“Meet you at Peace Cross.”

In northwest D.C. in the 1950s, that was an often-heard comment among high schoolers headed for Ocean City.

The Peace Cross, in Bladensburg, Maryland, was a 40-feet concrete memorial to the 49 sons of Prince George’s County lost in the Great War. Paid for by county families and the American Legion, it had stood since 1925.

Before the Beltway was built, Peace Cross, at the junction of U.S. Route 1 and Maryland Route 450, was a landmark to us all.

Last month, two federal judges from the 4th Circuit ruled that Peace Cross “excessively entangles the government and religion” and must come down. A suggested compromise was to saw the arms off, so the monument ceases to be an offensive cross.

One wonders: At what moment did Peace Cross begin to violate the Constitution?

Answer: Never. No alteration has been made to the cross in a century. The change has come in the minds of intolerant judges and alienated elites where the dirty creek of anti-Christian bigotry now flows into the polluted stream of anti-Americanism.

Both are manifest in the rampage to rip down memorials to the men who brought Western Civilization to the New World and made America the great and good country we were blessed to inherit.

Monday, on Laura Ingraham’s Fox News show, White House Chief of Staff Gen. John Kelly called Robert E. Lee “an honorable man,” who chose to defend the people among whom he had been raised.

“It was always loyalty to state first in those days,” said Kelly, when asked his view on Alexandria’s Episcopal Church taking down plaques to its greatest parishioners, Lee and George Washington.

An explosion of outrage greeted Kelly’s defense of Lee.

Yet, what has changed in half a century? As Ingraham noted, FDR, an icon of liberalism, referred to Lee as “one of our greatest American Christians and one of our greatest American gentlemen.”

Asked in 1960 how he could keep a portrait of a man who tried to “destroy our government” in his Oval Office, President Eisenhower wrote his critic back:

“General Robert E. Lee was one of the supremely gifted men produced by our Nation. He believed unswervingly in the Constitutional validity of his cause which until 1865 was still an arguable question in America; he was a poised and inspiring leader, true to the high trust reposed in him by millions of his fellow citizens; he was thoughtful yet demanding of his officers and men, forbearing with captured enemies but ingenious, unrelenting and personally courageous in battle, and never disheartened by a reverse or obstacle. Through all his many trials, he remained selfless almost to a fault and unfailing in his faith in God. Taken altogether, he was noble as a leader and as a man, and unsullied as I read the pages of our history…

“To the degree that present-day American youth will strive to emulate his rare qualities, including his devotion to this land as revealed in his painstaking efforts to help heal the Nation’s wounds once the bitter struggle was over, we, in our own time of danger in a divided world, will be strengthened and our love of freedom sustained.

“Such are the reasons that I proudly display the picture of this great American on my office wall.”

Have some terrible new truths been unearthed about Lee we did not know in 1960?

No. The change has taken place in the poisoned minds of modernity.

Some will never concede there was principle or honor in the cause of a South that declared independence in 1860-61, emulating the 13 colonies that declared their independence in 1776.

In his tribute to Lee in 1960, Ike addressed what was at issue in 1860 that brought on the war.

“We need to understand that at the time of the War Between the States the issue of secession had remained unresolved for more than 70 years. Men of probity, character, public standing and unquestioned loyalty, both North and South, had disagreed over this issue as a matter of principle from the day our Constitution was adopted.”

Ike refers not to a “Civil War,” but to the “War Between the States.” And correctly so. For the South did not seek to bring down the U.S. government, or overturn Lincoln’s election, or seize power in the capital — but to leave the Union, to secede, as Jefferson and John Adams voted to secede from Britain in 1776.

Asked on Fox News about what is happening today with the public insults to our national anthem and the desecration of our monuments, Justice Clarence Thomas raises questions being asked by many Americans:

“What binds us? What do we all have in common anymore? … We always talk about E pluribus unum. What’s our unum now? We have the pluribus. What’s the unum?”

The spirit that produced the war in the 1860s, and lasting division in the 1960s, is abroad again. A great secession of the heart is underway.

Patrick J. Buchanan is the author of a new book, “Nixon’s White House Wars: The Battles That Made and Broke a President and Divided America Forever.”

  2. No where near an expert on Lee etc but from memory what Ike said about Lee rings true. My impression is that Lee was, indeed, a true gentleman ( and a great soldier).

