Status update: Facebook not so diverse

That’s an interesting new standard for employment diversity: not your metropolitan commuting area, or state, or country, but all your customers in the world.
The lopsided numbers are just the latest from a major Silicon Valley company to paint a stark picture of an industry sector dominated by white men
Damn white men stealing an entire industry sector from the women of color who started it: Frederica Terman, Wilhelmina Hewlett, Willa Shockley, Roberta Noyce, Gordonette Moore, Stephanie Wozniak, etc. etc.
and are sure to escalate an already heated debate over the lack of diversity in the tech industry.
Nearly 70% of Facebook employees are men and 57% are white. Asians make up 34% of employees.
But Hispanics represent just 4% and African Americans are just 2% of Facebook’s workforce.
When it comes to technical employees, the numbers are even more grim. Eighty-five percent are male, 53% white and 41% Asian. Hispanics make up just 3% and African Americans just 1% of the workforce.
At the top of the company, the statistics are no better. Seventy-seven percent of senior level employees are men, 74% are white and 19% are Asian. Hispanics account for 4% and African Americans for 2% of employees in high level positions.
“We build products to connect the world, and this means we need a team that understands and reflects many different communities, backgrounds and cultures,” Maxine Williams, Facebook’s global head of diversity, said in a blog post.
Technology is a key driver of the U.S. economy. It makes the products from iPhones to Google search that Americans use every day. Yet the companies that make these products do not mirror the demographics of the United States in race, gender or age.
So that means this changing-face-of-America stuff wasn’t such a hot idea? What you’re trying to say is that white men built America into a technological powerhouse but the workforce keeps get less white male, so the country is in big trouble, right?
The pressure is especially high for Facebook. Its users span races and cultures around the globe, and the majority of Facebook users are women, making it crucial for Facebook to have a diverse workforce, said Stanford fellow Vivek Wadhwa, author of the upcoming book Innovating Women.
Vivek Wadhwa is not a woman. Nor innovative.
Facebook finds itself in a bigger and brighter spotlight because its No. 2 executive is Sheryl Sandberg, one of Silicon Valley’s most prominent female leaders and the author of the best seller Lean In.
She told USA TODAY earlier this month that the lack of diversity in male-dominated corporate America is “pretty depressing.”
The concept of “conflict of interest” has just evaporated from the mental toolbox.

These stories, in which, usually, a very secure and well compensated exec pontificates from on high on how his/her corporate workforce must ‘represent’ the generality of the US, (or now as it seems the ‘global’) workforce, in the same way that a politician ‘represents’ an electorate, on assumes, always make me laugh.
Invariably, the secure annd well compensated exec who does the pontificating is by his/her own yardstick a ‘privileged’ member of one of the ‘over-represented’ groups. Yet this irony is forever lost. The simple fact is that the greatest possible act the exec could possibly do to achieve the goal of ‘global representation’ is to resign his/her own position and appoint in his/her stead a worthy member of the globally under-represented, as a way of ‘setting the example’, you know the ‘right thing’ to do both ‘morally and ethically’.
But in practice, I’ve never but never heard of such a magnaminous and exemplary act ever being committed in the whole long and fraught history of corporate America.
Wilkey’s right to vote is equal to your right to vote. In fact it’s way more equal.
They don’t mean diversity – they mean “diversity”. If the percentages were lopsided in the opposite direction (85% female, 91% Hispanic & African-American, and the rest white and Asian males) it wouldn’t “paint a stark picture” at all. The numbers would be hailed as a triumph, not lamented as grim.
As pointed out in earlier posts on this blog, the writers of these articles conveniently forget to mention that whites are underrepresented as a % of their population, which would lead to the unfortunate conclusion that these companies employ too many Asians.
Also by this author’s logic, Samsung and Sony need to employ a lot more Americans, Chinese and Indians in their HQ, since the vast majority of their sales come from outside their home countries.

I bet when the Sony Walkman was king, Sony’s employees ‘did not reflect the demographics’ of those around the world who bought and used the Walkman. I don’t think the starting lineup of the Boston Celtics ‘reflects the demographics of their fans’ in Boston either. Nokia used to be the world’s dominant supplier of mobile phones; having visited its HQ just outside Helsinki, I can tell you that its workforce also did not ‘reflect the demographics’ of those around the world who bought and used its phones. Etc etc.

What is “pretty depressing” is that much of your male-dominated corporate America will soon be retiring, then the magical Negroes and wise Latinas will have to put-up or shut-up in the workplace. Everyone I know is going to take retirement as soon as they can; they’ve been planning their exit while employers have been sleeping contently, believing that the job market is so crappy that they can be lazy about workforce retention and succession planning. It’s insane, if you think about it, to believe that any company or field of work or in fact any human group should reflect the demographics of the city, the country or (gasp!) the world. Why? Why should it be so? This is blank slatism go mad.
There are more female nurses than male, there are more female prostitutes than male. There are more black basketball players than white. There are more young people than old in sports. I don’t hear anyone complaining.
That said, the Big Tech companies are one of the main supporters of globalization, outsourcing and diversification, so it serves them right.

