To go home, I had to take a taxi to Saigon’s airport, fly to Hanoi, then on to Hong Kong, where during a 5 ½ hour layover I’d take a train to Central to hang out a bit, then back to the airport to fly to JFK, then hop on two trains just to get to Manhattan, then two more to reach Philly’s 30th Street Station, from where I could, finally, take two subways to my South Philadelphia neighborhood. With so many legs to a trip, a thousand things could go wrong.

Tan Son Nhat Airport, Saigon
Tan Son Nhat Airport, Saigon

Riding through Saigon at 3:30AM, I noticed a bunch of restaurants were already open, with people sitting at sidewalk tables, eating noodles or drinking coffee. Tired, I said nothing to the driver. No jokes about a national homosexual policy, strictly enforced for half a century, to reverse the runaway population growth.

Before taking off from Saigon, the Vietnam Airlines stewardess warned us that to open any aircraft door during flight would result in a $880 fine.

A sign at Hanoi’s airport, “NO MOTORBIKES, BICYCLES OR PRIMITIVE MEANS.” During a month of hectic travel through urban and rural Vietnam, I saw just one ox-drawn cart and maybe a dozen pedicabs. SUV sales are surging, however, and there’s also a growing market for Harley Davidsons. They cost $16,000 to $52,000, twice as much as in the US. In Phan Thiet, I spotted a US Army jeep, meticulously restored, parked outside the ultra-trendy Ocean Coffee.

The express train from the airport to Central Hong Kong runs every 10 minutes from 5:54AM to 12:48AM, and takes but 24 minutes to cover 23 miles. Nearly every world-class city has a direct train to connect its international airport to downtown, but Los Angeles, New York and Washington DC simply don’t, and Americans just don’t give a flying, exploding cockpit! We’re number one!

Since the Washington Metro opened in 1976, politicians have talked about extending it to Dulles. Forty-one years later, it has crept within seven miles of the badly designed, unfriendly and decrepit airport, opened in 1962. It may even get there before the much welcome controlled demolition. In 2014, news.com.au asked of Dulles, “Is this the world’s worst airport?”

Year after year, East Asian top airports rank as the planet’s best, with Seoul’s, Singapore’s, Tokyo’s and Hong Kong’s nearly always in the top five. In Europe, London’s, Amsterdam’s, Frankfurt’s and Zurich’s are also first-rate.

With twice the population density of Saigon’s, Hong Kong’s streets are nowhere nearly as clogged, thanks to its excellent subway system and a vast fleet of private buses. Like Singapore, Hong Kong is also a hundred times cleaner and more orderly than my native city. Most impressively, Hong Kong’s murder rate per 100,000 people was only 0.4 for 2016. With 7.347 million people, it had 28 murders. By contrast, Philadelphia tallied 278 homicides for a population of 1.568 million.

Year after year, American blacks commit murders at roughly seven times the rate of whites, a fact that’s blamed by many on socioeconomic factors, historical resentment and/or ongoing racism, while others attribute it to a low IQ, innate lack of impulse control and/or propensity for violence. A century from now, will blacks still be an underclass in any multicultural societies still existing? How about in five hundred years?

Without a significant black population, East Asian societies don’t have to deal with this debate or problem. I’ve wandered unfamiliar Saigon, Hanoi and Singapore streets in the middle of the night without any fear of being shot or stabbed, and I’ve done the same in many European cities, including Istanbul and war-time Kiev.

In recent years, Africans have started to emigrate to Vietnam, and in Saigon’s Gò Vấp District and on Phạm Ngũ Lão Street, there are even black male prostitutes, a phenomenon that’s particularly pleasing to certain middle-aged Vietnamese women. The Africans’ prices are high for local standards, around $25 for a quickie, $50 for an overnight. A recent police raid brought in 50 Africans for questioning.

Wandering around Hong Kong’s Central, I spotted a graffiti, “DESTROY RACISM.” Nearby, there’s a pretty, young, blonde model on an ad for a high-end real estate firm, Man Hing Hong. A few steps away was another blonde, this one merely a teenager, on an ad for an ordinary hair salon, mina dev’ wil. Noticing racial differences means having racial preferences. We will never be color-blind.

As an adult, I’ve had two 2-year stints away from the US. Living in Saigon from 1999-2001, I missed Mexican food, Seahawks games on TV and some jazz, so I asked a friend, traveling to Saigon with the Philadelphia Orchestra, to bring me Django Reinhardt, and Lester Young accompanying Billie Holliday. Returning to the San Francisco Bay Area, I asked my brother to drive me straight to a Mexican joint. Now, there are good Mexican restaurants in Vietnam, and you can listen to anything on YouTube.

Living in Italy from 2002-2004, I missed decent fried chicken, tolerable Chinese food, bullshitting in bars and watching the Seahawks on TV. The Italian ways were so wonderful, the people so hospitable and sweet, I had several nightmares in which I suddenly found myself back in Philly. Opening my eyes, I discovered, with tremendous relief, that I was still in Italy.

Flying into Dulles, I noticed how wide the freeway medians were. So much space wasted, I thought. The currency exchange girl gave me several hundred dollars too much. Catching her mistake, I returned the cash. “Whoa!” She laughed.

During my month in Vietnam, I checked Seahawks games in progress, answered a few emails from Philly buddies and knew I would be back to eating canned chili, baked beans and clam chowder soon enough.

