“Though New York City has one of the most segregated schools systems in the country,” writes Elizabeth Harris of The New York Times, until now, Mayor Bill de Blasio “was all but silent on the issue.”

He was “reluctant even to use the word ‘segregation.’”

Now the notion that the liberal mayor belongs in the same basket as Southern governors in the ’50s and ’60s like Orval Faubus of Arkansas and Ross Barnett of Mississippi seems a bit of a stretch.

For what Harris means by “segregation” is that in the city’s eight most prestigious schools, like Stuyvesant High School and the Bronx School of Science, where admission is by written test, the makeup of the student body does not remotely resemble the racial diversity of the city.

“Black and Hispanic students make up nearly 70 percent of the city’s public school students,” writes Harris, “but they received just 10 percent of offers for seats at specialized schools this fall.”

“About 27 percent of the offers went to white students who make up 15 percent of the student system; 52 percent went to Asian students, who up make 16 percent.”

Harris later adjusted her numbers. Asians are 62 percent of students. At Stuyvesant, only 10 of 900 students being admitted this fall are black.

At Stuyvesant, The Wall Street Journal writes, “2.8 percent of students are Latino and 0.69 percent are black. But 72.9 percent are Asian-American.”

Harris decries this as “extreme school segregation.”

De Blasio now demands change: “We must be sure that the very best high schools are open to … every kind of New Yorker.” The student bodies at the elite public schools “need to look like New York City.”

Translation: We must have more Hispanic and black students, and if that means throwing out the entrance exam to cut the numbers of Asians and whites, throw out the exam.

Soo Kim, president of the Stuyvesant alumni association, is having none of it: “Correct me if I’m wrong, but they’re saying these schools are too Asian, so there must be something wrong. … Am I the only one who looks at that and says, ‘I don’t understand how that’s even legal.’”

Councilman Peter Koo took it straight to the mayor:

“The test is the most unbiased way to get into a school. … It doesn’t require a resume. It doesn’t even require connections. The mayor’s son just graduated from Brooklyn Tech and got into Yale. Now he wants to stop this and build a barrier to Asian-Americans — especially our children.”

“I’m not sure if the mayor is a racist,” says Kenneth Chiu, chairman of the New York City Asian-American Democratic Club, “but this policy is certainly discriminatory.”

As Asians demonstrated this week against changing admissions standards to reduce the number of Asian students, schools chancellor Richard Carranza gave them the back of his hand: “I just don’t buy into the narrative that any one ethnic group owns admissions to these schools.”

Yet it is Carranza and De Blasio who are claiming an entitlement to seats at the schools based on race. The Asian protesters are insisting on maintaining merit and performance, measured by tests, as the standard of admission.

This issue is not confined to New York. It has gone national and pits Asian-Americans who believe in and benefit from a meritocracy in education against egalitarians who embrace race quotas and affirmative action to bring about a greater equality of rewards.

That Asians are the new victims of race discrimination seems undeniable. In August, the Times reported:

“A Princeton study found that students who identify as Asian need to score 140 points higher on the SAT than whites to have the same chance of admission to private colleges, a difference some have called ‘the Asian tax.’

“A lawsuit cites Harvard’s Asian-American enrollment at 18 percent in 2013, and notes very similar numbers ranging from 14 to 18 percent at other Ivy League colleges, like Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Princeton and Yale.”

Now, compare the numbers from California:

“In the same year (2013), Asian-Americans made up 34.8 percent of the student body at the University of California, Los Angeles, 32.4 percent at Berkeley and 42.5 percent at Caltech.”

Among possible reasons for the racial disparities: In 1996, by voter referendum, Californians outlawed racial preferences.

What the Ivy League is doing may be criminal in the Golden State.

In 1965, in words written by Richard Goodwin who died last month, and delivered at Howard University, LBJ declared:

“This is the next and the more profound stage of the battle for civil rights. We seek not just … equality as a right and a theory but equality as a fact and equality as a result.”

In today’s clash in liberalism’s citadel over which races have too many seats at Brooklyn Tech and Stuyvesant, and which races have too few, we get a glimpse of America’s future.

It appears to be a future of endless collisions and conflicts over who deserves and who gets what — based upon ethnicity and race.

Patrick J. Buchanan is the author of a new book, “Nixon’s White House Wars: The Battles That Made and Broke a President and Divided America Forever.”

There’s a very fundamental logical error concealed here. I may be a snoot, and you may be a gret, but we’re not part of some hive collective; above all, we’re individuals.

