It’s great that we now have an administration in Washington, at any rate a Justice Department, willing to round up and deport illegal aliens. But federal officers charged with doing so are opposed by a mighty army of lawyers, products of our CultMarxified law schools this past forty years. They also face a lot of local apathy and cuckery. Case study: here on Long Island, where I live, in the outer-outer suburbs of New York City.

My county, Suffolk County, has a million and a half people — 630 per square mile average, though of course concentrated in towns and villages. Close to twenty percent of that million and a half are Hispanic—a colossal increase across the 25 years we’ve lived here. The biggest single group: Salvadorans. [Which Immigrant Group on Long Island Is the Largest?, By Patrick Young, Esq, LongIslandWins.com January 18, 2011] They started coming during the civil war in El Salvador during the 1980s. Lax enforcement, high fertility rates, and chain migration have done the rest.

Here’s a fact about El Salvador: On the latest numbers I can find, El Salvador ranks fourth in the world for intentional homicide. The rate is over 41 per hundred thousand.

To give you some benchmarks, with that 41 in mind, here are current homicide rates for some U.S. cities, also per 100,000 inhabitants:

  • Boston: 3
  • Washington DC: 8
  • Chicago 12
  • Detroit 20
  • and the winner is … St Louis at 29.

Murder map: Deadliest U.S. cities, CBS, 2017

So El Salvador, not much of which is urban, is more than twice as homicidal as Detroit.

That’s what we’ve been importing into Suffolk County in battalions and regiments this past forty years.

(And I should say that you can get some seriously different figures by going to different sources. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, for example, gives a 2015 figure of nearly 109 for El Salvador, ranking the country world homicide leader. My figure of 41, from the List25 website, is towards the low end of estimates I found.)

Every one of those estimates, though, has El Salvador in the top five nations by homicide rate.

If you were to implement a rational immigration policy, with well-informed analysts sitting around a table deciding which nations we should be really careful about taking immigrants from, there’d be a row of big bold asterisks next to El Salvador.

There are some counter-arguments you can make here. First off, while looking up those city homicide stats, I checked the figure for Suffolk County. It’s 0.9. That’s high—higher than the rate for Germany or Italy, and three times the rate for Hong Kong or Japan.

Still, set against St Louis or Chicago, we’re pretty non-homicidal out here on the island. So what’s to worry about?

And then, still playing devil’s advocate here, those multitudes of Salvadorans coming to my county were escaping from that astronomical homicide rate back home. They were looking for a peaceful life.

To both points I’d refer you to Jonathan Blitzer’s piece in the current issue of The New Yorker. Title: The Teens Trapped Between a Gang and the Law. Subtitle: “On Long Island, unaccompanied minors are caught between the violence of MS-13 and the fear of deportation.”

Sample quote:

In September, 2016, Nisa Mickens and Kayla Cuevas, aged fifteen and sixteen, were found dead in Brentwood, killed with machetes and baseball bats and mutilated beyond recognition. Thirteen members of MS-13 … were charged in their deaths. Between the beginning of 2016 and May, 2017, authorities in Suffolk County attributed seventeen killings to MS-13, and the county’s police department identified at least eighty-nine gang members who were undocumented immigrants.

So while a 0.9 homicide rate is pretty nice, without MS-13 hacking teenage girls to death we’d be even safer, perhaps down to German or Italian levels.

And if all our Salvadoran illegals are gentle peace-loving types striving to escape from the gangs back home, what are these MS-13 killers doing here?

Of course most of the Salvadorans are non-homicidal. So are most Salvadorans back in El Salvador. So are most people anywhere. If you import a great mass of people from one place, though, you’ll get a slice of that place’s culture. Salvadoran culture is homicidal.

It’s the non-homicidal element that propagandists like the New Yorker writer want you to know about, of course. Blitzer [Email him] starts us off with a long sob story about a Salvadoran lass, Juliana, whose father was killed by MS-13.

