Even in the diversity industry, white males keep bobbing to the top.

For example, at MIT, the top name listed on its Diversity Equity Inclusion website as the Head Caucasian in Charge Institute Community and Equity Officer is physicist Edmund Bertschinger.

INTUITIVELY OBVIOUS: Our white privilege

Understanding privilege will help us combat inequality in our community

By Edmund Bertschinger and Ruth Perry

December 9, 2014

… Black Americans live in a parallel universe to the one we, a white woman and a white man, live in. This parallel universe is a murderous regime, in which black people are killed with impunity; there is apparently no accountability for white men who wear police uniforms. …

Oops, not part of Bertschinger’s oped.

The first thing both of us thought of when Michael Brown was slain was the vulnerability of young African Americans. …

We white people cannot continue to live in our insulated safe parallel universe unconscious of this brutality and lawlessness without trying to stop it.

… Does no one care about what is lawful and what is not anymore? It is bad enough that the wealthy get away without paying their share of taxes and that armed white Texans can face down federal law enforcement officers with seeming impunity. …

Edmund Bertschinger is a Professor of Physics and Institute Community and Equity Officer, and Ruth Perry is Ann Fetter Friedlaender Professor of the Humanities

Not to be outdone, Google’s diversity efforts are headed by former U-boat captain TV actor Laszlo Bock.

P.S. A reader points out that Professor Bertschinger appears to commute to MIT from a town that’s only about 3% black or Hispanic and his son graduated from a public high school less than 5% Non-Asian Minority, an unusually low figure in this decade in a major metropolitan area. The Bertschinger family’s level of white privilege doesn’t come cheap, usually.

  3. I’m sorry, but that article by the head of the Physics Department and the Professor from the English Department at MIT is just awash with lulz. A few quotes:

The first thing both of us thought of when Michael Brown was slain was the vulnerability of young African Americans. One of us thought of a friend’s young black son.

The other of us thought first of black students at MIT, brilliant young people, many of whom look like Michael Brown or Trayvon Martin

We call on readers to examine their own feelings and attitudes about race and privilege, to share insights with others, and consider ways to use your MIT privilege — which all of us here have — to aid others. Janee Woods offered great advice in her article “Becoming a White Ally to Black People in the Aftermath of the Michael Brown Murder.”

The first thing he should have thought of was, "Oh, sad, a kid died."

The second thing he should have thought of was, "A white kid or an Asian kid or Hispanic kid asked by a policeman to move out of the middle of the street where he was holding up traffic would have done so."

The third thing he should have thought of was, "A white kid or Asian kid or Hispanic kid wouldn't have thrown his fat azz body into the cop car and tried to take the cop's firearm and tried to shoot him."

The fourth thing he should have thought of was, "Dumb kid, likely high as a kite."

The fifth thing he should have thought of was, "Black neighborhood where this all went down--gonna be a lot of lying about what happened and the black grievance industry heads will be there in a few minutes."

Last thing: " Glad it was the kid and not the cop who died."

It seems that female MMA fighter Ronda Rousey is being attacked for not wanting to get in the ring with a Transwoman (AKA, a man):

Fallon Fox is a women’s featherweight MMA fighter with a 5-1 record. The first openly transgender athlete in MMA history, she has been the target of vitriol from many prominent MMA figures, including the UFC’s president Dana White and women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey. Both White and Rousey have publicly insisted that Fox will never fight in the UFC women’s division. White has said, “I’ll leave it up to the athletic commissions, and the doctors and scientists,” to decide which gender divisions transgender athletes should compete in, but also declared, “I don’t think that somebody who used to be a man and became a woman should be able to fight another woman.” Rousey has said of Fox, “She can try hormones, chop her pecker off, but it’s still the same bone structure a man has. It’s an advantage. I don’t think it’s fair.”

If Fox stops taking hormones Fox will likely increase his bodies muscle to fat ratio back to that of a man. Women have about twice the percentage of body fat as a man. There is no way that can ever be made fair.
    , @Jason Roberts
I don't know if this was mentioned in the Armenian thread, but many of Rousey's coaches are -yan Armenians.
    , @Gunnar von Cowtown
Yeah, off topic, but I feel compelled to comment none the less. I used to be a casual UFC fan about seven years ago and my interest pretty much peaked with Brock Lesnar's brief reign as heavyweight champ. Since then, it seems like Dana White bet the ranch on women fighters, and the ever-leftifying sports media have doubled down. The only time I hear anyone (ESPN, local sports radio, random dude bros) talking UFC, it's all Rousey all the time. This has completely alienated me as a casual fan. The only thing I care less about than women fighters is Project Runway. That said, I'm only one data point.

