I loathe and fear the Cultural Revolution we’re undergoing. Friends of mine were caught up in its prototype, the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution that consumed China fifty years ago. I’ve sat listening to their stories. What I see happening here today is all too similar.

I don’t want to be accused of hyperbole, though. Similar does not of course mean identical. I doubt what’s happening here will turn as homicidal as the Chinese model. To suggest that would be to do a dishonor to the millions who suffered and died in Mao Tse-tung’s terror.

One of Steve Sailer’s commenters called this present manifestation “the nerf gun cultural revolution.” I think that captures the schoolyard quality of the thing, the infantilism, the lack of corpse-piles.

Today’s cultural revolution is not entirely non-homicidal, mind. The pull-back of policing following the Ferguson and Baltimore hysterias has led to more murders.

And along with homicide you have to consider suicide. A frequent result of the persecutions in China was that the person being persecuted would kill himself. The writer Lao She is only the most famous example.

Well, Wednesday this week Kentucky State Representative Dan Johnson shot himself after a woman accused him of molesting her five years ago. I’m guessing we’ll see more suicides before sanity is restored.

That of course relates to the sexual-harassment witch-hunts, currently the Red Guards’ most active front — the Pervnado, to use the word that seems now to have definitely established itself.

A striking and depressing feature of the Pervnado panic: the cowardice of employers. We seem to be at the point where any joker can call up a media company — a TV or radio network, a movie studio, a magazine — tell some tale about a male employee putting his hand on her thigh two or three presidents ago, and the guy is outside on the sidewalk holding a pink slip faster than a dose of salts through a widder-woman.

Poster boys here: Garrison Keillor of Prairie Home Companion fame and the spin-off show on National Public Radio, and Ryan Lizza of New Yorker magazine. Both were dropped with astonishing speed while sound vibrations from the voices of their unknown accusers were still traveling through the air.

In neither case was there the least pretense of due process. It’s true that employment, except under some carefully-written contract, is not a legal or constitutional right. It’s also true that I, as a freedom of association absolutist, cheerfully support the right of employers to hire and fire at will, for any reason or none.

For long-time employees like Keillor and Lizza, though, whose work must have brought in significant revenues to their employers, surely there are civilized courtesies to be observed. Perhaps in these cases the lack of visible courtesy — no, make that “the gross visible dis-courtesy” — was softened with a golden handshake under the table, I don’t know.

The case of Garrison Keillor is by far the creepier of the two. I don’t mean that he is creepy, though for all I know he might be. I never cared for Keillor’s stuff myself, although my wife liked his radio program. What’s creepy — really, disturbingly creepy, way creepier to my way of thinking than any conceivable interaction between a guy’s hand and a gal’s thigh — is the way his host organization, Minnesota Public Radio, has made him an unperson.

David Vossbrink at the San Francisco Mercury-News had a good piece on this December 4th. Quote:

Garrison Keillor has been disappeared into the Memory Hole. If you look for his biography or the archived shows from a half century of “A Prairie Home Companion” on the website of Minnesota Public Radio since his fall from grace, you’ll now find only this: “Sorry, but there’s no page here.”

Keillor and his entire body of work from “A Prairie Home Companion” and “Writer’s Almanac” have been effectively erased from the archives of MPR, along with the work of all the other storytellers, singers, poets and production staff who made the shows successful.

Am I right? Is that creepy, or what?

ORDER IT NOW

I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that New Yorker magazine is calling in all the old issues with a Ryan Lizza article in them so that some Winston Smith employee down there at One World Trade Center can cut them out and feed them down the memory hole.

Or perhaps they are following the lead of the USSR in 1954. In that year the publishers of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia had just put out a new volume with a gushing four-page article on secret-police chief Lavrenty Beria. While they were still distributing it to libraries and colleges, Beria unfortunately fell out of favor, was arrested and shot. The state publishing house sent out a four-page substitution with articles on Wilhelm Bergholtz, an 18th-century general, and the Bering Sea, along with instructions for pasting them over the Beria pages. Quote:

The aforementioned pages should be cut out with scissors or blade, leaving inside a margin on which the new page can be pasted.

