From the New York Times:

Boys in ‘Make America Great Again’ Hats Mob Native Elder at Indigenous Peoples March

By Sarah Mervosh, Jan. 19, 2019

They were Catholic high school students who came to Washington on a field trip to rally at the March for Life.

He was a Native American veteran of the Vietnam War who was there to raise awareness at the Indigenous Peoples March.

They intersected on Friday in an unsettling encounter outside the Lincoln Memorial — a throng of cheering and jeering high school boys, predominantly white and wearing “Make America Great Again” gear, surrounding a Native American elder.

The episode was being investigated and the students could face punishment, up to and including expulsion, their school said in a statement on Saturday afternoon.

In video footage that was shared widely on social media, one boy, wearing the red hat that has become a signature of President Trump, stood directly in front of the elder, who stared impassively ahead while playing a ceremonial drum.

So a child stood his ground while an adult banged a drum in his face?

Some boys in the group wore clothing associated with Covington Catholic High School, an all-male college preparatory school in Park Hills, Ky., near Cincinnati.

Probably some second cousins of Brett Kavanaugh went there, if you know what I mean.

The school had advertised that students would attend this year’s March for Life Rally, which took place in Washington on Friday. In a letter to parents, the trip was described as an opportunity for students to live out their faith and demonstrate in support of all life “born and unborn.”

In a statement, the Diocese of Covington and Covington Catholic High School condemned the behavior by the students and extended their “deepest apologies” to the elder, as well as to Native Americans in general. …

Of course, that wasn’t exactly the way it happened.

“What is not being shown on the video is that the same youth and a few others became emotional because of the power, resilience and love we inherently carry in our DNA,” another organizer, Nathalie Farfan, said.

See, the aggressive drum-banging adult has good DNA while the self-restrained child has evil DNA. That’s all you need to know these days.

Update: This kind of thing seems to happen to this “Native Elder” a lot. From in 2015:

Native American claims racial harassment by EMU students dressed as indians

By: Dave Spencer
POSTED: APR 22 2015 12:01AM EDT

An Ypsilanti man says he was trying to teach a few students dressed in American Indian theme party about respecting Native Americans.

Not long afterward, Nathan Phillips said that an interaction with party-goers and students turned ugly.
Nathan Phillips says he was out for a noon walk on a Saturday in mid-April. He walked by a home where he saw Eastern Michigan University students dressed as Native Americans.

“They had little feathers on, I was just going to walk by,” Phillips said. “A group of them said ‘Come on over, come here.'”

He says he walked over to the fence and saw roughly 30 to 40 students involved in a theme party.

“They had their face painted,” Phillips said. “I said what the heck is going on here. ‘Oh we are honoring you.’ I said no you are not honoring me.”

It was a statement he says they took offense to.

“Then started whooping and hollering,” he said. “I said that wasn’t honoring, that was racist. Then at that time, it really got ugly.”

Phillips says he was bombarded with racial slurs.

“(They said) ‘Go back to the reservation, you blank indian,'” he said.

One student, he says, threw a beer can at him.

Nathan Phillips appears to surface in the media quite regularly. For example, here’s a video by some Scientologist called Skrillex that has 380 million views. It appears to star Phillips in a completely non-cliched role as the wise tribal elder. Warning: this music by Skrillex sounds as awful as you’d expect from how the name “Skrillex” sounds. It sounds like the B side of a 1979 Clash single. Didn’t musical styles used to change?

Phillips should do a Spanish-language public service announcement in which he cries at all the littering done by Hispanics.

And is he really a Vietnam Vet? When was he born? Wasn’t he born in 1955, which means he didn’t turn 18 until 1973, and the U.S. got out of Vietnam in the winter of 1973, when he’d still be at best in boot camp. (On the other hand, lots of guys are said to have joined the military before their 18th birthday. So, maybe …)

Granted, the concept of a “Vietnam Era Vet” can be pretty expansive. My cousin was in the military in the late 1960s, but instead of being sent to Vietnam, he served as a typist in a NATO headquarters in Venice, Italy. He commuted to the office each day in a gondola as if he were Don Giovanni. But he’s still a Vietnam Era Vet.

