From CBS News:

Meet the man behind a third of what’s on Wikipedia

CBS NEWS January 26, 2019, 12:18 PM

Steven Pruitt has made nearly 3 million edits on Wikipedia and written 35,000 original articles. It’s earned him not only accolades but almost legendary status on the internet. …

Still living with his parents in the home he grew up in, Pruitt has always remained true to his interests.

“I think for a long time there was an attitude of, ‘That’s nice, dear. The boy’s crazy. I don’t know why he wastes his time, the boy’s crazy,'” Pruitt said of what his parents think of his volunteer gig.

That may have changed when Time magazine named him one of the top 25 most influential people on the internet, alongside President Trump, J.K. Rowling and Kim Kardashian West.

How much money does he make from his work? None.

“The idea of making it all free fascinates me. My mother grew up in the Soviet Union … So I’m very conscious of what, what it can mean to make knowledge free, to make information free,” he said.

Pulling from books, academic journals and other sources, he spends more than three hours a day researching, editing and writing.

Even his day job is research, working in records and information at U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

So that’s why Ravi Ragbir is still here: there have been Wikipedia articles to write!

… “The last statistic I saw was that 17.6 percent of the biographical articles on Wikipedia area about women, on the English Wikipedia I should say,” Pruitt said. “It was under 15 percent a couple of years ago which shows you how much we have been able to move the needle.”

How does he celebrate that victory? “Write another article, make another edit.”

But of course, by writing more articles for free, he’s lowering the percentage of articles written by women.

Unless and until you are an editor those edits don't mean shit, and maybe not even then. Your conservative edits will likely disappear before you wake up the next morning.

I once tried adding some pretty damning statements on immigration amnesty by a local politician. They were almost immediately deleted (by an editor, not a competing reader) as being "unnecessarily specific" - as if too much specificity was somehow a problem for a site that has lengthy articles on minor cartoon and sitcom characters.

I don't discourage anyone from trying, but I hope you aren't easily discouraged.

Everyone of any political persuasion should be able to agree that an 85 year old who has been on the court for 25 years and can't even hold her neck up should be removed from the bench if she lacks the sense and integrity to retire. I get that the left doesn't want Trump to appoint her replacement, but I don't think future generations will judge her or her supporters kindly.

Don't count on it. The mindset embodied by this man is exactly what women value least (except, perhaps, in a culture like China, to a small extent). Related : Serial killers get love letters by the hundreds, doubly so if the serial killer killed young women.

He might, however, get a tech billionaire to contact him and offer him a salary. That has happened before to people who contributed a lot of content to the Internet for free. The Khan Academy guy made his videos for a couple of years before Bill Gates noticed him and made sure he got some recognition, a salary, and a budget to hire a few people.

I doubt he's someone who cares much about carnal pleasures, let alone romance. Presumably, his mother fulfills all the feminine roles he may want filled in his life. Perhaps when she dies he will regret his life choices, but maybe not even then.

Abbie Hoffman referred to defecation as "taking a Nixon" in the 1970s. I can remember hearing that a decade later from people with no particular hatred or brief for Nixon, it was just a 'cute saying'.

Similarly leftist shows have put in dozens of thse little terms, and defined a lot of our thinking.

  24. Wikipedia & Google Folie à Duh?

A weird internet journey taken in the past couple of weeks or so made manifest some (certainly well-known) limitations of search engines, as well an odd “error” in a Wikipedia entry.

Steve Sailer had recently referenced the vast influence of Herodotus. I mostly skipped classes in university and have scarcely read a book since then, but, given a callow gee-war-is-cool-college mindset during mostly wasted years had remembered an account of a confused night battle during the Athenian invasion of Sicily (knowledgeable folks have already guessed where some of this is going) and being not entirely dull-witted had guessed correctly decades ago that it was the basis for these famous lines of Matthew Arnold’s “Dover Beach” –
“And we are here as on a darkling plain
Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,
Where ignorant armies clash by night.”

    – not sure of how I knew that it was also behind the title of Norman Mailer’s “Armies of the Night.” It seemed promising after Sailer’s post to refresh the squash regarding Anthony Hecht’s “The Dover Bitch” for some clever-clever comment about said bitch’s relative lack of hotness.

The disaster which befell the Athenians gets mentioned from time to time by columnists with respect to various current events.

Googling badly with “Herodotus” gave many results with “does not include Herodotus” until at last finding an old copy of “The Portable Greek Historians: The Essence of Herodotus, Thucydides, Xenophon and Polybius” copyright 1959. None of the earlier returns had anything like “Do you mean *Thucydides*?” His work was not easy to skim through and one wonders just how the long-winded speeches were recorded or remembered – well, at least for one who didn’t remember the gist of the little vademecum’s* brief “Introduction.”