To be an ‘egalitarian’ — to teach us equally — doesn’t mean to hand out rewards to me and you in such a fashion as to ensure snoots get exactly the same amount of goodies per capita as grets; it means to treat us equally as individuals.

In other words, if I finish first, I get the medal. If you finish first, you do. It’s not about whether more grets are winning or more snoots are winning. We’re individuals; and it’s about who won. You or me?

    America’s future, indeed.

Focused on subdividing the ever-dwindling spoils, instead of growing the spoils, for the benefit of all, in the first place. Focused on differences instead of what we have in common.

I did not think these trends could accelerate any further, but they seem to be.

    Interesting times ahead.

This case displays Asian/oriental hypocrisy on racial matters. When white living spaces and schools are being attacked in this manner and forcibly diversified the Asians remain silent or stand with the blacks and Latinos, but now that it’s happening to them they’re singing a different tune and sound just like all those “racist” whites from yesteryear.

Hey, why not just use those exams or the PSAT? Or hire those organizations to create a simpler SAT just for middle school kids. The whole scheme rewards (corruption?) spending money on test prep and perhaps cheating on the 95 multiple choice questions. Why not just use an IQ test?

I don’t see that passing the SHSSAT should get you such superior facilities. More advanced courses ok, but swimming pools and other stuff seems dubious and I don’t blame people for complaining that their kids don’t have access to that stuff.

If only Asians, in opposing AA and quotas for blacks and “Hispanics,” i.e, Mestizos and pure Amerindians, and anti-”Asian” discrimination, would tell the truth about innate racial group differences, assertively and unapologetically; e.g., that huge racial disparities between “Asian” and blacks on average are largely and essentially biological in causation; that an equality of results can never be attained since “Asians” have an average IQ of 105 and “blacks” that of 85. And the only reason the average IQ of “blacks” is 86 is because millions of “blacks” are Mulattoes, Quadroons, and even Octoroons.

Should this happen, it would be fascinating to see how the ruling-elites and governing-classes, gentile and Jewish, would react to such candor and realism, and how “Asians” would respond. Would large numbers of Republicans and mainstream conservatives, including Ann Coulter and Pat Buchanan, join Asians and the dissident-alternative right in telling the truth about innate racial group differences. If so, the consequences would be salutary and profound and quasi-revolutionary.

In 2001 former prime minister of Japan Nakasone once commented to his own party that “So high is the level of education in our country that Japan’s is an intelligent society. Our average score is much higher than those of countries like the U.S. There are many blacks, Puerto Ricans and Mexicans in America. In consequence the average score over there is exceedingly low.”

For that he was roundly criticized by the US media and was made to apologize. Note that he wasn’t even in the US when he said that, he was in Japan, speaking in Japanese, to his own party members.

It is the quality of the students themselves that make the difference; the opportunity to study and learn with serious peers, without the slackers, bullies and other nose-pickers that make learning unnecessarily difficult for everyone.

Strangely, I see a lot of White guys with dumpy Mexican/Indian/Asian broads and their mixed-hue kids at Costco these days. JEB Bush set the trend on that. Wimps don’t get wives from the White race anymore, I guess.

Nonetheless, the BedSty issue is a tiny cross section, interesting, but not earth-shattering unless it winds up in court. Funny would be busing Asians and Whites across town to the Bronx and Bronx kids into Manhattan because: balance. I do like when the Left consumes its own subjects.

Well. actually, that 140 points reflects affirmative action for one particular White ethnic group. Christian Whites are underrepresented in the Ivy League based on their test scores even worse than Orientals. If I’m not mistaken, Ron Unz published an essay on this fact.

  49. KenH says:

The (((media))) must be in a quandary with how to deal with diversity recalcitrant Asians. If it were whites resisting efforts at school integration the media could just flash some footage of Bull Connor’s men using nightsticks and water hoses on smartly dressed blacks, burning crosses, men in white sheets, blacks in the back of the bus and George Wallace giving an impassioned speech. They might even throw in footage of neo-Nazis marching down a street shouting “Sieg Heil!”

Add in some long faces and head shaking from the commentariat and that’s usually all it takes to shame whites into getting back on their hands and knees and force establishment conservatives to go into hiding, upbraid their own supporters or virtue signal.

For the most part Asians (orientals) didn’t arrive until after 1965 and never owned negro slaves. As a fast growing minority (thanks to mass immigration) they are also becoming an important constituency of the anti-white Democrats and cog in the (((left’s))) total war against white people. So the media’s walking on egg shells and must be very measured in how they shame Asians.

