From the New York Times:

Weinstein’s Complicity Machine

The producer Harvey Weinstein relied on powerful relationships across industries to provide him with cover as accusations of sexual misconduct piled up for decades.

By MEGAN TWOHEY, JODI KANTOR, SUSAN DOMINUS, JIM RUTENBERG and STEVE EDER DEC. 5, 2017

… A master of leverage, Mr. Weinstein parlayed his films into relationships across the worlds of entertainment, politics, publishing and beyond, achieving a stature that at times proved useful in intimidating others and protecting himself. “I know the president of the United States. Who do you know?” Mr. Weinstein, a Democratic fund-raiser, would say during the years Barack Obama was in the White House, adding expletives. “I’m Harvey Weinstein,” he used to say. “You know what I can do.”

In late September, emails show, he was discussing a documentary television show he was working on with Hillary Clinton. He had long raised campaign cash for her, and her feminist credentials helped burnish his image — even though Tina Brown, the magazine editor, and Lena Dunham, the writer and actress, each say they had cautioned Mrs. Clinton’s aides about his treatment of women. Now, Mr. Weinstein exchanged questions about distribution rights for the show. “I am hopeful we can get a good price for this,” Robert Barnett, Mrs. Clinton’s lawyer, replied.

… The Celebrity Shield

If Mr. Weinstein built his wall of invulnerability from many varied bricks, it was covered with a sheen of celebrity. He created stars through his movies, but he also acquired famous friends through his other activities, including in the Democratic politics that dominate Hollywood.

Chief among them were Bill and Hillary Clinton. Over the years, Mr. Weinstein provided them with campaign cash and Hollywood star power, inviting Mrs. Clinton to glittery premieres and offering to send her films. After Mr. Clinton faced impeachment in the Monica Lewinsky scandal, he donated $10,000 to Mr. Clinton’s legal defense fund. Mr. Weinstein was a fund-raiser and informal adviser during Mrs. Clinton’s 2000 Senate campaign, a guest in her hotel suite when she won and a host of an A-list victory party. He was an early backer of both her presidential bids.

Mr. Weinstein’s political activity — he provided consistent support for Mr. Obama as well — boosted his image as a man with friends in high places and close ties to the country’s leading female politician. It is not clear if rumors of his record of sexual misconduct had ever reached them.

But two prominent women said they warned Mrs. Clinton’s team. In 2016, Lena Dunham, the writer and actress, said she was troubled by the producer’s visible presence during Mrs. Clinton’s presidential run, hosting fund-raisers and appearing at campaign events. … So in March last year, Ms. Dunham, a vocal Clinton supporter, said she warned the campaign.

“I just want you to let you know that Harvey’s a rapist and this is going to come out at some point,” Ms. Dunham said she told Kristina Schake, the campaign’s deputy communications director. She recalled adding, “I think it’s a really bad idea for him to host fund-raisers and be involved because it’s an open secret in Hollywood that he has a problem with sexual assault.”

An anonymous commenter asks: “Is Lena Dunham an NY Times correspondent-at-large? How else does she get a favorable story about herself on the flimsiest pretext of “I knew this would happen, I had a feeling”? Alarming to note, the troubling silence from Greg Packer on H’wood sex crime.”

Apparently, Lena is considered the Most Interesting Woman in the World for reasons that escape me. Her only competitor is Hillary.

Earlier, during the 2008 presidential race, Tina Brown, the magazine editor, said she cautioned a member of Mrs. Clinton’s inner circle about him. “I was hearing that Harvey’s sleaziness with women had escalated since I left Talk in 2002 and she was unwise to be so closely associated with him,” Ms. Brown said in an email.

Ms. Dunham said that Ms. Schake seemed surprised at her warning, and that Ms. Schake said she would tell Robby Mook, the campaign manager, Ms. Dunham recalled in an interview.

With the Democratic National Convention approaching in summer 2016, Ms. Dunham said she also warned Adrienne Elrod, a spokeswoman for Mrs. Clinton who was leading efforts with celebrity campaigners. As far as Ms. Dunham could tell, the campaign had not responded to her concerns about Mr. Weinstein. Weeks before Election Day, the producer helped organize a star-packed fund-raiser: an evening on Broadway with Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway and others. …

While Ms. Dunham says she has “an incredible allegiance to Hillary,” and does not believe the reports ever traveled to Mrs. Clinton, she remains troubled by what had happened. “A year and a half ago, on one of the most progressive campaigns in history, this wasn’t a problem,” she said, referring to the allegations about Mr. Weinstein. …

Days after Mrs. Clinton’s election loss, the Clintons had dinner with Mr. Weinstein, Mr. Boies, the lawyer, and their wives at Rao’s restaurant in Harlem, Manhattan.

Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Weinstein began planning a documentary TV show about her campaign. Discussions about the project stretched out for months with her lawyer, Robert Barnett, who emailed with Mr. Weinstein on Sept. 28 about potential European buyers.

In a statement, Mr. Barnett said that “talks were ongoing until the allegations surfaced, at which point all discussions ceased — completely and permanently.”

If Hillary had been elected, Weinstein would be at this moment chasing starlets around the Lincoln Bedroom.

On the other hand, maybe Obama really knew nothing: he sent his daughter to intern under Harvey. You might think that if you are President, you’d have access to a lot of information. But Obama generally gave the impression he didn’t want to know. Look at how he played his 333 rounds of golf with absolute nobodies like his ski bum body man Marvin Nicholson. And he played dozens of rounds with, hilariously, Marvin’s brother.

Yes. It's interesting: in this situation -- lame-duck president's daughter looking to launch a glittering career vs big-time movie producer and political player -- who's doing whom the favor?
    , @whorefinder
    You're assuming Obama cares.

Almost everything strange or weirdly anodyne or detached that Obama does is explained by the fact that Obama just doesn't care that much.

Obama is a lazy man. He's perhaps the laziest man who ever got into the presidency. He's lazy because he just doesn't care about others---only himself and his own pleasure.

During his presidency his underlings called him "No drama, Obama" because nothing seemed to ruffle him. Now, that could be a sign of a good leader keeping a cool head to fix the problem going on---an Eisenhower type.

But look at how many problems Obama didn't do anything to solve---no attempts to calm the race rioting, the attack on our embassy, natural disasters, etc. He did nothing---he went golfing, went to a personal concert, or went on vacation.

Keeping cool in a drama could also be a sign that you just don't give a crap about it. It bores you. You just don't care. So you get lazy about them.

Most people have noticed how extremely narcissistic Obama seemed, even for a president. He put the word "I" into speeches and referenced himself more than any president before. Narcissists are narcissistic to everyone---even family, even their own children. Obama doesn't really care about them, at least to the degree a normal healthy father will, they were just tools to election. Please a rich donor by making his daughter an intern with the donor? Why not? Who cares, it'll help me get re-elected and run defense against attacks.

I imagine that some security people would have checked out Malia's employer and decided there were no red flags. Not his type, not super-attractive, and even Harvey would surely know better.

I think if GWB had sent 17 year old Jenna and Barbara there may have been an issue, though.. wait, what's this?

Secret service agents are probably not so impressed with Weinstein’s celebrity, so probably sexually assaulting Malia would work out badly for him.

    The Sorcerer's Apprentice

wren, you linked this article from Vanity Fair article datelined January 20, 2017: Malia Obama’s Next Move: An Internship with Harvey Weinstein. It's short and well worth reading, as it offers a great "eve of the storm" picture of how New York/Hollywood insiders chose to present Weinstein to their readers:

...Clearly, there’ll be a lot more for [Malia] to learn at the Weinstein Company: Harvey Weinstein is a notorious mover and shaker in Hollywood, a comeback kid whose producing prowess and reputation for waging fierce Oscar campaigns has inspired admiration, envy, and every other emotion on the spectrum. (His former assistant Leslye Headland, now a successful screenwriter and director in her own right, wrote a scathing 2008 play based in part on her experience working for Weinstein, called Assistance.)

Better still is the "scathing 2008 play" link, which is to a February 28, 2012 interview of Ms. Headland by Entertainment Weekly reporter Aubrey D'Arminio.

Back to the topic of the original post, and Weinstein's complicity machine. Today's NYT probably didn't brighten Ms. Headland's day. Fair-use quote of that 2012 article:

Leslye Headland loves Harvey Weinstein—despite having worked as his personal assistant. And he most likely loves her back—even after she penned the play Assistance, about ill-treated young personal assistants at a fictional corporation called the Weisinger Company headed by a demanding, impatient, perfectionist named Daniel Weisinger. At the very least, the Oscar-courting head of The Weinstein Company isn’t holding a grudge against Headland. The indie studio recently purchased her much-loved comedy Bachelorette (which she wrote and directed, based on her own play) at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

The 31-year-old NYU graduate insists that Assistance... is not a tell-all about her former boss, as much as it’s an exploration into the minds of executive assistants... The play asks why they do what they do, and why they often do it for so long (Headland herself worked at Miramax and the Weinstein Company for six years). But just try watching a play in which one downtrodden assistant is shoved out of a gypsy cab — and then run over by the same cab — and not think of the notoriously temperamental [sic] Weinstein...