When Sen. Daniel Inouye died, the leftist, Democratic governor of Hawai’i, appointed his replacement. In a state almost 40% Asian, less than 25% white, and less than 1% Jewish, he appointed Brian Schatz, a Jew, to the seat.

Mark Zuckerberg has been one of the leading proponents of amnesty, giving millions to the cause, and has claimed that illegal immigrants are totally the future of tech and entrepeneurialism in this country. Nor, apparently, does he bring in many Hispanics on H-1Bs.

The interesting thing about the numbers game is that it doesn’t differentiate roles. Liberals probably envision a workplace where a few white males develop the technology, and then 30,000 others keep it running. The idea is that it takes a few bright minds to create the core of it and the rest are tasks that can be “taught” through repetition, memory and following of instructions. They need only a few real brains and the rest can be obedients. This vision seems parallel to what the democrats want for America: a Hillary or Joe Biden (!!!?) in charge, surrounded by a vast sea of “diverse” mixed Caucasian-Asian-African faces.

Leftoids really are off their meds. I heard some BBC radio on NPR late last night. They had a short report about Australia’s new refugee policy. Basically, they’re going to refuse refugees. They had a few quotes from some Australian pol (PM?) to that effect. Then they interviewed a refugee advocate who complained about how horrible this will be for the refugees. Then they went on to the next news item. WTF? They couldn’t get anyone who likes the new policy on the phone? Of course they could. But apparently, the BBC is openly hard-left and doesn’t want to hear from the other side. Right after that, they had a sound bite from another flaky leftoid woman (interviewer and refugee advocate were both women) saying, “the idea of us and them is inherently harmful,” or words to that effect. WTF? I knew the BBC was leftoid, but are they really that openly hard-left? I had no idea.
Well, obviously it is incumbent on white (and Asian) men to make these jobs easy enough for non-whites to do them.
Eventually most programming will be done by prewritten macros because the horsepower of the hardware is so strong that efficiency will not matter. Picking color templates and designing the layout will become of primary concern and any race or either gender can handle that. This is already happening as software like labview makes programming substantially easier than using text based languages such as C++.
Women voluntarily moved into the workforce as jobs became easier and safer. There was no male oppression they had to overcome. Male inventiveness just made male muscle and courage less important. Now the same will happen with IT. Bright males will obsolete other males, including themselves to a large degree, by making everything easier. Of course we will get no credit for it. Women and minorities will still complain because complaining is effective and they are the experts in that field.
The Apollo mission workforce should have reflected the world race demographics because everyone in the world can look up at the moon.

I generally visit Facebook no more than every other week or so. My daughter believes it’s because I’m old and not technologically savvy, but in fact it’s my way of punishing them for their appalling lack of diversity.

In Silicon Valley, every black and hispanic who can stagger through college and has 2 brain cells to rub together is hired by a tech firm. Usually they are in HR, marketing or somewhere else non STEM. The whites found and run the company while the asians do the coding.

An odd diversity side note. I was just recently at the Venetian casino in Las Vegas, and I noticed that nearly all of the table dealers were suddenly Asian: Chinese or something. And I mean just about ALL of them. Casino dealer used to be a very white gig. I don’t know if this is the case in other casinos.
The Venetian has a counterpart casino in Macau, China, so maybe they train them there and import them? Is it to service the large numbers of Chinese in the casino? Well there’s lot of Russians too, but I didn’t see too many Russian looking dealers.

Nevada’s economic and educational stats are absolutely horrific – near the worst rates in the US in health insurance coverage, foreclosures, high school dropouts, and unemployment. I can’t possibly imagine it needing to import card dealers from abroad.

62 and 63. Yes, but this shift to Asian dealers was within the last year. It wasn’t like that before. Just wondering if anyone knew if this caused some kind of fuss in Vegas, or did the white dealers just roll over and take it, like usual.

It has also been mentioned that the under-representation is, in part, the result of massive age discrimination facilitated by H-1B abuse: companies simply get rid of older, more expensive Whites and replace them with H-1Bers. I suspect it is a bad thing, overall, for American blacks who are ambitious, to have AA and the desire of their employing organization to have some smart, competent blacks in high profile positions right away. Because this means you have the smartest and most competent blacks put into these figurehead roles instead of being left to climb the ladder and gain experience and such. Global director of diversity probably pays well, but that’s not someone who’s going to be involved in making any real decisions about the product or in innovating much.
I am amazed that Steve hasn’t brought up AMC’s new show, Halt and Catch Fire…they are busy shoehorning women into “genius” role’s so everybody feel’s all warm and fuzzy.

Agree. White women are at the top of the Identity Foodchain — they soaked-up the lioness’ share of AA, ‘legal’, and extra-legal goodies the past forty years. They are the driver and foundation of the modern Market Economy — vast Social Status material consumption by privileged white females. The delight of the planet’s megamillionaires!
After that … comes fems-of-color, then black guys, and then, well, you. Permanently outta the Civil Rights loop. Cause you had yours already.
The strategy obviously worked — conquered the western world in less than one generation. White females expanded and consolidated control by co-opting and manipulating a sub-set of white males … the enablers and servers of New America. Mostly subjugated married guys with nice comfy lives. So, as usual, there is a large element of inter-group betrayal that facilitated the larger disaster.
