I’ve had Birmingham on my mind recently, as a conjunction of the political and the personal.

No, this is not Birmingham, Alabama I’ve been pondering: not the Birmingham from whose jail Martin Luther King—I beg your pardon:The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.—wrote a famous letter in 1963, and whose subsequent decline has been chronicled in a VDARE.com article and a book by our own correspondent Paul Kersey

No, the Birmingham on my mind is the English Birmingham, a big old industrial city in the West Midlands.

(The central trunk of England is, in the imagination of the English, divided into North, Midlands, and South. The West Midlands stretches from the Welsh border eastwards to Rugby. East of that is of course the East Midlands, where I was born and raised. East of that is East Anglia, a flat, damp, and dreary region best known for Puritans, opium addiction, and singing mailmen.)

So what’s been going on in Birmingham? First the political.

On January 10th, the Saturday following the Charlie Hebdo massacre, terrorism expert and author Steve Emerson was on the Fox News program Justice with Judge Jeanine. Discussing the situation of Muslims in Europe, Emerson said the following thing:

In Britain, it’s not just no-go zones. There are actual cities like Birmingham that are totally Muslim, where non-Muslims just simply don’t go in.

That was an unfortunately absurd thing to say. In the 2011 national census 22 percent of Birmingham’s inhabitants identified as Muslim, 46 percent as Christian, 32 percent as other religions or none.

Birmingham is Britain’s second most populous city at 1.1 million. The municipal boundaries encompass 103 square miles, putting Birmingham midway in size between Sacramento and Salt Lake City—but in, of course, a much smaller country. For non-Muslims to be excluded from a place that size would be astounding.

The worst of it, from a VDARE.com point of view, was that Emerson’s clumsy remark was a gift to the multiculturalists, transnationalists, and Muslim supremacists, who were soon hooting and shrieking all over the internet.

A journalist at the far-left Guardian newspaper started the Twitter hashtag #FoxNewsFacts, and the twittosphere quickly filled up with mockery, not much of it very funny.

Fox and Emerson issued separate apologies, and Emerson made a £500 ($750) donation to Birmingham Children’s Hospital.[ Fox News ‘terror expert’: Listening back to my comments on Birmingham is like ‘waterboarding’ By Leon Siciliano, Telegraph (UK), January 15, 2015]

Next up was Louisiana Governor and GOP Great Brown Hope Bobby Jindal. Addressing the neocon think tank Henry Jackson Society on a visit to London, Jindal offered a milder version of Emerson’s remarks about no-go areas in Europe:

In a speech prepared for delivery at a British think tank, Jindal said some immigrants are seeking “to colonize Western countries, because setting up your own enclave and demanding recognition of a no-go zone are exactly that.” [Jindal: Muslims form ‘no-go zones’ outside civic control, by Philip Elliott; Associated Press, January 19, 2015]

Asked about these reported remarks (the Henry Jackson Society speech was not televised) by CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Jindal showed some spine:

“Look, you had a police chief here in London today say to the Daily Mail there are neighborhoods—I’m not talking about entire cities, as others have tried to suggest. I’m saying there are neighborhoods where the police say they don’t go as frequently. There are neighborhoods where women do not feel comfortable walking without veils.” CNN’s Max Foster, too, asked Jindal to specify the “area, so we can look at it, because I haven’t heard of one.” Jindal responded, “I think your viewers know absolutely there are places where the police are less likely to go, they absolutely know there are neighborhoods where they wouldn’t feel comfortable.”

[Bobby Jindal remarks: Does two-year-old CNN report prove existence of ‘no-go zones’? by Eric Wemple; Washington Post, January 20, 2015]

These two little episodes generated much comment and analysis, of quality both high and low, on the whole subject of no-go-areas and local enforcement of shariah law in European cities.

As best I can judge after a couple of hours reading through this material, the stories about no-go zones are somewhat overblown. The famous French government list of Zones urbaines sensibles (sensitive urban neighborhoods), for example, marks these neighborhoods as prioritized for slum clearance. No doubt they are bad areas with a lot of crime and vandalism, and predominantly African and/or Muslim; but I can’t find any evidence that police stay out of them.

The police chief mentioned by Governor Jindal was not describing no-go areas so much as never-called-to areas:

There are cities in the Midlands where the police never go because they are never called. They never hear of any trouble because the community deals with that on its own … It’s not that the police are afraid to go into these areas or don’t want to go into those areas,’ he said. ‘But if the police don’t get calls for help then, of course, they won’t know what’s going on.