  5. Tough call. On the face of it, Protestants would get the most hate for the usual WASP-related reasons. But, the upper crust Protestants basically are the white leadership of the progressive movement, learning about intersectionality starting at a very young age at Sidwell Friends and so forth. So, I’m going to say Catholic schoolboys get the most ire for just being too small-minded for the luminaries of the NYT, parochial even.

I posted about this awhile ago but I think American Jewish attitudes towards Catholics can be broadly subdivided into two groups:

    1. Those who see Catholics as like-minded plucky upstarts unfairly held down by a mediocre WASP establishment. They may even find some of the more stereotypical elements of blue-collar Northeastern Irish Catholic culture to be worthy of emulating (think the young Jewish DA in Bonfire of the Vanities). Matthew Weiner I suspect is of this type (Peggy being the closest thing Mad Men had to a proper heroine).

    2. Those who see Catholics as obnoxious ill-bred interlopers and probably crypto-fascists as well. These types, not coincidentally, tend to see WASPs as aspirational figures rather than objects of derision. Diane Feinstein is clearly of this group (she can barely contain her scorn most of the time) and I suspect Paul Krugman is as well.

As far as the NYT goes, everybody who works there is either a WASP, crypto-WASP or a WASP wanna-be.

We are all teachers. Someone taught these men to hate. Someone can try to teach them tolerance.

Nice piece of postmodernist invective by Anonymous. Combines both anti-individualism with viciousness.
    * Anti-individualism (individual is created by the group): People are taught their basic emotions, and basic emotions can be re-taught. People are not even a blank slate, people metaphorically come with a reset button and a DVD player that can be used to load new software. But that only happens if “we all”, the teachers, press the reset button)
    * Viciousness: Attempts to destroy teacher who was trying to indoctrinate students to believe that all people and cultures are only trivially different.

The use of a quote from Sam Vinograd is a nice touch also — avoids personal responsibility by Anonymous while seeming to cite an authority — a CNN TV personality.

  32. @a

They should have screamed “Baby killer!” at him.

Yeah, that was a big one in its day. Many implications, utterly vicious. Typical Postmodern Leftist.

And I think that was your excellent point: they haven’t changed much.

But that suggested a related question: is it worthwhile to get inside the Postmodern Left’s propaganda and use it against them?

As I see it, attempts to work within the Postmodern Leftist conceptual framework cannot succed. Here’s a story, maybe apocryphal, but it fits in to Stalin’s actions after Lenin’s death [1]

Supposedly Lenin’s widow spoke with Stalin after Lenin’s death, and said that she would publicly opposed Stalin and use the authority of Lenin’s testament and her status as Lenin’s widow to destroy Stalin’s bid for leadership _unless_ Stalin immediately withdrew from the leadership conference.

What happened next shows the futility of giving the opposition an opening when the opposition controls media.

    Stalin says
“That might have worked if you had acted immediately, but now I’m warned. If you try to organize any public appearance, then I will produce Lenin’s real widow.
State media will say that Lenin hated you, and acted otherwise only for the Party’s sake. He secretly divorced you, and married another woman. We will produce this woman, who will endorse me. You will be denounced as an enemy of the Party.
Or, you can remain as Minister of Education and further the revolutionary cause to which you have dedicated your life.”

So: No reference can be made to the past. The Postmodernist view is that there is no past, only history which is written (and re-written) by the winners. It’s the old HeeHoo argument from _1984_: “Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.”, so the Left controls history as a first step after controling the present (march through the institutions yields both control of history and control of police, giving _1984_ levels of power. Hypothetically, at least. Note that the USSR isn’t here anymore.).

A further note: Postmodernism is fairly recent, but it is part of something called the Counter-Enlightenment, which was also anti-realist and anti-individualist, but was not a belief held by embittered Marxists after Marxism was discredited c.a. AD 1955. Its most famous early advocate was Kant, who wanted to confine reason to make room for faith [2], and most widely held in Eastern Europe. Stalin, a former divinity student turned Eastern European revolutionary, would have been strongly exposed to Counter-Enlightenment thought.

So: Chopping logic with an SJW is fruitless. Better to simply point out the viciousness of what effectively is a psychotic break.

and ask whether the viewer wants to be ruled by people like that.

