The current Prime Minister of Pakistan is the cricket star Imran Khan. He’s an upper class member of the Pashtun tribe of western Pakistan and Afghanistan. At 6’2″, he’s a half foot taller than look-alike movie star Mark Wahlberg.

  1. Could we just conclude that much of the world is run by the same variety of humans who once inhabited a larger portion of the globe? This type continues to recede into smaller and smaller living spaces, leaving behind legacy rulers like Prime Minister Mark Wahlberg.

  2. Anonymous[346] • Disclaimer says:

Khan is part European, right? Btw, in his Wikipedia profile photo he’s looking like a younger Sir Ian McKellan.

  3. He was married to the lovely Jemima, daughter of James Goldsmith (whose ‘The Trap’ is worth a read), before that he cut a swathe through the upper-class gels of Sussex and before that Worcestershire. I think he found Sussex and its proximity to London to make for more of a target-rich environment.

Years ago, I had the misfortune of managing an office that included some Muslim employees. When one of their holidays was approaching, they of course had to be off work, but they could not tell me ahead of time which day exactly, so I could not plan.

They explained that an imam or somebody had to look at the Moon and decide when the day was right. My reply was that astronomy, something to which their ancestors had contributed, was long advanced to the point that the position of the Moon can be predicted in advance, precisely, even thousands of years ahead.

Their response was a dumb look and something like, “well, the imam still has to tell us.”

    Diversity is Strength.

I’ve read a lot of history because of GMF’s Flashman books. The books are pretty good as history by themselves with the added pleasure of Flashy’s eye witness (from the rear when possible) account’s .
Back in the 80′s I sent a copy of “Flashman and the Redskins” to his publisher in NY . I enclosed a big manila envelope with postage for the return . Some weeks later it came back from GMF with an inscription and a note . He lived on the Isle of Mann and had paid the return postage himself and cut off the section of the unfranked US stamps in the hope I would still be able to use them .
He was everything Flashy wasn’t .

Former vice president Joe Biden appeared to take a step closer on Monday to announcing a run for the presidency in 2020, saying he believes himself to be the “most qualified” person for the job.

“I’ll be as straight with you as I can: I think I’m the most qualified person in the country to be president,” Biden said at the Missoula, Mont. stop on a book tour that has stoked speculation about a 2020 run. “No one should run for the job unless they believe that they would be qualified doing the job. I’ve been doing this my whole adult life, and the issues that are the most consequential relating to the plight of the middle class and our foreign policy are things that I have – even my critics would acknowledge, I may not be right but I know a great deal about it,” he said.

“I have two young grandchildren my son left who love me and adore me and want me around. I want to be there to take care of them, so we’ve got to figure out whether or not this is something we can all do as a family,” Biden added. “We’re going to make that decision in the next six weeks to two months, and that’s the basis of the decision

Impeachment is a political act, and the endgame of the Robert Mueller investigation may not deliver the stark evidence that would remove Donald Trump from office. But this week’s activity on the Mueller beat — the guilty plea from Michael Cohen, the pardon-angling from Paul Manafort, the ongoing Austin Powers antics of Jerome Corsi and Roger Stone — is further confirmation that Trump is one of the most impeachable presidents we’ve ever had.

It isn’t just that he’s already implicated in actions (for instance, paying off a porn-star mistress in possible violation of campaign-finance laws) that a hostile Congress might reasonably cite as a reason for impeachment. It’s that the whole Trump operation, now lying exposed on Mueller’s table — the shady business empire, the constant practice of deceit, the dim-bulb hangers-on — screams corruption in a way that few politicians’ circles do. With Trump there is no pretense of respectability or rectitude. There is only the open, shrugging grift.

This shrug makes it hard for his critics to fathom how the Trump campaign ever persuaded anyone that its candidate would actually “drain the swamp.” Some of the liberal fixation with fake news reflects an attempt to explain Trump’s anti-corruption pitch as just a fraud that voters swallowed (or were force-fed by the Russians). And indeed, a portion of Trump’s supporters choose to live the fantasy worlds of Pizzagate and QAnon, where the most impeachable of presidents is as a white knight taking on a fictive ring of pedophiles.

Kahn supposedly would like to create a European-style welfare state in Pakistan. Not happening. Pakistan doesn’t generate the wealth needed for it, and there’s no way the Pakis would put up with the insanely high level of taxes necessary to sustain it. Too many of them are at the poverty level, and they’d revolt if you tried to tax them even more. Pakistan doesn’t have enough millionaires to make up the shortfall, and they’d flee the country and take their businesses with them if most of their income was taxed.