[Murders and rapes going unreported in no-go zones for police as minority communities launch own justice systems, by Sara Smyth; Daily Mail, January 17, 2015.]

Deplorable enough, but not unknown in the British slums long before mass Muslim immigration. [Where ‘Say Nothing’ Is Gospel, I.R.A. Victim’s Daughter Is Talking, By Katrin Bennhold, NYT, May 21, 2014] The chief also told the Daily Mail that attempts to enforce shariah law don’t go unpunished:

Last December, three members of a self-styled ‘Muslim Patrol’ vigilante group were jailed for harassing, intimidating and assaulting people in East London while claiming they were enforcing sharia law.

And plainly the police had gone into the area to make those arrests.

Prof. Daniel Pipes, who believes he coined the phrase “no-go zones” in this context in 2006, has since backed away from it.

Pipes now says he was mistaken. In 2013, after traveling to several listed Paris neighborhoods and mainly immigrant and Muslim areas of five other European cities, he wrote: “For a visiting American, these areas are very mild, even dull. We who know the Bronx and Detroit expect urban hell in Europe, too, but there things look fine … hardly beautiful, but buildings are intact, greenery abounds, and order prevails … Having this first-hand experience, I regret having called these areas no-go zones,” he wrote.

[Debunking the Myth of Muslim-Only Zones in Major European Cities, by Carol Matlack; BloombergBusinessweek, January 14, 2015]

But more recently, however, Pipes has tacked back a little:

Instead of no-go zones, I propose semi-autonomous sectors, a term that emphasizes their indistinct and non-geographic nature – thus permitting a more accurate discussion of what is, arguably, West Europe’s most acute problem.

[Does Europe Have No-go Zones? by Daniel Pipes; Middle East Forum, January 20, 2015]

Pipes is a Conservatism, Inc. stalwart, but I know what he means.

At any rate, I know Birmingham. Here we get to the personal.

On January 3rd my Uncle Fred died aged 92, at his home in Birmingham. It was a particularly sad death for the family.

ORDER IT NOW

Fred was the husband of Muriel, my mother’s youngest sister. Mother and Muriel were at the tail end of a big old West Midlands working-class family: 13½ kids, of whom 11½ survived to adulthood. The half was “Uncle” Jerry, illegitimate child—a “bye-blow” in the local dialect—of Aunt Sally, raised with the rest as a brother.

Muriel died in 2013, last of the siblings by blood; Fred was the last by marriage.

And by blood too, actually. As well as being my uncle, Fred was also my second cousin. His mother was another bye-blow, the illegitimate child of Great-Aunt Leah, my grandmother’s sister. (Take what you read about Victorian morality with a pinch of salt.)

Muriel and Fred were thus first cousins once removed. Probably for that reason, they had no children; and because of that, and having kindly natures, they were available for child-minding duties as required. During my childhood in the 1950s I was often parked with them at their house in the Aston district of Birmingham, 55 miles west of my own home in Northampton.

Sixty years ago, when I got acquainted with the area, Birmingham was entirely white English, as was Northampton. Aston was respectable working-class: the men employed at nearby factories (automobiles, electrical equipment), the women mostly at home.

I roamed around quite freely, as kids did in those days. There was a store on the corner of Prestbury Road and Whitehead Road where I used to buy candy. It was run by a man named Smith, I think. It was there that I last spent a farthing—the coin ceased to be legal tender in 1961.

That store is now the Bangla Bazar, and the whole area is subcontinental Muslim: Pakistani and Bangladeshi.

Bangla Bazar

There is a mosque on the next block. Whether its theology is jihadist or not, I don’t know.

Ettington Road Mosque

This transformation has been swift and dramatic. Concerning the present-day demographics of Aston, Wikipedia has this to say:

The largest ethnic group [in the 2001 census] was Asian at 49.8 percent. More specifically, the Pakistani ethnic group was the largest at 27.2 percent. White British was the second largest ethnic group at 26.00 percent and Black British was third with 21.51 percent … Islam was the most prominent religion in the ward with 44.3 percent of the ward’s population stating themselves as Muslim. Christianity was the second most prominent religion in Aston at 32.4 percent.

The ethnic make-up of the area drastically changed in the 1950s and 1960s with immigration from the Commonwealth. Most of the immigrants were from the Indian subcontinent, though a significant number were from the Caribbean.

Remember, this is an area that had seen no significant immigration for more than a thousand years.

As the above clips from Google Street View show, the area is neatly kept and well stocked with late-model automobiles. Aston is not a rancid slum. (The nearby Lozells district is worse, with a high black-Caribbean population, much crime, and recurrent race riots: 1981,1985, 1991, 2005.)