  38. All joking aside, this is a genuinely terrible situation. There are other videos that show the incident is the exact opposite of what is being reported: the Indians approach the kids, the Indians are verbally aggressive towards the kids, and the group isn’t even aware of what is going on. I haven’t heard any chanting (‘Build the Wall’. etc) though I haven’t heard or watched every moment of the video.

Its terrible in a minor way because the internet crowd is up in arms-on blog sites, on chat rooms, and so on.

But its genuinely terrible because the mainstream media isn’t correcting it. When the Washington Post and New York Times have access to video disproving their own spin of events, and choose to ignore it-with regards to destroying an anonymous 15 year old kid’s reputation-it is really really disturbing. We would all expect NYT/WP to do that to Trump, or Paul Ryan (all is fair in love and war -and politics). They are literally destroying the public reputation of a random teenager, for no good reason whatsoever.

For almost the entire 20th century Catholics were portrayed in the popular culture as the “good Christians,” while Protestants, when portrayed at all, were generally bigots and nativists.

For instance, I suspect positive portrayals of Catholic priests in American movies up to the 90s or so runs at least 10:1 positive portrayals of Protestant ministers.

I think this all changed as a result of the largely self-inflicted Catholic sex abuse wound of recent decades.

    You have:
A group of loud, angry, combative Black-Activist Street Preachers that yell at and heckle everyone.
A group of Native Americans there to promote their cause, banging on war drums and doing large circle dances.
A group of high school boys wearing MAGA hats who congregate on some stairs and do a version of either a Viking dance or Maori haka dance (both are done in sports settings and the fad spread to high schools).

First hour and eight minutes consists of the street preachers getting into verbal squabbles with various comers who have gotten tired of their schtick. A representative example is at 36:20 where they argue with a fed-up Native American man and call him an Uncle Tomahawk.

At 1:08:30 the high schoolers are in the midst of congregating.
At 1:12:30 the Indians march over banging the drums.
All the meanwhile the Street Preachers are yelling at everyone.

This is all a big nothing. It’s a chaotic carnival-like atmosphere similar to college sports fandom where, the night before a Bowl game, the schools have competing pep rallies and vie to be the loudest, invade the other’s space, and just generally annoy/insult one another.

  53. @Moral Stone

Yep they like uppercrust and middle class Protestants because they have been re-educated by now and also their culture is pretty pliable/malleable…for lack of a better term. Aren’t as many deep roots and they aren’t as into the arts- they are happy to live their atomized existence and make money.

Lower class Protestants (virtually all evangelicals at this point) the media gatekeepers either don’t think about or they make fun of. Also I suspect over time even the evangelicals will be rehabilitated in their eyes as the movement becomes increasingly multicultural (tons of Hispanics especially have left Catholicism for charismatic churches).

Catholics are the wealthiest, most educated whites who haven’t been sufficiently reconstructed yet. Also they are more likely to enter a career field related to the arts, making them a source of annoyance for the Jews and PoCs who prefer to dominate cultural expressions these days.

    1. He enlisted and lied about his age
    2. He served in Vietnam post withdrawal while assigned to duty at an embassy or consulate
    3. He was assigned to Vietnam Defense Attaché Office (the rebrand of MACV post withdrawal)
    4. He participated in the 1975 evacuation in some manner

Under law, a service member must have served 180 days in country to receive recognition as a Vietnam Vet. Though I imagine there are rules applying to navy personnel who served aboard ship in the Vietnam area and pilots based in Guam or Thailand.

    Fun Fact
I served in the Army with a Sergeant who spent 12 months in Thailand, hauling munitions from a port to an Air Force base. Because of the Status of Forces agreement, American soldiers could not operate vehicles off base. The US paid the Thai Royal Army for Thai soldiers to drive the trucks from the port to the base front gate. At which point the Sergeant would take the wheel and make the delivery.

She had boys regularly sent to the principal’s office for what she called “disrespectful non-verbal communication” and this included looking at her, not looking at her, averting your eyes, not averting your eyes, inappropriate smiling, frowning, pretty much everything up to breathing. She was untouchable of course.