Is this strategy working out well for UFC? Are more people ordering up pay per view? Or is it all an attempt to halt the decline? Is it a last ditch attempt to generate hype/relevance?

I learned in high school that parallel lines never meet. I am sure the same principle applies to parallel universes. The reason that the professor has never had Henry Louis Gates over to dinner is because the professor is at MIT and Gates is at Harvard. It has nothing to do with the fact that Gates is black.

The Folly of Fools: The Logic of Deceit and Self-Deception in Human Life
    by Robert Trivers

Whether it’s in a cockpit at takeoff or the planning of an offensive war, a romantic relationship or a dispute at the office, there are many opportunities to lie and self-deceive—but deceit and self-deception carry the costs of being alienated from reality and can lead to disaster. So why does deception play such a prominent role in our everyday lives? In short, why do we deceive?
In his bold new work, prominent biological theorist Robert Trivers unflinchingly argues that self-deception evolved in the service of deceit—the better to fool others. We do it for biological reasons—in order to help us survive and procreate. From viruses mimicking host behavior to humans misremembering (sometimes intentionally) the details of a quarrel, science has proven that the deceptive one can always outwit the masses. But we undertake this deception at our own peril.

  11. Social Justice Bullies can destroy Edmund’s career in 30 seconds flat, should he make the slightest slip on that slope. He’s old enough to know better than to believe any of the stuff he is parroting – and has had some life experience, even if it’s been in the ivory tower. Maybe even especially because of having entered the ivory tower in an era when meritocracy mattered and everyone knew it. He is probably from the bottom of the barrel and was also a weak-kneed go-along to get-along sort that populated the university in small numbers before affirmative action came along and buoyed his kind’s prospects. He is merely grateful.

Yes, if the Left fosters freedom for aggression (and it does!), it's fair to characterize it as a movement of misanthropy.

Speaking of movement, as I have explained, the Right is the party of order, and the Left is the party of movement. The "movement" may be viewed as aggression or, as Ted Sallis has pointed out, entropy.

Entropy taken to its extreme, means the end of all life. Living things are called "organisms", after all.

  20. That was enraging, ugh. Meanwhile there’s an interesting discussion between SJWs and other students if you follow the link to ‘I saw you at MIT’

    http://isawyou.mit.edu/post.php?id=10667

Here’s part of one of many angry responses to a pretty good takedown of SJW philosophy (comment #7), in this case defending black violence because the people “cannot express themselves in an eloquent way”:

“african-american communities tend to be undereducated and insecure. combine those two together and you get a group of people that has MUCH difficulty expressing their feelings in an eloquent way. blacks are well aware of their lower position on the societal totem, and those who don’t have the means or insight to do something about it in a constructive way have no choice but to channel their pent-up frustration through violence. if you can’t see any truth in this statement, please do not bother reading on.

the saddest thing is that (supposedly) educated beings like poster 7 and many others born into higher social standing expect the african-american community to mount a coherent, nonviolent response before deeming them worthy of attention. “if there is another MLKjr, of course we’ll listen!” you say enthusiastically. do you see how foolish this sounds? instead of asking the deeper “why?”, you only see the violence and looting on the surface and disregard this concerns of this population entirely. you trivialize these people as chimps…niggers…violent animals, and don’t give it any other thought. because they are violent, they don’t deserve to be heard, you say. this is racism in its most subtle and insidious form.

you have to realize that these communities aren’t equipped to mount a “socially acceptable” response for you. ignorance and undereducation is rampant, and children who are born into that situation will only perpetuate the cycle. they are HELPLESS to it, and it takes an outsider with bigger insight and heart (which most MIT students lack apparently, judging by the response here) to extend a hand to these people. “

Prof. Bertschinger wouldn’t really even have to go that far out of his comfort zone to find out how wildly out of touch he is–because The New Yorker has a relatively even-handed profile of Darren Wilson this week:

I'm sorry, but that article by the head of the Physics Department and the Professor from the English Department at MIT is just awash with lulz.

The first thing he should have thought of was, “Oh, sad, a kid died.”

The second thing he should have thought of was, “A white kid or an Asian kid or Hispanic kid asked by a policeman to move out of the middle of the street where he was holding up traffic would have done so.”