As Street View also shows, though, the new inhabitants of Aston are in no hurry to assimilate, after sixty years.

no hurry to assimilate,

Muriel and Fred never moved as the neighborhood transformed itself around them. They spoke well of their Muslim neighbors; although as old people, it was the older ones they knew, the glad-to-be-here first generation of immigrants. Of the subsequent, absimilation-prone generations—now exporting fighters to ISIS in Syria—they did not know much.

Thinking back over those years, and reading about them in David Kynaston’s magisterial histories of post-WW2 Britain, it seems as though the nation was hell-bent on destroying itself.

The destruction was actually physical. The open-air market at the center of Birmingham, the Bull Ring, was swept away in the late 1950s, replaced by a more traffic-friendly (and, of course, developer-friendly, but much less shopper-friendly) mass of malls, escalators, and underpasses. This development proved so unpopular at last, the Bull Ring was re-redeveloped in the late 1990s with a more human dimension.

It was the same all over the city. The splendid municipal library on the Birchfield Road in Aston, where I became addicted to science fiction, has gone in the name of some road-widening scheme. I can’t see the necessity, though I suppose some contractor made a lot of money.

Along with the physical destruction and the population replacement, there was cultural vandalism, too.

I am ashamed to say I participated in that. One of my first assignments as a computer programmer in London was to assist in the conversion from the old pounds, shillings, and pence (and halfpence, though no longer farthings) to decimal currency in 1970.

The change was not necessary. The mainframe computers of the time could cope perfectly well with the traditional currency. The only trap for programmers was zero suppression suppression on the shillings, but you soon got the knack of it.

(Zero suppression is the removal of leading zeros, so that “00021” becomes “21.” Pounds could be suppressed all the way down to nothing, zero pounds five shillings and sixpence printing as “5s. 6d.” Pennies likewise, four pounds five shillings and zero pence printing as “£4 5s.” Shillings, however, always had to show, four pounds zero shillings and sixpence printing as “£4 0s. 6d.” For shillings, you suppressed zero suppression. Sorry, you never forget this stuff.)

Britain was from the late 1950s on seized with a kind of passion to sweep away the national identity: the fine old buildings, the currency, the citizens themselves. Everything had to be replaced.

Why? I wish I could understand.

Fox talking head Steve Emerson was wrong on the absolute level that the transformation of Britain has reached, give or take London’s Muslim Patrol vigilantes.

But he was right on the trend. And where will it end?

    > Why? I wish I could understand.

    There’s this triple-whammy effect:

    1. Modern times: everything changes with electricity, cars, phones, TV, Internet.

    2. Decline: demographic, civic morality, local culture, etc.

    3. Population replacement: massive immigration of very different, growing populations.

I’m tempted to say that 1 leads to 2 and both lead to 3, but no doubt there’s more to be said.

  2. Hepp says:

I’ve always wondered, if the Muslim slums in Europe are supposedly so violent, why does the European murder rate remain so low even when countries have become 5-10% Muslim? Countries in Europe with a lot of Muslims are no more violent than those with few. It’s nothing compared to US inner cities.

  3. Seems reasonable. There aren’t really literal ‘no go’ zones in Europe by American standards – there are parts of many American cities far more dangerous to white outsiders than anything you’d see here in the UK. But there are huge areas of Britain resembling south Asia, completely separate from white-British life. They are generally not particularly dangerous, but they are certainly alien.

taken literally “no-go” is too strong a phrase but it is effectively true.

the base line is poor areas are always no-go in that local street gangs make them dangerous for male teenagers and young men who are not from that area and for young females generally.

unless they are visibly very prosperous people outside those demographics are less effected by this.

however blue collar immigration adds another layer to that

these areas became “no-stay” areas for the same demographics i.e. young males and females, from the (White) minority. nb “minority” here means minority of the young as the violence is mostly youth violence. so when the population of those areas flipped to immigrant majority among the young the standard logic of poor areas “you’re not from this area” switched to “you don’t belong here” so the younger part of the White population and parents with young children left, leaving the older people behind. As those older people die off the area becomes 100% immigrant.

this “no-stay” process has happened with all blue collar immigrant areas not just Muslim ones.

then there is a third layer which is unique to Muslim immigrants:

    1) harassment of females for not wearing Islamic dress – groups of males will sometimes congregate and follow a woman not wearing a veil, spitting on them, calling them whores and saying they should be raped etc. this is mostly done to control their own women imo by chasing away what they see as bad examples and i assume they would do this to Muslim girls too although i haven’t come across it (possibly because Muslim girls in those areas now would be too scared to try).