The only way I see out for Pakistan is to make it a working class manufacturing country like China did, but frankly, I don’t see the Paki’s as a people with the innate discipline to work on assembly lines for hours every day like the Chinese. They’re too ADD, impulsive, short-fused, and chaotic. You can skip this stage by making them a well-educated country with white collar jobs, but they’d need someone to create those jobs to support them.

However, the average IQ of Pakistan is 84, right there with Nigeria and Paraguay. They have the same IQ as blacks and Amerindians. There’s no way you can make a middle-class country out of that. The Pakis have had northern invaders from time to time bringing in white genes, but they’re being dumbed down by the same large aboriginal substratum of people who have been living in southern India for tens of thousands of years, and which makes northern Indians look down their noses at southern Indians.

Anyway Khan’s ex wife put up the money for Assange’s substantial bail.

    https://www.theguardian.com/media/2013/feb/06/jemima-khan-julian-assange-wikileaks

In the seven years since he founded WikiLeaks, Julian Assange’s relationships with a number of his former collaborators and supporters have broken down, with each side variously claiming broken promises or bad faith on the part of the other.

On Wednesday Jemima Khan, a former close supporter of Assange’s who stood bail for him while he fought extradition to Sweden over sexual assault accusations, became the latest to speak of becoming “alienated” from the Australian after she executive-produced a film he believes to be “anti-WikiLeaks”.

Khan, who is associate editor of the New Statesman, has written an article for the magazine about losing faith in Assange, saying she has come to believe that he is “undermining both himself and his own transparency agenda – as well as doing the US department of justice a favour – by making his refusal to answer questions in Sweden into a human rights issue”. She suggests he risks becoming like “an Australian L Ron Hubbard”, in a reference to the founder of Scientology.

  92. Imran Khan is a bit of an idiot. Mark Wahlberg would have been a much better pick as prime minister. Still there are entertaining stories about Khan from his playboy days back before he became a weird religious scold.

    https://www.news.com.au/sport/cricket/imran-khan-and-the-sydney-university-maiden/news-story/314f27bd6d69b7cdd34210c881228f30

    Excerpted below:

Khan was considered a notorious playboy during his legendary career and O’Keeffe recalls how the Pakistani great had caught the attention of one glamorous blonde watching on at University Oval.

“She only had eyes for one player and it wasn’t happily married Uni captain Mick O’Sullivan with five daughters — it was the Pakistan all-rounder,” O’Keeffe explains.

Khan was staying at the up market apartment complex The Connaught, overlooking Sydney’s Hyde Park and would zoom around Sydney in a red sports car provided by a sponsor.

Sydney University were defending just 180 on a flat deck and North Sydney was making easy work of the run chase as the lunch break was called.

While Sydney University players were “nibbling nervously on some Sao’s”, Khan had other things on his mind.

“He was waltzing out of the carpark with the blonde into the red sports car and back to The Connaught,” O’Keeffe

North Sydney was well poised for victory. At 3/130, chasing 180, things looked bleak, and University were now without their strike man.

Imran Khan had not returned. Captain O’Sullivan was livid. North Sydney’s score was mounting, in lots of 10 towards the small target. The visitors knew that without the star bowler on the ground, they were a huge chance of victory.

“20 minutes after the break, Imran Khan with the blonde and the red sports car returned, and casually strolls onto the field at fine-leg,” recalled O’Keeffe.

Imran Khan would walk up to his captain Mick O’Sullivan and simply said “I will bowl now,” says O’Keeffe – Khan offering no explanation as to why he was late.

“He bowled the most withering spell of reverse swing ever seen at Sydney University Oval,” O’Keeffe said (and fired his team to a thorough victory).

    It’s “cricketer” not “cricketeer”.

Squash and “field” hockey are big in the subcontinent. Other British sports like soccer and rugby are popular as well but trail behind these.

I once saw ran into Wahlberg at Sunday Mass in Las Vegas and mistook him for the antichrist. What the hell did he do to his eyebrows??

Seriously though, I did run into Wahlberg at Sunday Mass at the church next to Encore. We nodded to each other in silence, mine as a way of saying, “I know your rich and famous and vegas is no place to play it cool but we’re in a church so I’ll just aknowledge you”. His nod said, “THANK YOU FOR BEING THE ONLY PERSON HERE TO RECOGNIZE ME! And for being cool about it. Getting mobbed for autographs at Sunday Mass will piss Ted off.”

