Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, billed as a celebration of the First Amendment and a tribute to journalists who “speak truth to power,” has to be the worst advertisement in memory for our national press corps.

Comedian Michelle Wolf, the guest speaker, recited one filthy joke after another at the expense of President Trump and his people, using words that would have gotten her kicked out of school not so long ago.

Media critic Howard Kurtz said he had “never seen a performance like that,” adding that Wolf “was not only nasty but dropping F-bombs on live television.” Some of her stuff was grungier than that.

The anti-Trump media at the black-tie dinner laughed and whooped it up, and occasionally “oohed” as Wolf went too far even for them, lending confirmation to Trump’s depiction of who and what they are.

While the journalistic elite at the black-tie dinner was reveling in the raw sewage served up by Wolf, Trump had just wrapped up a rally in Michigan.

The contrast between the two assemblies could not have been more stark. We are truly two Americas now.

“Why would I want to be stuck in a room with a bunch of fake-news liberals who hate me?” said Trump in an email to supporters, adding that he would much rather “spend the evening with my favorite deplorables who love our movement and love America.”

Her objective in arranging this year’s dinner, said WHCA president Margaret Talev, was “in unifying the country,” but “we may have fallen a little bit short on that goal.” The lady has a gift for understatement.

With revulsion at Wolf’s performance coming in strong on Sunday, journalists began to call for a halt to inviting comedians, with some urging an end to the annual dinner that Trump has twice boycotted.

These dinners are becoming “close to suicidal for the press’s credibility,” writes Margaret Sullivan in The Washington Post.

How did the White House Correspondents’ Association descend to this depth?

In 1962, along with friends at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, this writer hung out outside the dinner, as we talked to legendary Pulitzer Prize-wining investigative reporter Clark Mollenhoff.

A memorable evening and though most of the press there had probably been JFK voters in 1960, these journalists would never have sat still for Saturday night’s festival of contempt.

Nor has the older Gridiron dinner descended to this depth.

A white-tie affair at the Statler Hilton, it is put on by the Gridiron Club, one of whose rules is, “Women are always present.” Nothing is to be said from the podium that might affront a lady. And the jokes from the rival party speakers are to “singe, but not burn.”

What happened to the WHCA dinner? The evening has become less a celebration of the First Amendment than a celebration of the press themselves, how wonderful they are and how indispensable they are to our democracy.

Yet in the eyes of tens of millions of their countrymen, they are seen not as “speaking truth to power,” but as using their immense power over American communications to punish their enemies, advance their own agendas, and, today, bring down a president.

The press denounces Trump for calling the media “the enemy of the people.” But is there any doubt that the mainstream media are, by and large, enemies of Trump and looking to Robert Mueller to solve their problem?

Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ dinner recalls to mind T.S. Eliot’s insight that, “Things reveal themselves passing away.”

It was saturated with detestation of Trump, his people, and what they represent.

How did we get here?

ORDER IT NOW

Like our cultural elite in Hollywood and the arts, and our academic elite in the Ivy League, our media elite is a different breed than we knew in the Eisenhower-Kennedy era. Our institutions passed through the great cultural, social and moral revolution of the late 20th century, and they have emerged different on the other side.

Most of the Washington press corps at that dinner have next to nothing in common with the folks who voted for Trump and cheered him in Michigan. And Hillary Clinton surely spoke for many of the Beltway media laughing at Wolf’s jokes when she said:

“(Y)ou could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. … The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic … (Trump) tweets and retweets their offensive hateful mean-spirited rhetoric. Now, some of those folks — they are irredeemable, but thankfully they are not America.”

It’s good to know what folks really think of you.

Perhaps, rather than seeking to create a synthetic unity, those who so deeply and viscerally disagree — on politics, morality, culture and even good and evil — ought peacefully to go their separate ways.

We both live in the USA, but we inhabit different countries.

Patrick J. Buchanan is the author of a new book, “Nixon’s White House Wars: The Battles That Made and Broke a President and Divided America Forever.”

Thanks for the article, Sir. You are so right.

