures that you opened the gates to and fed so that Nixon’s and Reagan’s careers could flourish.

Imperial Washington is determined to rule the Earth by force of arms. Legions of Maoists want to turn white people into untouchables. It’s over for our republic. Our Constitution is stone cold dead. The empire itself is in steep decline.

    , @Citizen of a Silly Country
Haidt either can't or won't connect the dots that culture and biology are the same thing long term.

He's hanging his hat on the idea that culture can turn blacks and browns into whites in black and brown face. He's also assuming that other races think the way that we do. White hubris at its finest.

We're different. It's why we have separate countries. It's what works. It's what has always worked for thousands of years. We're 50 years into this multi-racial experiment, and it's already beginning to fail. Throughout history multi-racial or multi-ethnic societies have failed over and over while homogenous societies endure.

Multi-racial societies function reasonably well when one group dominates another. But it's inherently unstable as the balance of power inevitably shits. That's what we have here. The once dominate group is fading and other groups are pushing forward very, very quickly to fill in the vacuum. Same old, same old.

I'm not blaming Pat, per se. In fact I think Pat Buchanan is a great American, and you're right, a prophet of sorts. In fact, if I were pres, I'd make Pat Buchanan Secretary of State without even blinking.

    but..

I have my issues. Nixon and Reagan were not the saintly statesmen Pat occasionally makes them out to be. Reagan gave the illegals amnesty, and therefor encouraged millions more to come. He also deregulated the banks, opening up the doors to Wall Street predatory looting. Nixon supported the Israelis during the Yom Kippur War, and caused the oil embargo and forced Americans to drive at 55 mph so he could massage his Jewish master's will. You may say that's not life and death, but it was just part of the pattern. We just built these marvelous freeways, and Detroit was kicking out some masterpieces of highway design, and then we all have to crawl on the roads because Nixon was serving another nation over the interests of the one he was elected to serve.

All white Pat watched from the wings.

but my main issue is the Affirmative Action moral abomination, that told poor white men that because racism and discrimination was wrong, that they were to take their white arses to the back of the line.

Our founders would be spinning in their graves if they knew how perfidious and craven America's leaders had become. They had no spine. No integrity. You don't toss members of your citizenry under the bus to expiate the guilt of men long dead to appease a class of rioting criminals. That serial capitulation is what brought us all to this point, when America is now lost.

And Pat Buchanan was there for the whole ride.

Not that he isn't a great American, but perhaps the only one who stands heads and shoulders above him is Ron Paul, and I always felt that Buchanan's support for Paul was tepid, at best. When it should have been thunderous, and passionate.

But then Pat always was obsessed with abortion, and seemed to want to make that his raison d'etre, damn the torpedoes and come what may.

anyways, I guess I'm just lamenting the loss of a once great republic, betrayed and sold down the river by ambitious and mediocre men. And feeling a little bit of wrath for the generation of Americans that were born with a nation with so much hope and possibility, but then whose stewardship has left it a looted, rotting carcass.

"how much pride do you suspect that most black Americans had for what America had achieved? why do you think there was so much racial strife in the country? It was because blacks didn’t feel that pride, all they felt was alienation."

The same pride as any immigrant group who came to America who had been cast aside by nativists, from the Irish to the Germans to the Assyrians to the Vietnamese. And considering black contributions to our society, it is obvious they had pride in their nation.

"when they suit up their children to go kill and die in zio-wars."

Which is a mere assumption on your part. Just like your assumption that the CIA and Mossad hijacked the planes on 911 and used remote control planes instead. So, again, "How could the passenger remains be found and identified through DNA testing in NYC and Pennsylvania…if they were liquidated in some other place?

"we destroyed the best tribe of Europe"

The Germans are an ethnic group, not a tribe, and it is your opinion that they were the "best".

"they haven’t thought it through yet"

No, Americans in general have thought it through, and it is other than desirable.

"when they understand the simple and obvious arguments for secession."

But somehow you know better than the normies. Indeed, you have to go back.

"a place for the Corvys of the world, (NYC, Baltimore, Detroit), and another for us deplorables.. (heartland, mountains, and plains) with a big beautiful wall- with Corvy and his diversity on the other side."

Diversity has always been part of our world. Your "tribe", the Germans, came "from their homes in southern Scandinavia and northern Germany the tribes began expanding south, east and west in the 1st century—BC, coming into contact with the Celtic tribes of Gaul, as well as with Iranian, Baltic, and Slavic cultures in Central/Eastern Europe." [wikipedia]

Sounds like a ton of race and/or ethnic mixing to me.

This is a HUGE topic, hard to cover in a short article.
First, I echo Pat’s sorrow at the negativity evidenced viz. our past.
However, the fact is that, much like the present, most of our history comprises lies covering up huge crimes, mainly massive deception on the part of those in charge. Only in the past two decades has any idea of the scale of decimation of the indigenous populations in North and South America emerged. When I was a boy I was told there were only a couple of million of Indians in America, whereas more recent estimations have it at 50 million plus. And Central America had larger cities than any in Europe at the time with close to 200 million perhaps, 90% of whom died in a matter of decades, an appalling price to be paid for our arrival. That most of this was due to lack of resistance to our imported microbes does not excuse that our history fails to tell this. What an appalling and inhuman lack of respect and decency. We are not as superior and tolerant as we pretend to be.

Similarly: the slavery story: Slavery is a nasty business, but life back then was extremely hard, and furthermore blacks weren’t the only ones in slavery – for a while white slaves far outnumbered them. In the late 1800′s children were sent down to the mines in England, many of them dying young. If you were an able-bodied male, even one as young as 12, and out at night in the wrong place and time, a press gang was legally allowed to knock you out and drag you into a life of service on the high seas. And if you tried to escape, it was the noose for you. It is both hard for us and wrong to judge people in the past based on our own more delicate sensibilities.

