Adam Ward, Alison Parker, Vester Flanagan
Adam Ward, Alison Parker, Vester Flanagan

handholdinggunThe two commonest topics stirred up by crazy shootings like Vester Lee Flanagan II’s murder of reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward, are, one, gun control, and two, treatment of the mentally ill. Nobody has anything to say about either than makes much sense to me.

Gun control? Plenty of jurisdictions have more liberal gun laws than Virginia, with very little gun crime. The BBC reported two years ago that the nation of Iceland is, quote, “awash with guns,” yet the homicide rate in Iceland is essentially zero. Similarly with Switzerland. Vermont has the most liberal gun laws in America, yet it’s not notorious as a hotbed of gun crime.

The mentally ill? It’s plain from the manifesto that Flanagan was crazy as a coot: or, to quote his own precise words, “Yeah, I’m all f—-d up in the head.”. LikeDylann Roof in Charleston, Flanagan was in fact in the long line of homicidal lunatics in America who have hoped to ignite a race war. As Radio Derb pointed out back in June, that line also includes kindred psychos Charles Manson46 years ago and John Brown 156 years ago. Nations have their own styles in lunacy, and this is one of the classic American styles.

But do we even have a firm definition of “mentally ill”? Do we even want one? I’m not sure that I do. Many Goodwhites believe that we Badwhites are mentally ill for not going along with the Narrative. I’m sure a lot of them would like to lock us up in asylums, as happened to dissidents in the old U.S.S.R.

The father of Alison Parker, the murdered TV reporter, grabbed both issues at once. He said his life’s work from now on would be to, quote, “make sure crazy people don’t get guns.” [Father of Slain Virginia Reporter Vows to ‘Shame Legislators’ into Passing More Gun Control , by AWR Hawkins Breitbart.com,August 27, 2015]

I understand how Mr. Parker feels, and sympathize with his grief; but the functional definition of the term “crazy person” is mostly “a person who has done a crazy thing.” Until a person has done a crazy thing, he’s not considered crazy—not by the authorities, at any rate.

A friend of mine actually did go crazy. We knew it, his poor wife knew it, everyone around him knew it; yet efforts to get the authorities interested were futile. The definition of “crazy,” so far as public authorities are concerned, is that you did something seriously, indisputably crazy: burned your house down or…shot someone.

As I said, I have yet to hear any commentator say anything useful about either gun control or the identification and treatment of crazy people. Taking guns away from law-abiding people will just leave criminals with all the guns. Allowing the authorities to define crazy down will end up depriving all nonconformists of their liberties.

I like my liberties, thanks all the same. I’ll take my chances with lunatics, including lunatics with guns.

Another point: You might think that what follows trespasses on the edge of bad taste, but it seems to me it’s worth noting. It has to be said that from the point of view of the Cold Civil War, the Virginia murders were in all probability instances of friendly fire.

Of course I don’t want to see anybody murdered, least of all a comely young woman: slender and blonde, 24 years old. That adds an extra layer of awfulness.

(That it should do so is grossly unfair—I speak as an uncomely geezer male here, and hey, geezer male lives matter!—but it does do so, for deep and sound biological reasons. In what Charles Darwin called “the struggle for life,” sperm is cheap, but eggs are expensive. We instinctively value comely young women higher than pock-marked old geezers).

Nevertheless, although I don’t know the particular political outlooks of reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward, I do have some acquaintance with the staff of local TV stations. They are Goodwhites to a man and a woman. In all likelihood, Vester Lee Flanagan murdered two people whose commitment to the Narrative was as firm as Michelle Obama‘s.

The same irony was on display in Charleston. Dylann Roof didn’t shoot up an Al Sharpton demonstration or a Louis Farrakhan rally. He shot up a room full of harmless old black church people—people Sharpton or Farrakhan would sneer at contemptuously as Uncle Toms.

Friendly fire, see? If Vester Flanagan really wanted to stick it to the white devils, he would have shot Jared Taylor, or Colin Flaherty, or…me.

That would be too rational, though. Lunatics, by definition, are not rational—a fact for which I guess we, certainly I, should be grateful.

As VDARE.com’s Alexander Hart has demonstrated, the key point in Main Stream Media coverage of the Moneta shooting is that this crime goes against the Narrative.

The Narrative, capital “N,” is the mental picture of the world cherished by the Goodwhite side in the Cold Civil War against Badwhites. A core component of theNarrative is that Badwhites are full of malice towards blacks, and are always seeking ways to harm them. They lurk around in dark places, nursing their guns—and probably their Bibles, too—just waiting for a black victim to come by.

As Michelle Obama famously expressed it, perfectly in tune with the Narrative: “As a black man, you know, Barack can get shot going to the gas station.”[60 Minutes February 2007.] Blacks in general, but especially gentry blacks like Mrs. Obama, are totally, seamlessly in thrall to the Narrative.

ORDER IT NOW

This particular article of Goodwhite faith is entirely contrary to reality. I hang outwith Badwhite types a lot. I see very little malice towards blacks. What I see far more is the desire not to be forced to mix with them. “Freedom of association!” is the rallying cry. The malice and hatred that I see is directed against Goodwhites—against their arrogance and power and dishonesty.

