To observe the decades-long paralysis of America’s political elite in controlling her borders calls to mind the insight of James Burnham in 1964 — “Liberalism is the ideology of Western suicide.”

What the ex-Trotskyite turned Cold Warrior meant was that by faithfully following the tenets of liberalism, the West would embrace suicidal policies that would bring about the death of her civilization.

The crisis on our Southern border, where the left, and not only the left, is wailing that we cannot turn away desperate people fleeing wicked regimes and remain true to our liberal values, is a case in point.

To assert that we cannot take all these people in, that we must send them back and seal out border for our survival, is to be called a variety of names — racist, xenophobe, nativist — all of which translate into “illiberal.”

But as we continue our descent to Third World status, perhaps we should explore more deeply the “diversity” that has of late come to be regarded as America’s most treasured attribute.

In 1960, we were not nearly so diverse. Nine in 10 Americans professed a Christian faith. Nine in 10 Americans traced their ancestry back to Europe. E Pluribus Unum. We were one nation and one people.

Since then, we have become the Brazil of North America, a multiracial, multilingual, multiethnic, multicultural “universal nation” unlike any that has existed in the history of the West.

And if we look abroad at those Western nations traveling along this perilous path with us, we can see clearly now our future

Before the 1960s, Europe never knew mass immigration. And after the terrible ethnic cleansing of Germans after World War II, most of Europe’s nations were ethnically homogeneous.

Several were not. Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, the USSR. At the end of the Cold War, with freedom, all three came apart. Where we had three nations, suddenly we had 24 and such sub-nations as South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Transnistria.

Now Scots are seeking to break away from England, Catalans from Spain, Corsicans from France, Venetians from Italy and Flemish from Belgium, though these peoples have lived together for centuries.

Crimeans have gone back to Russia, while Chechens and other peoples of the Caucasus are fighting to break free of Russia.

The roots of these secessionist movements may be traced to economics, ethnicity, history, religion, language, culture and borders.

Then there are the rising millions of Muslims in Europe who are not assimilating, as Catholic Irish and Catholic Germans did in a Protestant USA, but are replicating within the West the countries and cultures whence they came. They are separating themselves, by ethnicity, culture and faith, from the Western societies into which they have migrated.

Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Dominicans, Somalis and Arabs in America also build replicas of the countries and cultures whence they came. Thus, we take on the aspect of an empire. And empires fall apart.

The melting pot, rejected by our elites as an instrument of nativist bigots, is history.

Libya, Syria and Iraq are coming apart, as did Sudan and Ethiopia. The Kurds seek to carve a nation out of Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria. A Sunni-Shia sectarian war impends.

Christians are being persecuted, martyred and expelled from Islamic nations. In Myanmar, Muslims are brutalized by Buddhists. In Western China, ethnic Uighurs resort to terrorism in a war of secession to establish a new East Turkestan.

Disintegration, separatism and secessionism, for racial, religious, and cultural causes, are a phenomenon common now to Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Are we somehow immune?

The world is boiling with racial, tribal, cultural and moral conflict. People carry in their hearts the seeds of these conflicts. The notion that they will come here and be converted into Ozzie-and-Harriet Americans may be a bit utopian.

America is becoming a microcosm of a world on fire.

Why are we doing this? Why are we inviting the world into the USA? Was there some grievous flaw in the America of Ike and JFK that must be expunged? Some sin for which we must do penance?

What is coming is predictable, and has been predicted.

By 2042, Americans of European ancestry will be a minority in a country built by Europeans. “Anglos” are now a minority in California, New Mexico and Texas. Hispanics will soon be the majority in all four border states with Mexico.

And should Hispanics decide not to give their electoral votes to any presidential candidate who does not promise to erase the border with Latin America, that would mean the end of the United States as we know it.

Americans are already deep in a culture war over morality — marijuana, abortion, same-sex marriage. We are already racially polarized over affirmative action and income inequality.

And when we have ceased to be an English-speaking, Christian country and become instead an Asian-Hispanic-African-American-white nation, with large Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, agnostic and atheist minorities, and no defined borders, or common faith and culture, what holds us together?

And when did we vote for this future?

LOL what are you talking about? We’re not becoming Africa or India, Pat. Get your brain checked out.

Sounds like Pat has bought the Chinese government-controlled media spin on that issue.

You need to travel to Europe and see what a truly first world country looks like.

  6. Gore Vidal was often right in his predictions though mostly to the left and with an air above it all. Pat from the right is often correct in his predictions. Gore is gone so too late for more. Pat needs as Nader did often to step up to the big plate in 2016.

Read Robert Putnam’s work; he shows the damage inflicted on society by the loss of a common culture.

  8. Brazil generally speaks only one official language: Portuguese. In addition to white immigrant descendants (e.g. Portugal, Italy, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Lebanon, Syria), the great majority of mixed-raced people in Brazil are more white Caucasian in autosomal results due to heavier loads of white male paternal ancestry (a lot of white daddies in the gene pool across the board).

  10. Why save the nation state – in the last 100 years it has killed 100 million people or more. Billions have been and are coerced by their own national government. Who needs it? Why concentrate all that power in a few hands? It just is not working for humanity. Even in America.

The good America that I grew up in – is no longer good. Liberal Jewish divisive politics has destroyed our culture – those who were thought to be good are now bad – and those who were thought to be bad are now favored in our society.