If no-one from Minnesota Public Radio is available to help New Yorker with this, I’m sure there must be some elderly Soviet librarians still alive who’d be glad to offer advice.

  2. I’m totally enjoying this.

Let the loonies devour the loonies.

And even though Cultural Revolution did great damage(and many good people got hurt), there was an element of poetic justice.
Most victims were Maoists who had served the Chairman in creating and enforcing that monstrous system. Young Maoists attacked Old Maoists. It was commies calling other commies ‘capitalist roaders’.
The main victims were commie commissars and bureaucrats.

It’s like the Great Purge by Stalin killed fellow commies, the very people who built that vast prison-nation.

And should we feel sorry for Rohm and SA thugs?

Why are so many of the victims of the purge are on the Left?

Mr. Derbyshire’s commentary does not address this.

  5. Svigor says:

Hail, good question. A partial list:

    1. Big Media’s overwhelmingly leftist (it’s like Fox News; if leftists don’t all despise someone in BM for being “right-wing,” he’s leftist).

    2. Big Media is the First Estate, and is in the business of “news” and “entertainment,” so you get a double whammy where every firing is news; other firings may be happening in other industries, but it’s not “news.”

    3. The accusers know 2, so they’re more likely to come forward because so far, this has 100% been about extrajudicial punishment; almost none of this is about criminal charges, for example. You can’t be the center of the drama if there’s no drama.

    4. BM may be thinking they’re creating an environment conducive to forcing Trump out of office, so they’re further motivated to make hay while the sun is shining.

    5. All of the triggering events (IIRC) involved BM people; Cosby, Ailes, O’Reilly, and finally the big one, Weinstein. Again, publicity and celebrity are BM’s business.

    6. BM really is full of scum. The worst sociopathic pussyhounds go into BM. That’s fine if they’re good-looking enough to fill the hole inside themselves the old fashioned way, but if they’re not, they may need to turn to favors, harassment, coercion, rapeyness, etc.

  6. Svigor says:

7a. If you are both functional and malfeasant, you are going to be ostensibly leftist, period; it’s a survival mechanism in Big Media.

    8. These accusations tend to have at least a grain of truth to them. By and large, they aren’t simply calculated political attacks (Trump’s Election Witches possibly excepted) with no basis in fact. Guess who wacko leftist chicks work with? That’s right; wacko leftist guys.

  7. Svigor says:

I agree with Priss, I’m still enjoying The Great Puritan Purge of Big Media (and Politics). I just wish I’d bought corn futures.

  8. @Hail

Revolutions always devour their own. The only thing about the mess that isn’t Stalinist is they have no execution room in the basement of the Lefortovo (where Beria breathed his last) so they can neatly take care of the products of execution with a simply hosing down of the used area.

  9. The case of Garrison Keillor is by far the creepier of the two. I don’t mean that he is creepy, though for all I know he might be.

I’ve seen him in person a few times. “Creepy” is as good as any a descriptor. I’ve also seen his brother, who’s a bit thicker and a whole lot shorter, but otherwise a clone. That’s even creepier, though I know from mutual acquaintances that he’s a pretty good guy. Can’t say the same for the smug Garry.

  10. @Hail

Why are so many of the victims of the purge are on the Left?

For the same reason they’re all male.

  11. My guess is this panic is welcome by the companies because it’s a handy excuse to downsize, get rid of overpaid and over-the-hill personalities, and replace them with cheapie young ones.

Btw, speaking of PC and Mao’s Cultural Revolution, maybe it would be a good thing to see PC Asianized in the West. As Asians are uncool, if they become the face of PC, then PC will become uncool, and more kids will drop out. I mean who wants to take orders from yellow teachers pets and brown spelling bee champs who take in spelling ‘evilwhiteyissobad’.

More kids will rebel against PC that will be seen as ‘too Asian’ and ‘too teachers pet’.

