“With the stroke of a pen, Rod Rosenstein redeemed his reputation,” writes Dana Milbank of The Washington Post.

What had Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein done to be welcomed home by the Post like the prodigal son?

Without consulting the White House, he sandbagged President Trump, naming a special counsel to take over the investigation of the Russia connection that could prove ruinous to this presidency.

Rod has reinvigorated a tired 10-month investigation that failed to find any collusion between Trump and Russian hacking of the DNC. Not a single indictment had come out of the FBI investigation.

Yet, now a new special counsel, Robert Mueller, former director of the FBI, will slow-walk his way through this same terrain again, searching for clues leading to potentially impeachable offenses. What seemed to be winding down for Trump is now only just beginning to gear up.

Also to be investigated is whether the president tried to curtail the FBI investigation with his phone calls and Oval Office meetings with FBI Director James Comey, before abruptly firing Comey last week.

Regarded as able and honest, Mueller will be under media pressure to come up with charges. Great and famous prosecutors are measured by whom they convict and how many scalps they take.

Moreover, a burgeoning special counsel’s office dredging up dirt on Trump and associates will find itself the beneficiary of an indulgent press.

Why did Rosenstein capitulate to a Democrat-media clamor for a special counsel that could prove disastrous for the president who elevated and honored him?

Surely in part, as Milbank writes, to salvage his damaged reputation.

After being approved 94-6 by a Senate that hailed him as a principled and independent U.S. attorney for both George Bush and Barack Obama, Rosenstein found himself being pilloried for preparing the document White House aides called crucial to Trump’s decision to fire Comey.

Rosenstein had gone over to the dark side. He had, it was said, on Trump’s orders, put the hit on Comey. Now, by siccing a special counsel on the president himself, Rosenstein is restored to the good graces of this city. Rosenstein just turned in his black hat for a white hat.

Democrats are hailing both his decision to name a special counsel and the man he chose. Yet it is difficult to exaggerate the damage he has done.

As did almost all of its predecessors, including those which led to the resignation of President Nixon and impeachment of Bill Clinton, Mueller’s investigation seems certain to drag on for years.

All that time, there will be a cloud over Trump’s presidency that will drain his political authority. Trump’s enemies will become less fearful and more vocal. Republican Congressmen and Senators in swing states and marginal districts, looking to 2018, will have less incentive to follow Trump’s lead, rather than their own instincts and interests. Party unity will fade away.

ORDER IT NOW

And without a united and energized Republican Party on the Hill, how do you get repeal and replacement of Obamacare, tax reform or a border wall? Trump’s agenda suddenly seems comatose. And was it a coincidence that the day Mueller was appointed, the markets tanked, with the Dow falling 372 points?

Markets had soared with Trump’s election on the expectation that his pro-business agenda would be enacted. If those expectations suddenly seem illusory, will the boom born of hope become a bust?

A White House staff, said to be in disarray, and a president reportedly enraged over endless press reports of his problems and falling polls, are not going to become one big happy family again with a growing office of prosecutors and FBI agents poking into issues in which they were involved.

Nor is the jurisdiction of the special counsel restricted to alleged Russia interference in the campaign. Allegations about Trump’s taxes, investments, and associates, and those of his family, could be drawn into the maw of the special counsel’s office by political and business enemies enthusiastic about seeing him brought down.

More folks in Trump’s entourage will soon be lawyering up.

While it’s absurd today to talk of impeachment, that will not deter Democrats and the media from speculating, given what happened to Nixon and Clinton when special prosecutors were put on their trail.

Another consequence of the naming of a special counsel, given what such investigations have produced, will be that Vice President Pence will soon find himself with new friends and admirers, and will begin to attract more press as the man of the future in the GOP.

A rising profile for Pence is unlikely to strengthen his relationship with a besieged president.

In the United Kingdom, the odds are growing that Trump may not finish his term.

So how does he regain the enthusiasm and energy he exhibited in previous crises, with such talk in the air?

A debilitating and potentially dangerous time for President Trump has now begun, courtesy of his deputy attorney general.