This again proves that liberals are a gutter people. They have no morals, no shame, no culture.

Comedy that is simply not at all funny is always going to be problematic.

Modern comedians – and their scriptwriters – slide away from being genuinely amusing to recycling joke-style propaganda points. Ms Wolf has merely extended that a little with full-on abuse of approved targets.

To repeat: the problem here is that this is not comedy.

She is referring to the “obscenity of fictions” that her crowd attribute to Trump – when the real “obscenity of fictions” is the bizarre idea that the current US press corps is an independent and respectable group of professionals coming together to celebrate their First Amendment freedom.

Every journalist there knew that they have exactly zero freedom to take non-PC positions on a whole range of subjects, and that the whole thing was rather an obscene celebration of Jewish power.

  8. a tribute to journalists who “speak truth to power,”

I like Vox Day’s characterization of “speaking power to truth.”

This is the age-old play of people insisting with even more conviction that things are as they’ve always been even as the status quo slips away from them. The Internet is killing the press’s business model; anybody with a blog and a cellphone is a journalist now, which is why most reporters are poorly-paid contractors in their 20′s and the large media outlets have to rely on rich sugar daddies. The Correspondents’ Dinner can go back to being a trade association banquet. So can the Oscars.

Trump is doing the same thing to Conservatism, Inc. They hate him with every bit of the venom that Michelle Wolf does.

  9. Stick says:

Was anyone surprised by this display of contempt for those who disagree with Manhattan Media? I wasn’t. Other than being a pretty good Debbie Wasserman Schultz impression, there was nothing even remotely humorous in that ugly yenta’s routine, but what is to be expected?

“Comedy” has become an entirely kosher affair, in which it is fashionable to mock all of the sacred symbols of Christendom, but absolutely forbidden to touch the sacred symbols of Israel/Judentum, the sacrosanct “people of color”, or the inhabitants of modern day Sodom, which has no defined borders.

I would applaud the removal of all barriers of political correctness and the return to real humor, which would obviously involve blackface and banjos, the ridicule of Jewish tackiness, greed and artlessness and the mimicry of organized faggotry. There is enough material there for a thousand years worth of comedic routine.

Great comment. I thought she was funny too. Comedians have a saying that a joke will wound according to the truth content. Those jokes wounded deeply. Comedy should be a blood sport and needs to be enjoyed live as both the context and dynamics are altered when televised.

As you stated, the unwanted immigration and endless and ruinous wars are the real obscenity yet are accepted by most as normality. It is high time people were offended, deeply so.

Debra (Tiny Duck), I think it’s more a reflection of how crass the culture is, led by liberals of course. It used to be, for example decades ago on SNL, that making fun of everyone, including conservatives, was funny, but now its lowest common denominator and filth. It wouldn’t be funny regardless of the target. It also has, as has been the case particularly the last 20 years, a lot of anger–which is transparent and would ruin any sincere attempt at a joke. These people are mad that their “guy” didn’t win, and they just can’t accept it. They come across like Hilary–super bitter. But I guess that’s why you are here too.

It’s not too different than attempting to save a marriage with irreconcilable differences or trying to open a computer file with the wrong software program. It’s hopeless, and the sooner we come to that realization, the better off we’ll all be. There is no meeting of the minds on even the simplest things that rational, mature people ought to be able to agree on (e.g., whether people from other countries have a right to pour into our country and essentially colonize it, whether a conservative ought to be able to give a speech at a college campus without threat of violence, whether the police ought to be supported and not be attacked both physically and with outright lies as in “Hands up, don’t shoot!”, whether it is reasonable to expect highly-paid athletes to stand for the national anthem, and on and on and on).

I decided a year or two ago, after a Left-leaning co-worker (a Canadian, no less) attempted to engage me in debate after hours about why Clinton should have won, based on the popular vote, and how the electoral college should be done away, that I was never going to give a Leftie the satisfaction of debating me about anything ever again. And here I thought that comedy was supposed to be fun.

Gladiators dueled in a “blood sport” which by definition is two opponents, equally matched, each armed with an offensive and a defensive weapon. A press conference is just such a duel.