ORDER IT NOW

The flight from Hong Kong to JFK took 15 hours 45 minutes. Most of the passengers were Chinese-Americans, a fact I discovered when all these Cantonese speaking folks took out their blue passports at immigration. On the plane, the stewardess kept speaking Cantonese to me, even though I had answered her in English the last time around. Vietnam’s eternal fear is to be blended into China. Two seats away from me was a young man in a yarmulke. Since he had his earphones on during each waking moment, we never chattered.

Recently in Spain, I met a Norwegian who swore he would never return to the US, “The immigration at JFK was so long, and the agents so unfriendly! After such a long flight, we had to stand in line forever, and there were children and old people. We were all trapped!”

Without a direct train to Manhattan, I took the AirTrain to Howard Beach, then waited at least 20 minutes in the cold for the sluggish A Train. Descending the stairs, I passed a portly black man in a burgundy suit. Staring hard at me, he made a sibilant fart with his mouth. “How are you doing, man?” I answered.

“Get on the A Train,” Ella sang. “Soon, you’ll be on Sugar Hill in Harlem!” Yeah, right. All around me were exhausted passengers with their luggage. After flying for countless eons from Dar es Salaam, Ulaanbaatar or wherever, they stood, shivering.

Unique in the world, the entire New York subway system runs 24/7 all year long, so at night, its stations and trains shelter hundreds of homeless. Well bundled and surrounded by bags, they slump on seats. The average rent for a New York one-bedroom is $2,895. If you think that’s astronomical, it’s $3,500 for San Francisco, thanks to a massive influx of Chinese money. Keep those borders open! No human being is illegal!

Since 9/11, American airports, train stations, bus terminals, buses and subway cars have been plastered with signs advising a cowed populace to report on their fellow citizens. In Cambridge, MA, I saw a 10-foot-tall backpack with this tag, “IT’S NEVER THIS OBVIOUS. Suspicious, unattended items don’t always stand out like this.” A new sign in NYC shows a well-armed, battle ready cop next to an ordinary schmuck, “Officer Greg Elkin is well equipped to keep our region safe. And so is Jason.” Arrows point to Jason’s eyes, ears and cell phone. “Your eyes and ears are some of our most important safety tools. So if you see, hear, or notice something suspicious, speak up.”

It was past 1AM when I finally arrived at Penn Station. Inside were several homeless people who slept while standing up. Had they sat or lay down, they would have been kicked out. I shoved $20 into a ticket machine, but nothing happened, and there was no one at the information desk to complain to. Like a Diebold voting machine, it did what it wanted and could not be held accountable. I had no choice but to try again with plastic and, miracle of miracles, it granted me a passage home.

An electronic ad showed a middle-aged woman sitting on stage, “New 3D holographic technology preserves Holocaust survivor stories in Illinois museum.” Then appeared a South Asian man at a podium, “Google CEO Sundar Pichai makes fixing hamburger emoji to have cheese on top a ‘priority.’” Just about everything an American hears, sees or notices is bullshit or propaganda.

With time to kill, I wandered outside to find a three-story-tall electronic ad for Justice League, a movie featuring a team of American super heroes, “NO ONE CAN SAVE THE WORLD ALONE.” Across the street was a young woman sleeping inside a Bank of America ATM terminal. Seeing several food trucks selling Middle Eastern food, I bought a plate of rice with lamb for only $7. Thank God for Muslims, I thought as I took my food inside to chow down.

Passing a convenience store run by Indians, I noticed the New York Times had a new, unintentionally ironic slogan, “Truth. It’s more important now than ever.” Hellish Rihanna was on the cover of Elle. In Vietnam, I had shown her extremely sadistic “Bitch Better Have My Money” video to a friend. Aghast, he asked, “Why do Americans put up with this?!”

The train ride from Trenton to Philly was so bumpy, I could have sworn I was on an ox cart, but as the familiar skyline came into view in the pale, morning sunlight, I happily reflected that I was only hours away from my Friendly Lounge booze mates. I was home.

  3. LHR: A mile walk to practically anything; moving between terminals is a PITA, as it involves walking another mile to catch the “free” shuttle provided via the Heathrow Express.

LCY: Almost all waiting space is now restaurant or bar seating. You are lucky to get a seat, which you will want because flights are often delayed or cancelled.

Any London Airport: International connections often involve transit between airports, e.g. Heathrow to Gatwick: Have fun with that.

FRA: If you aren’t walking a mile to your gate, you’re probably on a bus to walked a half mile to catch. If you are lucky enough to deplane at a terminal, you face the real possibility of having to climb stairs with your bags. If it’s a bus, it will surely involve stairs.

AMS: Admittedly tolerable, but I haven’t flown in there much since Amsterdam is better served by Rail.

American airports are decrepit and dirty, but they are generally more passenger friendly.

FRA does have one surprising nice feature - you can take luggage carts on the escalators without having to switch vehicles all the time.

With a low center of gravity and special brakes, purpose-built carts are reasonably stable and safe even on an inclined escalator.

  5. I agree, Linh, that many us airports and train and bus stations are outdated or simply disgusting. Moreover, we have lost the balls, in most cities, to forcibly discipline and remove people who harass travelers by aggressive panhandling or otherwise, who piss and defecate in an around the stations, who expose themselves deliberately, throw food and trash everywhere, smoke weed or cigarettes in our faces, who play loud music (never seems to be country or classical music, hmmm), etc.

The homeless and the mentally ill and the obnoxious savage African — substantially overlapping categories — could rather easily be removed en masses and either institutionalized or, if they resist or have been violent or menacing, imprisoned or killed. All it takes is the guts and the willpower. President Trump, incidentally, would be re-elected in a New Jersey minute if he made this a federal priority.