Patrick J. Buchanan is the author of a new book, “Nixon’s White House Wars: The Battles That Made and Broke a President and Divided America Forever.”

  1. Without consulting the White House, he sandbagged President Trump, naming a special counsel to take over the investigation of the Russia connection that could prove ruinous to this presidency.

    How can that be?

There is no fire. There isn’t even any smoke.

It’s just the GLOB yelling FIRE in a crowded theater.

Let these fools chase the Wild Russian Sheep.

Actually, this is good for Trump. He can focus on REAL issues and REAL goals while Media and Deep State idiots waste their time and energy on Russia, Russia, and Russia.

Now, if there is EVIDENCE that Trump illegally colluded with Russia in the US election, then he should be impeached.
But I think there is nothing. I mean so far they found nothing.
    So, let them keep looking.

In a way, this can be a blessing for Trump. The more the media and Deep State(or Sewer) expend their energies on Russia, they will have less time to focus on other matters.

In the long run, they will make themselves look totally foolish and retarded.

Also, it undermines one of the most Sacred Narratives of the American Left: Its martyrdom at the hands of Joe McCarthy, HUAC, and Red Scare hysteria.
Also, the Left that had long condemned the extra-legal power of FBI of J. Edgar Hoover and CIA(under Acheson, Helms, and Casey) is now rooting for the Secret State, the Dark Power.

This is really a blessing for the American Right IF it plays it right.

It means Joe McCarthy, HUAC, and Hoover were utterly justified in all their dirty tricks to maintain security or nation.

    Or

It means the so-called ‘left’ and progs have become the very monster they once denounced so vociferously.

Of course, it’s all about Jewish Power. It’s incredible but the Entire World now revolves around the Axis of Jewish Neurosis… just like it once revolved around the Axis of an Austro-German corporal’s psychopathy during WWI.

Jewish Neurosis is the #1 Tyrant of the World.

    It needs to be psycho-analyzed.

  2. With Watergate, there was a real burglary.

With Iran-Contra, there was real attempt to trade hostages for arms, which was tied to supplying Contras.

With Clinton, there really was a dress with his sperm.

So, all three revolved around real things.

There is NOTHING here. Those pursuing this will just make fools of themselves.

Trump should make this clear and be forthright about it.

Then he should remain aloof and above the fray while everyone in media and deep state make total fools of themselves in this wild sheep chase for Keyser Soze or Arch Stanton, the false leads.

If Trump plays it right, it will be a great blessing.

  3. With the appointment of “special counsel Robert Mueller” the witch-hunt against President Donald J. Trump has reached a new zenith. In the end, it could lead to an impeachment of a President who has done nothing wrong. The reprobated Democratic party and parts of the GOP together with a corrupt media conglomerate have joint forces against a President who held up a mirror to them. The so-called investigation will drag on for years, although the “great” FBI hasn’t found anything yet. What is even more important is the existence of a “Deep Sate” in the US over which a President has no power. By implication it means, it doesn’t matter who runs the US under the guidance of this criminal conglomerate. The US are no longer “The Shining City on the Hill” but the “Hell’ Kitchen.” The American democratic rhetoric can fool no one any longer.

Time and again, I have read learned and intellectual commenters, here and elsewhere, call out the "deep state" as corrupt and omnipotent. If there is one country in the world in which the people should have the power to confront this hidden regeigm, it is the U.S. and yet, nothing happens. There is no confrontation...only "talk." Why wouldn't the first of the day be to confront and expose, to rally financial backing and restore the true democracy that all want? I'm listening.

Okay to agree is easy. What can be done to rid the US country of this deep state corruption and we isn't that ever discussed?

    9/11

Mueller was head of the FBI from September 4, 2001 to September 4, 2013

it was the FBI that collected any and all video from every gas station and convenience store immediately following the attacks that might have recorded whatever it was that struck the Pentagon. His term seems almost as if it was intended to coincide with the necessity of the cover up (that obviously happened - what's on all those videos?).

it was also the FBI that interviewed and detained the 'dancing Israelis'

if the truth about 9/11 was ever to get out, then not only would people at the highest levels of the government and intelligence agencies be in jeopardy, but the msm as well, and perhaps most egregious from their point of view, 'the special relationship'

Trump is seen as a loose cannon, and they're not certain that he's willing to keep a lid on all their serial treasons and myriad war crimes and crimes against humanity. Not enough of an arsenal.