Entertainment Weekly: It did seem that you were criticizing the assistants for getting stuck in the cycle of abuse more than their boss for inflicting it.

Leslye Headland: Yeah, it’s more about the assistants than the boss...

EW: So, it’s the exact opposite of The Devil Wears Prada.

LH: [While watching the movie,] I was thinking, “This is really stressful.” I was also like, “I could’ve gotten [Meryl Streep’s character] out of that situation.” I was like, “You can get her out of there in the middle of a hurricane. You just have to work harder!” That’s what I mean: It’s that mentality that is more interesting to me than what is the most outlandish thing a boss can ask for.

... I was like, “No, [being an exec. assistant at Miramax is] not that interesting of a world.” As far as it being autobiographical, none of that stuff ever happened. I’m so not afraid of it because it’s not true. It’s all stuff that I made up and thought would be funny. Actually working for Harvey was very educational and cool, but it was pretty boring.

    ...

EW: So do you get the sense that kids graduating from college these days now simply expect to be treated horribly at their first jobs — that they seem to naturally accept the Swimming With Sharks or Horrible Bosses lifestyle?

LH: That it’s a cultural thing now? Absolutely... if you’re leaving school and you’re expecting to be treated horribly, one of the things that [my] play asks is: Why? What do you think about your self? Nick and Nora’s fatal flaw is that they think that it’s just being around this guy that’s going get them what they want as opposed to going out and getting it themselves...

EW: What was your feeling, then, when you found out that The Weinstein Company had bought Bachelorette?

LH: It was so funny and great. When I was working there, that was all I wanted — I would daydream that someday I’ll be making movies and Harvey will buy them and, and he will want to support me. You know, as coworkers essentially. There’s nobody like him. He’s genius. You sit across from him and you’re like, “I cannot believe how brilliant this guy is.” So his interest in me as a filmmaker just makes me feel like I made the right choice to move on.

  4. Did Lena Dunham also warn Hillary that her own husband is a rapist and this is going to come out at some point? Did Tina Brown warn Hillary that because of Bill’s sleaziness with women she was unwise to be so closely associated with him?

Early on in the campaign I recall reading that Dunham expressed concerns about all the corruption associated with the Clintons. I guess somehow she reconciled herself to that and now has “an incredible allegiance to Hillary.”

That's because she shielded the real culprit, for fear of reprisal. Blane Monahan, cousin of infamous UVA alumnus Haven Monahan, went to Oberlin and retains a private army of toned, tanned, and overwhelmingly blonde "fixers." They shut up victims who get too uppity.

A weird thing about Obama as President was he didn't really know many people. He had this tiny circle of wealthy black friends from Chicago, and he avoided socializing with people who might know stuff and tell him gossip. For example, he played golf more than 300 times as President, but typically chose low level staffers to fill out his foursome, like his ski bum body man Marvin Somebody. Obama even played dozens of rounds of golf with Marvin the Ski Bum's brother, a complete nobody. Presumably, Obama liked golfing with guys who wouldn't try to tell him anything important.

Really nice tight essay; very persuasive about highlighting that the reason for the paucity of Obama's accomplishments was his lack of energy and drive. Everything else came so easy to him and when Presidency landed in his lap, cool. No drama Obama; coasting while in office as easily as he coasted into it...

The reports on Weinstein's spying and blackmailing really shook my world.
I'd always assumed that the folks in power were corrupt, but in my naivete I could never have imagined in my wildest fantasies the craven depths of their cunning. Which brings me to the following speculation: What if Weinstein's dirty tricks operations uncovered some truly heinous dirt, that enabled him to "own" the Crooked Clinton Clan? Anybody care to join me in the speculations?
    , @Jim Christian
He is a man of the path of least resistance. He was a good tool of the Left, he was good for MIC, he was good for spooks. As you said, he didn't care about anything but base-level pleasures, his golf, and his brackets, football and celebrities when they turned up. When you don't care, that leaves the mice to scurry about. We doubled down on the wars, the reverse racism, the domestic spying, if we didn't double government, I don't know how. Obama simply didn't care about anything but looking and sounding good.