It’s actually amazingly interesting how when famous actors are out ot their expected Los Angeles habitats (Melrose, Santa Monica, etc) people tend not to recognize them. There’s the makeup and camera difference but it’s also a matter of peoples’ expectations. I once played Poker sitting next to Steve Carrell and I was literally the only person who realized who he was.

Then again, this was at a severe and somber 2/4 Limit game in the Excalibur. When Norm MacDonald played 2/5 NL at MGM all of his tablemates recognized him. At the time I only recognized him as some famous comedian who talked slow and had a nerd following. And of course when Negraneau plays in the Bellagio he gets recognized too. Heck, that guy would get recognized at Sunday Mass in a Catholic Church.

For years blacks have been under a standing order to murder or at least badly beat any white person who says the n-word. This is widely accepted by white people, it is used as a legal defense, and it is so deeply engrained that, in the beginning of the Zimmerman affair, it was a spontaneous article of faith among blacks (despite never having been claimed or reported in the media) that Zimmerman had called his home-invading drug dealer neighbor that word. Thus justice demanded that Zimmerman die. It was recently among the “world-star” type vids that an old white woman who was believed to have said then-word was chased off a city bus by adult black men and beaten.
So, did anyone get a recording of a white person saying the n-word in a can full of black people and not being attacked? Or was every single smartphone in the area not working at the time?

You must be on the prosopagnosia spectrum. DiCaprio and Damon don’t really look alike. DiCaprio played a Jew in Wolf of Wall Streets, for chrissakes! (Well, there may have been other reasons than his Semitic looks, I suppose).

As for facial similarities between Damon and Wahlberg, I suppose there are some, given their shared ethnic heritage. And they were born within a few months and few miles of each other in greater Boston. But Wahlberg has brown eyes and dark hair, and Damon has blue eyes and blond hair. Also, Damon is a lefty upper middle class brat from Cambridge, and Wahlberg is a hard-scrabble, lower middle class race realist from Dorchester, a rough neighborhood of Boston that was turning black as he was growing up.

Jack Nicholson isn’t really an actor in that he can’t pretend to be someone else. He always plays Jack Nicholson, it’s just that people happen to like it.

I know nothing of cricket, but the coach or manager or whatever the bossman the called should have “No, you won’t.” and told him to sit his pompous ass down and benched him for the rest of the match, maybe the season, even if into meant losses. That kind of selfish and arrogant behaviour has no place in sport, especially team sports.

  172. @Mike Pink

Biden should get some credit here. He promises only that he will be “as straight with you I can.” History shows how straight that is….

With the greatly exaggerated exception of whites in Oklahoma, the Dakotas, and a few other hitherto sparsely populated places — who had some small native Indian component — usually not as much as family legend implied — white Americans were NOT hybrids of different races.

What many of us were, and are, is a hybrid of several white European ethnicities. In my case, genetically Northwestern, Western, Southern, AND Eastern Europe. And proud of it.

Until very recently, Americans self-identifying as white or perceived as white were, in fact, over 90% white European genetically, often 95-99%, as widespread use of genetic tests in the last ten years has confirmed. True of both my parents and me and my siblings, including the side that’s largely descended from Italian immigrants.

Let’s see if his favorable name offers any tips on Getting to Denmark:

Denmark Vesey (ca. 1767 – July 2, 1822) was a literate, skilled carpenter….accused and convicted of being the ringleader of a major potential slave revolt…in Charleston, South Carolina

Vesey won a lottery and purchased his freedom around the age of 32

Could this be the elusive solution for Getting to Denmark? Win the lottery.

    (Preferably not the Ghetto Lottery.)

    it’s about managing

Your position is quite sound as a manager. And, as manager, I empathize. I usually just ask for both days off, but there have been situations (due to concerns about lack of coverage) where I pray the Eid prayer before work and head into the office – plenty of people do. If I had, say, only two DBAs who were both Muslim and they both came to me; I would say – “OK Zaid, if it happens on Monday, you can take the day off and Bakr needs to come in after the morning prayer and if it happens on Tuesday, the reverse.”