Indeed, it is thanks to their great work, sacrifice and yes, crimes, that we have progressed to the point that we can look back at many of their practices with disapproval. Unfortunately we seem unwilling to merge that with understanding, largely because of an inadequate educational institutions and a sensation-driven public press.

In order for us to unite, we have to dig much deeper, reject the storm und drang of outrageously polemic, Deep-State-managed press and many other institutions, and tap into our fundamental humanity along with learning what the constitution is and why it is the way it is. The attempt is to create a genuinely uplifted, and also flexible, society. But it can be hijacked by determined powers and become a plutocracy, which is what has happened.

What will unite us, truly, is when we realise the degree to which all normal people, both ‘left’ and ‘right’, ‘black’ and ‘white’ have been and are being manipulated so that they don’t come together. We should unite to throw off the yoke of oppression placed and used by the Elites who have infested and bloated all major social institutions, private and public.

It is time to throw off that yoke.

My country, ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing:
Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrims’ pride,
From ev’ry mountain side let freedom ring!

My native country, thee, land of the noble free, thy name I love:
    I love thy rocks and rills, thy woods and templed hills;
My heart with rapture thrills like that above.

Let music swell the breeze, and ring from all the trees sweet freedom’s song:
    Let mortal tongues awake, let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break, the sound prolong.

Our fathers’ God, to Thee, author of liberty, to Thee we sing:
    Long may our land be bright with freedom’s holy light;
Protect us by Thy might, great God, our King!

“A common feature of Americans, black and white, was pride in belonging to a people that had achieved so much.”

Patrick got it right. This observation is definitively accurate.

how much pride do you suspect that most black Americans had for what America had achieved?

why do you think there was so much racial strife in the country? It was because blacks didn't feel that pride, all they felt was alienation.

In what ways have Christians, for example, sold their soul to Jews?

when they suit up their children to go kill and die in zio-wars (both world wars and all the wars in the Middle East. Duh.

    victories in two world wars.

    some "victories"

we destroyed the best tribe of Europe and handed millions over to the tender mercies of Stalin, while political correctness destroyed the fabric of American society here at home.

“let it rip asunder into a dozen smaller states, where people can once again coalesce with common interests and thrive with self-determination and hope for their children…”

Most Americans disapprove of your message. Again, you have to go back.

Tim Kaine of Virginia called for Robert E. Lee’s statue to be removed from Capitol and replaced by — Pocahontas.

Oh, the irony. Leftists and even some cucks have been claiming that confederate statues must come down or at least not be defended and protected because they and their cause were defeated in the civil war. So in their stead we’ll erect monuments to American Indians who themselves were utterly defeated by both Northern and Southern white men.

The defenders of confederate monuments are correct that this campaign is a naked assault on white history and culture regardless of the official reasons given by authorities. This is just another phase in the permanent revolution. The (((left))) wants monuments to white history and culture replaced with the plastic gods of multiculturalism and cultural Marxism.

This hasn't been the nation I grew up in since enactment of the PATRIOT Act.

As a libertarian, that act would mark the final end of the long decline of free America indeed. Just in terms of a Feral Gov’t that gave a single damn about the people I’d mark it around 1995, as I wrote here and here.

Jonathan Haidt has interesting observations on the subject.

He is far more optimistic than I am about eventual outcomes, but has well-founded observations on the details of what is driving the process.

This link is to a short video. Youtube provides links to more.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-_Az5nZBBM

Haidt either can’t or won’t connect the dots that culture and biology are the same thing long term.

He’s hanging his hat on the idea that culture can turn blacks and browns into whites in black and brown face. He’s also assuming that other races think the way that we do. White hubris at its finest.

We’re different. It’s why we have separate countries. It’s what works. It’s what has always worked for thousands of years. We’re 50 years into this multi-racial experiment, and it’s already beginning to fail. Throughout history multi-racial or multi-ethnic societies have failed over and over while homogenous societies endure.

Multi-racial societies function reasonably well when one group dominates another. But it’s inherently unstable as the balance of power inevitably shits. That’s what we have here. The once dominate group is fading and other groups are pushing forward very, very quickly to fill in the vacuum. Same old, same old.

    The US economy.

The US is an underachiever — that true. However, it is large and robust. It is highly diversified. The best way to get a sense of it is global travel.

Since the financial crisis, the US has continued to grow, and done better than any other developed economy. In addition, the US invented and developed the Unconventional Oil industry, which is now sufficient for North American energy independence including natural gas.

As far as the future? I’m not interested in speculating. The US economy is better than other countries. The US dollar is also strong.

I have a feeling that this is a minority opinion here. There is plenty of economic disaster porn — zero hedge and the like.

The only reason I bothered is that even with all its problems, the US has a lot holding it together. And the economy is a big part of it.

  22. The main thing that unites so-called “Americans” in the year 2017 is a hatred and disgust for white males. Several decades of saturation-coverage mass-media hate programming have resulted in this.

In the New Century now, the “Two Percent” can lord it over a squabbling, violent mess of third-world tribes, which is the only thing that makes them feel safe. Some of the peaceful marchers that recent night in Charlottesville chanted that they will not be replaced! But it’s already happened.

Even if third-world immigration were to completely cease tomorrow, it’d still be too late. The demographic trends put in place with five decades of it would see to that. Patrick Buchanan warned against this result a long time ago, but Patrick Buchanan, sadly, is about as powerless as the rest of us.

Very, very soon even making these observations will not only be illegal, it will be impossible as the chokehold on the flow of information becomes complete. Freedom? Hope you enjoyed it. Turns out that freedom was just another white-male construct to be jettisoned in the interest of the Ruling Class.