I think that we’re on a glide path to this sort of indictment of perceived white non-deference in our browned American future. Despite the resistance, Political Correctness has been so successful in forcing self-censorship (by whites, naturally) that the next frontier is to police the sincerity with which people outwardly defer to non-whites and Jews and to impute forbidden thoughts that they haven’t uttered (but they must have thought judging by their facial expressions) as a pretext to punishment. Don’t be the first to stop clapping during one of Premier Stalin’s speeches – that sort of thing.

I’d venture a guess that these kids (there were some non-whites from the high school that have escaped notice by the critics) didn’t know that it was “Indigenous People’s March” judging by the half dozen marchers, and didn’t know what to make of this guy wailing on his buffalo skin drum out of nowhere. How do you suppose the behavior of these teen boys stacks up to the daily behavior of the, er, “indigenous” youth of Washington DC on a day to day basis? Yet this non-event merits coverage in the “paper of record?”

White Catholics have more or less assimilated and don’t have the same sort of ethnic hangups (although of course there are some, e.g. the Northern Ireland issue in the 1990s). I haven’t ever heard a Catholic (and I am one) complain about grandpa being excluded from the country club, for example.

Consider: around 1870 or so there were periodic conflicts over Bible-reading in schools. Catholics were against these practices because they did not want to read from the KJ version. But by the early 1960s, when the courts banned prayer and Bible-reading in schools, there was a different reaction: Catholics were basically against the decision (the Archbishop of Boston Richard Cushing said after the Engel decision that “the communists are celebrating today”). Jews were uniformly in support, to the point where America magazine controversially editorialized about it.

And the fact that these kids were in DC for the March for Life shouldn’t be neglected. A great deal of the Jewish support for abortion is driven by the fact that opposition to abortion is mostly associated with white Christians.

Gail Collins is from Cincinnati and went to one of the Catholic girls’ high schools there and went on to Marquette. Collins sounds like Irish Catholic rather than the dominant German Catholics there. (When i was–as was often the case–in trouble, Father Felix, old school Cincinnati German, would tell my mom–Anglo-Germanic–that it was the Irish in me.)

I think we can put Collins–at least by background–in the Catholic column. WASPs are *really* thin on the ground at the NYT.

One of the notable things about modern America is that while there are old Yankee WASPs ambling around the corridors of power here and there, flyover country Protestants–essentially the nation’s core–are really absent from a whole lot of elite instutions of the nation they built. (Ex. the Supreme Court.)

One would think one would want some “diversity” of background and opinion, but apparently that’s not who we are.

Not really discussed on iSteve is what happens when the old Jewish and WASP ascendancy is replaced by non-Whites such as Ilham Omar, Louis Farrakhan, and Ocasio-Cortez? Not to mention the Indian ascendancy at Google (Sundar Pinchai), Microsoft (can’t even spell the name), and so on.

What happens when the ENTIRE leadership managerial class of the corporate, political, social, and entertainment world is either Black, Hispanic, Indian, or Muslim?

It is now defacto but not dejure illegal for any White person, especially a White male, to show anything but groveling deference to any non-White who shows up. See Sanders, Bernie, and the BLM ladies at his rally. White people are unlikely to be made legally slaves but the legal dejure codification of being serfs and inferior in every way in terms of actions and deference is to be made legal. That is the whole point of the video.

You might argue that the most valuable resource is the forced labor of High IQ Whites for various non-Whites. A Wakanda based on White serfdom. This is essentially what we are rapidly heading towards. Not the least of which is that non-Whites are only united in HATE HATE HATE of Whites particularly and especially White men.

Nancy, Chucky, etc. won’t live forever. They won’t hold power forever. The future is Speaker Omar, or Speaker Cortez, and President Harris, and Louis Farrakhan as poet laureate of the US, and laws as in Edo Japan that require serfs (White males ) to bow down before their superiors. And likely labor in serf like conditions to provide the goodies and gibs for their non-White masters. Kevin Michael Grace has noted that the time of Whites as the compromise candidates for non-Whites who lacked the numbers to over-ride other non-Whites is over. Increasingly all candidates are Sikhs, or Jamaicans, or Haitians, or whatever.

A non-White leadership class fractured by racial conflicts (Blacks vs. Hispanics vs. Muslims vs. Chinese) will find unity only in joining together to enserf White males for more gibs shared out among them. It is the only way to create unity — Black, Brown, Muslim, Indian, Chinese joining hands to make White men the enserfed money machine for top-down gibs patronage. Big Man politics writ racially.