And our airports highways, bridges, and infrastructure generally is neglected while we instead spend trillions of dollars on unnecessary, nondefensive / nonretaliatory, unconstitutional and often undeclared wars -all of it borrowed.

As for your lament about the food here in the USA, though, it makes no sense. Perhaps you need to get out into the USA more and it will be simple – in the cities or the suburbs – to avoid your supposed diet of baked beans, chowder, and the other nonsense you’re complaining about. If you claim not to have money for such things, then (1) work and earn more and/or (2) spend money dining at establishments acceptable to you instead of spending it on constant airfares.

As for your wonderful time in Italy, I am a proud ItalianAmerican and had always planned to visit Italy, as my parents did several times. But Italy, as you well know, is changing drastically and quickly. Would you really prefer this emerging African Muslim italy over the USA even with all our problems (including our own kinda-native and imported savage populations).

  6. Ah, the simple truth comes out…

My Filipino relatives have zero use for PC because they are prime targets for black thugs. Black thugs single them out because Filipinos are small and slight in build.

So, you won’t hear any evasions or PC talk about blacks at Filipino social gatherings. Whites who are not family members don’t seem to even notice or pay heed to the blunt talk about the omnipresence of black crime. Of course, whites don’t regard Asians as part of the racial “conversation.”

Oddly, it’s quite common for Filipinas to marry black men, primarily those with military experience, a legacy of the U.S. Navy base at Subic Bay. Successful military service seems to help black men to embrace education and leave behind gang thuggery.

Philadelphia is one of the most dangerous black gang dominated cities in the U.S. I spent a lot of time there on contract jobs. My hometown of Chicago is far worse, if you can imagine that.

Go ahead and dox me again. Not that it will do you any good.

At the Twopenny Hangover, the lodgers sit in a row on a bench; there is a rope in front of them, and they lean on this as though leaning over a fence. A man, humorously called the valet, cuts the rope at five in the morning.

I'm continuously amazed at how uniformly patriotic the legal and illegal immigrants I know are. I've learned to simply avoid talking politics with any of them. They are also consistently hard working, personable, and invariably quite good looking. All hold traditional values, are disgusted with a lot of the stuff "Americans put up with," and have also done quite well for themselves.

Some Filipina women are very hot, especially the few that have a little Spanish blood. In a 'just world' I would have a harem of sex slaves. One Filipina, one or two light skinned negresses but still unquestionably black, and about ten Dominicana's. LOL! My wives however would be white or as close as possible, LOL!!!

  10. there are even black male prostitutes, a phenomenon that’s particularly pleasing to certain middle-aged Vietnamese women.

Are these men from Africa? Western women flock to Jamaica, Cuba, and Africa for men. This is the first I have ever heard of the men traveling abroad to provide services and to Vietnam of all places. There are East African female prostititutes from Uganda and Kenya in Thailand, both Bangkok and Pattaya. Every few months a few dozen are rounded up and deported.

“New 3D holographic technology preserves Holocaust survivor stories in Illinois museum.”

At the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie, you can ask the Holocaust survivor’s hologram a question through a microphone. The actual survivor spent several days answering over a thousand questions, so the computer matches your question with the most relevant answer on file. This is courtesy of Steven Spielberg’s Shoah Foundation at the University of Southern California.

A shame we can't do the same for witchcraft & sorcery "survivors". Of which there were a million times more.
Oh well, we can still consult old court records and documents for confessions, eyewitnesses, and all the world's brightest legal minds confirming the truth of witchcraft & sorcery.
The hologram holocaust is a perfect symbol of just how much smoke & mirrors the storyline is.

Hologram Holocaust, it doesn't get more truthful than that.
The mere fact that we have so many "survivors" when it's claimed that 'the Germans tried to kill every Jew they could get their hands on' blows away the impossible '6M Jews, 5M others, & gas chambers'

Welcome back Linh, your Journalism is always interesting and informative. You are much better than ninety percent of the American MSM. I grew up in Philadelphia fifty years ago and find your reports interesting and poignant. The Catholic Church and school I which I happily grew up in is now by the Inkys report a “bare ruined Choir” and opium den. The neighborhood library at McPherson Square is now ground zero for the so called “opiate epidemic”. It is hard to believe that the American ruling class just ignores the whole collapse or runs around frantically trying to put a band aid on it. I now live in Amish country in central Pennsylvania but still follow the collapse of a once great city. Last summer we drove to Michigan and had to go through Detroit , the city in which my wife was born. What a disaster ! Reminds you of Hiroshima after the a bomb. Keep up the good work; I now use your articles, Sputnik and various blogs in order to find out what is really going on in the world.

there are even black male prostitutes, a phenomenon that’s particularly pleasing to certain middle-aged Vietnamese women.

A shame we can’t do the same for witchcraft & sorcery “survivors”. Of which there were a million times more.
Oh well, we can still consult old court records and documents for confessions, eyewitnesses, and all the world’s brightest legal minds confirming the truth of witchcraft & sorcery.
The hologram holocaust is a perfect symbol of just how much smoke & mirrors the storyline is.

Hologram Holocaust, it doesn’t get more truthful than that.
The mere fact that we have so many “survivors” when it’s claimed that ‘the Germans tried to kill every Jew they could get their hands on’ blows away the impossible ’6M Jews, 5M others, & gas chambers’

They are also consistently hard working, personable, and invariably quite good looking. All hold traditional values, are disgusted with a lot of the stuff “Americans put up with,” and have also done quite well for themselves.