Team Trump must now pull the trigger on Pizzagate while preempting further sabotage and spying by the Obama-compromised NSA and FBI. In effect, Team Trump finds itself forced to behave like fugitives in their own country. Unconventional means and alliances will be needed.

All is not lost - Trump won the primary and election in large part because his team was well aware of Obama/NSA treasonous spying and sabotage, and built up alternative capabilities accordingly.

Trump needs to keep or re-engage a superior group of key fighters not beholden to the GLOB, including Steve Bannon and Kellyann Conway. This is not a time to look for social airs and graces.

At the same time, Trump needs to expand its existing network of supporters and spies within the second and third tiers of government bureaucracies. Massive waves of firings and re-shuffles throughout the bureaucracy may help keep the opposition off-balance.

Any action plan needs to start with a clear understanding of the extensive abilities of the NSA and other agencies (including states) to track not only communications but individuals, vehicles, payments, etc.

I find it hilarious that Leftists (and the Deep State Barge of Inertia) think that thwarting his Administration will allow them to re-steer the USA (and West in general) back into its continuous left turn.

Heaping scorn on those whom the Left has demonized, and Leftist policies of minority favoritism in law and open borders, replacement-level immigration from places whose cultures are inimical to the USA’s, are simply adding to the momentum when the pendulum inevitably swings the other way.

Get it through your thick skull. American whites, with their immigrant past, generally look at their society not from a "Western Civilization" perspective, but from an American perspective. Moreover, while it is possiblethat they will rise up against the globalists and the leftists and put their heads on pikes if and when this Epic Financial Fall takes place, it is also possible that these same people, a number of them called "cucks" and "Churchians" by the Alt Right, will band together to make the required reforms under the rule of law without slitting throats. Trump is the first, small signal that the Progressivist Juggernaut has passed its apogee. During the final run higher (the 1960's to now) DC became a cesspool of looting, hedonism, back-stabbing and such to make HBO's Game of Thrones look like the Disney Channel.

The last couple years of that run witnessed some of the craziest claims EVER. Men can be women by cutting off their genitals and taking the very hormones known to cause all manner of health problems in WOMEN? You've got to BeF---KiddingMe.

Human social behavior occurs in waves that form a fractal pattern. We're ending the largest social mood mania in recorded history, and it will be followed by a "consolidation" of commensurate proportion. I expect to see Progessivist/Leftist Theocratic dogma largely washed away during the century or more that such a correction should run.

then you list the real vs the fake events that resulted in hair-on-fire reactions:

    -->the burglary was real
--> the blue dress was real

--< Russian attempt to destroy US democracy NOT real

Cycle back; who's a "neurotic psychopath" and who was dealing in the real world during WWI, zionist Jews or Hitler & NSDAP?

    Look at the evidence:

Zionists started belly aching about "6 million Jews" "since 1869," (h/t Wally http://www.unz.com/ishamir/vladimir-ilyich-trump/#comment-1875904 )

    Trump is a centrist.

I find it hilarious that Leftists (and the Deep State Barge of Inertia) think that thwarting his Administration will allow them to re-steer the USA (and West in general) back into its continuous left turn.

Just wait until this Long Boom ends. Heaping scorn on those whom the Left has demonized, and Leftist policies of minority favoritism in law and open borders, replacement-level immigration from places whose cultures are inimical to the USA's, are simply adding to the momentum when the pendulum inevitably swings the other way.

When the perception of unlimited resources flips over, political RAGE at welfare, at showering resources on "refugees" whose cultures are not just alien but stand in diametric opposition to Western Civ, promises to be epic.

Leftists are sowing the seeds of their future demise. Trump is just the first signal, and a moderate at that. We've had our Wiemar Republic (built on the biggest credit bubble inflation in recorded history these past 35 years.)

Wait until you see what follows Trump.

