Our aim is to “starve the whole population — men, women, and children, old and young, wounded and sound — into submission,” said First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill.

He was speaking of Germany at the outset of the Great War of 1914-1918. Americans denounced as inhumane this starvation blockade that would eventually take the lives of a million German civilians.

Yet when we went to war in 1917, a U.S. admiral told British Prime Minister Lloyd George, “You will find that it will take us only two months to become as great criminals as you are.”

After the Armistice of Nov. 11, 1918, however, the starvation blockade was not lifted until Germany capitulated to all Allied demands in the Treaty of Versailles.

As late as March 1919, four months after the Germans laid down their arms, Churchill arose in Parliament to exult, “We are enforcing the blockade with rigor, and Germany is very near starvation.”

So grave were conditions in Germany that Gen. Sir Herbert Plumer protested to Lloyd George in Paris that morale among his troops on the Rhine was sinking from seeing “hordes of skinny and bloated children pawing over the offal from British cantonments.”

The starvation blockade was a war crime and a crime against humanity. But the horrors of the Second World War made people forget this milestone on the Western road to barbarism.

A comparable crime is being committed today against the poorest people in the Arab world — and with the complicity of the United States.

Saudi Arabia, which attacked and invaded Yemen in 2015 after Houthi rebels dumped over a pro-Saudi regime in Sanaa and overran much of the country, has imposed a land, sea and air blockade, after the Houthis fired a missile at Riyadh this month that was shot down.

The Saudis say it was an Iranian missile, fired with the aid of Hezbollah, and an “act of war” against the kingdom. The Houthis admit to firing the missile, but all three deny Iran and Hezbollah had any role.

Whatever the facts of the attack, what the Saudis, with U.S. support, are doing today with this total blockade of that impoverished country appears to be both inhumane and indefensible.

Almost 90 percent of Yemen’s food, fuel and medicine is imported, and these imports are being cut off. The largest cities under Houthi control, the port of Hodaida and Sanaa, the capital, have lost access to drinking water because the fuel needed to purify the water is not there.

Thousands have died of cholera. Hundreds of thousands are at risk. Children are in danger from a diphtheria epidemic. Critical drugs and medicines have stopped coming in, a death sentence for diabetics and cancer patients.

If airfields and ports under Houthi control are not allowed to open and the necessities of life and humanitarian aid are not allowed to flow in, the Yemenis face famine and starvation.

What did these people do to deserve this? What did they do to us that we would assist the Saudis in doing this to them?

The Houthis are not al-Qaida or ISIS. Those are Sunni terrorist groups, and the Houthis detest them.

Is this now the American way of war? Are we Americans, this Thanksgiving and Christmas, prepared to collude in a human rights catastrophe that will engender a hatred of us among generations of Yemeni and stain the name of our country?

ORDER IT NOW

Saudis argue that the specter of starvation will turn the Yemeni people against the rebels and force the Houthi to submit. But what if the policy fails. What if the Houthis, who have held the northern half of the country for more than two years, do not yield? What then?

Are we willing to play passive observer as thousands and then tens of thousands of innocent civilians — the old, sick, weak, and infants and toddlers first — die from a starvation blockade supported by the mighty United States of America?

Without U.S. targeting and refueling, Saudi planes could not attack the Houthis effectively and Riyadh could not win this war. But when did Congress authorize this war on a nation that never attacked us?

President Obama first approved U.S. support for the Saudi war effort. President Trump has continued the Obama policy, and the war in Yemen has now become his war, and his human rights catastrophe.

Yemen today is arguably the worst humanitarian crisis on earth, and America’s role in it is undeniable and indispensable.

If the United States were to tell Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman that we were no longer going to support his war in Yemen, the Saudis would have to accept the reality that they have lost this war.

Indeed, given Riyadh’s failure in the Syria civil war, its failure to discipline rebellious Qatar, its stalemated war and human rights disaster in Yemen, Trump might take a hard second look at the Sunni monarchy that is the pillar of U.S. policy in the Persian Gulf.

Patrick J. Buchanan is the author of a new book, “Nixon’s White House Wars: The Battles That Made and Broke a President and Divided America Forever.”