    * Vademecum -should stop overusing that word, but the following tends to confirm that it was the brand name of a toothpaste in the fam many years ago.

    https://merchdope.com/youtube-stats/

-Back to the “Bitch” – one result lacked the final line with its brand of perfume. Going back to the basic Wikipedia Dover Beach entry revealed
“So there stood Matthew Arnold and this girl
With the cliffs of California crumbling away behind them…”

    – truly a WTF?!? moment.
Using the link provided in that same Wiki entry
    http://plagiarist.com/poetry/2409
confirmed that the actual lines were
“So there stood Matthew Arnold and this girl
With the cliffs of England crumbling away behind them,”
Was that the result of a “Freudian slip”? Did the Wiki author have an Oedipal Jocasta (the mommy wifey dearest) California complex?
Or was he trying to sneak one past whatever Wikipedia has for editing? Is he smirking at the world?
iSteve readers are ‘umbly beseeched not to contact Wiki in this matter given that it seems hilarious in an ISteve-y California way.

The more intelligent among black men contribute to Wikipedia in substantial numbers.

Women, by contrast, contribute almost nothing. The 15% figure bandied around masks a qualitative gaps. Women tend to contribute to articles about celebrities, soap operas, etc. They even write "I think the episode was not good, and I gave it a bad review" in Wikipedia.

By contrast, an article about a subject within Astronomy has zero female contributors, and it is evident from the professional, tight language.

Those are controlled by leftists, so I wouldn't know (or care).

More importantly, Infogalactic's model isn't "conservative Wikipedia", it's "Wikipedia if Wikipedia was run by competent people". That's an important difference, and the reason I don't shill for Gab or Minds or the latest flavor of the month.

We need alternative platforms, but they also have to be worthy of our investment.

The number of people here advocating, apparently sincerely, that the best thing a young right-wing white guy can do is provide free labor for an institution that hates and actively suppresses him, is astonishing and sad. In 3 years, they've learned nothing at all. These institutions can't be reformed because they are zombies animated by leftism, and even if you succeeded in taking one over, all you'd be left with is a corpse.

Which male POC specifically complained about this guy? You need to provide an example, otherwise your title is selling a falsehood.

Wikipedia contribution work is very gender-divided, but not race-divided to nearly the same degree. Black men who are articulate enough to contribute quite a bit, and value others who do.

I once tried adding some pretty damning statements on immigration amnesty by a local politician. They were almost immediately deleted (by an editor, not a competing reader) as being “unnecessarily specific” – as if too much specificity was somehow a problem for a site that has lengthy articles on minor cartoon and sitcom characters.

Start with non political edits (make sure you register. Doesn't even require an email to do so) and small corrections. Do a few of these a week, and after 6 months move on to controversial topics.

In the mean time, you can also support others who make controversial edits.

The more intelligent among black men contribute to Wikipedia in substantial numbers.

Women, by contrast, contribute almost nothing. The 15% figure bandied around masks a qualitative gaps. Women tend to contribute to articles about celebrities, soap operas, etc. They even write “I think the episode was not good, and I gave it a bad review” in Wikipedia.

By contrast, an article about a subject within Astronomy has zero female contributors, and it is evident from the professional, tight language.

The Constitution speaks of Federal judges having life tenure "during good behavior", but the only mechanism for removing judges is impeachment by Congress. The impeachment clause states that the only possible grounds are "Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors". There is no mechanism for removing judges for having weak neck muscles or even for being mentally confused.

This is an old problem and has never been addressed. Here is John Dean writing about it in 2001:

Both sides in this debate make good points, but personally I concur with Cato: it’s better to fight for the big platforms that everyone knows and uses than invent new platforms that will never get traction… if they’re even allowed to do so at all (see: Gab, Hatreon, etc)

It might be the same thing that hooks young people with social media to get likes and retweets. I was in a coffee shop the other day listening to some 14-16 year olds talking to each other while each stared at his phone. They were each discussing their viewership numbers on youtube. I did not get the impression that they cared about being stars so much as they just wanted to have higher numbers.

How has Conservapedia been doing lately? As well as Free Republic?

Those are controlled by leftists, so I wouldn’t know (or care).

More importantly, Infogalactic’s model isn’t “conservative Wikipedia”, it’s “Wikipedia if Wikipedia was run by competent people”. That’s an important difference, and the reason I don’t shill for Gab or Minds or the latest flavor of the month.

We need alternative platforms, but they also have to be worthy of our investment.

The number of people here advocating, apparently sincerely, that the best thing a young right-wing white guy can do is provide free labor for an institution that hates and actively suppresses him, is astonishing and sad. In 3 years, they’ve learned nothing at all. These institutions can’t be reformed because they are zombies animated by leftism, and even if you succeeded in taking one over, all you’d be left with is a corpse.