That’s why I call this the Cold Civil War. It’s whites hating whites. Nobody much on either side, lunatics like John Brown and Dylann Roof excepted, actually cares much about blacks.

As for wanting to harm blacks: As I and many others have explained, on Department of Justice statistics, blacks are far more dangerous to whites than whites are to blacks. Sample quote from me on this point, calculating from those government statistics:

While homicide is a very rare event and we are dealing with tiny probabilities here, any given black was almost fifteen times more likely to have killed a white in 2013 (probability 0.001 percent) than any given white was to have killed a black (probability 0.000068 percent).

When it comes to articles of faith, though, reality is not the point. The point is to affirm the Narrative and pronounce anathema on those who dare to dispute it.

The significance of an interracial murder is therefore determined, in the Goodwhite mind, by the race of the victim and the race of the killer. Who is the subject, who the object? Or as Lenin expressed it very pithily, though in a different context: “Who, whom?”

The Charleston church shooting was totally Narrative-compliant: a crazy white guy murdering nine harmless blacks. Gleeful Goodwhites, with the MSM and political establishments in full howling accord, were easily able to leverage it into a campaign to abolish the Confederate Battle Flag, a longstanding goal of theirs. That’s the kind of thing you can do with the Narrative wind in your sails.

The Hartford Distributors shooting five years ago, by contrast, when black psychoOmar Thornton murdered eight white co-workers, was counter to the Narrative. So it was not followed by any MSM campaign to ban anything, and the MSM shoved the story down the memory hole as fast as they decently could.

Who, whom? That’s what determines the MSM approach and coverage.

Here’s an anonymous blogger who goes by the intriguing handle “posttenuretourettes,” suggesting he’s a retired academic. He doesn’t tell us what his academic field was, but he sure knows his Russian literature. Quote from him:

Chekhov has a short story called “A Chameleon,” which revolves around an incident where a dog indisputably nipped a man’s finger. The actual investigation hinges not so much on what happened, though—but rather on who the dog belongs to. When the policeman at first thinks it’s just some mutt, either stray or owned by one of the little people, he threatens to have the owner fined and the dog put down. When, however, it’s suggested that the dog belongs to the General, the policeman takes a sudden interest in how exactly the hapless bitten fellow managed to provoke the nice dog. They go through several cycles of this, with the policeman’s tone towards the dog/victim changing from menace to endearment, depending on who-whom.

Perhaps Lenin had that story in mind when he asked “Who, whom?”

So it’s fair to guess that while the Charleston killings will still be brought up by MSM Goodwhites a year or five years from now as an example of Badwhite depravity, these Virginia killings will be comprehensively forgotten, as the Hartford killings have been.

Oh look—a squirrel!

  1. Excellent article Mr. Derbyshire.
I’ve noticed also the absence of pop-psychology ‘profiling’ of the killer – in this case he is not denounced/accused of misogyny, racism, had an ‘obsession with firearms’ he does not ‘rant’ he leaves a ‘manifesto’ And we told to believe this is ‘gay backlash’ against ‘homophobia’ So in the minds of ‘Goodwhites’ this is regrettable, but, understandable. I’m sure Ta-Nehisi-Coates is working on it right now.

Heart breaks especially for the Ward family. So far as I know, they didn’t rush forward to denounce the white-privilege gun culture, and as a result, their son was the first victim footnoted and buried in a media memory hole, a mere day or two after the atrocity.

Even as Democrats shamelessly cover themselves in the Charleston killings for the next 16 months like a shroud of virtue, speaking the name “Adam Ward” out loud – like uttering “Chanon Christian” or “Brad Heyka” or “Gregory Glen Biggs” or “Heather Muller” or “Frank Fazio” or “Richard Nettleton”, or any of the tens of thousands just like them – will likely constitute the sort of “dangerous” rhetoric redolent of the contemptible judgmentalism of a straight-up race-iss. (We honor Diversity’s collateral damage best by proudly ignoring it.)

RIP, Adam Ward. Contrary to media accounts, you were here and you mattered – until you were murdered by a black parasite and predator. May future generations, in a civilization somehow still standing, remember your name.

Bryce waited anxiously until he saw that Ward had panned to Parker before opening fire on her, over Ward’s shoulder. It is really an awful detail that he waited, hoping a whole bunch of people would see her mutilated. Being a very poor shot, we never see that.

It’s refreshing to hear her death recognized as a greater loss because she was young and attractive. Since the killer was a washed up male prostitute, maybe her beauty contributed to his jealous anger.

To be fair, the fact that he wasn’t a pretty blonde lady had more than a little to do with it, too.

  8. The liberatarian argument in favour of gun freedom is a dishonest one. If liberals got their wish for greater gun control, their probably would be fewer liberals killed by guns. Gun-related deaths are lower in most other western countries.

Crazy people are often loners who are disliked by others and will struggle to get referees for their gun licences. Many also have criminal records, are on disability welfare for mental illness, or have been hospitalised for mental health issues. All these factors will stop you getting a gun in most western countries (especially if you’re after a compact automatic weapon, which police are rightly more suspicious of).