  1. I am pleased that Mr. Buchanan has called a spade a spade and war criminals war criminals, even to the point of stating the obvious role of the US regime in the atrocities. If this policy is not changed, the results of this barbarism will complete the destruction of the reputation of the yankee imperium.

The Saudis have taken a page from Israeli book. Just like Israel, all Saudis have to do is to blame everything on Iran and Hezbollah. With complete blockade of Yemen, if Iran or Hezbollah can smuggle through a missile then it reflects on the incompetence of Saudis. If they can’t even prevent a small thing like that, how can they expect to win the war.

Yemen today is arguably the worst humanitarian crisis on earth, and America’s role in it is undeniable and indispensable.

In a way, I don’t blame the Saudis for these atrocities. I blame the US and the entire world. The US must feel really tall supporting a bully like Saudi Arabia to help starve small children. A few fake pictures of victims of sarin gas in Syria could cause Ivanka and Donald Trump to feel sick to their stomach and help launch 59 cruise missiles on Syria. I guess those few Syrian children must be special. Who cares about the millions of starving children in Yemen? I am sure both Ivanka and Donald sleep well at night. They surely must have enjoyed their Thanksgiving dinner watching starving Yemeni children on cable news.

And what is United Nations and Human Rights organizations doing other than complaining every few days. Why isn’t the ICC starting a case of crimes against humanity against the United States, Saudi Arabia and her allies.

Without U.S. targeting and refueling, Saudi planes could not attack the Houthis effectively and Riyadh could not win this war. But when did Congress authorize this war on a nation that never attacked us?

Modern day presidents don’t need Congress’ approval to start a war. The Congress has never declared wars against Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, and Pakistan. Authorization of war is not the same as declaration of war. None of these nations attacked the United States. Ironically, the one nation that did attack the United States is being protected by the United States Congress.

The silence by the American people is so deafening and is a reflection of how low the moral values of this nation have fallen. Where are the Senators Fulbright and McGovern who used to be the conscience of this country or journalists like Walter Cronkite?

Since Houthis did not attack the US nor have they killed any Christians they desserve to be bombed instead of dropping food packets on them. Is that your thinking? Buchanan's question was, why are we helping Saudis maintain this blockade? Why do you call the Houthis "Muslim fanatics?"

The situation in Yemen can no longer be labelled as Saudi-only genocide. US is equal partner in this atrocity. US is fully complicit in this crime against humanity.

What evidence do you have that the Houthis are Muslim fanatics? Surely, everyone has a right to be a Muslim fanatic in their own country anyway, so long as it doesn't impinge on other nations and communities?

I certainly agree that the actions in Yemen as regards the actions of the US government are variously stupid and mean-spirited. But they have nothing to do with the misery of the Yemeni people, except to distract from the real issues.

What happens when a poor person who could maybe support two kids, had instead six or seven? Does this magically ‘create wealth?’ If so, how? Or perhaps it creates poverty. And what if everyone in a given country behaves that way? But we don’t have to speculate: we know the answer, and the answer is Yemen (and Bangladesh and India and Nigeria etc.).

Yemen has very little in the way of water supplies, even less than most other middle eastern countries. It could support a few million people, probably. Could it support tens of millions? Hundreds of millions? No. And this is nature making sure that the impossible does not happen.

This is NOT ‘climate change.’ This is the aquifers being drained dry, regardless of whether any given year was wetter or dryer than usual. So Yemen is dependent on imported food? And how did that happen? And if everyone has three times as many kids than they can support, how does this automatically result in the rest of the world giving them all the food they need? What makes the Yemeni people think this foreign largess will continue and allow then to breed their numbers to an unlimited amount? Oh, and according to wikipedia, about half the water that the Yemenis do have is used to grow the drug called ‘Khat.’

But as much as the behavior of the Yemeni people is perhaps not admirable, there is worse. That is those Western corporate whores who DEMAND that the secret to prosperity is for everyone to breed like a rodent, having as many children as possible as early as possible, and damn the consequences. These are the real villains here. The stupid Americans and their stupid allies are simply making the rubble bounce.

our 'allies' in the Middle East have been and continue to be the worst enemies of America the American people.

Starting with the "shitty little state".

these devil's alliances are, as you rightly point out, temporary and subject to change depending on what's good for the American people today.

Right now what's good for the American people is to tell the Saudis that they're on their own, and any trouble they get themselves into with their neighbors are their own problems to solve.

In exactly the same way we need to tell all the stone age, religious nut-cases over there that America is done waging wars for tribal gods of death and hate.

Starting with, as I mentioned - the shitty little state.

I'd like to see the Trump administration use the State Dept. and the Internet- to reach the Arabs and Persians in the street, and all Sunnis and Shiites; as to just who in the Middle East is and continues to be their collective enemy - for decades now. Because it is the same enemy that perpetrated the cowardly and treacherous attack on our Navy ship the USS Liberty, and the same enemy that watched our towers attacked in yet another cowardly and treacherous act of war on 9/11, and then danced around cheering the attack, as our citizens died horribly.

We all need to recognize the root of evil and war in that traumatized region of the world.

And the scum who are behind it all. Most of all we all need to repudiate the treasonous liars and foreign agents in our congress. Working for agents of that shitty little state, like Sheldon Adelson and so many other Israeli-firsters, and tell them to walk away from their jobs, or be fired.

Some have gotten the memo. Like Senators Flake and Corker. God had to send the message directly to McCain by way of merciful (to the rest of the world) divine providence. [Blessed be His will]

hopefully the rest of them will either get on board with the America-first agenda, or go rot in obscurity as vile traitors to their nation and people.

But the sooner these enemies of this nation, both foreign: like the House of Saud and Israel, and domestic, like the treasonous members of congress who have put the interests of foreign nations ahead of their oaths and their country - get the message; that we have not forgotten 9/11, and the evil that was done to us on that day. And now it's finally time to put America first, the better it will be for everyone, including the starving civilians in Yemen.

Trump implied it: America is not great anymore. There are no signs that it will become great again, quite the contrary it seems it is becoming smaller and skimpier by the day

...how can you justify killing off one group of allegedly Muslim fanatics by another group of (demonstrably proven) Muslim fanatics, the Saudis?
Why do I need to justify anything? For some reason or no reason these two are fighting. The Saudis are longtime American allies, the Houthis are not. That may change, but it is so for now. If you treat both the same, soon you will have no allies and no friends. Certainly so in this cruel Middle East. It is simple as that.

The Saudis are longtime American allies, the Houthis are not. That may change, but it is so for now. If you treat both the same, soon you will have no allies and no friends.

our ‘allies’ in the Middle East have been and continue to be the worst enemies of America the American people.

Starting with the “shitty little state”.

these devil’s alliances are, as you rightly point out, temporary and subject to change depending on what’s good for the American people today.

Right now what’s good for the American people is to tell the Saudis that they’re on their own, and any trouble they get themselves into with their neighbors are their own problems to solve.

In exactly the same way we need to tell all the stone age, religious nut-cases over there that America is done waging wars for tribal gods of death and hate.

Starting with, as I mentioned – the shitty little state.

I’d like to see the Trump administration use the State Dept. and the Internet- to reach the Arabs and Persians in the street, and all Sunnis and Shiites; as to just who in the Middle East is and continues to be their collective enemy – for decades now.

But the sooner these enemies of this nation, both foreign: like the House of Saud and Israel, and domestic, like the treasonous members of congress who have put the interests of foreign nations ahead of their oaths and their country – get the message; that we have not forgotten 9/11, and the evil that was done to us on that day. And now it’s finally time to put America first, the better it will be for everyone, including the starving civilians in Yemen.

Obviously starvation is a horrible fate that I wouldn’t wish on people who have never done me any harm, but the Yemenis should probably learn to live within the limits of the food they can produce domestically. Protip: you can’t use a blockade to starve people who grow their own food.

Saudis argue that the specter of starvation will turn the Yemeni people against the rebels and force the Houthi to submit. But what if the policy fails. What if the Houthis, who have held the northern half of the country for more than two years, do not yield? What then?

This is an excellent question, because according to Pat’s citation, Yemen grows more than 10% of it’s own food. Meaning, somewhere not far north of 10% of the Yemeni population can survive the blockade, if they keep all the food to themselves. The 10% of the country that is most devoted to the Houthis surviving, while the 90% that is less devoted dies off, might not seem like such a bad idea to the Houthi leadership.

    P. Buchanan:

Saudi Arabia, which attacked and invaded Yemen in 2015 after Houthi rebels dumped over a pro-Saudi regime in Sanaa and overran much of the country, has imposed a land, sea and air blockade, after the Houthis fired a missile at Riyadh this month that was shot down.

The Saudis say it was an Iranian missile, fired with the aid of Hezbollah, and an “act of war” against the kingdom. The Houthis admit to firing the missile, but all three deny Iran and Hezbollah had any role.

The Saudi led blockade has been ongoing for a long time, it is NOT a response to the Houthis firing missiles against Riyadh. It is the other way around… because of the Saudi aggression and blockade against their country, the Houthis have begun firing missiles against the Saudis.

The missiles are not Iranian, the Saudis are just lying.
Writes a retired German army officer on the conflict:
In a video message the former Yemeni president explained that these missiles were from the large stash he bought before the ongoing war broke out. According to IHS Janes these missiles are of North Korean origin (pdf) and were modified by the experienced Yemeni army missile forces.

Yemen today is arguably the worst humanitarian crisis on earth, and America’s role in it is undeniable and indispensable.

The same can be said about many, if not most of the worst humanitarian crises of the past century +, so it’s fitting that Mr B began with a fine capsule summary of the outrageous vinvolvement of the US in the humanitarian crisis known as WW1.

if you're a Zionist, then you are de facto in favor of massive immigration of all non-whites into all white nations and commit ethnic suicide posthaste

It is a fundamental tenet of Zionism that just as Israel must be a racially pure Jewish state, so too concurrently all white nations must flood their countries with millions upon millions of non-whites.

Just ask the neocons, the uber-Zionists who determine policy. They all demand massive immigration. Sheldon and the Kristols and all of them. The entire Zionist power structure, from the Hollywood liberals to the National Review neoccucks to the Weekly Standard neocons.

that's why their lickspittles like McCain and Rubio and Jeb are all down on their knees for more and more immigrants.

That is, in fact, why they hate Trump and the Deplorables, because of the rhetoric that is anti-immigrant.

So you need to get with the program

    Ron Paul:

The tragedy in Yemen is the result of foreign military intervention in the internal affairs of that country. It started with the “Arab Spring” which had all the fingerprints of State Department meddling, and it escalated with 2015’s unprovoked Saudi attack on the country to re-install Riyadh’s preferred leader. Thousands of innocent civilians have been killed and millions more are at risk as starvation and cholera rage.

We are told that US foreign policy should reflect American values. So how can Washington support Saudi Arabia – a tyrannical state with one of the worst human rights record on earth – as it commits by what any measure is a genocide against the Yemeni people? The UN undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs warned just last week that Yemen faces “the largest famine the world has seen for many decades with millions of victims.” The Red Cross has just estimated that a million people are vulnerable in the cholera epidemic that rages through Yemen.

And why is there a cholera epidemic? Because the Saudi government – with US support – has blocked every port of entry to prevent critical medicine from reaching suffering Yemenis. This is not a war. It is cruel murder.

The United States is backing Saudi aggression against Yemen by cooperating in every way with the Saudi military. Targeting, intelligence, weapons sales, and more. The US is a partner in Saudi Arabia’s Yemen crimes.

just as the ZUS is a puppet of the Zionists

we all know it serves zero actual interests of the people of United States to support the uber-corrupt regime in Saudi Arabia, except in the narrow sphere of the MIC.

where as the costs of such a devil's alliance to the American people and our national soul, are incalculable.

but not to worry, when serving 'the shitty little state', there is no cost too towering and far-reaching in our collective obeisance to Israel - to pay.

Also, as usual, the ZUSA supports Al-Qaeda, directly or, more often, indirectly… ample evidence of it in Syria, before also in Libya… Ron Paul writes on this issue in Yemen:

In fact it has been reported numerous times in the mainstream media that US intervention on behalf of the Saudis in Yemen is actually a boost to al-Qaeda in the country. Al-Qaeda is at war with the Houthis who had taken control of much of the country because the Houthis practice a form of Shi’a Islam they claim is tied to Iran. We are fighting on the same side as al-Qaeda in Yemen.

Certainly I am Zionist. Regarding Muslim fanatics, just this morning one group killed 300 other Muslim fanatics praying in a mosque in El Arish, in the Sinai peninsula. The Tsar says everybody has full right to be a Muslim fanatic. Even with my very low - subhuman in fact - IQ - I can see that these are evil people. I hope for your good that President Trump will not allow them to put down a foot in the USA.