The gang then chased Juliana’s mother around El Salvador until the mother escaped, ending up an illegal immigrant on Long Island. Juliana was left behind. She got kidnapped, raped, and beaten — so she says — until eventually she headed north. She ended up on Long Island with her Mom, both illegal. At school — at school on Long Island — she was pestered by MS-13 gang members. Blitzer writes: “Juliana’s mother called the school to complain, but she was undocumented and didn’t press the issue.”

It’s a moving story to be sure. Dreadful things happen in the world, especially in countries with low levels of civilization like El Salvador and Somalia.

Again, though, why is this any business of mine? I’m a suburban homeowner, raising a family in a quiet neighborhood. Is my bourgeois suburban lifestyle something that someone should be indignant about? What am I, a kulak?

It’s hard to avoid the impression that Jonathan Blitzer is indignant about it. His contempt for white suburbanites seeps out from between the lines of his article:

Schools in Hempstead required the families of incoming students to produce documents proving guardianship and residency in the district, which very few of them had. This was illegal, and, when New York’s Attorney General threatened a lawsuit, the children were admitted.

Local property-tax payers are supposed not to mind this? And since when is it illegal for public schools to require proof of district residency?

I wish I’d known: I’d have sent my kids to school in the much richer village down the road a couple of miles.

Juliana’s story has a happy ending. Happy for her, I mean, not for us Suffolk County homeowners who’ve paid her schooling and Medicaid bills the past few years. Something called the Safe Passage Project, a non-profit legal-aid group in New York City, worked the system and got asylum for Juliana and her sisters.

The Safe Passage Project looks to be pretty well funded, by George Soros would be my guess.

That’s part of the army of lawyers I spoke about, working busily to thwart sensible immigration and to privilege undesirable foreigners over American citizens.

The local apathy and cuckery, I’ve watched develop. Twenty years ago my county was abuzz with citizens’ groups agitating for immigration law enforcement. I wrote articles about it for National Review.

I don’t see much of that now. The local newspapers editorialized about “hate” and “bigotry,” the cucks scolded and threatened, and we kulaks tired of fruitless protesting and got on with our deplorable whitebread suburban lives.

But—and it’s a big but—we voted for Donald Trump last November. He carried the county by seven points.

ORDER IT NOW

John Derbyshire [email him] writes an incredible amount on all sorts of subjects for all kinds of outlets. (This no longer includes National Review, whose editors had some kind of tantrum and fired him. ) He is the author of We Are Doomed: Reclaiming Conservative Pessimism and several other books. He has had two books published by VDARE.com com:FROM THE DISSIDENT RIGHT (also available in Kindle) and FROM THE DISSIDENT RIGHT II: ESSAYS 2013.

    Don't believe the Obama deportation stats. He conflated border removals with formal interior deportations to achieve the entirely bogus distinction of being the King of Deportations. Obama was a serial releaser of illegal immigrant felons from prison. Trump is way better, at least based on the hysterical left-wing news reports I'm reading from around the country. The proof of the pudding will be in the stats of course.

    Trump biggest mistake, considering he thinks himself a consummate deal maker, is not recognizing the power he has to force people to the negotiating table with him in the superior position. The Democrats think that by withholding votes that can get a DACA amnesty with no strings and eventually and amnesty for their parents due to the thin majority in Congress.

    However, Trump has all the cards at the moment. He can deport the parents of the DACA (and the DACAs if he so desires) and force the Democrats to run to the negotiating table. Yeah, the media will cry about breaking families apart but the "they were brought here and had no choice" shtick won't work with the parents. Let the media cry about the DACA parents who broke the law and forced the taxpayer to pay for their kids and see how the rest of America cars.

    The hysteria on the Left would imply that Trump really is having a positive impact on immigration, even if he has sold out to Goldman Sachs on most other issues.

    Then again, it is in the Left’s interest to keep their base riled up, so who knows?