The third thing he should have thought of was, “A white kid or Asian kid or Hispanic kid wouldn’t have thrown his fat azz body into the cop car and tried to take the cop’s firearm and tried to shoot him.”

The fourth thing he should have thought of was, “Dumb kid, likely high as a kite.”

The fifth thing he should have thought of was, “Black neighborhood where this all went down–gonna be a lot of lying about what happened and the black grievance industry heads will be there in a few minutes.”

Last thing: ” Glad it was the kid and not the cop who died.”

    Off-topic:

I don’t know if this was mentioned in the Armenian thread, but many of Rousey’s coaches are -yan Armenians.

Assuming average IQ of 85, and a standard Gasussian distribution, about 5% are 105 or higher.
    , @EH
The percent of black females above IQ 105 will vary according to the age when the test is taken (later showing higher gaps), and according to the specific test and sample size. Some sources I looked at gave numbers between 8% and 12% of Black women above IQ 105.

If we recast "105" to mean 1/3 standard deviation above the white male mean, and IQ to "g" (technically in this case the 1st principal component of the ASVAB tests set to mean 100 s.d. 15), and measure during early adulthood, e.g. age 22 , then according to this paper:

    http://www.researchgate.net/publication/234111868_Intellectual_Growth_during_Late_Adolescence_Effects_of_Sex_and_Race

    white men age 22 have an average g-score of 111.6 with an s.d. of 13.7, n=536 (+1/3 s.d. = 116.17)
black women have an average g-score of 91 with an s.d. of 11.1, n=166

plugging that into a spreadsheet (=1-NORMDIST(116.17; 91; 11.1; 1)), 1.17% of Black women are more than 1/3 s.d. above the White male mean. compared to 36.9% of White men, with a ratio between the two of 31.5, and considering the white male population is about 7 times the size of the black population, there are about 220 times as many White men as Black women with that level of intelligence or greater.

I think two important reasons why high IQ people often believe stupid stuff are:

    1. low self-esteem

    2. lack of real world experience

Correct these two factors and high IQ people are more likely to realise their potential to become intelligent realists.

The liberal idea of boosting self-esteem in high schools for example actually has some merit, but it's focusing on the wrong people. It should focus on guilty white liberals with high levels of neuroticism. Similarly, sentimental liberals and smug libertarians should have to spend at least one year of their lives doing a working class job and living in a working class neighbourhood. That will help make them more aware about issues such as crime, immigration and urban planning blunders.

Black Americans live in a parallel universe to the one we, a white woman and a white man, live in. This parallel universe is a murderous regime, in which black people are killed with impunity; there is apparently no accountability for white men who wear police uniforms. …

I guess MIT propeller-heads really ARE out of touch. Or (more likely) Cambridge. Black folks live in "parallel universes", huh? Something tells me that Henry Louis Gates (from across town) has never been over to his house for dinner.

I learned in high school that parallel lines never meet. I am sure the same principle applies to parallel universes. The reason that the professor has never had Henry Louis Gates over to dinner is because the professor is at MIT and Gates is at Harvard. It has nothing to do with the fact that Gates is black.

  48. The problem with pandering to Diversity, which is basically “GoodWhite Uplift” per Derbyshire, is that the lies pervade so deeply and the personnel are so badly polluted by lies that institutions become ineffective.

MIT is stacked with non-Whites males? Maybe 80% are non-White males? No wonder MIT has not produced nor will it EVER produce anything of value or interest in years. Its like stacking the LA Lakers with White guys. Sure Kevin Love will be competitive. But … Vlade Divac? Really?

Bottom line, if you want anything done that requires brainpower, instead of testosterone driven aggression and macho posturing, or grievance mongering, you need White Men. No other group produce anything. Though you might make an exception for Japanese men, but only in Japan.

Similarly, sentimental liberals and smug libertarians should have to spend at least one year of their lives doing a working class job and living in a working class neighbourhood. That will help make them more aware about issues such as crime, immigration and urban planning blunders.

I think two important reasons why high IQ people often believe stupid stuff are:

    1. low self-esteem

    2. lack of real world experience

Another factor could be Asperger’s/autism spectrum issues. I know it’s fashionable now to throw that explanation around but the combination of his essay and that goofball face screams clueless Aspergy dork.

It’s the warm compassion for all humanity that really endears me to the leftists, and assures me they mean well with Multiculturalism and Diversity.