Certainly I am Zionist. Regarding Muslim fanatics, … …Trump will not allow them to put down a foot in the USA.

    but dumb ass..

if you’re a Zionist, then you are de facto in favor of massive immigration of all non-whites into all white nations and commit ethnic suicide posthaste

The entire Zionist power structure, from the Hollywood liberals to the National Review neoccucks to the Weekly Standard neocons.

that’s why their lickspittles like McCain and Rubio and Jeb are all down on their knees for more and more immigrants.

That is, in fact, why they hate Trump and the Deplorables, because of the rhetoric that is anti-immigrant.

So you need to get with the program

Rurik, I am a Zionist and just wrote the opposite. Your delirium is remarkable, Sir.

Regarding the Zionist program, it simply refers to build a safe country for the Jewish people in its historical land. It has absolutely nothing to do with American immigration or whatever. If anything, we want to bring American Jews to Israel because we see no future for them in the exile. Because of assimilation and because of people like you.

"Jewish people in its historical land"

Just curious, what 'history' would that be?
The 1948 Nakba and ethnic cleansing of 800,000 Palestinians whose home was in this land for centuries?
Or the Khazar heritage of a Turkish/European race that adopted a religion from third century Babylon that denies the Bible and mocks God?

Only Christians have a claim to the lineage of Biblical Israel.

Interesting though that Germany was not only a safe place for Jews but it was also where they were allowed to prosper greatly until meddling by the banker backed Zionists turned everything upside down, much like in the USA of today, come to think of it.

Instead of banging on and on about the need for a safe place for Jews you might want to ask yourself why it is that so many previously safe places for Jews became unsafe for them. Your historical fantasies will ultimately bring everything to grief for everyone.

Kushner and the Saudi Princeling see eye to eye on these matters.

What Kushner sees – Trump does.

    Isn’t that great!

p.s. The Saudis are using 10,000 Sudanese mercenaries to do their fighting. Paki pilots to do their bombing. They farm out their torture. And Jews do their banking.

Maybe the Germans should not have started the First World War. Or the second.

    they didn't

the first one was started by the Serbs vs. the Hapsburgs, and the Germans were dragged in as the allies of the Austrians, only to be betrayed by Wilson's ruse of 'Fourteen Points' into laying down their arms, and then being starved into signing the Germans into slavery.

the second was started by a combination of things, including the genocidal Bolsheviks/Soviets intention to enslave all of Europe, (which became obvious at the end of the war when they were only allowed to enslave half of Europe).

Plus the intransigence of the Polish colonels regarding a corridor for Germany to protect its citizens from persecution in places like Danzig.

Hitler verily begged the West for peace. But the Zionists would not allow it, and demanded war.

So FDR instituted a naval blockade of Japan in order to get the US dragged in as well, and the intention was always to destroy an ascendant Germany. Something all the envious nations like England didn't want to see. It hurt their butts to see Germany thrive in the sun. And look at them now.. Pakistani men operate rape gangs that target only British school girls, while the pedophiles that run the government and media look the other way.

That was some "victory" England! Soon the Jews will have completely destroyed every semblance of British culture and your people will languish under the rule of your former colonial slaves. It will be the black man with the whip in his hand, and your daughters will bear his fruits.

Sweden too, even tho they had very little to do with those wars, they too must be blended out of existence, because they look too much like Nazis.

I wonder... when the International Jewish banksters start WWIII, because Russia has wrestled herself out of their death-grip, who is going to be willing to fight their third world war in order to create their Orwellian dystopia once and for all? Your son? Your daughter? Will you send them to the Middle East or Russia to fight the next Jewish war between the Gentiles?

Yemen has had explosive population growth and has a very young population on top of being very poor and very religious Moslems. Add this war on top of all that and you can see what a disaster this is.

So guess who'll be expected to take in millions of them as refugees.

The Rohingyas are the same way, the ones fleeing to Pakistan are having 8-18 babies.
The Muslim nations will not take them despite the peaceful, charitable tenants of Islam (snark).
They will be used by DC neocon forces to destabilize the region to make it easier to control for the billionaires.