These days? Late on his manuscripts, even rough drafts, no notes, he's going to have an issue with his publisher. They put up a 60 million dollar advance for his and Moochelle's story. So far, nothing forthcoming. Also, before all the Podesta Brothers' scandals popped up to occupy Podesta, a major gripe and impediment to Podesta's planning for November 2017 going into 2018 was where's Baraq? Available to speak, to campaign? Crickets. Main complaint? Baraq is sitting home, smoking dope and if you want to see him, he's a full-on member at Woodmont CC, you'll find him there.

Sounds to me like he's all finished. Dough in the bank, pension, speech-dough, he got paid 60 million for a book he's never going to write, Moochelle is never around (what's better than that?), but he's low-T so no sexual scandals are coming to this guy. He doesn't even care about sex. Best for him, he has a decent golf course to spend his days on.
    , @slumber_j
Yours is the only explanation that makes sense to me.

Weinstein's behavior was really extremely well-known for a very long time, not only among people in the entertainment industry but among people who merely knew people in the entertainment industry. It's hard to emphasize enough how widespread this knowledge was. (Same with Charlie Rose, by the way.)

It's genuinely inconceivable that President Obama wouldn't have gotten some inkling of Weinstein's MO. So unless Obama was prostituting his daughter, which seems very unlikely, he must not have cared.

Marvin Nicholson is a huge guy. Look at him next to John Kerry, who is 6' 4".

    http://images.glaciermedia.ca/polopoly_fs/1.6820412.1484067083!/fileImage/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/landscape_804/a3-nicholson-jpg.jpg

From his bio at the Washington Post, he seems like a likeable nobody.

Nicholson was born to an American mother and a Canadian father. His father died when he was nine years old, leaving his mother to raise him in Toronto and on Vancouver Island. He had thoughts of getting an MBA and working on Bay Street, the center of Toronto's financial district. Instead, he graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a degree in geography and worked odd jobs - at bars and golf courses - for a few years. "At one point, I was going to be a professional caddy," Nicholson said. "That was my big life plan."

In 1998, he left Vancouver and moved to Massachusetts after falling for a woman. "When I got to Boston, if you asked me who the two senators were from Massachusetts, I couldn't have told you," Nicholson said. He was working at a windsurfing shop in Cambridge, Mass., when he met Kerry, a regular customer (during his 2004 presidential campaign, Kerry was painted as an elite who always blew with the political wind in part because of his windsurfing habit). The two became friends and Nicholson ended up caddying for Kerry for two summers.

Kerry offered Nicholson an internship, but Nicholson declined so he could take a job caddying at Augusta National Golf Club. But in the fall of 2000, he came to Washington and took a job in Kerry's office. In 2001, Nicholson became Kerry's driver, and he joined the Senator's 2004 presidential campaign as Kerry's "body man." "My business card reads: 'Marvin Nicholson, Chief of Stuff," Nicholson said.He kept Kerry well-stocked with pens, reading glasses and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, ordered the Senator's breakfast and hung out with him at night.

Nicholson stayed in Kerry's office after the 2004 election, but when the Massachusetts senator declined to run for president again in 2008, Obama's campaign came calling. During the 2008 campaign, Nicholson worked not as a body man but as Obama's national trip director and scheduler. He managed all of the day-to-day and minute-to-minute activities of the grueling, nearly two-year-long campaign and ensured Obama stayed on schedule.

Nicholson is one of a half-dozen people who keeps Obama on schedule. In addition to a trip director, Obama has a director of scheduling and advance and a small team of other employees who focus on those issues.

"I can't help with policy, I don't do press. When he wants a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, I'm ready." That's how Nicholson described his job for Kerry in 2004. For Obama, he is paid to be organized and keep Obama organized. But "personally, I'm one of the most disorganized people I've ever met," Nicholson says.

Still, both candidates appreciated having Nicholson's skills. He acted not only as a scheduler and sandwich chef, but also as a friend and confidante to both Democratic presidential candidates. His No. 1 job during the 2008 presidential campaign was keeping Obama on schedule, but "he [did] it with class, grace and courtesy," Obama said. "If it hadn't been for him, we would not be where we are."

I'm still waiting to learn if all of those alleged Obama family ties to the Deep State were real and instrumental in getting him into the White House.

When Trump won, he seemed pretty magnanimous towards Hillary and Obama, but if he survives all of this FBI crap, I hope he is going to take a hard look at what is going on.