“When the perception of unlimited resources flips over, political RAGE at welfare, at showering resources on “refugees” whose cultures are not just alien but stand in diametric opposition to Western Civ, promises to be epic.”

Get it through your thick skull. American whites, with their immigrant past, generally look at their society not from a “Western Civilization” perspective, but from an American perspective. Moreover, while it is possiblethat they will rise up against the globalists and the leftists and put their heads on pikes if and when this Epic Financial Fall takes place, it is also possible that these same people, a number of them called “cucks” and “Churchians” by the Alt Right, will band together to make the required reforms under the rule of law without slitting throats. You seem hellbent on thinking that today’s white men, generally reviled for being soft, will boil over like an erupting volcano, harden like lava, and run roughshod over Jews, banksters, corportists, and their ethnic “pets”. Maybe, maybe not.

By not betraying the people who supported his candidacy.

    By building the wall.

By staying out of wars in the Middle East.

By honoring his promise to put America and Americans first.

Now he is in the middle of a civil war and his own party doesn’t have his back. The Jews he so loves are leading the civil war.

While this civil war is raging, Trump is off to the Middle East playing diplomat. Tip to Trump: the ME is a quagmire and will be a quagmire when you leave as it will be for the next president. If you want to finish your term in office and, especially, if you want to accomplish what you pledged, you are better off staying in the US and leading the fight for your side in the civil war because right now it is a one-sided fight and you and the Deplorables are losing.

All is not lost – Trump won the primary and election in large part because his team was well aware of Obama/NSA treasonous spying and sabotage, and built up alternative capabilities accordingly.

With the appointment of "special counsel Robert Mueller" the witch-hunt against President Donald J. Trump has reached a new zenith. In the end, it could lead to an impeachment of a President who has done nothing wrong. The reprobated Democratic party and parts of the GOP together with a corrupt media conglomerate have joint forces against a President who held up a mirror to them. The so-called investigation will drag on for years, although the "great" FBI hasn't found anything yet. What is even more important is the existence of a "Deep Sate" in the US over which a President has no power. By implication it means, it doesn't matter who runs the US under the guidance of this criminal conglomerate. The US are no longer "The Shining City on the Hill" but the "Hell' Kitchen." The American democratic rhetoric can fool no one any longer.

Time and again, I have read learned and intellectual commenters, here and elsewhere, call out the “deep state” as corrupt and omnipotent. If there is one country in the world in which the people should have the power to confront this hidden regeigm, it is the U.S. and yet, nothing happens. There is no confrontation…only “talk.” Why wouldn’t the first of the day be to confront and expose, to rally financial backing and restore the true democracy that all want? I’m listening.

What any Republican should be looking at is that Trump and Trump Voters ruled the Republican Party in the recent primaries. And that goes a lot deeper than voters deciding they liked someone who tweets.

The Bush camp got clobbered. A giant war chest and only single-digit voter support in early primaries let to a quick withdraw. Linsay-Graham tried to run a platform of soon having a nuclear war with Russia, and likewise got clobbered. Cruz and Rubio tried to really a last stand of the Bush/Cheney crowd and the neocons, and couldn’t even slow down the Trump steamroller.

Those voters are still there. And any Republican who thinks that if they just get Trump out of the picture and everything goes back to normal within the Republican party is just dreaming.

Trump supporters can do two things right now. One is to contact their current Republican senators and reps and tell them that they expect them to stand with their Republican President. And, the other thing they need to be doing right now is organizing strong, populist Trump voters candidates in the primaries that will be coming up in the first half of next year.

If the next election gets framed as the Trump voters against the Republicans who back-stabbed Trump, then the Trump voters will be back and stronger than either. And they’ll draw in others like me who come from more of a peacenik, anti-war background now that the Democrats have gone full-bore insane on a “We want nuclear war and we want it NOW!” platform.

What they play out now in DC gets settled in the 2018 elections. Primaries and general election. If people really want change, they’ll have to get out, get organized and get strong and fight for it again in 2018. In fact, the history of the bankers and the merchants of death is that they’ll always keep coming back and fighting against democracy, so get ready for a fight for the long haul because Evil ain’t gonna quit.