  3. Great, informed article, Pat.

But I’m afraid it will go over the head of most Democrat voters; it’s too nuanced. They want simple, more emotionally-gratifying narratives of good vs. evil, them vs. us.

BTW, Did Ike really write that response himself? If so then my esteem for him just rose immensely.

I agree - ethics isn't a story of good vs evil. It's good in conflict with other goods, and good that unavoidably drags in some evil with it. It's goods making necessary alliances with evils until you have quite a tangled up mess. Good ethics means untangling what part of those knots you can, responsibly. Try explaining that to a liberal crusader boiling over with moral outrage.

According to one Secret Service agent, his letters were telepathically dictated to his private secretary, Mrs. Whitman. She then read the President's thoughts back to him so he could make corrections.

  4. I share the profound belief in “E Pluribus Unum” and concern that America is splintering. I also believe that people should be understood in the context of their own time. Finally, I respect Lee’s obvious talents and accept Eisenhower’s assessment of Lee’s personal character.

But I cannot accept that it was principled and honorable for Southern states to leave the Union, any more than I could accept secession by California today, or by Connecticut and other New England states during the War of 1812. E Pluribus Unum means sticking together. Period.

We’re already splintered. There is no recovering from this. The progressives have revealed themselves as psychopaths hell-bent on destroying western civilization. They don’t want to stick together. They want what we have gone and replaced with some nightmare from their diseased minds.

It should be noted that Lee was a Bird Colonel in the Regular Army when South Carolina seceded. The case made by President Eisenhower and Mr. Buchanan would be stronger if he were a junior officer in the Virginia Militia. I believe he does deserve credit for his courage, honesty, military achievements before the Civil War, and efforts at reconciliation after the War.
    , @pyrrhus
You're wrong. It was understood from the inception that the Constitution was a voluntary union, and New England considered secession during the War of 1812...Three States, including New York, specifically reserved the right to secede when they ratified the Constitution.

I did this in my heart a long time ago

as soon as I heard that poor white men were going to be officially discriminated against in every way possible, so that blacks (and then browns too and then every non-white on the planet who can get here) could take what they had

the decision to toss working class white men under the racial bus, so as to mollify the angry Negroes and others, so that the white elites could continue to loot the nation, and pretend they were friends with the communist, rioting blacks too!

    ~ did it for me.

when they tossed the principles of the Constitution into the toilet, I knew the charade was over, and it was all now a pathetic fraud.

now I long for the day that whitey finally says ‘enough!’, and secedes not just in his heart, but legally and spiritually and in ever other way. And pulls his support for a system that hates them and uses the effort of their sweat to destroy them.

it’s humiliating to continue the farce when they’re telling you we have a rule of law, only it doesn’t apply to you- working class white guy, because you’ve been slated as the official whipping post of the minorities, as the scape goat of the elites, so they can continue to have their Champaign and private jets, and the Negroes won’t riot any longer. Problem solved!

And now as the rot has metastasized all across the nation, and now the middle class too are reeling from the demands of the ‘identity politics’ shitlibs and pedophiles and corrupt-crony 1%, all demanding their entitled share of the pie, I simply enjoy the spectacle.

give California to the NFL football ‘heroes’ and La Raza and the LGBTs and their neocon enablers

let it come crashing down just like the Peace Cross. That symbol of valor was doomed the moment our treasonous elites used the Constitution for toilet paper. Now they can reap what they sowed.

perhaps out of the carnage a Phoenix might rise, and with it some small shred of hope for a new beginning.

but as it is, with the crony-merger-too big to fails, and consolidated media and MIC all clamoring to shove their snouts in the $lop trough, competing with millions upon millions of lazy, worthless snowflakes, all squealing and shoving, I haven’t considered this place “united” for decades. What a pathetic joke.

take the Peace Cross down and store it. If there’s ever any men and women in the future with the kind of mettle when this nation was carved out of the wilderness, and we were a proud and spiritually strong people, with integrity and strength of character, we can unpack it and set it back up.

But today it’s a relic from a bygone time. Like the buildings falling over in the movie Idiocracy.