Linh doesn't understand that the sundry American airports and other infrastructure he disparages were designed and built while Asians were living in huts. Flying into Houston a couple of weeks ago, I was cognizant of how primitive much of the airport looks compared to some of its counterparts in the developing world. But I have the good sense and intelligence to understand why. There's a good reason why the Empire State Building looks stone age compared to Burj Khalifa. Duh...it's much, much older.

What's more, the Asian countries he extols practice construction by dictatorial decree, people's concerns be damned. Just try and put a brand new airport in any American community and you'll be in for decades of rancor, lawsuits and endless environmental impact studies. It's the reason why while brand new, sparkling oil refining complexes are going up all over the world, we haven't built a new one in 40 years.

LHR: A mile walk to practically anything; moving between terminals is a PITA, as it involves walking another mile to catch the "free" shuttle provided via the Heathrow Express.

LCY: Almost all waiting space is now restaurant or bar seating. You are lucky to get a seat, which you will want because flights are often delayed or cancelled.

Any London Airport: International connections often involve transit between airports, e.g. Heathrow to Gatwick: Have fun with that.

FRA: If you aren't walking a mile to your gate, you're probably on a bus to walked a half mile to catch. If you are lucky enough to deplane at a terminal, you face the real possibility of having to climb stairs with your bags. If it's a bus, it will surely involve stairs.

AMS: Admittedly tolerable, but I haven't flown in there much since Amsterdam is better served by Rail.

American airports are decrepit and dirty, but they are generally more passenger friendly.

All those cesspools of “financial capital” don’t serve human beings. You should only arrive in such cesspools via private jet and chauffeur. You are still a wannabe?

In Los Angeles one of the new train lines runs up the 105 freeway to Los Angeles International; and then dead-ends a mile short of the airport. Anyone arriving at the airport has to take a shuttle to get to the train station. This baffles all reasonable people, and especially foreign visitors. I was once flying back home and was chatting with a European couple visiting LA for the first time. They asked me where to find the train connection at the terminal, assuming that of course, a modern big city airport has train connections for ground transport. I had to explain that the taxi lobby seems to have a lot of juice with the LAX planning commission. It is poetic that since then, the taxi business overall is getting killed by Uber and its competitors.

The Los Angeles train stopping a mile from the airport and the annoyance of transferring to a bus to the airport and then a shuttle bus to the terminal is not baffling at all.

When the thing was designed the bus company owners had the influence to make it that way. The bus contract means millions of dollars a year.

And who cares about the convenience of travelers.

The Chicago subway has stops all over the city and some suburbs. And the airport stop is right inside the main terminal. So travelers can get on a subway anywhere in the city and get out right in the terminal.

San Francisco added a new inconvenience. Instead of driving around the arrival roads so a traveler can just wave them down a traveler has to make a reservation and then walk a mile or so to a far off parking lot to find the van.

I had a similar experience yesterday, returning from a trip to China and Taiwan. I flew from Taipei to JFK, where all US passport holders got stuck in the area with the self scanning machines. We were there for so long that the line for non-US citizens completely disappeared and all of the US passport holders were stuck in the area with the machines and not moving an inch. I texted my wife, and she responded to me to be good, but it was too late. I had already begun to give a lot of hell to the woman who was supposed to be directing traffic. “Let us out of here. What are you guys doing?” I said, and later, “Let us over to the other side.” At that point she opened up the rope to the other side, and within twenty minutes the whole lot of us was in the baggage claim. Several people thanked me for my vociferous discontentment, and I had become a hero of the people.

Unlike you, however, I took the tram to Jamaica, where you can take a LIRR to Penn Station in one leg. Like you, I got on NJ Transit. As the cars banged and crashed, I thought of my recent train on the Taiwan HSR, and on several in China. What a joke it is that in the US many think we are still decades ahead of the rest of the world. If they only got out and had a look around they might realize that money spent on weapons and destruction means lack of investment in our own infrastructure. The NJ transit train got held up, and we were late getting into Hamilton, where my wife and children were waiting for me. “What the hell did you expect?” I asked. “Nothing in the US runs efficiently.”

Black Americans blazed a trail for all people of color. You would think this clown would be appreciative.

Did Asians just lift themselves up and out of poverty and exclusion by our boot straps, or do we owe a debt to the black Civil Rights struggle?

Linh, Dulles is a beautifully designed airport, so don’t be or sound like a far-left cultural ignoramus.

“Linh doesn’t understand that the sundry American airports and other infrastructure he disparages were designed and built while Asians were living in huts.”

    ie Kangz n shiet.

BTW, old European airports like Heathrow and Schiphol make most East Coast US airports look like slums, let alone newish(~40 years old) ones like Changi.

  65. Mr. Linh: you did not have to fly to Ha Noi for a flight to Hong Kong, there are direct daily flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Hong Kong.

Yes, it sucks to have to take two trains from JFK to Manhattan (AirTrain and NYC subway), but you didn’t have to take Amtrak from NYC to Philly. Instead, you can take the NYC subway A train to Jay St in Brooklyn (connected to the JFK AirTrain) then change to the F train on the same platform into Manhattan, after only two stops you will get off at East Broadway, then get on the ground and take the Chinese bus to Philly, only one block from the subway station (at corner of East Broadway and Allen St). This Chinese bus runs every hour and it is much cheaper and vastly more efficient then Amtrak or Greyhound. One way to Philly is only 12 dollars, round-trip 20 dollars, travel time 2 hours. The bus will drop you off at Philly’s Chinatown and from there you can take the SEPTA bus on 8th Street to go to South Philly where you live.

I hope this information is useful for your next adventure and see you at the Friendly Lounge some time this winter where i will buy you a drink, if you allow me to.

Added to which, most of us wouldn't even be here. I say us because my parents are from Nigeria. The 1965 Immigration Act was a direct offshoot of the Civil Rights Movement.

To quote again from the article I linked to earlier:

The Immigration and Nationality Act: The Act ended racist immigration bans that once excluded Latin Americans, Asians, and Africans from immigrating to the U.S. At the height of the Civil Rights Movement, the racist bans were viewed as an embarrassing contradiction to the Johnson administration’s civil rights agenda and thus the Act was signed into law by President Johnson at the foot of the Statue of Liberty in 1965. The immigration histories of the majority of Asian Americans living in the U.S. begin after that date. We would not number 18 million, and be rising faster than any other racial group as a percentage of the population if not for that Act.

Asians like Linh, who harbor pretensions to superiority vis-a-vis black people, are engaging in the timeworn tactic that "white ethnics" employed in the late 19th and early to mid 20th centuries. That is, having been mainstreamed and no longer suffering ethnic and religious persecution, they joined forces with their former oppressors to target black people. Well this strategy is flawed on multiple levels. First among them is the fact that Asians aren't exactly mainstream in America. They have a long way to go in that regard because unlike Poles, Irish, Jews, Greeks, etc., they are not European and "white." Moreover, obsequiously licking white supremacist booty in a sort of comical Uncle Chan routine will only animate the passions of recalcitrant white supremacists against him. Nothing he says or does will gain him entry into that club.

It's the reason why while brand new, sparkling oil refining complexes are going up all over the world, we haven't built a new one in 40 years.

This guy appears to be another Asian supremacist dimwit who thinks he can look down on black people, without whose civil rights struggle he'd be wearing black pajamas and eating rat meat in Vietnam.

Black Americans blazed a trail for all people of color. You would think this clown would be appreciative.

Hmm, Oroonoko here, being an avowed descendant of Nigerian immigrants is not only an American-African like the descendants of slaves but an actual African-in-America.

His sires, having fled a craphole African nation for the bounty of a White one at a time when hut-dwelling Chinese were already building the Bomb, not only carpetbagged off the riches of Euro civilization but even off the sweaty struggle of regular American-Africans (who still have to go back too, mind you) for their “civil rights”.

Oroonoko is so civilizationally challenged, alas, that he must condescend even to rob the Affirmative Action gibsmedats from the outstretched paws of honest-to-devil descendants of enchained wretches and– insult to injury– rolls his beady African eyeballs askance at the self-earned riches of Asian civilization too!

Los Angeles has a great convenience if you’re picking up someone. There is a parking lot just for people waiting to pick someone up. You have to stay with the car, it’s not for parking. The traveler gets on the shuttle bus for parking lot

That bus stops at the gate of the pickup parking lot and your ride and friend are waiting. It’s a great idea. It can also be used to drop someone off. They just get on the parking lot C bus to get to their terminal.

In reality, the Chinese have been on the west coast for a long long time, during which they accumulated wealth and progressed rapidly through the socio-economic ranks. What exactly did your trailblazers teach them?

Take a gander at old TV shows and movies to see how Chinese were treated prior to the civil rights movement. They were cooks and drivers or otherwise herded into fetid Chinatowns. For Chinese, the pre and post civil rights periods are like night and day.

    Further reading:

Three Things Asian Americans Owe to the Civil Rights Movement

But, the Asian American model minority myth, that unfounded but nonetheless popular lie that claims Asians in America were able to rise to success without the help of government programs and political reforms, makes the answer to my question of what Asian Americans owe to this legacy unclear to many. Did Asians just lift themselves up and out of poverty and exclusion by our boot straps, or do we owe a debt to the black Civil Rights struggle?

Most Asian Americans of my generation, the generation born in the U.S. in the 1960s, know the answer to that question is an emphatic yes.

We did not just pull ourselves up by our bootstraps. Instead, we owe a great debt to the Civil Rights Movement. I say the upcoming anniversary of the March is as good a time as any to start talking about it, regardless of our generation, and loud enough for the public to hear.

    https://www.racefiles.com/2013/07/31/three-things-asian-americans-owe-to-the-civil-rights-movement/

Those were TV shows and novies you moron, not exactly reality. A lot of west coast Asians did work as maids cooks handymen and the famous Japanese gardeners.

Millions of Whites and every other race and ethnic group worked those kind of jobs too. And what’s wrong with those jobs you arrogant snob?

Because of the plethora of Asian restaurants there are probably a higher percentage of Asian cooks, waiters and other restaurant workers than 100 years ago.

Chinese arrived in California as early as the 1830s fleeing the Taipeng rebellion.

What do you do for a living by the way that you can look down on cooks and maids? Or are you a 50 year old perpetual student of 5 th rate college grievance studies living on federal grants?

Mr. Linh, relying on statistics, delivers a very unfair and general assessment of black people that reveals his emotions rather than his intellect or analysis — however, the problem is deep.

Linh is trying to gain an audience. But he's doing so among a particularly odious crowd whose embrace of Linh makes him toxic to normal, rational people.

Linh lives in Philadelphia. Philadelphia has one of the highest black crime rates in the country. Other races are not safe from the Philadelphedia blacks.

Blacks have destroyed that town as they have destroyed great swaths of our great cities.

The only, only race that doesn’t despise blacks for their obnoxious behavior sexual depravity, bastard children on welfare affirmative action privileges and criminality are American Whites, especially Jews who just worship blacks

I have always thought all racial minorities in the US who are enjoying equal rights (legally and on papers at least) with whites need to look back at the Civil Rights movement and be very thankful for the bloody struggle of black people in their war for equality.

I don't know about that. What's correct is that you could have maintained a country that was essentially 90% white and 10% black. But white supremacists weren't satisfied with that. They had to hunt down, terrorize and enforce a system of de facto slavery on black people. And, of course, the counterreaction to those efforts produced the 1965 Immigration Act, among many other things your type laments.

Linh, Dulles is a beautifully designed airport, so don't be or sound like a far-left cultural ignoramus.

Dulles was designed at a time when you could --and to accommodate--be going directly from your taxi to the counter to the tarmac people-mover in exactly 1 minute. 1 minute. No waiting, no fuss. It was lovely in 1965. It wasn't so bad when People Express could get you from Dulles to Pittsburgh PAYING ON THE PLANE for $25 round trip. It was designed for that brief future we enjoyed with libertarian quasi-deregulation. It was designed for a future of US triumph and peace.

Then far-left government war-on-terror bureaucracy, smoking regulations, early check-in requirements and long waits, etc. set in. Then endless war.

1965 was wonderful. Not many people were around who’s given name rhymed with their surname.

Philly's homicide rate has increased in the last few years - like all US cities with large Black populations - due to the BLM effect.

    https://www.phillypolice.com/crime-maps-stats/

It's still way lower than at the height of the '90s crack wars, and maybe Trump's election will put a stop in the late Obama age collapse.

But, Philly, like all cities with large Black populations, is still far more dangerous than cities with fewer Blacks. Ron Unz wrote a pretty comprehensive breakdown of the numbers a few years ago. Basically, when it comes to crime, to a first order it's a bimodal distribution: Blacks and non-Blacks.

He cited places, where Hispanics have pushed Blacks out, that have seen precipitous declines in homicide (far bigger declines than the national decline). IIRC East Palo Alto was one. Compton in LA is another well known example.

And here’s the 2016 homicide report. Though making up 44.2% of the population, blacks commit 80.3% of the shooting offenses (fatal and non-fatal). Whites, making up 44.8% of the population, were responsible for 18.5%, and Asians, 7.4% of the population, committed 0.6%.

    Hi all,

Here are my two articles on blacks and crimes, “Blacks, Cops and a Sinking Economy” and “Death of a Nation?” From the latter:

In his 1899 book, The Philadelphia Negroes, W.E.B. DuBois observed:

“In the city of Philadelphia the increasing number of bold and daring crimes committed by Negroes in the last ten years has focused the attention of the city on this subject. There is a widespread feeling that something is wrong with a race that is responsible for so much crime, and that strong remedies are called for.”

No one says that all is peaches and cream in the black community. The main problem is your racist and pseudoscientific intimation that "black crime" is a product not of sociological and historical factors, but of diminished intelligence and hardwired pathologies. I wonder if you would jump to the same conclusion with regard to your fellow Vietnamese.

    From the Australian Parliament:

Vietnamese crime groups are involved in a wide range of criminal activities. ... [a witness] identified the major areas of Vietnamese-related criminal activity to include: Extortion; fraud; auto theft; terrorism (political and criminal); high-technology theft; gambling; prostitution; narcotics trafficking; and home invasion robberies.

5.3 In 1992, the then head of the Victoria Police's Asian division, Detective Sergeant Stephen Pierce, was reported as saying: 'Whilst the Vietnamese gangs lack organisation, they pose greater dangers due to their ease of mobility and transient nature, their random selection of targets, their lack of ties and ability to enact extreme violence upon their victims'. note#71 The South Australian Police Commissioner, Mr David Hunt, said in September 1994 that Vietnamese gangs were increasingly becoming involved in criminal activity in South Australia, particularly narcotics and extortion. note#72

How about Vietnamese criminal gangs that are wreaking havoc in multiple American cities? Is that attributable to low IQ?

Born to Kill, also known as BTK or Canal Boys, was the name of a notorious New York City-based street gang composed of first-generation Vietnamese immigrants. Their rise to power was in the 1980s when they ran New York City's Chinatown with an iron fist and quickly rose to become the most notorious Asian gang the United States had ever witnessed.[1] The early 1990s proved to be detrimental to the Vietnamese collective following the arrest and prosecution of most of their New York-based operatives by the fall of 1992.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Born_to_Kill_(gang)

On June 4, 1990, four young Vietnamese men forced their way into the North Harris County residence of a Laotian family, demanding money. When one member of the targeted family arrived home unexpectedly she was shot in the eye. After the robbery, the youths drove to Dallas, then to an Atlanta suburb where a gang member shot a Vietnamese businessman in the head during another robbery. They returned to Houston in December, six months after the home invasion, and robbed a grocery store. After that, they fled again. In February, they surfaced in North Carolina, where they robbed a jewelry store. After that, they drove to Denver, where they teamed up temporarily with another Vietnamese gangster. The group then drove to Wheat Ridge, Colorado, where they crashed a church service and robbed the worshippers. After that, the four were on the move again, heading back toward Houston, when they were stopped by the highway patrol near Colby, Kansas. Their odyssey consumed almost a year and covered a quarter of the nation.

And how about in Vietnam itself?

Petty crime, which includes pick-pocketing and snatch theft, is a problem in Vietnam. Traveling alone in remote areas after dark is of risk especially to foreigners. Violent crime is a growing issue; most cases of it are reported in the more developed areas of the country, such as Hanoi. Scams are common in the country, and foreign travellers have reported getting raped on fake motorcycle taxis (xe ôm) passed off as real ones.[citation needed] Confidence tricks are a fair sight in the country; often do foreigners receive invitations to somebody else's residence to have a "casual game", which then escalates into a high-stakes match. Counterfeit and unauthorized merchandise can be easily found in many areas of Vietnam

At around the same time period, Italian criminologist Cesara Lombroso said even worse things about his fellow Italians:

The United States government used the theories of Cesare Lombroso, a 19th century Northern Italian doctor, to stop more of his suffering, starving countrymen and women from immigrating.

Lombroso, a traitor to his own people, was convinced that there was such a thing as a “natural born criminal.” He measured the heads and body parts of thousands of fellow Italians — particularly Southerners — and came up with a description that matched the description of most of the immigrants coming over at the time: short, dark, hairy, big noses and ears.

He compared them to lower primates and said they were more likely to commit violent crimes when they arrived in the United States than immigrants from Germany, Norway, Austria, Sweden, England and every other European country. Lombroso — and a growing sea of American nativists — branded the Southern Italians savages and rapists, blaming them for the crime that was on the rise in the United States.

The United States Immigration Commission concluded in the infamous 1911 Dillingham report: “Certain kinds of criminality are inherent in the Italian race. In the popular mind, crimes of personal violence, robbery, blackmail and extortion are peculiar to the people of Italy.”

The correlation between low IQ and crime isn't pseudo-science. The data is solid.

Those with an IQ of 85 are more likely to be involved in crime than those with an IQ of 100.

In some of the nicer gated communities in SE Asia that I've been in, not only is the community surrounded by concrete walls, but each individual house has them too, and they ain't mere decoration. Some are a good 20 feet high and topped with shards of glass or even concertina.

In the middle class areas, 10 foot high walls and iron gates are de rigeur yet people still manage to break in and steal what they want.

On the other hand, I've been in dirt poor areas crowded with people and never experienced anything untoward.

What nonsense. During actual wartime, Joseph Needham kept an excruciatingly detailed diary up to and including every single meal he had in China and wandered all over the interior; not once did he mention thieves or brigands, only constant truck problems. More than a hundred years ago, E.A. Ross wrote specifically about the Chinese and specifically speaks of the safety of the land:

Throughout our journey the attitude of the people left nothing to be desired. Once only did we hear the epithet “foreign devil” and that was the innocent prattle of an urchin. We found mission ladies who had heard it but once in seven years. These ladies occupy stations by themselves, go chairing about the country alone, and are never molested or even insulted. They feel perfectly safe with any chairmen they pick up.

Unz provides a link to it, you can read it yourself:
    http://www.unz.com/book/e_a_ross__the-changing-chinese/

People and cultures can change fairly quickly - the Europeans of 1250 were quite different from the Europeans of 1500s, for example. Implementing capital crimes for just about everything might have fundamentally changed the character of the Anglo, for example. But for a culture to change, there must be a desire to change, and your constant low self-control rants to attack others demonstrate a fundamental lack of desire to do anything but cast aspersion and aggrandize your race.

As usual, I consider it a waste of time to actually address you. But insane claims about history are worth addressing.

Linh, I'm pretty sure I'm smarter than you. My high intelligence is demonstrated in the real world. You, on the other hand, are just some coonish Asian supremacist writing misguided screeds on an obscure extremist blog. You don't even understand the history of the country that gave you refuge. And you seem to be trying to galvanize opinion against her black citizens who have been here for over 400 years, built the country and fought in every single war (including the one in which one Vietcong equaled about 100 of you guys). Based on my research, if your side fought as well as you ran from battle we wouldn't be having this conversation, as you would right now be ensconced in your glorious Vietnam, far and away from the black Americans you despise.

  101. Winston says:

Black Americans blazed a trail for all people of color. You would think this clown would be appreciative.

i don’t think respect can be gained through civil rights movement. It has to be earned by one through his deeds, morals, and accomplishments. The civil rights movement merely served as catalysts of what was likely to happen at that time and by no means was the cause. Given the circumstances in the 1960s, the white elites finally decided to give up and share some of the wealth and power with african americans, because they could afford to do that (due to the progress of productivity coming from science and technologies) and they thought it would cost less by assimilation rather than by genocide (an action American Indians had encountered before). After all, black at that time did not have the power to launch a revolution to subvert the US government. I believe the calculations the white elites were making then was that as black americans were getting more rights and protections, more labor force could be put in use and black would become more productive as a partner (an unspoken assumption many european countries are currently making about immigration). In other words, although the equal rights were given by the white elites, the elites were not so benevolent or altruistic.

Human by nature is selfish, and selfishness is natural and necessary for survival because the world has limited resources. Unless the pie is made bigger to be shared by more people, usually fighting/wars is the only way to decide who gets a slice. If we look at human history, we’d notice that every civilization at its early stage without exception had slavery. Powerful, rich, smart people enslave the weak, the poor, or the people different from them when society has low productivity, that is how nature works that survival of the fittest. As productivity progresses, we see that more and more groups of people are liberated (slaves, peasants, factory workers, women, gays, etc). The point is, although some of the equal rights may be granted due to a bigger pie, respect is not guaranteed to come along unless one has proven himself to be an equal part to the other party in deeds, morals, accomplishments etc. When i look at some democratic countries today (where each vote counts the same and the country gradually becomes a welfare state), i wonder if the potentially biggest problem for human race is that the sometimes brutal yet necessary natural law could no longer function as it used to because it is artificially resisted/relinquished due to unchallengeable doctrines or unrealistic ideologies.

"Let us out of here. What are you guys doing?" I said, and later, "Let us over to the other side." At that point she opened up the rope to the other side, and within twenty minutes the whole lot of us was in the baggage claim.

"What the hell did you expect?" I asked. "Nothing in the US runs efficiently."

What a joke it is that in the US many think we are still decades ahead of the rest of the world.

I’ve been to “third world” countries that are often sneered at my ignorant Americans with similar attitudes as that, and all I have to say is that they really would benefit from getting off the couch once in a while.

I know that you are not an African – they would never say anything so ridiculous. The blacks that are committing violent crimes aren’t the ones who fought for civil rights. It is an insult that you would lump the two groups together. You sound like that troll Tiny Duck who is always posting on the Unz Review.

I'm not African. I'm American of African descent.

Secondly, blacks aren't the only ones committing violent crimes.

Secondly, blacks aren’t the only ones committing violent crimes.

    Now that’s an understatement!

The US military, while employing blacks, is in essence a violent white boy protection racket. The US government is effectively a violent white boy run extortion racket.

    Hi all,

Here are my two articles on blacks and crimes, "Blacks, Cops and a Sinking Economy" and "Death of a Nation?" From the latter:

In his 1899 book, The Philadelphia Negroes, W.E.B. DuBois observed:

"In the city of Philadelphia the increasing number of bold and daring crimes committed by Negroes in the last ten years has focused the attention of the city on this subject. There is a widespread feeling that something is wrong with a race that is responsible for so much crime, and that strong remedies are called for."

No wonder so many folks throughout history have been upset with white government.

There are both qualitative and quantitative differences between street crime and the state sponsored variety.

In some of the nicer gated communities in SE Asia that I’ve been in, not only is the community surrounded by concrete walls, but each individual house has them too, and they ain’t mere decoration. Some are a good 20 feet high and topped with shards of glass or even concertina.

In the middle class areas, 10 foot high walls and iron gates are de rigeur yet people still manage to break in and steal what they want.

On the other hand, I’ve been in dirt poor areas crowded with people and never experienced anything untoward.

People and cultures can change fairly quickly – the Europeans of 1250 were quite different from the Europeans of 1500s, for example.

Don’t complain about the airtrain to Howard Beach. It used to be a shuttle bus. I remember leaving Manhattan several hours earlier than usual for an international flight (Before 9/11 and the TSA bullshit) with the intent of watching a basketball game in the airport bar. The bus took two-hours to reach my terminal. Had I not left so early, I may have missed my flight. Another time I had to take a shuttle bus from the Miami airport to the Trirail station. It had a flat tire enroute. The ordeal cost me four hours. On the flip side, SEPTA’s Yellow line from the Philadelphia airport to Center City is tops.

    Dear Okechukwu,

You, Sir, are of extremely low intelligence, since even after several days of arguing against me, you still don't understand what I wrote. Here's the relevant passage:

I stated that there are two sides to this debate. Simple as that.

You also have little impulse control, for you wasted no time in hurling racist insults at me:

This guy appears to be another Asian supremacist dimwit who thinks he can look down on black people, without whose civil rights struggle he’d be wearing black pajamas and eating rat meat in Vietnam.

Black Americans blazed a trail for all people of color. You would think this clown would be appreciative.

Learn to read, young man, and some manners.

    Linh

Linh, I’m pretty sure I’m smarter than you. My high intelligence is demonstrated in the real world. You, on the other hand, are just some coonish Asian supremacist writing misguided screeds on an obscure extremist blog. You don’t even understand the history of the country that gave you refuge. And you seem to be trying to galvanize opinion against her black citizens who have been here for over 400 years, built the country and fought in every single war (including the one in which one Vietcong equaled about 100 of you guys). Based on my research, if your side fought as well as you ran from battle we wouldn’t be having this conversation, as you would right now be ensconced in your glorious Vietnam, far and away from the black Americans you despise.

You came here from Nigeria, correct? It didn't even take a civil war or a totalitarian government to chase you away from your wonderful homeland.

Again, I said nothing against black people in my article beyond pointing out the appalling, out of control murder rate among black Americans, but this alone has set you off on your ludicrous rants. I don't hate black Americans, only angry and lying morons like you.

Keep raving, my man. You're cementing your reputation as the in-house clown.

...Well to be perfectly honest, Linh; that is an incredibly high pantheon of achievement, and this gentleman, as little as you may like him, as quite a few years and hundreds more posts before he even breaks into the top ten.

The bomb? Easy to build. There are even instructions online.

America was never a Euro civilization. After all, Euros fled their shitholes to come to America.

Oroonoko is so civilizationally challenged, alas, that he must condescend even to rob the Affirmative Action gibsmedats from the outstretched paws of honest-to-devil descendants of enchained wretches

Without Affirmative Action whites would lose a significant portion of their wealth, having been on the gravy train for over 50 years via white women (the prime beneficiaries of Affirmative Action).

and– insult to injury– rolls his beady African eyeballs askance at the self-earned riches of Asian civilization too!

Asian civilizations are rich? Who knew? Aren't some of the poorest countries in the world in Asia? The author's own Vietnam isn't exactly a powerhouse.

Asian civilizations are rich? Who knew?

    Everyone except you.