I see exactly what you mean here but ultimately I take a “Gnonological” stance, to use Nick Land’s phrase, of conservatism. For me it’s the recognition of nihil (God of nature or nature, Gnon), not mere nihilism. The heat death of the hopes and dreams of leftists.

That was enraging, ugh. Meanwhile there's an interesting discussion between SJWs and other students if you follow the link to 'I saw you at MIT'

    http://isawyou.mit.edu/post.php?id=10667

Here's part of one of many angry responses to a pretty good takedown of SJW philosophy (comment #7), in this case defending black violence because the people "cannot express themselves in an eloquent way":

"african-american communities tend to be undereducated and insecure. combine those two together and you get a group of people that has MUCH difficulty expressing their feelings in an eloquent way. blacks are well aware of their lower position on the societal totem, and those who don't have the means or insight to do something about it in a constructive way have no choice but to channel their pent-up frustration through violence. if you can't see any truth in this statement, please do not bother reading on.

the saddest thing is that (supposedly) educated beings like poster 7 and many others born into higher social standing expect the african-american community to mount a coherent, nonviolent response before deeming them worthy of attention. "if there is another MLKjr, of course we'll listen!" you say enthusiastically. do you see how foolish this sounds? instead of asking the deeper "why?", you only see the violence and looting on the surface and disregard this concerns of this population entirely. you trivialize these people as chimps...niggers...violent animals, and don't give it any other thought. because they are violent, they don't deserve to be heard, you say. this is racism in its most subtle and insidious form.

you have to realize that these communities aren't equipped to mount a "socially acceptable" response for you. ignorance and undereducation is rampant, and children who are born into that situation will only perpetuate the cycle. they are HELPLESS to it, and it takes an outsider with bigger insight and heart (which most MIT students lack apparently, judging by the response here) to extend a hand to these people. "

Translation from Protected Class English: African Americans don’t know how to express their feelings except through violence and looting. Extend a helping hand to these miserable helpless victims.

    Off-topic:

Yeah, off topic, but I feel compelled to comment none the less. I used to be a casual UFC fan about seven years ago and my interest pretty much peaked with Brock Lesnar’s brief reign as heavyweight champ. Since then, it seems like Dana White bet the ranch on women fighters, and the ever-leftifying sports media have doubled down. The only time I hear anyone (ESPN, local sports radio, random dude bros) talking UFC, it’s all Rousey all the time. This has completely alienated me as a casual fan. The only thing I care less about than women fighters is Project Runway. That said, I’m only one data point.

Is this strategy working out well for UFC? Are more people ordering up pay per view? Or is it all an attempt to halt the decline? Is it a last ditch attempt to generate hype/relevance?

I used to be a casual UFC fan about seven years ago and my interest pretty much peaked with Brock Lesnar’s brief reign as heavyweight champ.

Brock Lesnar brought over a lot of "crossover" fans from pro-wrestling. But core fans (not the casual fans) absolutely loathed him, which only increased the PPV numbers (because people either love or hate heels, and even the ones who hate heels tune in to see them get crushed). Lesnar, though, was undeveloped at the technical level (he was a one-trick pony) and, worse, had a fatal habit of turning and running the other way when he got hit. As a lifelong student of combat sports, he was one of the least interesting fighters for me.

Is this strategy working out well for UFC? Are more people ordering up pay per view?

The UFC is really not in the women's MMA business. It is in the Ronda Rousey business. She has been extremely profitable for the promotion, probably on the par with its latest golden boy, Connor McGregor. And Rousey and McGregor could not have risen at a better time since the UFC desperately needed new stars after the likes of Anderson Silva, Georges St. Pierre, B. J. Penn, and others began to fade.

The UFC has been pursuing the strategy of promoting the brand rather than the individual fighters, and it has become increasingly clear that the strategy is a failure. People don't respond to brands - they respond to compelling fighters, whether because of their domination, hype or both. It is also desperately trying to transition from the PPV model to the network model, and has had mixed success at best. There appears to be an oversaturation of fights and those events without marquee names are pulling very low numbers.

The clear fact of high IQ is that it increases the power of ratiocination, not of rationality per se. That power can be used to defend the indefensible every bit as well as to ferret out the truth. History is replete with examples of obviously smart people defending things less smart people couldn’t find a way to defend — for example, Communism.