    The stats for Chicago are misleading since the homicide rate emanates from only one-third of the population-the black third. The mayor, R Emanuel, has come up with a city identification card pitched to the illegals since all other legit people have other forms of identification. This is the major problem, that of the enablers and other co-conspirators who have expedited this process of illegal migration that’s taken place in such huge numbers for the past twenty-five years. These enablers have been political leaders at the very highest levels of our government as one glance at people such as Jeb Bush will show. It’s not what you the people want, it’s what the .1% wants that’ll be implemented. The only question is how the show gets stage-managed so as to keep the masses of taxpayers quiet.

    From 2,350 years ago in ancient Greece … a critique of immigration by no less than the famous Aristotle (c. 384-322 BCE) … Aristotle saying that often, either you expel the immigrants, or they take over and maybe even expel you … From Book 5 of Aristotle’s ‘Politics’, 1303a-b:

    Difference of race is a cause of faction, for just as any chance multitude of people does not form a state, so a state is not formed in any chance period of time.

    Hence most of the states that have hitherto admitted joint settlers or additional settlers have split into factions; for example Achaeans settled at Sybaris jointly with Troezenians, and afterwards the Achaeans having become more numerous expelled the Troezenians, which was the Cause of the curse that fell on the Sybarites;

    And at Thurii Sybarites quarrelled with those who had settled there with them, for they claimed to have the larger share in the country as being their own, and were ejected;

    And at Byzantium the additional settlers were discovered plotting against the colonists and were expelled by force of arms;

    And the people of Antissa after admitting the Chian exiles expelled them by arms;

    And the people of Zancle after admitting settlers from Samos were themselves expelled;

    And the people of Apollonia on the Euxine Sea after bringing in additional settlers fell into faction;

    And the Syracusans, conferred citizenship on their foreign troops and mercenaries and then faction set in and they came to battle; and the Amphipolitans having received settlers from Chalcis were most of them driven out by them.

    Here’s Aristotle on the habit of oppressive elites to prefer that their operational mafias be some kind of foreign tribe or aliens or ‘dual citizens’, in 1311a, 1314a:

    A king’s body-guard consists of citizens, a tyrant’s of foreign mercenaries … And it is a mark of a tyrant to have men of foreign extraction rather than citizens as guests at table and companions … feeling that citizens are hostile but strangers make no claim against him.

    A few more applicable-to-today phrases from the Greek sage, in 1313b-1314a:

    It is a device of tyranny to make the subjects poor, so that the people being busy with their daily affairs may not have leisure to plot against their ruler … Tyranny is a friend of the base [i.e., low-quality people]; the base are useful for base business, for nail is driven out by nail, as the proverb goes.

    And it is a mark of a tyrant to dislike anyone that is proud or free-spirited; for the man who shows a free spirit robs tyranny of its superiority and position of mastery.

    Above texts from Aristotle’s ‘Politics’, are taken from the 1944 Harvard translation by H. Rackham, text on the Perseus site. But since Aristotle and his translator were both Euro-heritage white guys …

  8. The important facts are:

    1. At least 90% of any immigrant group are not going to commit serious crimes.

    2. Nevertheless, the rate of serious crime per 100,000 people is 10 to 100 times higher among some immigrant groups than among American or European citizens.

    Both these statements are true. However, it is striking that most commentators recite only the first, and suggest that therefore Somalis, Rwandans, and El Salvadoreans are as harmless as our own citizens. They then respond to any objections by arguing that the only possible motivation of the objector must be racism.

    It is vital to point out the facts, again and again, until they are widely understood.

    I like you John. But when you go into immigration, you stop being funny and thoughtful. The Don is asking for a trade off. Build the wall hopefully just metaphorically, and declare a DACA amnesty. A pristine white suburban society in your region would be nice. But it is just possible, you would find it over dull and start missing the nicer Hispanics.

    Unfortunately, the new tax plan increases refundable tax credits for the Earned IncomeTax Credit and dependent childc and some type college tax handout. Being refundable means you get a check for money not withheld to pay taxes. This will be an incentive to attract the low income people who will overwhelm the unhappy tax payers who face the reality check of only being able to deduct $10,000 in SALT on the 1040. A remotely sane government would put Derb in charge of immigration policy. As it is, here's hoping on Generation Z; however, if we want to get back to where we once were, it ain't gonna be pretty.