  93. A complex question (not sure it’s worth too much discussing…). Judaist Jews don’t hate/loathe WASPs (much). These are both secular moneyed groups, generally rational, modern & “progressive”.

They, at some deep level, loathe Evangelical Protestants- despite politics & the latter’s Israelophilia- because Evangelicals are pre-modern, fiery & fundamentalist aliens.

As for Catholics, this too is mixed: Jews marry Catholics at much higher rate than Protestants; also, most Catholics stand for working-class marginalized Ellis Island immigrants like Jews.

Just, spiritually & historically, Catholicism is- liberal pope & weakening of faith notwithstanding- completely alien to Judaism. It is, unlike Protestantism, the oldest magnificent continuous cultural institution (never mind China which is alien & marginal in influence); it is crusader & medieval & Inquisitorial, hence anti-Jewish; it is attractive in its supernaturalism & visual appeal & sexy perviness straddling centuries.

Finally, there is something aristocratic in Catholicism’s essence, from music to architecture to paintings and literature and whole natural & supernatural culture which makes both Jews & milquetoast WASPs nothing more than successful nouveau riche yokels.

  97. @Bubba

Hands down it is Catholics. Way too much history to delve into here about it though.

    I think it’s complicated.

At the institutional and historical level it’s the Catholics–the unitary Church, uniting all people (i.e. the gentiles) is what the Jews (the Ashkenazi) chaffed against for 1500+ years.

But at the individual level I think the it’s a specific Protestant: the pickup driving, gun toting southern–racist!!!–redneck who is basically an emotional stand in for the Russian peasantry.

If you look through those Pew surveys the people the Jews hate most are not the Catholics but Evangelical Christians–the people who actually have the warmest feelings toward Jews.

That said, I think there are demographic and generational splits here.
    — for previous generations of Jews, a lot of Golfocaust style hate was aimed at the high WASPs, the “white-shoe” law firm crowd. But that generation is mostly dead. Those high WASPs basically tossed the Jews the car keys in the 60s, and the remnant are the white group that goes to Ivy League with the Jews and intermarries with them.

–the “blond fraternity boys” that so animated Sabrina Rubin Erdely probably generated a lot of hate across the spectrum in early generations, but I would guess now it really animates the ugly English major girl types like Erdely, and more Jewish guys–more integrated and sometimes in those fraternities–just don’t get as excited. (Some do, but i’m guessing not most.)

    — the ethnic Catholics were probably not as relatively big a hate target to earlier generations who might have seen them as fellow immigrant upstarts against the WASP establishment. But for the current generation they are just white gentiles–smirking guys in MAGA hats. And the ones who really take their Catholicism seriously are a much harder target–higher cohesion–than the typical white Prot.

We’re got several smart Jewish guys here, it would be interesting to hear what they think about evolving patterns of American-Jewish ethnic resentment.

We condemn the actions of the Covington Catholic High School students towards Nathan Phillips specifically, and Native Americans in general, Jan. 18, after the March for Life, in Washington, D.C. We extend our deepest apologies to Mr. Phillips. This behavior is opposed to the Church’s teachings on the dignity and respect of the human person.

The matter is being investigated and we will take appropriate action, up to and including expulsion.

is pathetic. At minimum act like adults–or at least adults of yesteryear–and say that you do not assume that a small edited video snippet contains all the facts. You can wrap that in all the Christian “dignity and respect of the human person”, but avoid selling out your own students until you know the facts.

Even in the edited video i don’t see anything that’s worth apologizing for. You could say that the high school boys are acting like typical–white (not-violent NAMs)–high school boys. That’s it. To condemn them is to swallow the Jewish-minoritarian\SJW narrative and interpret everything going on as if that’s gospel.

Catholics need to wrest back control of their institutions from the cucks. Natural selection is going on here and the gentile institutions that will actually survive and have a future are those that are willing to stand up to the abuse from Jewish minoritarianism and its fellow travelers.