For instance I think I saw that Brennan was part of instigating the Russia probe, and had recently read that when Brennan accessed the passport files, it was not to clear anything in Obama's file, but rather it was to do something in his mom's file. What she was doing in Pakistan is a question that isn't often asked.

Why Brennan was messing around in Obama's mom's passport file before the election and how Obama made him director of the CIA later would be good subjects for Trump tweets.

If he can get through these endless stasi investigations.
    , @Pericles
Obama was a good deep state figurehead. I assume the do-nothing former academic quickly realized he was out of his depth after the first few failed public forays and after he came into contact with the sharks who had been doing this as a career. After that it was mostly the reading of teleprompters.

As you have mentioned, he seems to be an introvert. So getting away from it all was probably more important than glad-handing.

Just to spare people a Google search, links not safe for work:

In 1978 Pierre Matisse donated the painting to the Museum of Modern Art in memory of his late wife Patricia. However, four years later, just before the opening at MOMA of a small installation devoted to the Balthus works owned by the museum, an important trustee happened upon The Guitar Lesson and was so shocked by it that in the end the painting had to be returned.
    https://sgtr.wordpress.com/2012/02/23/balthus-guitar-lesson/

And yay Wikipedia, part 123948 (also NSFW):

One of the most notorious works from his first exhibition in Paris was The Guitar Lesson (1934), which caused controversy due to its sadistic and sexually explicit imagery. It depicts a young girl arched on her back over the lap of her female teacher, whose hands are positioned on the girl as if to play her like a guitar ...

Balthus is just a text book example of the Jewish Ordeal of Civility. His work looses its ability to shock or harass once one is aware of what is going on.

Likewise the Weinstein scandal does not shock those who are red pilled about the JQ.

French writer Alain Robbe-Grillet (whose books are unreadable), a self-confessed lover of young barely pubescent or prepubescent girls, said in an interview that when he first met Balthus, the painter was living with 12 years old Laurence Bataille, daughter of the famous philosopher and anthropologist Georges Bataille, himself a pervert who dabbled with occultism.

Really nice tight essay; very persuasive about highlighting that the reason for the paucity of Obama’s accomplishments was his lack of energy and drive. Everything else came so easy to him and when Presidency landed in his lap, cool. No drama Obama; coasting while in office as easily as he coasted into it…

The reports on Weinstein’s spying and blackmailing really shook my world.
I’d always assumed that the folks in power were corrupt, but in my naivete I could never have imagined in my wildest fantasies the craven depths of their cunning. Which brings me to the following speculation: What if Weinstein’s dirty tricks operations uncovered some truly heinous dirt, that enabled him to “own” the Crooked Clinton Clan? Anybody care to join me in the speculations?

I mean, Marvin Nicholson would seem like a pretty useful guy to have around as a subordinate who is also kind of a friend, but a friend you can ignore or send away when you are busy without him sulking about it, and who isn't wheedling you for favors. He has, I'm guessing, kind of a sidekick personality, like the hero of a cowboy movie's pal.

On the other hand, if you are president it would probably be better for you to use your time on the golf course getting to know important people who work for you or are in Congress or have interesting ideas and let Marvin caddy. Making him your playing partner for 500 or 1000 hours of your White House years is not very productive use of your time.

Do people consider Lena Dunham a reliable/trustworthy narrator? Didn't one of her book had a thinly veiled rape accusation against some guy from her Oberlin days and was denied by many people who were there with them?

HRC should just adopt the "Gretchen Mol Defense." "Mol goes on to say that she had heard similar rumors attached to other actress, and she assumed that they, too, were false." Some people seems to had taken Mol's assertion that she was never alone with Harvey W. in a room as admission of threesome/orgy/bunga bunga parties. So HRC shouldn't say "Since I didn't PERSONALLY shoot Vincent Forster, as rumored, I assume that they, too, were false. I sat on my hands doing nothing because the rumor mongers crying wolf too often. The blood is on their hands. ..."

“a thinly veiled rape accusation against some guy from her Oberlin college days and was denied by many people who were there with them?”

That’s because she shielded the real culprit, for fear of reprisal. Blane Monahan, cousin of infamous UVA alumnus Haven Monahan, went to Oberlin and retains a private army of toned, tanned, and overwhelmingly blonde “fixers.” They shut up victims who get too uppity.

Marvin Nicholson is this 6'8" slacker in his 30s, a ski bum type with not much in the way of career ambitions, whom John Kerry found working in a sailboarding shop. Kerry wanted to hire him to work on his staff, but Nicholson instead went off to caddy at Augusta National golf club for a year. Eventually, Nicholson became Kerry's "body man," which is kind of like being a Jeeves-like valet, on Kerry's 2004 campaign.

