Rolling Stone Retracts Article on Rape at University of Virginia
By RAVI SOMAIYA APRIL 5, 2015

Text strings of interest that don’t appear in the NYT article include:

hoax

Coakley

catfish

Haven Monahan

exist

email

Dawson’s Creek

vandalism

What about the 13,000 word retraction by the Columbia School of Journalism posted today by Rolling Stone:

hoax — No, nor fraud, no fiasco

Coakley — No.

The problems with the article started with its source, Mr. [Jan] Wenner said. He described her as “a really expert fabulist storyteller” who managed to manipulate the magazine’s journalism process. When asked to clarify, he said that he was not trying to blame Jackie, “but obviously there is something here that is untruthful, and something sits at her doorstep.”

So if Jackie is “a really expert fabulist storyteller,” shouldn’t her last name be finally revealed to give her future victims a sporting chance to avoid her?

catfish — No

Haven Monahan — Yes, twice in a single paragraph, but in a dull, nothing-to-see-here-let’s-move-along-folks fashion:

If Erdely had called Kathryn Hendley and Alex Stock – their true names – to check their sides of Jackie’s account of Sept. 28 and 29, they would have denied saying any of the words Jackie attributed to them (as Ryan would have as well). They would have described for Erdely a history of communications with Jackie that would have left the reporter with many new questions. For example, the friends said that Jackie told them that her date on Sept. 28 was not a lifeguard but a student in her chemistry class named Haven Monahan. (The Charlottesville police said in March they could not identify a UVA student or any other person named Haven Monahan.) All three friends would have spoken to Erdely, they said, if they had been contacted.

exist – While the New York Times continues to go out of its way to remain a Safe Space for all those readers who haven’t heard and don’t want to know that arch-villain Drew / Haven Monahan doesn’t, to get all metaphysical about it, exist, the Columbia report does mention the key ontological point three times that Rolling Stone never confirmed the existence of Drew / Haven.

email — lots of references to Rubin Erdely researching her story via email, but zero references to the Glitch in the Matrix email that Jackie sent Ryan under the name Haven Monahan five days after the purported gang rape on broken glass.

Dawson’s Creek Jackie’s email to Ryan from a catfished Haven Monahan account was a pastiche of sentimental stuff plagiarized from Dawson’s Creek and other bits of pop culture.

vandalism — No mention of the actual Night of Broken Glass at UVA when outraged Social Justice Warriors smashed the windows of the libeled Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house in response to the Rolling Stone article. Washington Times reporter Jeffrey Scott Shapiro had no trouble finding several of the perps to interview them about their crimes, but I’ve never heard any more attention devoted to this pogrom.

  1. All but two of those search terms don’t appear in the Columbia Journalism Review article either.

The string “Haven Monahan” occurs twice in one para, solely to point out that the CPD couldn’t prove that he existed.

The string “email” had 15 returns, but that’s not surprising, because that’s how SRE did most of her communicating with Jackie.

One hopes so. Also RS tried to absolve itself of all blame by placing it on Jackie while simultaneously saying she shouldn't be blamed.

  7. Face it, this U.Va. lacrosse water buffalo twist ending is going to melt into background static by the end of the week, maybe earlier… The media-savvy folks around the prez and peppered through the kinder, gentler, whiter D.C. hipster set are very good at selecting the right polarizing/inflammatory bauble from the Easter basket & flooding the zone w/ it. Fear no crisis of conscience among them, surely there will come fresh diversions aplenty in the springtime as the sap rises

  8. The Washington Post is expected to be announcing more layoffs on Monday. WAPO has already fired 40 non journalist employees.

As Steve has noted the WAPO was the only CMM(Cultural Marxist Media) outlet to question the UVA Rape Hoax. That was probably because UVA is in DC’s backyard and the WAPO also has lots of UVA alumni.

Still it will be worth noting if any of the WAPO’s reporters who contributed to the exposing of the hoax end up losing their jobs.

The week of Christmas, Ariel Kaminer who was the lone voice of sanity at the NYT who questioned campus rape hysteria and to stand up for the due process rights of the wrongly accused lost her job.

  10. jon says:

    From the article:

Social scientists analyzing crime records report that the rate of false rape allegations is 2 to 8 percent.

But from the abstract of the actual study that they link to in support of the quote above:

These results, taken in the context of an examination of
previous research, indicate that the prevalence of false allegations is between 2% and 10%.

Even when retracting, they can help but fudge things a little closer to the narrative. It’s pathological.

  11. And Fatso Sullivan keeps her $600,000+ job after publicly demonstrating poor judgment, anti-male bias and any failure to attempt amends now that the world knows that her sweet Jackie is a liar. None of the grandees here lost anything. The frats and their members were slimed nationally, shut down sans any justification and nothing happens to anybody even the lying bitch who started it all.

It would be interesting to hear what Tom Jefferson has to say about this hoax, including the hoax of blame and shame loosed upon the guiltless men and members of the fraternity by Sullivan, the overpaid hack yet allowed to remain at her post.

  16. What is also missing is the credit of how this story was exposed on the Internet thanks to Steve sailer. It reminds me of how the media tried to pretend Drudge didn’t break the Monica Lewinksy stuff or that bloggers David Codrea and Mike Vanderbough didn’t break the Fast and Furious story. These establishment media types cannot stand that the Internet bloggers break the stories they try to ignore and expose their own narrative.

  17. what? did nobody catch this in rolling stone….defining the new journalizm?

“Last July 8, Sabrina Rubin Erdely, a writer for Rolling Stone, telephoned Emily Renda, a rape survivor working on sexual assault issues as a staff member at the University of Virginia. Erdely said she was searching for a single, emblematic college rape case that would show “what it’s like to be on campus now … where not only is rape so prevalent but also that there’s this pervasive culture of sexual harassment/rape culture,” according to Erdely’s notes of the conversation.”

back in high school, we’d write our reports, and then search for the required number
of supporting quotes………………we usually got D’s, if not F’s.

jinkies! things have changed! and now i know that one (imagined)
    data point makes a trend.

Was the White House in on the #UVAHoax?

How Many White House Visits for Emily Renda?

How many times has Emily Renda gone to the White House? With this many visits, did anyone in Washington put her in touch with Sabrina Erdely? Did Erdely even consider any other colleges when she had this wonderful source just waiting in the wings to hook her up? Probably not. Wait for the pay off picture at the bottom. This sounds like an orchestrated media narrative to become policy not just in Virginia, but around America.

  22. Sabrina Rubin Erdely has been writing in this genre for many years, back to her days as a UPenn student. She made something of a career out of trolling for sexual weirdos and making their self-inflicted problems someone else’s fault.

And also being taken in by liars:

    http://www.bigtrial.net/2014/12/before-rolling-stone-was-conned-by.html

    Or simply lying:

    http://thefederalist.com/2014/12/12/sabrina-erdely-was-once-disciplined-by-stephen-glass-for-fabrication/

Sorry, we’re supposed to say “fabricating” or “fabulating” these days.

Rolling Stone, like other magazines, hired her because a lot of people like that sort of porn. And they don’t much care whether it’s true or not. It draws clicks.

But Erdely will not get sued despite making this species of mendacity her specialty. How come? I’m guessing it has something to do with the fact that her husband is a Center City Philly lawyer who “provides sophisticated, aggressive personal advocacy.” He also appears to be groomed for a judgeship as an assistant Philly DA.