    2) specifically jihadist activity including things like anti-alcohol patrols

so it’s less no-go and more no-stay and filtered much more at the young than the old but otherwise mostly true if not literally true.

    .

The police chief mentioned by Governor Jindal was not describing no-go areas so much as never-called-to areas:

    He’s lying.

The police have been operating “sensitive policing” in immigrant areas since the 1980s because they can’t police those areas and sensitive policing is a euphemism for ignoring as much crime in those areas as possible.

It’s not that they don’t go into those areas because they will be attacked – although that is partly why in some places. They don’t go because they can’t arrest people in the proportions they are committing crime because that would lead to too many of the wrong kind of prisoner and they’d be accused of racial discrimination.

(It’s still like that anyway even with the police bending over backwards to arrest as few as possible but nowhere near as much as it could be.)

In reality the bulk of the disproportion is related to age and gender – immigrants are a much higher proportion of young males than they are of the total population, especially in the cities – but the MSM deliberately confuse those percentages to attack the police so the police gave up and stopped policing.

Besides the inbred cousin marriage of the native Brits, mentioned by Derb, there is also the white trash non-marriage problem, and the crazy Chinese problem I get why he and vdare Brimelow jumped borders to get to the US. But I’d feel better if they hadn’t jumped here via News Corp’s Murdoch .

By contrast, those concerned with professional development experienced conflict as a result of a high perceived need for integration and a recognition of the problems associated with this.

Emerson is a clown, along with his colleagues Geller and Robert B. Spencer, funded by the Horowitz foundation. Derb has more class with his anglo maths, in America anyway. I don’t get how he messed up his gig with national Review and Crown Publishing. They also publish Horowitz, Barone, Greg Gutfeld, Alan West, Charles Krauthammer, and Israeli Glick – the neocon host of heaven .

  9. OsRazor says:

“We who know the Bronx and Detroit expect urban hell in Europe, too, but there things look fine … hardly beautiful, but buildings are intact, greenery abounds, and order prevails … ”

That’s it. Nothing more need be said really in terms of the threats posed to society by Europe’s Muslims and our NAM. It’s just a whole different magnitude of problem. This also explains why Europe has nothing like our urban militarized police forces (the recent raids in Europe against suspected terrorist cells were actually conducted by military special forces) and why our prison rates are off the charts compared to Europe. For sheer misery and day-to-day horror nothing compares to American inner cities in the developed world. Nothing. You really are stepping into a third-world environment and you would be mad to go into that world without a trusted guide or armed protection. There are dozens and dozens of stories of Whites who have been murdered and raped, literally butchered, who’ve accidentally stumbled into a black area.

“These so called experts, and Emerson is a prime example, have one prime directive, and that is when given the choice always choose hyperbole over measured speech. . . . I don’t know how these guys make a living but I could hazard a guess where the money comes from.”

Well, that’s the key, isn’t it? Why we hear the incessant drop beat from that quarter urging more war, more intervention and more shutting of our eyes against the real threats to Whites in the US.

    “1 word: Rotherham!”

We have Rotherhams every day in the US. Each time you see some stupid White girl (or her parents or grandparents) trudging along with some little mulatto thing you’re seeing Rotherham before your eyes. Multiply that by thousands. Every single day in the US, some little White girl is being used by some non-White, breeded and tossed to the side.

  10. @Simon in London

I recall once reading a research paper about race relations among White British, Black, and South Asian youth. The author found that friendships and sexual relations were fairly common between whites and blacks, but South Asians tended to keep their distance from both groups and, occasionally, had physical altercations with these other groups.

According to another source, Black British have considerably higher arrest rates than White British. Approximately, 3x the rate. South Asians and Whites have identical arrests rates.

When it comes to school suspensions, Black-Carribbean British and mixed-black/white are suspended at significantly higher rate than whites. Black Africans are suspended at a similar rate. Pakistanis and Bangladeshis at a lower rate. Indians at an especially low rate. As for Chinese, suspensions are almost zero.

  11. Matra says:

Emerson is the guy who dominated American TV coverage for 24 hours after the OKC bombing in the 90s. He had some very quotable lines ready to go about OKC being the American hot-bed of Arab terrorist fundraising. I see he has learned nothing. Maybe he just doesn’t care as it’s a living for him. Unfortunately, these kinds of mistakes are used very effectively by the left to reinforce the image of conservatives being stupid, ignorant, and mendacious.

  12. anon • Disclaimer says:

    1) Most inter-ethnic violence is youth violence. The perpetrators are mostly 16-24 and the victims mostly 11-18.