What you propose is a one-sided affair, all ganging up on one defenseless victim, who has to sit there and grin and bear it.

What you call “sport”, most people would call sadism.

  31. anonymous[339] • Disclaimer says:

I’ve marveled at Trump’s cat-like political instincts. He got himself elected by marching to his own drummer and being able to critically assess the abilities of his advisors. The other career politicians were all totally scripted, artificial phonies. He made the right move by ditching this supposed press dinner and instead went out and further cultivated his base. Sitting there being humiliated by those press nobodies would have made him look bad and unpresidential. Instead, he keept building up the foundation on which he really stands, the ordinary anonymous masses out there and not the freak show types. The media is a heavily centralized, top-down business run by a small group at the top who have decided to embark upon the greatest hate campaign in living memory. The various press personalities are just colorful hirelings of the people actually running the show. Right now we’ve got the leaders of the two Koreas meeting and talking about a rapprochement between them. This has been an area of tension and possible war since the end of the Korean war so this represents a huge achievement. This is Nobel Prize worthy yet what do we hear about this? Comedians have greater expectations placed on them that a guy telling jokes at work or in a bar. It is expected of them “to go too far” and to provoke a response. There is a long held tradition of comedians speaking truth to power. Lame jokes won’t get much of a reaction in a comedy club and the ones we remember are usually the ones who pushed buttons, very hard! Lenny Bruce, Richard Prior, Bill Hicks and the like. Every joke has a target and she skewered some choice ones, but to those wanting more gentle humour you can usually find it on TeeVee.

I read no newspaper now but Ritchie’s, and in that chiefly the advertisements, for they contain the only truths to be relied on in a newspaper. I feel a much greater interest in knowing what has passed two or three thousand years ago, than in what is now passing. Watch the video again and look at the crowd shots. There are people laughing and laughing hard, at times many of them. By definition that means either she was being funny or there was some sort of nitrous oxide being pumped into the room. On a technical level the set ups were sound and frequently truth based with strong punchlines. She was reading from notes because most of the material was purpose written and not expected to be memorised. She wasn’t invited there to tell jokes about aeroplane food or to rag on about her exes, she was invited there to ruffle the feathers of those who dwell in the world of political theatre and she succeeded. She was a known quantity too.

Only a fool would invite some one like Roseanne Barr and then complain that she was coarse and used bad words, same thing. Only a fool would say that Lenny bruce wasn’t funny, but then I am replying to Svigor. Lenny Bruce was not only funny but groundbreaking to the degree that he transformed the entire art form. I’d suggest to anyone interested to read, How To Talk Dirty And Influence People by Lenny Bruce, it well worth the time and has bits of his material worked into it.

They were in extasy due to the the pure “Schadenfreude”, pure sadistic pleasure generated through the crude below-the-belt, anti-humor, belted out by this cretinous, talentless, so-called “Comedian”

You evidently have no clue as to the nature of bonafide humor, and as far as “talking dirty” with a humorous twist : Lenny Bruce did not invent this phenomena, as a stint in the army would have informed you.

Authenticjazzman “Mensa” qualified since 1973, airborne trained US Army vet, and pro Jazz artist.

It wasn’t that Lenny Bruce talked dirty that made him so groundbreaking, talking dirty was why he was hounded by authorities and part of the title of his autobiography. He changed comedy because there was meaning and elements of truth to his humour beyond just getting laughs. Interestingly, jazz and comedy often went together in his day.

Your IQ appears to diminish with every comment that you make. Given that it wasn’t that great to begin with I expect you’ll be in negative numbers very soon. Are you sure that the “Mensa” that you keep referring to isn’t actually a Mensa-like club for those who just wished that they had a high IQ?

  57. ” Interestingly, jazz and comedy often went together in his day”

First of all I have been active as a jazz performer since the “Lenny Bruce” days, and I have never been on a gig with combined jazz and comedy, and my last gig was this afternoon, at a music-brunch.