Obama inherited Nicholson from Kerry and Nicholson became his quasi-valet as well, replacing Reggie Love. Nicholson is an excellent golfer and has caddied at the most prestigious country club in the U.S., so he knows all about how to behave on a golf course.

When Obama had a foursome of others, Nicholson would switch over to caddying for the president. But much of the time he was one of the golfing foursome with Obama.

And powerful men just seem to like having the guy around. Presumably he's very chill. In an environment where everybody wants something from Kerry or Obama, Nicholson was refreshing because he was just doing his current gig as the President's caddy and golf partner as another in a long line of interesting experiences he's had without putting much long-term planning into what he'd be doing in five years.

Obama played something like 150 rounds of golf with Nicholson and several dozen rounds of golf with Nicholson's brother. I have no idea who Nicholson's brother is, presumably somebody who could show up whenever the President wanted to fill out a foursome. In other words, Obama chose for his primary golf partners a couple of nobodies with, I'm guessing, calm, unobtrusive personalities who will talk about whatever Obama felt like talking about -- probably what was on Sports Center last night.

But all that time spent with the Nicholson brothers, as relaxing as no doubt they are, was a huge amount of time Obama didn't spend with anybody who could tell him anything he didn't know.

In contrast, Dwight Eisenhower played golf with big timers so he could get to know them better.

I guess somehow she reconciled herself to that and now has "an incredible allegiance to Hillary."

On the bright side, we can add Balthus to our list of Leap Day babies, along with Rossini, Tommy Dorsey, and Dinah Shore. Dinah's 25th birthday fell last year, as did Balthus's 27th.

If you're fishing in Harvey Weinstein's pond of starlets, I agree Lena Dunham isn't worth even a first look. If you're in the writer's room, which is where she wanted to get noticed (and in New York, not LA)... you're probably dealing with an above-average number of dorky guys who struggle to come up with ideas that don't have to do with bodily functions, only one of whom needed to have an in at HBO. There's a market even for inferior goods out there.

  45. But Obama generally gave the impression he didn’t want to know. Look at how he played his 333 rounds of golf with absolute nobodies like his ski bum body man Marvin Nicholson. And he played dozens of rounds with, hilariously, Marvin’s brother.

My impression of Obama (and I believe yours) has always been that he was essentially an amiable front man for the Democratic wing of the deep state. I think he wanted to be president not because he really had a vision of where he wanted to take the country but rather that he wanted to be president for the sake of being president. He wanted to live the ultimate first X to do X story, basically.

I think his presidency can pretty much be summed up in the photograph of the WH staff during the Osama bin Laden raid. Clearly a bunch of engaged white guys were running the show and Obama was sorta off to the side, a spectator.

That said I actually don’t think he did anything particularly bad, at least compared to LBJ (Immigration bill) or Reagan (amnesty.) Race relations went sour during his presidency, but that wasn’t because of something he did, but rather what he was.

We had eight years of a black president; a black man held most powerful office in the land, and still at the end of it blacks as a group were every bit as entitled, overconfident, obnoxious, violent and dumb as they had always been, maybe more so. A lot of people woke up and figured out that the problem wasn’t white racism, rather white racism was a reaction to a problem.

The end of the Obama presidency was analogous to the situation in those doomsday cults, where they decide the world will end on month X day X year X. And then that day comes and goes, and nothing has changed. Half the cult wakes up and realizes the whole thing was a charade and the other half doubles down and decides the prophecy failed because they didn’t pray hard enough or whatever. Hence the rise of the alt right and the loony left.

I hate to defend Barack Obama in any way but your characterization of the Obama raid photo is disingenuous.

In the words of Obama's immediate predecessor, Obama was "the decider."

Literally almost every tough decision a US president has had to make could be described as "a bunch of engaged white guys were running the show and [PotUS] was sorta off to the side, a spectator." All but the most foolish leaders surround themselves with wise advisors who know things that the leader doesn't know. Then the leader digests all the information and makes the ultimate decision. If the raid had failed, whom would the public have really blamed?

A weird thing about Obama as President was he didn't really know many people. He had this tiny circle of wealthy black friends from Chicago, and he avoided socializing with people who might know stuff and tell him gossip. For example, he played golf more than 300 times as President, but typically chose low level staffers to fill out his foursome, like his ski bum body man Marvin Somebody. Obama even played dozens of rounds of golf with Marvin the Ski Bum's brother, a complete nobody. Presumably, Obama liked golfing with guys who wouldn't try to tell him anything important.

consistent behavior: Obama was totally uneducated!