Consider Madame Ellen Pao. Even San Fran Libs didn’t much care for her Princess Dragonmom Act.

    LOL. It updates itself.

On ‘layout’ option in Blogger, I added ‘my bloglist’ from ‘add a gadget’ option and dragged the bloglist to the center of the page. I then removed all sidebars.

I am sure they can be found in Brighton Beach and Miami in up scale Public Housing along with other Stalin’s Executioners who were brought to the US under the US Jackson–Vanik amendment and thereafter when Soviet Union started to decompose. Did anybody came up with the number how much did it cost to relocate all those Jewish Stalin’s Executioners into the US?

  15. Svigor says:

Leftists always devour their own. Particularly communists. The American Revolutionary War came off okay, but communists often herd their own into death camps even if they came to power via the ballot box (last I heard, the Chavezistas were doubling down and beating up their opponents for noticing the Chavezista destruction of Venezuela). Leftism is fundamentally anti-human so naturally they don’t do anything normal like take out their aggression on other countries.

My guess is this panic is welcome by the companies because it’s a handy excuse to downsize, get rid of overpaid and over-the-hill personalities, and replace them with cheapie young ones.

I’m from Missouri on this, at least insofar as the companies are concerned – I doubt they need excuses to downsize or bring in fresh talent. I can buy it vis-a-vis the audience, though; much harder for leftist mopes to stand up for their favorite leftist mope when he stands accused of molesting some leftist mope.

  16. Svigor says:

I just think the idea that Big Media is sitting around wishing they could fire all their top talent to “save money” is a bit much.

  17. peterike says:

I don’t care a lick about the Chinese that Mao killed — why should I? They are not my people. And I don’t care a lick about those being taken out in the Pervnado. Oh, I suppose it will roll up some good people eventually, but so far I don’t know of a single one that I’m not pleased about.

Sadly, all these Prog vermin being fired doesn’t deprive them of the many millions they’ve already presumably socked away. I wish there were quite a bit more actual arresting going on, because seeing them tossed in jail will be the butter on the popcorn.

  18. I believe the end is nearing, not in the religious sense but the end of civilized society as we once knew it.

  19. Brabantian says: • Website

Unlike the Maoist situation leveraging the testosterone of China’s ‘Youth Cadres’, today’s purges of pervs are being driven by an older demographic enjoying one final burst of attempting to seem relevant … whereas the kids are saying today, ‘It’s OK to be Right(-wing)’, as in the below posted by VoxDay:

« An actual, first-hand account from an SJW school counselor and his terrifying encounters with the fed-up, disaffected and angry white kids who never got to experience the economic prosperity nor the ethnically homogeneous homelands that their Baby Boomer, and, to a lesser extent, Gen X predecessors enjoyed: »

I work as a counselor at a school where there’s a lot of 4chan-esque right-wing boys who are coming up. The previous generation a year or two ago wasn’t too bad, but this generation coming up now is much more right wing.

My question is, how the fuck do I deal with this shit? How am I supposed to honestly give counsel to a kid with a Pepe shirt on? How do I talk to these kids who literally come to me and rant about affirmative action? 2 years ago these types barely existed and now they are everywhere, not only men but women too. They literally cannot control their right wing beliefs, they talk about it constantly, everywhere. They can’t have a discussion about fucking math without bringing up how women hate math and science and that is why they are unsuccessful. They can’t talk about English classes without talking about colleges are wiping away white authors because of Cultural Marxism. A kid came to me and ranted that his history classes ‘blamed white people too much’ for tragedies in the past and that made him uncomfortable.

I know my job is that people can come to me with whatever possible problems they want, no matter how controversial. But this is getting fucking out of hand. How do I do this?