The last US combat troops left South Vietnam in late March 1973, and it is most likely that no new combat troops were being mustered into South Vietnam later than June 1972. All the plugged-in, morally upright, and upstanding people across the USA (and further afield in the USA’s various cultural satellites), lined up obediently to join in with this racialized/politicized Two Minute Hate against these boys. No one seemed to care about critical inquiry or fact-finding, because Two Minute Hates don’t work like that.

Jews hate Protestants more, for the simple reason that they are the historical population majority group. Seeking to undermine majorities is one of those anti-Semitic tropes that looks truer and truer the more one investigates.

As for Catholics, they and Jews hate each other so much that they vote the same politicians in office, support the same open borders policies, and find themselves displacing Northwestern European Protestants in all American institutions. Nathan Phillips:

Looks like a substantial amount of Amerindian blood, probably above the average for self-identified Amerindians in today’s USA.*

    It’s really a shame for the Red Man that their race’s most famous son-of-the-moment is a fight-picking, rabble-rousing, race-hustling, semi-homeless ne’er-do-well and malcontent.

(By “most famous son-of-the-moment,” I mean as of Jan. 19, 2019, of course, to last for as long as this little Two Minute Hate lasts. And how long will it last? How far will Nathan Phillips’ star rise? Perhaps he’ll end up on the other side as an MSNBC guest analyst for Amerindian issues?)

On that note, it’s a shame that David Yeagley, a bona-fide Amerindian tribal member (though apparently with substantial European blood) and one-time writer for VDARE, is no longer with us. The anniversary of his death is five years ago this March. Here is a VDARE tribute to him following his death.

    David Yeagley (1951-2014) R.I.P.

    * Thoughts on how “genetically Amerindian” those who self-identify as such are today:

On Census 2000, 2.5 million Americans [0.9% of total] claimed to be “Amerindian or Alaska Native” alone; an additional 1.6 million claimed Amerindian plus some other race [0.6%]. Considering this 1.5% together, what is a likely ballpark on European vs. Amerindian ancestral components? I am thinking it could be 60-40 European-Amerindian (excluding the likely Subsaharan component in some tribes).

    – If the 0.9% ‘full Amerindians’ avg. 50% genetically Amerindian
    – If the 0.6% ‘partial Amerindians’ avg. 20% genetically Amerindian
= would equate to 40% Amerindian for the 4.1 million Americans who claimed Amerindian racial background (full or partial) on Census 2000. (I just made up these numbers but they seem plausible; am open to correction if anyone has better numbers, which I doubt exist given the political sensitivity of the matter.)

While I don’t have a good eye for such things to say with certainty, Nathan Phillips sure looks like he exceeds this 40% average, which puts him decently to the right of the Amerind bell curve, i.e., one of the USA’s most-Amerind individuals without any connection to Latin America.

“Political Catholicism” varies by country, for sure, and in the USA varies too by ethnic group, region, and era. But speaking on the whole, I do agree that the Roman church in the USA has been more a force for the Left (that is, for the the incipient “Multicultacracy”) and against the nationalist-Right.

For one thing, that church encouraged a coherent, sustained quasi-ethnic minority-grievance attitude among its members, something the USA had hitherto essentially not known but which it now knows well. (The USA’s political culture is now, it seems to me, almost entirely based on ethnoreligious minority grievance against the majority.)

I see no trace of this in the Kentucky boys (born in the 2000-2004 period). They might as well be Protestants. There is nothing distinguishing them as Catholics. This is a good sign, a sign that the older and unhelpful strains of political Catholicism we see from the Kennedys and Paul Ryan are less and less relevant.

Right. Funny thing, that. I’d have to say that the Left does hate these denomination, and that this is self-referentially true (that is, these denominations, being on the Left, hate themselves). It would seem that this only increases the strength of the alliances in the following way:

    * Denominations hate themselves.
    * Attempt to atone for sin by sacrifice and following the life of Jesus, as per New Testament.
    * Attempt to atone for sin by sacrificing other people (people whom the Left hates).
    * Find that the “march through the institutions” means that they have to limit sacrificing themselves so that they can sacrifice more other people (people whom the Left hates) in what is often called “virtue signaling” but they think of as “preventing sin by punishing sinners”.
    * and therefore end up both rich and virtuous (and psychological messes with few children, but, hey, can’t win ’em all)

In much the same sort of doublethink, I’ve seen it reported that the Imperial Chinese bureaucracy tended towards Taoism while practicing Confucianism or even Legalism. It was their way of being able to sleep at night.