Now there are managers that are tightwads or just jerks and the people that report to them just have to deal with that. The nice thing is, there is a flexibility when dealing with these sorts due to the differences of opinion.

    explained it better

As you said, the Muslim world was able to calculate very accurate lunar cycles by the time of Ali Qushji if not earlier by men like Ulugh Beg. And, as Ali stated, the difference of opinion is actually about visually sighting the moon or not.

Don’t know much about their situation, but if they are working through four prayer times then they are there from before sunrise to after sunset, so I would definitely cut them some slack. It really shouldn’t take someone more than about 8-10 minutes to get through washing up for and praying. Maybe 12-15 if the walk to the bathroom is long. I used to wash up for prayer and pray by the side of my car in the parking lot for years until I got my own office.

    No fuss, no problems

Agreed. My teachers have told me to be so valuable to one’s workplace that they say; we don’t know what we would do without you. If you are a hard worker, most bosses are more than accommodating.

“The sodomising of boys was treated with jocularity in the famous Newby book”

So was everything else, to be fair. From wiki

“Newby and Carless take on three “very small” horses and their horse-drivers. The cook has to return to Kabul. Despite having horses, they decide to carry 40 pound (20 kg) packs “to toughen ourselves up”. Walking in the heat causes the local people to insult them, and makes their drivers angry, which does not make negotiating their pay any easier. Trying to find their feet, they push themselves hard, and get upset stomachs and blisters. They find a man “with his skull smashed to pulp”; the head driver suggests they should leave the place immediately. Two lammergeiers, carrion feeders, circle overhead…

Carless makes an impressive speech in Persian to convince the drivers to continue into Nuristan. They climb an indistinct track to the pass. They descend into Nuristan: it grows hot. Men run to meet them: they are told they are the first Europeans ever to cross the pass – Newby does not believe this – and are given ice-cold milk to drink. They make camp in a loop of the river to reduce the risk of being murdered in the night. They are visited by two evil-looking men with an ancient Martini-Henry rifle, riding a horse. In the morning they try out the Bashguli grammar on a man; he understands, but speaks a different dialect. Their guide does not let them camp in a grove of mulberry trees full of girls and young women, but chooses a dirty place under a cliff. They undress to wash in the river, discovering how thin they have become. An audience gathers to watch them get up and cook. They reach Pushal, where the headman gives them apricots and tells tales of the old days. They admire the antique rifles of many kinds that the men have. A mullah forbids them to go to a funeral where a bullock is to be slaughtered, in a holiday atmosphere. Instead, they sit under a walnut tree beside a river, with kingfishers, butterflies, hummingbird hawkmoths, and a woodpecker drilling. Newby shakes hands with two lepers. They all have dysentery…

the book is held in extremely high esteem, and is enjoyably comic

Something like 1.5 million homeless Pakistani children (mainly boys) have been sexually abused by street pedophiles.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2739799/Why-millions-Pakistani-children-falling-prey-vicious-paedophiles.html

So Rotherham wouldn’t appear to be an isolated occurrence. The only difference is that in Pakistan, they groom males instead of females. Probably because Muslims keep their women locked at home.

  201. @J.Ross

Imran Khan’s mother is from a southern Afghan-based tribe known as the Ormuri. The Ormuris are endogamous and number only 6,000-10,000. There’s evidence that the Ormuris are originally from Yemen and many centuries ago were brought as warrior-mercenaries to Afghanistan. They remain there today. The Ormuris have produced at an outsized share of elite Cricket athletes.

So if Imran Khan doesn’t look like a typical Paki, there’s your reason why.

  202. @Ali Choudhury

“I thought Northern Europeans were supposed to be smart and logical.”

You assume that these TENS OF MILLIONS are exclusively on your side. Besides, you and I know that you lack the guile and gumption to pull a St. Breivik. The question remains will you be at the front of the line when this impending Civil War commences, or remain on the sidelines yelling “Go Team White”?

This is just my opinion. DeCaprio is the very best man actor today.

He’s good but often miscast and lacking in range. He was very good in WOLF OF WALL STREET but dwarfed by the subject in AVIATOR. But even in WOLF, he was outshone by others who are more memorable: the fat guy, the body builder stud Jew, Asian guy, and etc.

Also, when compared to DeNiro at his peak in 70s and 80s, the deficit becomes obvious.

But he’s very good in certain roles, like in INCEPTION. Problem is he’s better as a receptive than pro-active actor. INCEPTION was good for him because it was about a man whose search was really an escape to get home.