And from Heartiste on how nearly half of all rape accusaitons are shown to be fake:

Eugene Kanin at Purdue conducted a study that showed, according to police reports from one city, that 41% of rape claims were untrue, and a full 50% of claims at two universities were untrue. Other researchers have come up with similar numbers for false rape accusations: Gregory and Lees, 1996: 45%. Jordan, 2004: 41%. Chambers and Millar, 1983: 22.4%, Grace et al., 1992: 24%. McDowell and Hibler, 1985: 27%. Buckley, 1992: 25%. Washington Post, Virginia and Maryland, 1991: 25%. Even the lowest number is TEN TIMES the number of false rape allegations that feminists will admit to.

These false allegations appear to serve three major functions for the complainants: providing an alibi, seeking revenge, and obtaining sympathy and attention. False rape allegations … reflect impulsive and desperate efforts to cope with personal and social stress situations.

The cuckoldry rate is 30 TIMES the actual rape rate … women are 30 times more likely to deceive men of their paternity than men are to [rape women].

It’s more that it’s the last desperate attempt by the second wave feminists to restore their position in the Coalition of the Fringes. In fact it’s already too late for them now. They have no credibility because, let’s face it, women are not oppressed. Not even a tiny bit oppressed. And none of the other victim groups in the Coalition are buying the idea of rich white women as an oppressed class.

The second wave feminists have been replaced by younger and much much crazier feminists. The ones who embrace intersectionality because it’s the best way to disguise the fact that college-educated white women are actually obscenely privileged.

I feel no sympathy for the second wave feminists but their replacements are truly terrifying.

Because this purge focuses on the media, and the media is mostly leftist.
Plus, before this the sexual harassment thought-police focused on conservatives more.
At any rate, it is enjoyable to see the cadres purge themselves; but there is always the danger of, like the Red Guards of old, becoming far more extreme than those purged. Therefore, it is important that, like Deng stopped the Gang of Four, this Pervnado doesn’t grow to massive proportions.

  25. J1234 says:

  26. G Pinfold says:

    Why the Left?

Obviously, because we’re all left now. Well, present company excepted. But how many celebrities, executives and politicians are openly real right?

Also, a kind of Pidgin Marxism has been crafted for the middlebrow tongue, and the nice ladies and virtue-signaling men of the South and the Midwest are starting to talk SJW like 1990s coastal and ivy league elites. These people are natural bastions. They don’t learn fast, but they learn well. Dumbing-down leftist ideas and force-pedaling them through schools and corporations has been a masterstroke.

Who knows where this will end. Things tend to move in circles; but that’s small consolation if the circles are really big.

Given the fact that Japanese culture is consistently rated as the second most influential in the world behind American culture, getting your wish might backfire. Its frequently noted here in Serbia and even when I was in Russia, that our youth are more enthusiastic about an Asian culture than we are of our own. It feels like every 15 year old on VK has “learning Japanese” as a hobby.

There is no authority that can stop it, because leftists demand ideological purity from their own kind. Anyone who steps outside the mental circle is ‘othered,’ turned against, and attacked. If you think of how cults deal with members who disobey, you’ll have a better idea about how this is going to play out. As long as the cult exists as an entity, anyone who dwells inside it can become a potential victim.

By the way, purging and turning against one’s own is a classic method that cult leaders use when it looks like there is a weakening of ideological belief in the rightness of the cult’s beliefs. It’s not an accident that this is happening about a year after Trump got elected. It’s very likely some of the purged made the mistake of hinting that maybe Trump or conservatism weren’t so bad (which may have been part of a very cynical and self-serving realignment to chase after power) and this has horrified the true believers on the left, who are attacking them to protect the cult.

  31. Thirdeye says:

The Cultural Revolution burned out because it wasn’t sustainable – the chaos was affecting the ability of the Chinese state to function. With the American Cultural Revolution we can see signs of being close to that threshold in academia. With Big Media it’s harder to tell. They’re not really in an environment where competence and talent are at a premium for operating to the requirements defined by their management. Mediocrity is acceptable as long as the advertising dollars keep coming in. Who rises to the top in corporate media has always been more a matter of politics than of distinctive talent.

  32. “It’s also true that I, as a freedom of association absolutist, cheerfully support the right of employers to hire and fire at will, for any reason or none.” Until it happens to you, of course…