Just a guess, from my limited experience. However, it does fit every member of these denominations I’ve met so far (over several decades).

    From Vogue:

He raised a wooden staff adorned with nine eagle feathers in the air as he addressed his security team, volunteers who had stepped back into familiar roles guarding gates at camp. They were outfitted in head-to-toe camouflage, masked by bandanas printed with the word Resist, and bearing walkie-talkies. “I have a relative here who said he’d lead the way and scout ahead for us,” Phillips continued, his voice breaking. “You know, I’m from Vietnam times. I’m what they call a recon ranger. That was my role. So I thank you for taking that point position for me.”

Welp, I spent some time as a U.S. Navy officer, am pretty familiar with USMC matters and I never heard of a Marine “recon ranger.” “Vietnam times” sounds like he’s maybe fudging “Vietnam-ERA vet.”

It’s possible the reporter misreported what the old crank said about being a “recon ranger.” It’s also possible that Phillips is full of sxxt. I find myself leaning towards the latter. “Lead the way” sounds like Ranger talk, whereas Phillips is claiming USMC, and the above passage strikes me as something a military fraud might say basing his little speech on war movie tropes.

My prediction is that Phillips will claim he never made the “recon ranger” statement and that he never served in Vietnam: was just in while the war was going on, if at all. Might be a Semper Foni.

The elite Catholic universities (Georgetown, ND) have turned hard left. I wonder how much of it dut to left wing Jewish infiltration. I

It has nothing to do with the usual fantasia on these boards. You have several vectors. The most consequential has been the demographic collapse of the religious orders. The decline in the annual number of ordinations to the secular clergy (-55% between 1965 and 2002) was bad enough. You could make adjustments, though, by consolidating physical plant, redeploying manpower from teaching and administration to parish ministry, and off-loading functions onto lay employees and volunteers. Also, the sad decline in attendance at Mass meant there was less demand for the services of priests. The decline in the number of ordinations to the regular clergy was far worse (-90%), and the decline in the number of women professing their final vows was even more severe (-97% in one congregation of which I’m aware). Nothing you could do but shut down apostolates or secularize them. To add to the trouble, often the residue in the orders were deeply corrupt. One wag referred to the charism of the Society of Jesus as ‘single-malt scotch and sodomy’ (when they’re not pushing Marxism).

To add to that, any lay Catholics recruited to the board or to the faculty proved ultimately useless on balance. The Catholic intelligentsia and the church-o-cracy are amply staffed with Vichy Catholics for whom religion is a discourse or a display or a social activity, not something which encompasses either metaphysics or morals. Look at Andrew Greeley’s writings and see if you can locate an affirmation on faith an morals that James Hashcookies Pike would have been unwilling to make. Of course, types like the Greeleys aren’t numerous enough anymore to run anything but parishes and offices in the diocesan chancery or the U.S. Catholic conference (and parishes have no need of intellectuals).

The Berrigan brothers were always political activists in clerical garb, quite abnormal, really. Philip Berrigan was excommunicated in 1973. The young Nancy Pelosi may have been a serious Catholic. There’s no obtrusive indication of it in the lives of any of the others. In our own time, maybe 10% of the population of nominal Catholics sits in the confessional even once a year. (Once a year is obligatory, btw). Paul Ryan may be an observant suburban Catholic, but it’s never had much influence on his political thought (and, truth be told, Catholic Social Teaching is difficult to operationalize).

Wisonsin is doormat, Other-Worshipping, Nordic (“Midwestern Nice,” cf. Minneapolimolia).

Kentucky is larglely piss-and-vinegar, good ol’ boy Scots-Irish; folks value individuality, home-rule, kith, and kin more than the relatively conformist and agreeable Nordics and Teutons of Wisconsin. Kentucky actually adopted an official stance of neutrality during the War of Northern Aggression, only effectively joining the U.S.A. after attempts by the Confederate Army to occupy it for obvious strategic reasons. Even still, a lot of Kentuckians fought for the C.S.A. – a lot.

Thus, although not as historically depraved as Mexinchifornia or Massachusetts, Wisconsin is far and away more relatively so than Kentucky.