Guys like Nicholson are a staple at upper-class country clubs. Except most of them probably have more flaws or are more irritating for whatever reason. So Nicholson is apparently a real prize. He's a guy who you can lounge with at the country club without feeling like you're wasting your time with some jerk. That's probably a pretty hard act to pull off.

There are so many mediocre hangers-on in the upper class world that you've got to be discriminating if you're a real big shot. So I'm going to assume that Marvin Nicholson does indeed have a rare talent. He isn't just your standard douche in boat shoes.

It depicts a young girl arched on her back over the lap of her female teacher, whose hands are positioned on the girl as if to play her like a guitar …

    Thanks for sharing this.

I'm no fan of Obama and I'm plenty skeptical of his record in spite of all the blind adulation. Nevertheless so much of the oppositional rhetoric aimed at him seems like shallow partisanship or baseless paranoia.

Little details like this have certainly been mostly ignored; refreshing to get some authentic background to gain insight about what might be an incurious mind and a character that shies from real challenge.

    Appreciated.

I mean, Marvin Nicholson would seem like a pretty useful guy to have around as a subordinate who is also kind of a friend, but a friend you can ignore or send away when you are busy without him sulking about it, and who isn’t wheedling you for favors. He has, I’m guessing, kind of a sidekick personality, like the hero of a cowboy movie’s pal.

On the other hand, if you are president it would probably be better for you to use your time on the golf course getting to know important people who work for you or are in Congress or have interesting ideas and let Marvin caddy. Making him your playing partner for 500 or 1000 hours of your White House years is not very productive use of your time.

It depicts a young girl arched on her back over the lap of her female teacher, whose hands are positioned on the girl as if to play her like a guitar ...
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balthus#Young_adulthood

I'd argue against "sadistic", but the basic info is there to be seen and judged by everyone who wants to.

    “I’d argue against ‘sadistic’”

I can imagine something like that in a de Sade novel, though it’s probably be de Sade doing it, not some woman.

Normally I’d imagine more pain involved, but that hair-pulling looks like it could smart. Depends on how humiliating the girl takes it to be, as well.

But it’s close enough not to call for quibbling.

Marvin Nicholson is a huge guy. Look at him next to John Kerry, who is 6′ 4″.

From his bio at the Washington Post, he seems like a likeable nobody.

Nicholson was born to an American mother and a Canadian father. His father died when he was nine years old, leaving his mother to raise him in Toronto and on Vancouver Island. He had thoughts of getting an MBA and working on Bay Street, the center of Toronto’s financial district. Instead, he graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a degree in geography and worked odd jobs – at bars and golf courses – for a few years. “At one point, I was going to be a professional caddy,” Nicholson said. “That was my big life plan.”

In 1998, he left Vancouver and moved to Massachusetts after falling for a woman. “When I got to Boston, if you asked me who the two senators were from Massachusetts, I couldn’t have told you,” Nicholson said.

But in the fall of 2000, he came to Washington and took a job in Kerry’s office. In 2001, Nicholson became Kerry’s driver, and he joined the Senator’s 2004 presidential campaign as Kerry’s “body man.” “My business card reads: ‘Marvin Nicholson, Chief of Stuff,” Nicholson said.He kept Kerry well-stocked with pens, reading glasses and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, ordered the Senator’s breakfast and hung out with him at night.

Nicholson stayed in Kerry’s office after the 2004 election, but when the Massachusetts senator declined to run for president again in 2008, Obama’s campaign came calling. During the 2008 campaign, Nicholson worked not as a body man but as Obama’s national trip director and scheduler.

“I can’t help with policy, I don’t do press. When he wants a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, I’m ready.” That’s how Nicholson described his job for Kerry in 2004. For Obama, he is paid to be organized and keep Obama organized. But “personally, I’m one of the most disorganized people I’ve ever met,” Nicholson says.

Still, both candidates appreciated having Nicholson’s skills. He acted not only as a scheduler and sandwich chef, but also as a friend and confidante to both Democratic presidential candidates. His No. 1 job during the 2008 presidential campaign was keeping Obama on schedule, but “he [did] it with class, grace and courtesy,” Obama said. “If it hadn’t been for him, we would not be where we are.”

Balthus was a mischling who appeared ashamed of his maternal ancestry, making up various stories to hide it. He grew up in Paris with a Scottish nanny, and his parents spoke Polish and German. You can hardly blame him for having an identity crisis.