Secondly I consider Lenny Bruce to have been a crude, low-life cretin, a guy who’s only talent resided in his ability to cause shock-waves, rather than exuding sophisicated, subtle humor, however if you prefer such garbage and if it appeals to your intellectual niveau, than so be it.

Regarding my “Mensa” qualification : Why don’t you contact them and advise that they are awarding qualification to undeserving individuals such as myself, and perhaps they will demand that I return my gold-embossed certificate which I have held since 1973.

Now, now, Nosey. Noblesse oblige and all that.

I’m thinking of returning to halcyon days of yore, DarpaNet circa ’82, and signing off as “manorchurch, Mensa qualified since 1964, proudly POG, jazz sucks”.

Yup, no double-quotes around “Mensa” in that usage, per 9th-grade, Miss DeMello.

Why would I want to be stuck in police state with a ruling class that hates me?
Nullification and secession are the way forward.

Exactly. The best part of this is Pat closing up with the separation angle.

Perhaps, rather than seeking to create a synthetic unity, those who so deeply and viscerally disagree — on politics, morality, culture and even good and evil — ought peacefully to go their separate ways.
We both live in the USA, but we inhabit different countries.

The simplest way to tell “who’s right” in politics is “will they let me go?”

Real “oppression” is stealing someone’s labor and not letting them go do their own thing. Slavery. Serfdom. That principle is why it was obvious who the bad guys were in the Cold War. The commies not only wouldn’t let their opponents opt out and do their own thing, they wouldn’t even let them leave!

This is what’s going on now. We haven’t gotten to the “you can’t leave” stage–individually–yet. But we are already there for white people–white gentiles, especially white guys–as any sort of organized group. What we have essentially is an extension and universalization of the Jewish principle that everywhere and everything must be open and penetrable by Jews.

Whites can not have their own businessess, schools, country clubs ;-), neighborhoods or nations.

If three straight white guys–heck a Jewish guy a white guy and an Asian guy–start a business and it’s successful … then it’s “racist”, “sexist”, “homophobic”, “Islamophobic”, etc. etc. etc. … if it isn’t “diverse”–jammed full of appropriate numbers of women, minorities, queers, etc. You didn’t build that.

If there’s a traditional white middle or working class community out there somewhere–anywhere–where whites are just minding their own business, living like whites with white culture, white schools, white traditions … then that community needs a good dose of Section 8 and AFFH injected diversity. Unless of course it’s say …. Chappaqua N.Y. with the “right sort” of white people. That’s different.

And, of course, most fundamentally, if there’s a white nation out there it must have diversity shoved up it’s ass good and hard. If it resists and just wants to keep itself, its people, culture, traditions intact and mind its own business–like Hungary or Poland–that is “racist”, “Islamophobic” … and evil of evil “nationalist”, which is just like “Nazi” and we can hear the marching of boots and the hiss of zyklon-B … for simply desiring to not destroy the nation, the people on a homeland, that you’ve had for a couple thousand years.

The overarching leftist principle can not be opposing “oppression” of POC or women or LBGQUERTY, because if that’s the case, then the oppression can immediately be stopped by those folks doing there own and letting normal white people–who are more than happy to do so–go do their thing. But in fact, white people off doing their own thing is called “racist!” and the demand is that whereever white people–especially white guys–are, “diversity” must be jammed in.

Nope the overarching leftist principle is the exploitation of whites–esp. white gentile males. The demand that they are not allowed to build anything–businesses, institutions, neighborhoods, nations–for themselves, but that anything they create must be open to all and in fact, taken to be distributed to all.

And the simple way to outline this reality is to mention *separation*.

I honestly don’t care if these loons want to have their rainbow hued open borders diversitopia (police state). That’s how the Hillary voter wants to live–great, have at it.

But they have no right to steal from me, to destroy the (Western) nation my ancestors built with their blood and sweat, to drag me, my descendants, my nation, down with them. I.e. they have no right to steal and destroy *my* stuff.

So let’s just separate and live according to our very different ways. Of course, you mention that and the screaming outlines the reality of what their actual motives are.