Asians have a great advantage in that they’re not prone to sentimentality towards non Asians like whites are towards non-whites and aren’t saddled with 40% of their own people being self hating progs and SJW nutjobs.

Asians want to be invisible and silent, since they know they are alien to the West. I think it’s drilled into them. When you’re an obvious outsider, don’t speak

I think that’s an old cliche. It’s less true today than it used to be.

They have succeeded in being invisible and silent beyond all their expectations.

They’re really not that successful if we consider the effort they put in. They seem to exert twice the energy to eke out relatively marginal gains.

Take another minority who has probably never put in more than 2 hours of study in her entire life. She graduates from high school and gets a comfy job at the DMV.

And that’s why no political party caters to them.

I think their votes are not seen to matter because they make no marginal difference in places like CA and NY.

Exactly. Robert Weissberg discussed this in his book Bad Students, Not Bad Schools.

“Schools” can’t be good or bad, they are just buildings full of tables and chairs. They are only good or bad because of the people in them. Sure teachers make a difference, but they are small in number compared to the students. It is the students who overwhelmingly determine the quality of a school.

But leave it to the liberals, they would never accept that people are unequal in aptitude or work ethic, they want to believe it is the schools – the buildings, the curriculum and the teachers who make schools great. I say let them have at it. Kick out all the Asian and white kids at Stuy, Brooklyn Tech etc. and replace them with 100% black kids, then sit back and watch how these “good schools” polish them into diamonds.

In fact, we should do the same with the entire Ivy League. Make them all 100% black to maximize opportunity for these eternal victims. Do it!

The report concluded that it would be reasonable to mandate public-sector agencies go through an “impact assessment” process for any algorithms they plan to use.

New York has taken steps toward that goal. Acknowledging how algorithms are increasingly incorporated into software that makes decisions about school placements, criminal justice or the distribution of social services, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio recently announced plans to set up a task force review the city’s automated decision systems for equity, fairness and accountability.

The AI Now Institute at New York University recently released a report on assessing the impact of algorithms that recommends a pre-acquisition review and a chance for public comment.

That’s half-forgotten now by the children of those people, and, of course, the millions of Chinese from the mainland aren’t on the same page with the anti-Communism (they may not like their own government, but it’s not on principle – most don’t have these kind of principles.)

But beyond that, I do think that most politically active Asians will lean left for three reasons:

    1) Democratic outreach. When I went to Chinese community centers, I saw democrats sending black women to attempt to work and reach out to community members there to get them to vote for Hillary at the time. Conservatives don’t really have much of an organization from what I see, and don’t practice anything like that.

    2) College attendance. Its pretty obvious that liberals have taken over higher education, but East Asians still obsess over higher education. The brainwashing continues.

Another problem is the current location of Stuyvesant at the edge of the city instead of the center. Commuting to school for a long period of time disadvantages kids not living in Manhattan or Brooklyn Heights. The large Asian contingent is to be expected given the school is near chinatown. This problem could be somewhat addressed by allowing New Jersey ‘minority’ students living near a PATH stop to enroll. Path trains start in Newark NJ and end near Stuyvesant.

Asians (East and South-east) badly, often very badly, fail to comprehend American culture.

In Asia, self-promotion simply isn’t done.

Self-promotion and outward displays of confidence elicit suspicion that some scam is being pulled – as in it’s a DISTRACTION from the deception or manipulation being implemented.. In my (limited) experience, the way to get ahead in Asia is to play it cool and “let your performance speak for you”.

If you do blow your own horn in Asia, you had better live up to your own hype, and not fall even an iota short. They have zero patience for bullshit.

Actions speak loudly, outward confidence is meaningless diversion – in Asia.

In America, the culture sees self-confidence as indication of real substantive capability. American thinking is that if someone is good at what he does, he would NATURALLY let people know, in “subtle” or not-so-subtle terms. Words confidence, bearing, delivery, demeanor and appearance count AT LEAST as much as substance.

Gotta have at least some modicum of substance, AND THEN you better have the skill to play up your value to the maximum extent. In fact, Americans love a bit (or a lot) of exaggeration of self-worth.

Simple, serene competence, in America, indicates LACK of actual capability. “Why’s he not overtly confident? Why’s he so SUBDUED? Guy’s not gonna inspire anybody, ZERO LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL” – that’s standard American thinking.

So people who attempt to quietly perform and yet fail to sell themselves (typical Asian behavior) in America get, mostly, ignored. Or at best promoted all the way to middle management and never beyond.