This is something of the truth to be sure - the dark presence of athiestic Zionists influencing so much of American society and government, and the more it is denied and covered up, the more boldly it can act. I believe there is more to it, though - the ideology of atheism and Darwinism is at the core of neoliberal and neocon philosophy, the belief that morals are relative and power is everything. Then there is the agenda of the powerful elites, who want to destroy anything that gives us solidarity or collective defense against them: family, religion, class, civic pride, neighborly cohesiveness, racial pride (without racist hatred) and love of country (without hatred of foreigners). All those things have been picked apart and destroyed by the culture of the so-called "progressive", but I dislike the term (being something of a left-winger myself). There is nothing progressive, or liberal, about silencing dissent, condemning the thoughts and beliefs of others, forcing self-censorship in language, persecution of churches, of heterosexuals, of white people, intolerance, and most disgustingly, a blind worship of power and love of war. These are the identifying characteristics of the neocon/neolib power elite and their mouthpieces in the media and think-tanks, who love nothing more than to see us fight over left and right, liberal and conservative, gay and straight, black and white, Christian and Muslim - when they care nothing for these things, in fact, they wish to see them all destroyed, leaving empty shells, slaves who work, consume and die in service to this sick, disgusting breed of modern fascists. PC and identity politics are the ideological brethren of humanitarian intervention and the technocracy, of endless war and total surveillance. We must all be proud of our genders, our marriages, our churches (or mosques) and our races - only then can we have the solidarity needed to fight back against these gray evil parasites who feed off us like vampires while we fight each other.

The South certainly did seek to seize power in the capital, and it’s a distortion of history to claim the contrary.

The Gettysburg campaign and other Confederate incursions into free States, including the Canada based raid on St. Alban's, Vermont, were instances of the best defense being a good offense.

A suggested compromise was to saw the arms off

to leave the Union, to secede, as Jefferson and John Adams voted to secede from Britain in 1776.

    ~ did it for me.

when they tossed the principles of the Constitution into the toilet, I knew the charade was over, and it was all now a pathetic fraud.

now I long for the day that whitey finally says 'enough!', and secedes not just in his heart, but legally and spiritually and in ever other way. And pulls his support for a system that hates them and uses the effort of their sweat to destroy them.

it's humiliating to continue the farce when they're telling you we have a rule of law, only it doesn't apply to you- working class white guy, because you've been slated as the official whipping post of the minorities, as the scape goat of the elites, so they can continue to have their Champaign and private jets, and the Negroes won't riot any longer. Problem solved!

And now as the rot has metastasized all across the nation, and now the middle class too are reeling from the demands of the 'identity politics' shitlibs and pedophiles and corrupt-crony 1%, all demanding their entitled share of the pie, I simply enjoy the spectacle.

let it fall from the rot at its foundation

let us all secede in our hearts

we live in Idiocracy now. Robert E. Lee would die of dry heaves if he saw what we've become.

give California to the NFL football 'heroes' and La Raza and the LGBTs and their neocon enablers

let it come crashing down just like the Peace Cross. That symbol of valor was doomed the moment our treasonous elites used the Constitution for toilet paper. Now they can reap what they sowed.

perhaps out of the carnage a Phoenix might rise, and with it some small shred of hope for a new beginning.

but as it is, with the crony-merger-too big to fails, and consolidated media and MIC all clamoring to shove their snouts in the $lop trough, competing with millions upon millions of lazy, worthless snowflakes, all squealing and shoving, I haven't considered this place "united" for decades. What a pathetic joke.

take the Peace Cross down and store it. If there's ever any men and women in the future with the kind of mettle when this nation was carved out of the wilderness, and we were a proud and spiritually strong people, with integrity and strength of character, we can unpack it and set it back up.

But today it's a relic from a bygone time. Like the buildings falling over in the movie Idiocracy.

    https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/static.nextnature.net/app/uploads/2010/12/idio-city.jpg

we should embrace our new reality with proper contempt

What have the Romans done for us? Sure we have clean water from aqueducts. The written language and books have improved our lots. The roads now allow for travel and the Legions protect our travellers and our goods. Certainly having standard weights and common currency makes for easier trade between peoples. Oh, sure those great goods and food for the people seems good, and that long history of myths and plays are enjoyable. But ultimately the people who are coming here now and rapine and looting are finding this law and order paradigm troubling since many are used to the sublime savagery of tribal combat. Lets not forget this land was once just an open land full of dangerous animals and disease, where want and starvation required wholesale slaughter of animals, plants and people. That is the indigenous culture of land between the waters under the moon gawds who demand blood sacrifices.
What have the Romans done for us?