The banking oligarchs are in charge – the fear of bucking them is palpable. The thing that we must fear the most is a coming American Hitler – just like Germany post WWI, we face a debt that cannot be paid back to the private bankers. Some day there must be a default. Either the taxpayers or the bankers must lose. There is NO way that this can come out good.

Let America and the other nation states slowly break apart into private regional city states.

  11. Maybe, if the US stopped ruining the countries of Latin America (see Bultler), the people would rather stay home.

NAFT is a good thing, Mexico has to stop farm sub’s, but not the US, oh my. Small farms out of business, and they come here, sounded like a good plan.

  12. Poor choice of example by Pat. Brazil is more like the US South– multiracial but monocultural, more or less– and with no Cajuns.

However, I question whether Portuguese is actually official there, in the sense of an explicit statute stating “Portuguese shall be…” When, and more importantly, why, would they pass such a law?

The reason English has been official in Canada for a century and a half, and is still not in the UK and US, is that they needed it and we didn’t. And if you need it, it’s probably too late.

  14. In addition, most African ancestry in Brazil was taken from Angola (Southwestern Africa, very near Namibia and South Africa) and Mozambique (East Africa). In other words, there’s a big representation of East Africans in the African gene pool of Brazil.

While the average mixed-raced person in Brazil is a quadroon to octoroon (much fewer mulattos compared to a century ago), there’s a distinct mulatto look in Brazil. The great majority of mulattas in Brazil resemble women such Micaela Reis, or Aline Prado. Their facial features are more like Ethiopian women, Horn of East Africa (e.g. Liya Kebede, Sara Nuru).

Brazilian women are just prettier because well, for some reason, certain East African faces show Caucasian features easier in the face. There’s not a lot of bloated West African faces.

  15. In addition, Brazil is 65% Roman Catholic, followed by 22% Protestant and 8% professing no religion. Thereby Brazil not only has an official language (almost nobody speaks tribal Amerindian languages), but it also has a predominant religion.

  16. It’s true that Brasil is nowhere near as Multilingual as The United States. Almost everybody in Brasil is united by a common language, whether you are a blond haired and blue eyed German in Santa Catarina or a Negro in a favela in Rio De Janeiro or a Japanese in Sao Paulo.

  17. Look, Pat, I’m from South Central Texas, and the comment that Mexicans are forming their own little non-assimilating communities, is–at least here–simply hogwash. Mexicans and Texans have, over a relatively short period of time, assimilated to each other. Furthermore, the America you talk about never existed here, and never will, because we are a predominantly Catholic, German-Czech-Irish-Polish-Mexican-Black state. I agree with one of the above comments that the eventual breakup of the U.S. is the only real option to prevent ethnic warfare. Let each area organically develop our own ethnicity which reflects both the biology and landscape of our people.
I mean, it’s like you have no scope–the America that you talk about may have existed in certain cities at certain times, but Texas? Nope. Leave us be–keep this disturbing Anglo-American post-Protestant Triumphalism virus out of our DNA if you please. I mean, I’m a quarter Puritan immigrant to the Americas, an Adams, but even though that technically makes me a “native” Anglo, I have long since realized how weak and twisted the Enlightenment ideology really is–how easily it breaks under the pressure of reality. How can you still feel any loyalty or love for America as some sort of general, homogeneous fantasy? It makes me sick at heart for you.

  18. “I agree with one of the above comments that the eventual breakup of the U.S. is the only real option to prevent ethnic warfare.”

This sentiment has been around for the past 100 years and NOTHING has resulted from this supposed widening chasm between ethnic groups that will lead to inevitable violence.

  19. @ Jason J,

If you look at the issues facing California I think you’ll see what Buchanan is concerned about. Alex Alexiev wrote in 2009:

“For a closer glimpse of what’s in store for California, look at the Los Angeles Unified School District, the largest in California and the second largest in the country. Of its roughly 700,000 students, almost three-quarters are Hispanic, 8.9 percent are white, and 11.2 percent are black. More than half of the Latino students (about 300,000) are “English learners” and, depending on whether you believe the district or independent scholars, anywhere between a third and a half drop out of high school, following significant attrition in middle school. A recent study by UC Santa Barbara’s California Dropout Research Project estimates that high-school dropouts in 2007 alone will cost the state $24.2 billion in future economic losses…

Even those who graduate aren’t necessarily headed to success. According to one study, 69 percent of Latino high-school graduates “do not meet college requirements or satisfy prerequisites for most jobs that pay a living wage.” ..

California currently ranks 40th among the 50 states in college-attendance rates, and it already faces a significant shortage of college graduates. Studies have shown that the economy will need 40 percent of its workers to be college-educated by 2020, compared with today’s 32 percent. Given the aging white population (average age, 42), many of these new graduates will have to come from the burgeoning Latino immigrant population (average age, 26). By one estimate, this would require tripling of the number of college-educated immigrants, an impossibility if current trends hold. The state’s inability to improve the educational attainment of its residents will result in a “substantial decline in per capita income” and “place California last among the 50 states” by 2020, according to a study by the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems.

  20. The first 50 of the past 100 years we were pretty much 90% Anglo-European, and racial discrimination against non-whites was actively practiced. Lots more variables now, and the money for welfare and centralized enforcement of civil rights is running out.