    Merry Christmas Derb, and a healthy and prosperous New Year.

    A remotely sane government would put Derb in charge of immigration policy.

    No. We do not need an immigrant with an Asian immigrant wife in charge of immigration policy in the US. We need a natural born American whose ancestors were here before 1776. Derb is a swell guy, but he has to go back. He can pick England or China.

    Many voted for Trump, but how many illegals has he deported? I read the other day that the number of illegals being deported has dropped since Obama was president. I still don't see a Wall, I don't see E-Verify and I don't see the US bringing troops home. It's only been a year, but Trump is beginning to look like just another lying Republican. Well, at least he's moving our embassy to Jerusalem, that's the important thing.

Yeah, the media will cry about breaking families apart but the “they were brought here and had no choice” shtick won’t work with the parents. Let the media cry about the DACA parents who broke the law and forced the taxpayer to pay for their kids and see how the rest of America cars.

    On the latest numbers I can find, El Salvador ranks fourth in the world for intentional homicide. The rate is over 41 per hundred thousand.

    To give you some benchmarks, with that 41 in mind, here are current homicide rates for some U.S. cities, also per 100,000 inhabitants.....So El Salvador, not much of which is urban, is more than twice as homicidal as Detroit.

    It makes more sense to compare the murder rates between cities. The capital and largest city of El Salvador is San Salvador which is also it’s murder capital. It ranks #7 in the list of the world’s most murderous cities with a rate of 83.39 homicides per 100,000.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_by_murder_rate

    What’s remarkable about that list is that 94% of the top 50 most murderous cities in the world are located in the American continent, with the three exceptions being located in South Africa (also a europeanized christian region) which are ranked at #13, 43 and 50.

    What conclusions do you all draw from that?

    “…on the American continent.”

    Uh, not so fast. Almost all are in Mexico, Central or South America, 3 are in the United States: St. Louis, Detroit, and New Orleans. Hmm, I wonder what the common denominator be be?

    I like you John. But when you go into immigration, you stop being funny and thoughtful. The Don is asking for a trade off. Build the wall hopefully just metaphorically, and declare a DACA amnesty. A pristine white suburban society in your region would be nice. But it is just possible, you would find it over dull and start missing the nicer Hispanics.

    Yes, but a lot of the malaise in El Salvador, and Central America in general, derives from US policies. Our war on drugs creates a money machine for thugs from Mexico to Peru, including Maras Salvatruchas. In addition, the gang’s origins are rooted in Los Angeles, where children of refugees from the civil war of the late 1970s-early 1980s assimilated to underclass youth culture. Those arrested for crimes in LA were deported back to El Salvador, and created a particularly vicious synthesis of death-squad callousness with US gangbanger style.

    Bayesian estimation training should start in grade school.

  47. John D – let me offer you safe quiet free accommodation in central Melbourne (closer to beggar territory than thuggery if one must find and observe street crime) for as long as you like to assess and prescribe for the problem you will find by Googling “black gangs in Melbourne Australia”.

    Obviously the missed answer was to establish a Truth and Reconciliation Commission in which Catholic bishops and priests could earn remission of their many sins of sexual predation by taking birth control to Africans -double remission for used condoms which had left African women free of HIV as well as children. But I fantasise and suggest too that I suffer from hopeless pessimism.

    In fact the reality check I seek is on my optimism that the few score young males from South Sudan and surrounds serve as a blessing by way of a warning to Australia and insulation against doing anything as foolish again as allowing as immigrants, primitives, even as refugees. With Rosie’s assistance you might also form a realistic view of my optimism when it extends to increasing Chinese (and maybe Indian) influence in Australia helping to prevent expensive foolishness in immigration policies.

    I also wonder whether you would see reason for Australia to follow your prescription for the US of virtually no immigration at all. AND…. is there any basis fir arguing that Australia’s Asian immigrants will do what Jews are accused (quite frequently on UR threads) and try to bugger up European-elites-governed countries by swamping them with disparate groups of undesirable immigrants. So far I don’t know of any Indo-Chinese Students Association for Promoting African Immigration.