    2) People mostly go to jail for the sort of crimes young blue collar males commit.

    3) An ethnic group can be 5% of the population of a country and 30% of the young blue collar males in a particular city or district.

    4) Arrest and prison etc stats need to be based on the percentage of young blue collar males within the area in question.

    5) The media consistently distort the debate through ignoring this obvious point.

    6) The way the police try to get out of this Catch 22 situation is by ignoring crime in certain areas as much as possible so if a particular group is 5% of the national population but 30% of the young blue collar males in a particular city then their the arrest rate might be 10% or 15% of the total instead of the 30% it ought to be – hence the descent into gang cultures.

Depends where they’re from and what the age/gender distribution is as it’s the proportions of young men multiplied by how aggressive they are relative to the natives.

On an individual basis and on average Pakistanis are probably a notch or two less aggressive than the natives plus the people who immigrated to Britain from Pakistan included a lot of families so the displacement percentage was a lot higher than West Indian Christians whose first wave were almost all young male and who are a notch or two more aggressive than the natives (although I guess the level of aggression may relate to the gender distribution also).

On the third hand Somali Muslims on average are a notch more aggressive than West Indians and in a lot of places they are initially mostly young male refugees as well.

    So there’d be a range.

Taking your two data points I’d guess at something like 20% for Somalis up to 50% for Pakistanis modified by the proportion of families to young males.

Also as most inter ethnic violence is youth violence over access to females the displacement is often only the younger half of the original population (which helps disguise what is happening). The older half often remains until they pass away.

Don’t miss the ad placed by the city council to discourage displaced Indians from Uganda to settle in the borough, reproduced in the above wiki article. Apparently, it backfired, as the city is now over 34 % “Asian”.
Sometimes, personal impressions are misleading. While visiting Birmingham’s city centre over 20 years ago, I was struck by the large number of Caribbeans around, much greater than in Manchester at the time.
Similarly, American tourists who only visit London or Paris must believe Europe is already 50% Muslim and that Eurabia is just around the corner. Big cities are where immigrants flock to and create ghettos after their own taste. Mid- sized cities are still largely native European even in England ( not counting the Greater London area) and France ( not counting Île de France).

I don’t remember Emerson being on TV after OKC…that was Neil Livingstone. And he was correct. The Clinton’s completely disregarded the Muslim connection between the bombing and Timothy McViegh (you can read about it in “And Others Unknown” the book of that title written by McViegh’s attorney)…It was politically expedient to blame a couple of disgruntled white boys rather than the complicated mess of going after all involved. Clinton’s mishandling of OKC, along with the African bombings and the Cole and the first attack on the WTC and a dozen other missteps and missed opportunities led directly to 9-11 and the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Emerson was wrong to use such hyperbole, he should have learned long ago to measure his speech in light of the 150 million people in the world who want him neutralized and hang on every nuance in every sentence. Only this time, there was no nuance. He simply laid his you-know-what out on the table and begged ’em to cut it off. The gist of what he said is true, whether an area is “no-go”, “sensitively policed” or “semi-autonomous” is really a game of semantics, for now, since “semi-autonomous” today means “no-go” a few years from now. Just remember next time, Steve, that a war of words is still a war.

At least the Brits, as Derbyshire noted, had sense to avoid reproducing in those instances. In earlier times too there were midwives for the cases where reproduction occurred and a monster came out.

It’s pretty high % in London – when my area was threatening to Islamify, I would have looked to move out at around 40% Muslim (area ended up ‘gentrifying’ instead). Probably around 30% black sees white flight, mostly due to crime. So similar numbers to the US Islam-Mexican and black-black, but Muslims have alien religion and UK blacks mostly don’t have guns.

  24. Matra says:

I remember both. Emerson was more likely to be on the lower church programmes like Inside Edition whereas Livingstone got on the more serious ones.

I don’t watch cable news anymore so I could be wrong but Livingstone seems to have disappeared from media. Maybe he’s retired.

Similarly, American tourists who only visit London or Paris must believe Europe is already 50% Muslim and that Eurabia is just around the corner

London, yes. But other than the RER train ride from the airport the typical tourist visiting the Louvre and Latin Quarter won’t get that impression in Paris.

You’re right. Cousin marriage among White Brits is rare. Among Pakistanis in Britain it’s pretty common – I’ve seen estimates for first-cousin marriages range from 37% to just over 50%. Bangladeshi rates have been reported at around 20-25%.

This BBC article from 2013 has some more information from Bradford, an ex-industrial city in the north of England with a large Pakistani population:
