Above is a graph from that paper by the quasi-Nobel laureate in Economics and his wife:

Rising morbidity and mortality in midlife among white non-Hispanic Americans in the 21st century
Anne Case and Angus Deaton

This paper documents a marked increase in the all-cause mortality of middle-aged white non-Hispanic men and women in the United States between 1999 and 2013. This change reversed decades of progress in mortality and was unique to the United States; no other rich country saw a similar turnaround. The midlife mortality reversal was confined to white non-Hispanics; black non-Hispanics and Hispanics at midlife, and those aged 65 and above in every racial and ethnic group, continued to see mortality rates fall. This increase for whites was largely accounted for by increasing death rates from drug and alcohol poisonings [overdoses], suicide, and chronic liver diseases and cirrhosis. Although all education groups saw increases in mortality from suicide and poisonings, and an overall increase in external cause mortality, those with less education saw the most marked increases. Rising midlife mortality rates of white non-Hispanics were paralleled by increases in midlife morbidity. Self-reported declines in health, mental health, and ability to conduct activities of daily living, and increases in chronic pain and inability to work, as well as clinically measured deteriorations in liver function, all point to growing distress in this population. We comment on potential economic causes and consequences of this deterioration. …

The increase in deaths are much worse at the bottom of the educational scale, but note that this phenomenon isn’t just caused by less educated white being more of a hard core than in the past: the upward sloping red line is for all whites in the age 45-54 bracket. To use Charles Murray’s terms from Coming Apart, the death rate is still falling in Belmont while it has skyrocketed in Fishtown.

Discussion
The increase in midlife morbidity and mortality among US white non-Hispanics is only partly understood. The increased availability of opioid prescriptions for pain that began in the late 1990s has been widely noted, as has the associated mortality (14, 20‒22). The CDC estimates that for each prescription painkiller death in 2008, there were 10 treatment admissions for abuse, 32 emergency department visits for misuse or abuse, 130 people who were abusers or dependent, and 825 nonmedical users (23). Tighter controls on opioid prescription brought some substitution into heroin and, in this period, the US saw falling prices and rising quality of heroin, as well as availability in areas where heroin had been previously largely unknown (14, 24, 25).

The epidemic of pain which the opioids were designed to treat is real enough, although the data here cannot establish whether the increase in opioid use or the increase in pain came first. Both increased rapidly after the mid-1990s. Pain prevalence might have been even higher without the drugs, although long-term opioid use may exacerbate pain for some (26), and consensus on the effectiveness and risks of long-term opioid use has been hampered by lack of research evidence (27). Pain is also a risk factor for suicide (28). Increased alcohol abuse and suicides are likely symptoms of the same underlying epidemic (18, 19, 29), and have increased alongside it, both temporally and spatially.

Although the epidemic of pain, suicide, and drug overdoses preceded the financial crisis, ties to economic insecurity are possible. After the productivity slowdown in the early 1970s, and with widening income inequality, many of the baby-boom generation are the first to find, in midlife, that they will not be better off than were their parents. Growth in real median earnings has been slow for this group, especially those with only a high school education.

However, the productivity slowdown is common to many rich countries, some of which have seen even slower growth in median earnings than the United States, yet none have had the same mortality experience (lanekenworthy.net/shared-prosperity and ref. 30). The United States has moved primarily to defined-contribution pension plans with associated stock market risk, whereas, in Europe, defined-benefit pensions are still the norm. Future financial insecurity may weigh more heavily on US workers, if they perceive stock market risk harder to manage than earnings risk, or if they have contributed inadequately to defined-contribution plans (31).

A bottle of Vicodin as Fishtown retirement planning?

Our findings may also help us understand recent large increases in Americans on disability. The growth in Social Security Disability Insurance in this age group (32) is not quite the near-doubling shown in Table 2 for the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) measure of work limitation, but the scale is similar in levels and trends. This has been interpreted as a response to the generosity of payments (33), but careful work based on Social Security records shows that most of the increase can be attributed to compositional effects, with the remainder falling in the category of (hard to ascertain) increases in musculoskeletal and mental health disabilities (34); our morbidity results suggest that disability from these causes has indeed increased. Increased morbidity may also explain some of the recent otherwise puzzling decrease in labor force participation in the United States, particularly among women (35).

Perhaps painkiller overdoses, mental health declines, reported pain, disability, dropping out of the labor force, lower wages, and The Big Unmentionable (immigration) all tie together. As Hispanics flooded in, lowering wages, blue collar whites felt less motivated to stay in the labor force as they aged and their bodies got creakier. Getting on disability requires, I imagine, an ability to get doctors and other authority figures to believe your account of musculoskeletal and/or mental health disabilities. The most effective way to get other people to believe you are disabled by physical and mental pain is to believe it yourself. And if you tell the doctor your back is killing you so much you can’t work and you persuade him, he’ll likely write you a prescription for some pills.

P.S. In the post above, I offer another factor as a theory, a generational explanation.

It is clear that, barring civil war, dissolution of the US and ethnic cleansing (which would probably render the "hwyte Americans as a minority" meme moot, and which I personally think is more likely to happen than not), or at least a massive shift in immigration policy and an increase in hwyte birthrates (not very likely but still conceivable), hwyte Americans will cease to constitute a majority of the US population in this century.

What is not so clear is whether the current anti-white Zeitgeist would increase in intensity, decrease in intensity or remain the same. Regardless, I don't think younger hwytes are necessarily more comfortable with becoming a minority. We may have gotten more exposure to non-hwytes while growing up but that often leads to more race-realism since we are closer to the emperor and can better discern his lack of clothing. Plus we tend to be more internet savvy and thus are exposed to more anti-white attitudes than non net users. And we have access to things like Worldstar and Liveleak which show overwhelming evidence of things that go against the mainstream media narrative.

Let's not overstate the case here.

Roughly half of the increased suicide cohort are prog types who happily repeated this mantra in their search for validation. Maybe the cognitive strife between what they said and what they saw pushed them over the edge.

There is some despair among the non-progressive on this issue, but most just harbor anger about public policy demonizing them. They, and everyone else for that matter, don't believe that White men are evil; realizing that this is one of those societal lies (Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny) that get told in service to a simplifying narrative.

I was thinking about the same thing. Obesity certainly reduces people's quality of life, and I wouldn't be surprised if it contributed to some of the high levels of back pain. However we don't see the same higher death rates for non-Whites who have gone through the same obesity epidemic.

The obesity epidemic is a recent thing, and you don't(generally) get heart attacks from it when you're thirty. What will happen when the present obese generation reaches retirement age, if obesity really is as unhealthy as they say? I think a lot of people will wonder why more wasn't done.

Do a Google search on "Growth in European obesity" or "growth in obesity in the UK". The current prevalence of obesity in the US is not that different from that in Europe or the UK, particularly when one controls for race/ethnicity.

I guess you've been out of the Euro Zone for a while or didn't get around much while you were there. The problem of increasing rates of obesity is now common across all developed countries. The US is just ahead of the curve. There's a certain smugness to your comment suggesting that you think Europe and the UK have been slower to develop this problem due to some kind of moral superiority rather than delayed entry into what appears to be another unfortunate aspect of late-stage economic development.

I spent a whole day at a salon du livre (a public event where authors sell their books) in a French town, last week. Most people were white. I was surprised to see that the proportion of overweight young women was rather high. Much higher than the proportion of similarly overweight or obese middle-aged or elderly women.

This study is about how American whites are dying at rates much higher than American non-whites. And blacks and Hispanics have significantly higher rates of obesity: Non-Hispanic blacks have the highest age-adjusted rates of obesity (47.8%) followed by Hispanics (42.5%), non-Hispanic whites (32.6%), and non-Hispanic Asians (10.8%)

  6. It’s interesting that they mention more alcohol deaths. Has drinking increased that much in the last decade and a half? That should be able to be cross-checked against alcohol sales.

I wonder if it’s a flip side of higher divorce rates. Divorced, poor economic prospects, bad diet, depressed and on drugs or alcohol. Maybe mix in some bad culture as well, or a long string of bad choices catching up with you in one’s 50′s.

According to this study, in America, 34.3% of non-Hispanic whites are obese (BMI>30) while 66.7% are at least overweight (BMI>25).

As to the EU countries, the prevalence of obesity varies from a low of 7.3% in Sweden to a high of 23.2% in the UK (these are averages of men and women). Generally, the prevalence is between 10-20%, compared to 34.3% in US whites.

The prevalence of overweight and obesity (BMI>25) ranges from a low of 40% in Sweden to a high of 60% in the UK. Generally, the prevalence, averaged over men and women, is about 50%, compared to 66.7% in US whites.

If you are from Continental Europe, white Americans will definitely look disproportionately fat. The high frequency of people who are really obese and not just overweight is especially notable.

Furthermore, Europe has itself seen de-industrialization and increased immigration. I guess the counter argument would be their more generous safety net…

before the great recession we had the 2000 recession and the jobless recovery....while the 2007 was so much worse it seems we forget the significance of the 2000-2003 downturn which resulted in the Fed helping to pump up the housing market.

in the US massive immigration has resulted in reduced wages for blue color workers , in addition NAFTA helped push many jobs outside our borders. The working class also faced higher divorce rates, as their wives saw less benefits to marriage to a working class man. All these factors made doing drugs and drinking a more attractive option for these men who have felt the brunt of our changing demographics and the rise of feminism.

  13. Being middle-aged, everyone I know who has died in the last ten years, as well as those I know now who will probably die soon, did a lot of cocaine in the seventies and eighties. Robin Williams didn’t surprise me at all. Cocaine gives you brain damage. Nobody is immune to the damage.

    http://www.livescience.com/19867-cocaine-ages-brain-shrink.html

A less robust brain can produce all kinds of other medical problems that might not seem related, but are. Problems that can accelerate aging all over the body, so that the problems compound on themselves, sometimes fairly rapidly. Once you trash the brain, all kinds of things can go wrong, and do.

Being overweight accelerates decrepitude even more rapidly. Too many boomers still think of food as a recreational device.

There has to be a class element in the obesity epidemic. I live in a prosperous suburb with a high education level, lots of Asian and dot Indian high tech workers and rarely see obesity at stores, Costco, church etc. No obesity in own extended family, just some overweight in the over-50s. Is it the self-discipline that is required to get into the upper middle income groups?
    , @DWB
I've moved back to the US this summer after a few years living in France. The prevalence rates you quote align with what my anecdotal experiences tell me. There are fat people in Europe, and the number is growing. But as a population (which is what an epidemiological study will look at), continental Europeans are less likely to be fat, and much less likely to be obese.

But as others point out, this does not explain why this phenomenon seems to be landing on caucasians uniquely. Hispanics are even more likely to be overweight, as are black Americans.

In a recent CDC study published in JAMA , blacks have the highest rates of obesity in the country (48%), followed by Hispanics (43%) and then whites (33%). Asians have by far the lowest rates (11%).

The on-board comorbidities - type two diabetes, dyslipidaemia, hypertension - are all higher in both black and Hispanic people.

And this is not even a phenomena which only occurs in higher classes, but also a lower class thing.

  20. Yesterday I started sketching out what a representative member of the cohort would look like. I happened to focus on the youngest edge of the cohort.

Mike Smith is 50 years old, born in 1965. His father James graduated high school in 1963, started dating Mary in 1964. Mike was born 7 months after the wedding, because these things happen. James worked in a factory from HS graduation in 1963 until 1992 when the plant closed. James and Mary split up in the late 1970s when Mike was in middle school. High school Mike didn’t care for Mary’s boyfriends, and weekend dad James did what he could, but he only had Mike on the weekends, when Mike wanted to be out with his friends anyway.

Mike finished high school in 1983, worked fast-food jobs. Moved up a little, working for hourly wages but never hit salaried status. Smoked some pot, drank, smoked cigarettes. Girlfriends came and went, fathered 3 kids by 2 different women, stepfathered another one for a while. Now he’s 50, and clearly things are never going to come together for him. Maybe he’s managed to be steadily employed in a low-wage low-skill job that pays the rent but that’s about it. More likely long periods on unemployment, maybe he’s out on disability.

No career. From a broken family. Youth is gone. His kids are growing up or have grown up in broken families, and aren’t likely to do any better than he is. Frankly, he’s a failure at life. He’s dying because he has nothing better to do.

The quick answer here is "support group". Mike would do much better if he had more friends; more constructive social activities; more chances for gainful employment from supportive employers (instead of our current crop of predators who want to replace him with an immigrant); more supportive gov't officials; etc.; that would help him maintain a marriage and other social ties that keep him interested in life.

That's essentially one side of my family. One of my uncles fits that to a tee, although he was pretty successful early on. He crawled into a bottle 20 years ago and hasn't come out. My 92 year old grandmother is essentially keeping him alive through her social security and making sure that he still eats healthy, or at all.

An aunt on that side drank herself to death in her 50s. Another uncle is banged up from years of hard living and is on disability. He's trying his damnedest to fight his way through the pain without using painkillers.

There's really nothing that can be done. One of the things that modern American culture glosses over is that thing don't always gets better. Some problems aren't fixable.

Well now, that attitude isn't very meritocratic on his part, while so many shopping/casual-sex/cat-video apps are rotting in the fields of pre-invention. Mike ought to enroll in a free "coding" course (from which, yes, we will incidentally gather certain telemetry here n' there)

    More Jesus.

No, really. Religion can provide a sense of purpose and solace when outside reinforcements are lacking. After all, Jesus loves you, even if everyone else thinks you're lame.

I don't believe in God, but this is the reason I never proselytize for atheism. Humans evolved to believe in something, and taking it away can be very unhealthy over the long run.

  21. Ask any orthopedic surgeon, spine surgeon, pain-management physician (if you can find an honest one) or any such medical provider who deals routinely with medical care of the workman’s-compensation or SSI disability population. They are likely to tell you the same thing I have found:

Getting generous Workman’s comp benefits, or SSI disability, or a large litigation reward, by amplifying an innocuous musculo-skeletal injury is a game. The game requires some intelligence, lots of persistence, and some connections to the world of unscrupulous plaintiff’s lawyers.

Of all the racial groups: whites are most likely to succeed at the game. In general, Latinos lack the language skills and the connections to navigate the game. Blacks tend to lack the intelligence and the patience (they settle too quickly for too little.)

The reward for winning the game: a lifetime structured payment, a legal and pseudo-medical rationale never to re-enter the workforce, and a pseudo-medical justification for a lifetime of painkillers and unecessary medical and surgical procedures.

In other words, the rewards for winning the game are a path to obesity, overdose and suicide.

Like I said, the US is ahead of the curve but the UK and Europe are only about a decade or two behind if current trends continue. Age-cohort breakdowns give a clearer picture of what I’m talking about. something is going on here but it has nothing to do with national moral traits.

The Narrative of Diversity America is that White Men represent the Past. White Men embody the Evil and Injustice that America has and will Overcome.

The constant pounding of this Narrative would seem to take a toll.
A day doesn't go bye without a Triumphant Prog article about how the Demographic Inevitability of the the Prog Coalition. The Whites will die off and the Progs will reign. All those Old, White Bitter-Clingers will finally shuffle off and, at last, we'll pass Gun Control.

Younger Whites perhaps will be comfortable being a Minority in Diversity America.
Middle-aged Whites appear unable to adapt as they transition from the Hated Majority to a Hated Minority.

It is clear that, barring civil war, dissolution of the US and ethnic cleansing (which would probably render the “hwyte Americans as a minority” meme moot, and which I personally think is more likely to happen than not), or at least a massive shift in immigration policy and an increase in hwyte birthrates (not very likely but still conceivable), hwyte Americans will cease to constitute a majority of the US population in this century.

What is not so clear is whether the current anti-white Zeitgeist would increase in intensity, decrease in intensity or remain the same. Regardless, I don’t think younger hwytes are necessarily more comfortable with becoming a minority.

However we don’t see the same higher death rates for non-Whites who have gone through the same obesity epidemic.

  26. My initial assumption was this was a combined result of a lot of the Fishtown trends:
    A) actual back pain, exacerbated by more sedentary lifestyles and obesity
    B) lower employment prospects and more opportunity to get on the dole in the form of SS-Disability
    C) lots of guns in the house, and fairly cheap liquor; easy access to opioids
    D) social atomization, living alone or unmarried, lower church and social group/neighborhood involvement.
    E) less valorization by the culture at large

I really want to see the gender-disaggregated graphs.

Let’s not overstate the case here.

They, and everyone else for that matter, don’t believe that White men are evil; realizing that this is one of those societal lies (Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny) that get told in service to a simplifying narrative.

It's interesting that they mention more alcohol deaths. Has drinking increased that much in the last decade and a half? That should be able to be cross-checked against alcohol sales.

I wonder if it's a flip side of higher divorce rates. Divorced, poor economic prospects, bad diet, depressed and on drugs or alcohol. Maybe mix in some bad culture as well, or a long string of bad choices catching up with you in one's 50's.

We’re fatter, more heavily medicated, and more atomized than other generations–any of those might be part of the explanation.

Is it the self-discipline that is required to get into the upper middle income groups?

The most obvious (particulaly from visual inspection) reason for why US white death rates (and pain rates) stand out is obesity. As a Euro coming to the US, it's quite a striking phenomenon that's hard to miss.

I spent a whole day at a salon du livre (a public event where authors sell their books) in a French town, last week. Most people were white. I was surprised to see that the proportion of overweight young women was rather high. Much higher than the proportion of similarly overweight or obese middle-aged or elderly women.

  40. You have two choices when your group is attacked: capitulate or die. All white cultures (with the possible exception of Australia) have chosen the latter. I know plenty of angry middle aged white guys. Their response to the cultural shift that is happening is to mutter bitterly and do nothing.
Life is tough these days for middle aged white guys that are not near the top of the skills heap. Despite all the incessant bs coming from the black lives matter people do you honestly think it has been a cake walk for middle skilled black people all these years?! Even highly skilled blacks have to carry the weight of everyone assuming they are where they are because of affirmative action (often true but imagine how annoying that would be if you are actually smart).
Life has been tough for almost all people throughout all history. Western countries have had the wind at their backs for so many decades now that people have become so lazy that they think that their culture getting overrun is some kind of unstoppable force. You don’t need to deport a soul in the US to radically change the immigration forces here overnight. Mandatory national E-verify, raid some Fortune 500 companies breaking the law after a warning period, target a few small locally well known businesses and its game over.
The reason this is happening is no one actually cares. Whining in an internet forum does not cut it.

  41. Why would American non-Hispanic Whites be so singularly susceptible to pain (which I assume to mean actual physical pain, rather than mere mental anguish, let alone merely some amorphous sense of ennui), and thus to opioid abuse, compared to Hispanics and non-Whites in America, or to Whites elsewhere in the world? Why would RIFfed Whites who fake a disability to get on S.S.I. take their unneeded opioid prescriptions and consume them, rather than flushing them down the toilet, hiding them away somewhere, or selling them illegally, at a profit, to already-drug-addicted hipsters and housewives?

Boredom. The doctors give them a legal prescription to get high, so they take advantage of it. Because they've got nothing else going on.
    , @Hapalong Cassidy
"Why would American non-Hispanic Whites be so singularly susceptible to pain"?

I don't know, but it does seem that Hispanics of the Mestizo and Amerindian variety have a higher pain threshold than the average human. My dad made this observation when we were watching a boxing match in which the Mexican fighter's strategy seemed to be to wear down the other guy's fists with his face.

Seems far fetched. There are a lot of good reasons to stop this insane level of immigration, but I’m thinking that’s not one of them. I look forward to reading Steve’s other theory, though.

One possible avenue to follow: A friend of mine was a social worker who worked for the county health department in STD control. He said that every time a new breakthrough in AIDS research or treatment was publicized and celebrated in the media, the infection rate for HIV/AIDS would rise not long afterwards. Why? Because the gays would start thinking of AIDS less as an incurable disease and more as a chronic condition, so their sexual practices would change to reflect that.

Just as the media helps create an aura of invincibility among gays or junkies, it might also be doing so among white men (who aren’t into educating or improving themselves) with stories about other medical breakthroughs. It could also be that with higher divorce rates and less involvement with children, men are seeing less need to be there for their children. I’m an older dad, so I frequently think about what life for my kids will be like after I’m gone.

  43. I personally know, and know very well, three in that cohort who on the surface died of alcohol or drug poisoning. On the surface. All three were white males ranging from 46 to 56. All were college graduates. All had seen personal issues (relationship failure) and professional or financial setbacks due at least as much to the overall economy as their own mistakes (i.e. they were NOT incompetents). They all thought America had no chance of recovering, that whites particularly are hated and hunted by government, media, and various minorities. All three were officially chalked up to “accident”. None possessed any hope or will to live. In all of them there was a dramatic change in outlook between around 2000-2009.

Does this sound familiar? Other than the deaths, this describes at least half the people I know. Clinton left our nation in poor shape, but Bush and his successor have really driven the railroad spikes into her coffin.

I’ve moved back to the US this summer after a few years living in France.

The on-board comorbidities – type two diabetes, dyslipidaemia, hypertension – are all higher in both black and Hispanic people.

  45. Pretty much corresponds to when NAFTA and PNTR with China trade deals kicked and resulted in many millions of white factory workers permanently losing their jobs. During the Bush years by additional job losses in the IT sector due to off-shoring accelerated and it continued on during the Obama years.

Really what do you expect when you throw ten million whites out of well paying jobs with many never finding a decent job again? You will get entire communities hammered, families shattered, men losing their self-worth.

Yeah it’s hard for a lot of office workers to understand but those guys who worked in factories did take pride in what they did, they were productive men who supported their families. Their self-worth, pride and supporter of their family was all taken away from them.

Look at what happened when that idiot Thatcher in England gutted the country’s industrial base by selling and closing plant after plant in the name of privatization. The white working class in England was ruined because of her.

    No mystery here.

And for once I have no smart answer as to What Should Be Done that would do much of anything about it.

That’s essentially one side of my family. One of my uncles fits that to a tee, although he was pretty successful early on. He crawled into a bottle 20 years ago and hasn’t come out. My 92 year old grandmother is essentially keeping him alive through her social security and making sure that he still eats healthy, or at all.

An aunt on that side drank herself to death in her 50s. Another uncle is banged up from years of hard living and is on disability. He’s trying his damnedest to fight his way through the pain without using painkillers.

There’s really nothing that can be done. One of the things that modern American culture glosses over is that thing don’t always gets better. Some problems aren’t fixable.

“Why would RIFfed Whites who fake a disability to get on S.S.I. take their unneeded opioid prescriptions and consume them, rather than flushing them down the toilet…”

Boredom. The doctors give them a legal prescription to get high, so they take advantage of it. Because they’ve got nothing else going on.

the lack of job opportunities , declining wages while the elites and politicians are only concerned with the problems of minorities in America. Our culture has diminished the contribution of our working class while demonizing whites for causing the problems of Black America.

Hispanics in America , unlike working class whites, have been embraced by America. The problems of Blacks is always due to whites...these working class white men are being replaced by low cost workers from the third world and at the same time the culture mocks them for their failures.

most hispanics in America are under the age of 30, thus the number of hispanics in 1990 aged 45-55 was quite small, under 10%. The number of hispanic men aged 45-55 today is still under 15% and they have seen their status growing in America, as their demographics increase and most of them have seen their standard of living rising between 1990 and today, as the government made it easier to buy homes without documents and they have seen their neighborhoods become more and more hispanic as whites have seen their numbers falling each year.

it is depressing to witness ones people in decline, white males have been enjoying the decline as hispanics are enjoying a boom in their privileges and status here in America.

  50. The popular culture attacks whites as whites – and demonises them. This must affect *some* – yes wages have stagnated but they have stagnated for all ethnic groups (i.e. among the uneducated blue collar workers in all ethnic groups).

The amazing thing is, the average white American has no idea how good his/her life still is. You really want to know how bad life can be? Go to South America or Africa or most of the (as yet) not war-torn Middle East or the slums of Mumbai and you know how good you have it.

Also, how big a part does religion play? Loss of religious faith correlates to a serious loss of hope among some. For the affluent, lack of faith doesn’t seem to matter – their life looks and seems good and they have faith in the future.

I don’t know, but it does seem that Hispanics of the Mestizo and Amerindian variety have a higher pain threshold than the average human. My dad made this observation when we were watching a boxing match in which the Mexican fighter’s strategy seemed to be to wear down the other guy’s fists with his face.

  52. The causes behind suicide can be seen in the four human deep satisfactions in life (using Charles Murray language):

The one that explains the class bias is vocation: Across all race/ethnic groups, vocations have gotten better for the educated/skilled and worse for the less educated and specialized.

The one that explains the white ethnic/race bias is community: Whites have been uniquely targeted to lose their exclusive community structures and artifacts. Other ethnic groups have their communities and identities when they want them. I’d say this has been more of a USA thing but I would expect this to hit Europe in the coming decades.

Solutions do exist to both of the above issues. Nothing simple, but these things aren’t inevitable irreversible trends.

The most obvious (particulaly from visual inspection) reason for why US white death rates (and pain rates) stand out is obesity. As a Euro coming to the US, it's quite a striking phenomenon that's hard to miss.

However, the new book has a huge number of references to French writers, politicians, brands, addresses, and so forth that make it a complicated read for us Americans. 69. Steve,

Maybe you’ve covered this before on iSteve, but I think a Foucaultian-style “archaeology” of the term “white non-Hispanic” would very useful.

The reason is that this term strikes me (just now) as extremely offensive to blacks. Why do “Hispanics” get lumped in with whites?

I found a WWII-era poster recently encouraging the US and Mexico (“all Americans”) to join in the struggle against the Axis powers. I think Mexicans have been getting an unfair advantage at the expense of blacks for a while. Blacks should be angry, very angry at the injustice of brown people being labelled white.

  70. Again, I’m on the bourbon, but there’s other components here that neither you nor “economists” are taking into account.

From psychological literature, I think there is a connection between pain and depression. Although we experience pain as one emotion, pain seems to have a “sensation” component and a CNS “make it stop” component. People who do things like meditate learn how to silence the second component of pain. Eventually, when the brain learns to dissociate them, quieting the “make-it-stop” component causes the sensation to be diminished as well.

Depressed people don’t have sensation, but their the CNS “make it stop” circuit is activated. I think opioids work on both aspects of sensation and make-it-stop. Both the body and mind are quieted.

How does this relate back to economics?

I think, due to a vast array of social factors such as not having to do farm chores, etc, Americans have lost the ability to quiet the “make-it-stop” circuit. We don’t have a Zen tradition or some such, so nobody recognizes that traditional Western concepts like “stiff upper lip” and “suck it up” contain meditative aspects, but they do. Economists can’t have difficulty studying the fact that in our current “transvaluation of all values” in which Americans are told that emotiveness is essential, they are essentially told to stop meditating as well. The result is an increase in the inability to silence the make-it-stop circuits and, consequently, the sensation circuits as well.

Trend was evident prior to Great Recession. That the Great Recession hasn't resulted in an acute exacerbation suggests that economic causes may not be the main culprit. Furthermore, Europe has itself seen de-industrialization and increased immigration. I guess the counter argument would be their more generous safety net...

I'll throw out: cohort effect. The rise in death rate corresponds to Boomers reaching middle age. Is Putnam's Bowling Alone thesis applicable to Europe?

Might also look at % males married. Aren't studies showing lower life expectancy for unmarried vs married middle-aged men (and older) legion?

A recent NYT article seems relevant:http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/18/nyregion/dying-alone-in-new-york-city.html?_r=0

before the great recession we had the 2000 recession and the jobless recovery….while the 2007 was so much worse it seems we forget the significance of the 2000-2003 downturn which resulted in the Fed helping to pump up the housing market.

in the US massive immigration has resulted in reduced wages for blue color workers , in addition NAFTA helped push many jobs outside our borders. The working class also faced higher divorce rates, as their wives saw less benefits to marriage to a working class man. All these factors made doing drugs and drinking a more attractive option for these men who have felt the brunt of our changing demographics and the rise of feminism.

"Why would RIFfed Whites who fake a disability to get on S.S.I. take their unneeded opioid prescriptions and consume them, rather than flushing them down the toilet..."

Boredom. The doctors give them a legal prescription to get high, so they take advantage of it. Because they've got nothing else going on.

the lack of job opportunities , declining wages while the elites and politicians are only concerned with the problems of minorities in America. Our culture has diminished the contribution of our working class while demonizing whites for causing the problems of Black America.

Hispanics in America , unlike working class whites, have been embraced by America. The problems of Blacks is always due to whites…these working class white men are being replaced by low cost workers from the third world and at the same time the culture mocks them for their failures.

most hispanics in America are under the age of 30, thus the number of hispanics in 1990 aged 45-55 was quite small, under 10%.

    "...the lack of job opportunities..."

Yeah, absolutely. Chronic unemployment is the principal cause of boredom. People with a job, and money to spend on their off-hours, can usually combat boredom in other ways. The combination of too much time on your hands, plus no money, can be quite destructive...especially if some pharmacist hands you a bottle of Oxycodone. I don't even like "downers," but would probably be tempted to see what I could get out of them, after a year of sitting on my ass, watching daytime television.

  76. Didn’t Vioxx come out in 1998? And wasn’t taken off market until 2004? I read an estimate somewhere that it caused an additional 50K early deaths per year. That might explain the initial jump off the low. However the trend keeps going, so there’s something else going on.

I have a friend with degenerative arthritis in his hips, and he was devastated when they took Vioxx off the market. He didn't care how many years he could potentially lose; it was the only thing that worked for his pain.

Luckily, a monthly injectable became available that does the job for him, but he went 7 years without serious pain relief.