Being refundable means you get a check for money not withheld to pay taxes. This will be an incentive to attract the low income people who will overwhelm the unhappy tax payers who face the reality check of only being able to deduct $10,000 in SALT on the 1040. Andtew Cuomo never loses.

    Wealth inequality is at robber baron (and pre-Great Depression) levels. 1/10th of 1% of Americans have wealth equal to the least wealthy 90%. That includes the majority of the middle class. Yet some of us are still blaming the poor! Well, the poor did not create neoliberalism, neoconservatism, the FED,
    insane “defense” spending, a Pentagon that has not been audited (supposedly coming in 2018), perpetual warfare, or the “Please Buy Me, I’m Cheap” ” Congress.

    Why not try an immigration policy that’s never been tried before, at least not explicitly. I contend that crime, bad manners, and anti social behavior are largely correlated with intelligence. An intelligent engineer from El Salvador, India, Iran, etc isn’t likely to be stupid enough to cause trouble, for example.

    Set the criteria for immigration strictly on IQ. All persons wanting to emigrate to the US must pass an IQ test written in English. Those and only those that meet a certain level are allowed in. Spouses, children, other relatives are not allowed in unless they can pass the intelligence test. Such a policy that is blind to ethnicity, religion, etc would be difficult to rail against by the progressives.

    The H-1B visa program already does this in a left handed manner.

    If only intelligent people were allowed to legally enter the US, over a period of years it would raise the IQ level of the country while simultaneously reducing the number of trouble makers.

    I knew someone would bring up the idea that H-1B depresses the wages of Americans. That may or may not be true, but is of no consequence to the main thrust of my immigration suggestion which is to keep out the people most likely to cause problems related to welfare costs and crime.

    Given the miserable state of US education, and the fact that the vast majority of people graduating with degrees are NOT STEM qualified, where is the tech sector supposed to get the talent to produce the wizardry those with useless gender study, philosophy, art history, economics, etc degrees expect? The plain truth is that the average USian is innumerate and many near illiterate graduating from high schools. Ask the average college bound individual what their goals are and it's to be a banker, stock broker, lawyer, etc, not an engineer or scientist.

    The H-1B program provides quite a bit of the talent the tech sector depends on. Take that away and the US will slide further down the path to 3rd world status, which, as far as I can see, is inevitable.

    Explain to me a thought process whereby any talented and intelligent young American will, or should, decide to pay for an extremely expensive education process to gain STEM qualifications, when that young American is very much aware that any less qualified African, Indian or other Asiatic H1B import will be given priority (punitively disproportionate priority) by any corporation hiring STEM candidates.

    First, explain to me why an employer, in a competitive environment, would hire a "less qualified" individual. Your premise is unsound.

    Look at the actual real world skill levels in STEM available in the US. They are pathetic. Therefore, any corporation situated in the US that wants to hire someone for a US position will hire the best talent they can find. I don't doubt that they can hire foreigners at a lower salary, at least initially. That small difference is a rounding error on their balance sheet.

    The snowflakes coming out of supposed higher education aren't interested in STEM, so people with a STEM background must be found and imported. Logical.

    If a corporation can't fill STEM positions within the US, the jobs go overseas, where salaries are even lower. The US's options are to either grow the necessary STEM graduates locally, or import them. There is no alternative, and growing them has shown to be near impossible.

    Not exactly. H1Bs having expertise equivalent to American STEM graduates of equal expertise are substantially less expensive to hire. Don't get to thinking that industry needs more than a very few genius-level innovators. They don't. They need competent engineers. Competent foreigners are much more cost-effective than competent Americans.

    The rest of your statement is just opinion with nothing to back it up. I, at least, provide some rationale for my position.

    Regardless – you and the other person that replied are concentrating on a minor point of my original post, completely ignoring my main emphasis. All I was trying to do was to say that the H-1B visa program already restricts immigration to some extent by offering it only to qualified individuals. My post wasn’t in favor of the H-1B visa program. It was in favor of restricting immigration ONLY to intelligent people that can pass an IQ test so that the progressives couldn’t yell discrimination based on sex, religion, ethnicity, etc. They’d look like fools if they tried to claim discrimination against stupid people.

    Let’s assume this is your “query”, since you make no other request:

    First, explain to me why an employer, in a competitive environment, would hire a “less qualified” individual. Your premise is unsound.

    Review my post, and point out to me where I said an employer should hire a “less-qualified” individual.

    I did not.

    You demonstrate a focus on your own assertions, and a distinct lack of any intention to see things any other way.

    Beyond that issue, there is absolutely no justification whatsoever for any H1B visa program. Nor is there any substantive justification for any form of immigration. There is absolutely no necessity for taking in any foreigners at all.

    The hysteria on the Left would imply that Trump really is having a positive impact on immigration, even if he has sold out to Goldman Sachs on most other issues.

    Then again, it is in the Left’s interest to keep their base riled up, so who knows?

    From 2,350 years ago in ancient Greece ... a critique of immigration by no less than the famous Aristotle (c. 384-322 BCE) ... Aristotle saying that often, either you expel the immigrants, or they take over and maybe even expel you ... From Book 5 of Aristotle's 'Politics', 1303a-b:

    Difference of race is a cause of faction, for just as any chance multitude of people does not form a state, so a state is not formed in any chance period of time.

    Hence most of the states that have hitherto admitted joint settlers or additional settlers have split into factions; for example Achaeans settled at Sybaris jointly with Troezenians, and afterwards the Achaeans having become more numerous expelled the Troezenians, which was the Cause of the curse that fell on the Sybarites;

    And at Thurii Sybarites quarrelled with those who had settled there with them, for they claimed to have the larger share in the country as being their own, and were ejected;

    And at Byzantium the additional settlers were discovered plotting against the colonists and were expelled by force of arms;

    And the people of Antissa after admitting the Chian exiles expelled them by arms;

    And the people of Zancle after admitting settlers from Samos were themselves expelled;

    And the people of Apollonia on the Euxine Sea after bringing in additional settlers fell into faction;

    And the Syracusans, conferred citizenship on their foreign troops and mercenaries and then faction set in and they came to battle; and the Amphipolitans having received settlers from Chalcis were most of them driven out by them.

    Here's Aristotle on the habit of oppressive elites to prefer that their operational mafias be some kind of foreign tribe or aliens or 'dual citizens', in 1311a, 1314a:

    A king's body-guard consists of citizens, a tyrant's of foreign mercenaries ... And it is a mark of a tyrant to have men of foreign extraction rather than citizens as guests at table and companions ... feeling that citizens are hostile but strangers make no claim against him.

    A few more applicable-to-today phrases from the Greek sage, in 1313b-1314a:

    It is a device of tyranny to make the subjects poor, so that the people being busy with their daily affairs may not have leisure to plot against their ruler ... Tyranny is a friend of the base [i.e., low-quality people]; the base are useful for base business, for nail is driven out by nail, as the proverb goes.

    And it is a mark of a tyrant to dislike anyone that is proud or free-spirited; for the man who shows a free spirit robs tyranny of its superiority and position of mastery.

    Above texts from Aristotle's 'Politics', are taken from the 1944 Harvard translation by H. Rackham, text on the Perseus site. But since Aristotle and his translator were both Euro-heritage white guys ...

    Outstanding comment. I haven’t heard these quotes before. Thanks.

    They drive wages down and that’s crime enough.

    Always true.

    as the Third World is historically incapable of intellectual innovation.

    I disagree, there has been some technological innovations in the third world but at a VERY LOW frequency than the White or even East Asian world. But technological innovation is not the only reason why brown blacks should not allowed in large or even medium numbers into the third world including education ones. Third worlders always screw up First world societies in a number of ways and it is to a good extent genetic. There are no first world countries and third world countries, just first world peoples and third world peoples.

    I agree. When the white First World invites in the brown or black Third World, the First World always loses as the Third World is historically incapable of intellectual innovation.