Dennis Prager sometimes infuriates leftist callers who expound these ideas by simply responding by asking them which graduate school they attended. That usually hits a nerve, and when the caller asks how did he know they went to graduate school, and what does that have to do with anything, Dennis responds that some ideas are so stupid that only someone who has gone to one of the nation's most prestigious graduate schools could believe them.

"It’s not like he doesn’t have other career options like some black woman with an afro and an IQ of 105."

What percent of black women have an IQ of 105?

The percent of black females above IQ 105 will vary according to the age when the test is taken (later showing higher gaps), and according to the specific test and sample size. Some sources I looked at gave numbers between 8% and 12% of Black women above IQ 105.

If we recast “105″ to mean 1/3 standard deviation above the white male mean, and IQ to “g” (technically in this case the 1st principal component of the ASVAB tests set to mean 100 s.d.

  86. “I guess MIT propeller-heads really ARE out of touch…”

I know lots of guys who are university professors (I live in an elite university town), and they all have the same problem as far as women and minorities are concerned – sampling bias. All of the women and minorities they meet are into the 95th percentile or way better; they are not within a couple of standard deviations of average, let alone below average.

Even the girls who work at local stores are in this high-end sample – either university girls who need to make ends meet, or women who graduated and can’t get a job in their chosen field of Women’s Studies.

That’s why they look at the honors or grad school classes in math and physics, and see that these classes are about 15% female, and they still think “Oh, just think of the poor girls who were discouraged from an exciting college experience of sitting by yourself and spending 80 hours per week solving equations.”

Sampling bias. Oh, and if you express any other opinion you will be cut from the herd and FIRED.

Bonus pic: It’s not that there aren’t ANY women who can do science. Even at the far end of the curve, while it’s mostly men, you will find an occasional woman. See this famous picture of the 1927 Solvay conference with true luminaries for a reasonably accurate picture of what happens when women are given a chance and do their best.

As a lifelong student of combat sports, he was one of the least interesting fighters for me.

Is this strategy working out well for UFC? Are more people ordering up pay per view?

The UFC is really not in the women’s MMA business.

People don’t respond to brands – they respond to compelling fighters, whether because of their domination, hype or both. It is also desperately trying to transition from the PPV model to the network model, and has had mixed success at best. There appears to be an oversaturation of fights and those events without marquee names are pulling very low numbers.

Still others vehemently disagree that teachers should be held to higher moral standards than other citizens. Increasingly, opined George Washington University Law School public interest law scholar Jonathan Turley in a 2012 Los Angeles Times piece, “public school teachers are being fired or suspended for perfectly lawful activities during off-work hours when those activities are deemed inappropriate by parents or school officials.” He cited examples of teachers getting disciplined for posting photos of themselves posing with strippers and holding cocktails and for being discovered to be former porn actors, all of which he believes are unfair.

More recent cases involve a Texas teacher fired for a racially charged Facebook comment in which he defends the infamous pool-party cop

“The Constitution protects free speech and expression,” said Stone. “This is a legal profession or hobby. She has the right to do it and it’s protected under free speech.”

In the state code, the rules for dismissing a teacher include a clause about immorality, but Stone said this video doesn’t fit that description.

So, we can conclude, if you are a White teacher who says something defending a White cop, you deserve to LOSE YOUR JOB.
If you are a Black teacher who strips in violation of your employment contract, that’s free speech and you probably *won’t* lose your job.

Thank you for the word ratiocination. I couldn't remember it and it fits perfectly. High intelligence and intense education are sometimes necessary in order to be able to condition yourself to believe the most barking mad, counter-factual ideas.

Rabbi Prager gave a speech at my son’s high school. He said the most effective way for teeanagers to make the world a better place is to act kinder toward their families. The kids were infuriated, except my son who thought it made sense, so he followed Prager’s advice. It made our lives quite a bit better.

"You guys keep up the snark.

Your going down (your daughters literally) in a couple of years."

I guess nobody would want your daughter because she's ugly.

I hope that the vibrant diversity you fellas cherish makes up for the loss of electricity and running water, because you won't have any of those things after the white men have gone.

If you want to know what your brilliant, multicultural future is going to look like, just play the movie 2001 backwards.

If I'm the first to post this then the sense of accomplishment will be overwhelming!

The other of us thought first of black students at MIT, brilliant young people, many of whom look like Michael Brown or Trayvon Martin

Do any of his students look like Hannah Graham or Eve Carson........or, well that endless list?