However, there would be more home break ins, more car jackings, more black on white assaults and rapes, and more white flight and white nationalism. In other words if gun control was actually implemented, liberals would really suffer for it at the ballot.

  9. The Narrative isn’t that much about violence against blacks by white civilians, though its believers will play that up on the rare occasions when it happens. It is about violence against blacks by white authority figures, especially police. Recall that the black version of “The Talk” was all about how young black men need to act when confronted by police, not about how feral gangs of white boys were out to hunt them down.

  10. AnalogMan says:

Do you think Flanagan cared about his victims’ politics? Do you think The Goodwhites do? No, they don’t; they only care that we care about the victims.

In South Africa, the top cop is a mulatto called Robert Macbride (what is it with these Irishmen?). He got the job as a reward for services to the revolution, to wit, bombing a bar in Durban, killing two white women. At least one of his victims also turned out to have been an ANC supporter, which considerably lessened my sense of loss, but I never heard any expression of regret from either Macbride or the ANC. To them, she was just another White. Same with this case.

This same Macbride, incidentally, first made the news for beating up a White prostitute for declining his custom, because she only did business with White men. Which just goes to show that in South Africa, at least at that time, and I suspect even now, even the prostitutes have more class than a lot of modern Western liberal women.

The libertarian argument is dishonest because we are prohibited from “treating people differently on the basis of race,” (which means treating blacks with more suspicion and hostility than whites, but not vice versa), even when differential treatment would make obvious sense. Hence the choice is between a system in which weapons are tightly restricted, except for the connected and the criminal, or a system in which they are freely available to all who can pass a minimal background check, including some number of people who probably shouldn’t have them.

This is because any greater-than-minimal test (e.g., are you a convicted felon or a drug dealer?) must necessarily operate through the Who? Whom? filter, lest Jesse Jackson start asking why it is that 95% of white applications are granted, but only 50% of black applications, lest black politicians gain power in the locality and flip that ratio around for reasons of connection / racial solidarity, lest etc. Given that risk — which we have seen happen over and over again at the local level — we prefer a system of free availability and dealing with the occasional tragedy.

It is unfortunate that we cannot have honest and competently administered government, but who ever thought democracy in a nation populated by multiple mutually hostile ethnic groups was a good idea?

Yes, I can relate to Vester’s pain. I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen a box of crackers sitting on my kitchen table. :)

Changing the subject slightly, I was rather amazed by the number of postings on youtube that are claiming this murder was a hoax. People making the claim are both black and white. Of course, many of these people also claim Sandy Hook was a hoax, sooo….

But their “proof” is the very strange on screen reaction of both the Alison Parker’s father and (especially) boyfriend, who kind of come across more as bad actors than grieving loved ones. I don’t believe it was a hoax, of course, but the reaction of these two – on the very day she was killed – does come across as smarmy and even a little creepy. Subsequent photos of the dad show him to be a little more emotive and human, however.

I do not believe anyone in the dominant media has suggested that he was motivated by anger over genuine homophobia, but rather by the fact that he was insane, and perceived non-existent homophobia (and racism), whenever he looked at anything (the guy actually killed his own pet cats, for their “racism,” for crying out loud). The dominant press have been pretty honest about how they’ve reported the basic facts of this story. But due to the whole who/whom dynamic, they just don’t give a crap about any of its ramifications, and will soon forget all about it, other than perhaps when its time to further advocate for future gun control measures.

Reality often seems at odds with what we expect or imagine reality to be. The ‘official’ story that Susan Smith drove her children into a lake is completely at odds with how I imagine women to behave with their children, yet I see no reason to believe it didn’t happen aside from it confounding my expectations. I realize that nobody has a 100% perfect understanding of how the world works, including the interaction of things with which we imagine we are familiar. Conspiracy theorists often appear to have excessive faith in their knowledge and ability to anticipate all possible ways events might unfold. There’s a psychological word for such excessive confidence, it is called Dunning-Kruger syndrome. Not every detail of reality can be reproduced in a police report, news account or jury trial. That doesn’t make it wrong or a conspiracy.

Well Mr. Derbyshire raises some excellent points, like the fact Iceland and Switzerland are awash with guns, yet there are few shootings. This tells us that having a lot of people with guns does not mean that a country in which a lot of people own guns means there will be a lot of shootings. Still the fact is that there are an awful lot of shootings here in this country. They may be viewed as statistically insignificant when compare to the entire population, but much higher than in Iceland or Switzerland. Every morning I hear of shootings during the night here in the Raleigh, NC area, and all too often mass shootings of school children occurs in many sections of the country. So why is it the case here and not in Iceland or Switzerland?

Notice they both are smaller countries, and countries that have not been involved in wars or military actions with other countries in modern times.

And it has to be recognized that now there are so many guns in circulation among the good and bad, the teens and the elderly, that restricting gun sales is not likely to be effective. But here in Raleigh a young fellow was on trial for murdering a family when he was 15. He had an arsenal. Another 13 year old was murdered by several 18 and 19 year olds recently, part of some gang violence it is suspected. This is certainly something to be concerned about.