The people who constantly stoke conflict and division are destroying the country and playing with fire. They are creating a society of tribes that compete for these ever-dwindling resources in a dirty zero-sum game that is fought out in the court room, in the lobbyist’s office and in the court of public opinion. Who wants to live in a place where people are constantly at each other’s throats, where there is never peace because everyone thinks the other tribes are gaining unfair advantages at their own tribe’s expense?

The rifts in American society are already deep and there is no shortage of extremely angry people with massive chips on their shoulders. If present trends continue the lucky few with inherited wealth and political connections can pretend they earned their privileged positions but even they are afraid somebody is going to harm or kill them and steal their precious stuff so they segregate themselves from the rest of society and live in a parallel universe, forgetting that the vast majority of people do not live like they do. These rifts and mutual animosities that are constantly being reinforced won’t just evaporate one day – none of the tribes will surrender and agree to be the other’s bitch (or slave).

A society with no shared values that eschews compromise and a sense of collective responsibility is not sustainable. It is a failed state waiting to happen and that is where we are heading. Maybe it’s Gaddafi’s revenge from the afterlife because it sure looks like future America is going to resemble an Americanized version of post-2012 Libya.

Well, whatever the cause, this is what death throes look like. Pretty much before the end of an organization or group, the final steps of despair is facing something akin to collective failure, each segment finds a reason to blame the other and vigorously attacks the other.

In some ways this can be quite senseless – in Robert Falcon Scott’s doomed expedition, as it was obvious that they were all going to die of hunger and cold, the men proceeded to lash out at each other for trivialities such as taking spoons from each other or bumping into each other.

I don’t really think that an appeal to reason is going to work given the circumstances. I mostly watch and comment.

“Yellow”, now that’s not so nice, especially for the Oriental girls. They want you to call them white – in pigmentation that is.

Well, I’d defer to the greater expertise of the Chinese commenters on this thread, but my strong impression is that this is completely mistaken.

I think the “Yellow Emperor” is considered the semi-legendary founder of the Chinese people, who are therefore sometimes described as “the Children of the Yellow Emperor.” I think I’ve also read that perhaps as a consequence, the color “yellow” is associated with imperial splendor in Chinese culture, much like color “purple” was with the Roman Emperors.

I’d suspect that this history has at least as much to do with traditional American description of East Asians as “yellow people” as their skin color being somewhat darker than Anglo-Saxons.

Also, from what I’ve read the negative American connotations of “yellow” go back only to the Civil War, when it was used as a marker of cowardice in battle. If so, then only the most totally ignorant and assimilated Asian-Americans would place 150 years of arbitrary American tradition over 3000+ years of Chinese culture regarding the implications of that color.

I’d certainly welcome any corrections on this by commenters more knowledgeable than myself.

When Asian-Americans do get involved — and enough of them at least VOTE to do damage in swing states as their numbers rapidly increase — they overwhelmingly support the Left through the Democratic Party. They ARE rocking the boat, and white Americans and all decent Americans are trying not to go under.

Indeed, yellow was the Chinese royal / imperial color.

What happens if de Blasio caves? Then those “racist” white parents on the Upper West Side for PS#191 or whatever will want their school back too. Caranza’s master plan for forced desegregation will fail completely.

What if de Blasio ignores these Asian parents and goes ahead with the forced integration? Will they sue? Or just bend over as the whites did? The black/hispanic kids who get into Stuy will probably be pissed as hell over these protests and take it out on the Asian kids in school. Things could get ugly. One thing for sure the Asian kids from Stuy et al. will be even more disadvantaged when applying to elite colleges, all those spots will be reserved for the black/hispanic kids from these elite schools, in spite of their lower class rank.

I’m popping some popcorn to see how this all plays out. Should be interesting.

You didn’t catch the last part, apparently – “in pigmentation”. I just meant that the Chinese girls try to be as white as possible – LITERALLY, and I mean “literally” the way it’s supposed to be used.

Have you seen pictures of, or actual Chinese girls, up through modern times, with umbrellas for the sunshine? They are under the impression, whether erroneously or not, that once they get a tan, there’s no going back. They want to be as light-colored as possible and would be delighted if you complimented them on their lily-white skin.

I have no argument, though, with your history regarding the yellow appelation for the people of old Cathay.

I think you guys are seeing correlation in coincidence. “Yellow” is a racial metonym, not cultural.

Or maybe I’m totally wrong. I’d be very surprised.