I share the profound belief in "E Pluribus Unum" and concern that America is splintering. I also believe that people should be understood in the context of their own time. Finally, I respect Lee's obvious talents and accept Eisenhower's assessment of Lee's personal character.

But I cannot accept that it was principled and honorable for Southern states to leave the Union, any more than I could accept secession by California today, or by Connecticut and other New England states during the War of 1812. E Pluribus Unum means sticking together. Period.

I think they were generally realistic enough to know they couldn’t take over the entire United States. Imagine them ruling New England. They certainly wanted the Border States. The Gettysburg campaign and other Confederate incursions into free States, including the Canada based raid on St. Alban’s, Vermont, were instances of the best defense being a good offense.

You’re wrong. It was understood from the inception that the Constitution was a voluntary union, and New England considered secession during the War of 1812…Three States, including New York, specifically reserved the right to secede when they ratified the Constitution.

Hopefully this gets appealed and either the federal appellate court judges or the SCOTUS will reverse this blatantly anti-Christian ruling and chide the neo-Bolshevik judges on the district court.

"If Lincoln had not started the war, there would have been no attempt by the Confederate nation to take DC. " -- Mallory

Thus, you yourself admit that there was an "attempt by the Confederate nation to take DC," and hence Pat was incorrect to write that the South did not seek "to seize power in the capital". What else was the attack by a large force of the Army of Virginia on DC, 11 July 1864, if not an expression of the South's seeking to "seize power in the capital"? Oh, yes, of course, it was a mistake ... a misunderstanding ... by General Jubal Early ... who was exceeding his orders as given by General Robert Lee.

You, Mallory, have not even attempted to make out that case, probably because you know that there are two big problems with it: (1) If Early's attack had succeeded, no one in the South would have objected, indeed they would all have applauded, including Lee, and, (2) men died on that day, and history written in blood is history written that cannot be ignored on grounds of inconvenience to one argument or another.

    https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/when-washington-dc-came-close-to-being-conquered-by-the-confederacy-1809994/

You know, Mallory, if Pat had included some qualifier in his statement -- such as "did not initially" -- I would not have objected. But Pat did not, just as. if Early had decided to stay within his orders as given by Lee, Pat's statement could have been true ... and just as "if wishes were horses, beggars would ride." If, if and if.

Sorry, Mallory, I really am, I wish Pat had been rigorously truthful ... but he chose a falsehood over the truth. Someone had to call him out for that.

  34. Speaking of the Civil War, I came across this magnificent passage a few weeks ago:

“It is not strange that those who passed through the terrific conflict hold in their hearts memories dear to them, and memories bitter to them. It would indeed be gross ingratitude for either to forget. The man who would rob them of their traditions is unworthy of American citizenship.

It has been my privilege to know both the heart of the North and the heart of the South. Born in New England, and true to its traditions, I have lived in the Southland and loved its wholesome spirit of fidelity. It has been my pleasure to treasure the intimate friendship of those who were most deeply affected by the conflict. I have heard from their own lips the heart-rending incidents. I have seen the tears in their eyes as they recall their sufferings.

Those whose homes were in the midst of the struggle, and experienced its ravages, cannot and should not forget the heroic efforts which they made to protect their loved ones. I reverence them for it, as I believe every true American does, and I bow my head in respect whenever a memorial is erected to perpetuate the memory of the Americans who wore the Blue and the Americans who wore the Gray – both true to the highest and noblest impulses of manhood.”

-Francis Trevelyan Miller (1877-1959) Editor-in-chief of the Journal of American History

Americans don’t talk (or think) like this anymore.

Good post. The radical left (shitlibs) and their coalition of disgruntled non-whites have been driven to blind rage and bloodlust by decades of mostly Jewish hate propaganda against any white people who are conservative, Christian, non-socialist and/or who don't hate themselves. Hysterical leftist screeds leading up to the election and after have amounted to nothing less than incitements to violence against the "racists" and "deplorables" (non-leftist white people) who they deem responsible for the election of Trump and all of America's domestic problems.

Church shooter Devin Kelley likely lapped up all of this left wing bile like honey as has 35-40% of the white population. And just like James T. Hodgskinson, Stephen Paddock (and other LV shooters/co-conspirators), antifa and Rand Paul's assailants did and future perps of left wing violence against people perceived as "deplorables" will have.

Trump, FOX and others on the Kosher right are trying to frame this as strictly a mental health issue so they don't have to deal with the problem of left wing jihad that's kicked in to high gear since his election.

The people who you describe in the bolded sentence are the ones for whom Theodor Adorno designed his F-scale (f stands for Fascist) in his book, The Authoritarian Personality*.

Hysterical leftist screeds leading up to the election and after have amounted to nothing less than incitements to violence against the “racists” and “deplorables” (non-leftist white people) who they deem responsible for the election of Trump and all of America’s domestic problems.

To do justice to the person and the organization that funded his work (The American Jewish Committee), rather than referring to these people as "racists" or "deplorables," we should all, henceforth, start exclusively referring to them as "fascists."

    * Some observers have criticized what they saw as a strongly politicized agenda to The Authoritarian Personality. Social critic Christopher Lasch argued that by equating mental health with left-wing politics and associating right-wing politics with an invented “authoritarian” pathology, the book's goal was to eliminate antisemitism by “subjecting the American people to what amounted to collective psychotherapy—by treating them as inmates of an insane asylum.”

yes, but is it a winning strategy?

remember how Clinton and Gore would court the working class white male vote?

    https://urbanintellectuals.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/clinton.png

but the 2016 election changed all that, and the Dems have morphed into the identity politics party of butt hurt non-whites. Which pushes all self-respecting whites into the party of Tweedledee.

today's election will give a lot of clues as to what exactly this new paradigm portends for the ZUSA.

left wing violence against people perceived as “deplorables”

so long as they're not being shot to pieces, as in Vegas and Texas and elsewhere, I actually like to see the Deplorables get bloody. Especially the ones on the fence, and are still scared of being called names, like 'racist'. I want to see them get their arses kicked and get a bloody nose from the Antifa and BLM crews. I like to see the shitlibs demanding the American flag come down as a racist symbol, and for all the black athletes to demand white America bow its collective head in shame for its historic crimes and its intractable and endemic racism that all whites are collectively guilty of.

I'd like to see more and more of that and see it explode into violence, where apathetic and cud-chewing whites learn about diversity up close and personal. Yes sir. That's the ticket.

Trump, FOX and others on the Kosher right are trying to frame this as strictly a mental health issue so they don’t have to deal with the problem of left wing jihad that’s kicked in to high gear since his election.

Trump should do all he can to frame it as leftwing rage and hatred of traditional Americans, white and black. I think it's very smart the way Faux News shows those antifa thugs breaking windows, and burning the flag.

They wanted a demographic fait accompli before the political parties ever divided along racial lines. They wanted to make sure whitey was a doomed minority before the violence and division happened, but now Trump forced the issue, by reaching out to the 'forgotten man'. And now there's still hope of reversing the inevitable doom of the white American into a Zimbabwe type of property forfeit and status as second class citizen in every capacity. Not just jobs and university admissions, but unable to even own property.

They did it to the Kulaks, and they'd do it to us too in a New York minute, but Trump upset the timing.

Now it's popcorn theater to see how it unfolds..

    Cheers

To do justice to the person and the organization that funded his work (The American Jewish Committee), rather than referring to these people as “racists” or “deplorables,” we should all, henceforth, start exclusively referring to them as “fascists.”

    * Some observers have criticized what they saw as a strongly politicized agenda to The Authoritarian Personality. Social critic Christopher Lasch argued that by equating mental health with left-wing politics and associating right-wing politics with an invented “authoritarian” pathology, the book’s goal was to eliminate antisemitism by “subjecting the American people to what amounted to collective psychotherapy—by treating them as inmates of an insane asylum.”

yes, but is it a winning strategy?

remember how Clinton and Gore would court the working class white male vote?

    @Rurik

A suggested compromise was to saw the arms off

to leave the Union, to secede, as Jefferson and John Adams voted to secede from Britain in 1776.

    ~ did it for me.

when they tossed the principles of the Constitution into the toilet, I knew the charade was over, and it was all now a pathetic fraud.

now I long for the day that whitey finally says 'enough!', and secedes not just in his heart, but legally and spiritually and in ever other way.

Like the buildings falling over in the movie Idiocracy.

    https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/static.nextnature.net/app/uploads/2010/12/idio-city.jpg

we should embrace our new reality with proper contempt

amen but there doesn’t seem to be even an embryonic secession movement.