As with Utrillo's, Balthus's artist mother is better know for her lovers than for her work. After her marriage ended, she took up with Rainer Maria Rilke.

He is a man of the path of least resistance. He was a good tool of the Left, he was good for MIC, he was good for spooks. As you said, he didn’t care about anything but base-level pleasures, his golf, and his brackets, football and celebrities when they turned up. When you don’t care, that leaves the mice to scurry about. We doubled down on the wars, the reverse racism, the domestic spying, if we didn’t double government, I don’t know how. Obama simply didn’t care about anything but looking and sounding good.

These days? Late on his manuscripts, even rough drafts, no notes, he’s going to have an issue with his publisher. They put up a 60 million dollar advance for his and Moochelle’s story. So far, nothing forthcoming. Also, before all the Podesta Brothers’ scandals popped up to occupy Podesta, a major gripe and impediment to Podesta’s planning for November 2017 going into 2018 was where’s Baraq? Available to speak, to campaign? Crickets. Main complaint? Baraq is sitting home, smoking dope and if you want to see him, he’s a full-on member at Woodmont CC, you’ll find him there.

Sounds to me like he’s all finished. Dough in the bank, pension, speech-dough, he got paid 60 million for a book he’s never going to write, Moochelle is never around (what’s better than that?), but he’s low-T so no sexual scandals are coming to this guy. He doesn’t even care about sex. Best for him, he has a decent golf course to spend his days on.

Guys like Nicholson are a staple at upper-class country clubs. Except most of them probably have more flaws or are more irritating for whatever reason. So Nicholson is apparently a real prize. He’s a guy who you can lounge with at the country club without feeling like you’re wasting your time with some jerk. That’s probably a pretty hard act to pull off.

There are so many mediocre hangers-on in the upper class world that you’ve got to be discriminating if you’re a real big shot. So I’m going to assume that Marvin Nicholson does indeed have a rare talent. He isn’t just your standard douche in boat shoes.

  85. The Clintons never cared about rapes that happened to others. Hell, they perpetrated and between them covered up enough of their own. Could be they figured Harvey had his women under control the same way the Clintons always did. Monica Lewinski got away from the Clintons however and one wonders why and whether there was Jewish animus there. Goldman and the rest of them, was there never a discussion among them along the terms of “That son of a bitch, humiliating one of OURS”? Never? The one that got away the Clintons however, didn’t break the gates. Trump being elected doesn’t explain to me the madness of destroying liberal icons, either. Whatever, they wrote reams of sexual harassment statutes before and after Monica and still, decades later, Capitol Hill, the ultimate Federal workplace, is a cesspool. Hollywood is a cesspool. The military, don’t even get me started. Business, too

The NYT is a complicity machine in covering for his naiveté and bad decision making.

Essentially, his daughter interned for The Worst Mentor In The Whole US, and she could have gone anywhere.

It's like Hillary setting up her bff Huma with Weiner.

In that whole, giant NYT piece, the closest they get to mentioning this little tidbit about POTUS daughter is:

Mr. Weinstein’s political activity — he provided consistent support for Mr. Obama as well — boosted his image as a man with friends in high places and close ties to the country’s leading female politician. It is not clear if rumors of his record of sexual misconduct had ever reached them.

I hope it is clear. Because if those rumors did reach Obama and he still said okay to the deal...

Anyway, this is what he did for his own daughter. Eventually we will know more about the deals he did for the US.

I imagine that some security people would have checked out Malia’s employer and decided there were no red flags. Not his type, not super-attractive, and even Harvey would surely know better.

If I read these comments about Nicholson correctly, he can best be explained as Anyone’s Ed McMahon, or by the continuing relationship between Canada the USA. Maybe this role really should be officially designated to Canadians, they have so much experience in it.

I wish I had the personality of this guy, life would have been much easier.

Other than that party, the only concrete example of anything interesting seems to be her prediction that a Justin Timberlake album would be popular.

Yours is the only explanation that makes sense to me.

Weinstein’s behavior was really extremely well-known for a very long time, not only among people in the entertainment industry but among people who merely knew people in the entertainment industry. It’s hard to emphasize enough how widespread this knowledge was. (Same with Charlie Rose, by the way.)

It’s genuinely inconceivable that President Obama wouldn’t have gotten some inkling of Weinstein’s MO. So unless Obama was prostituting his daughter, which seems very unlikely, he must not have cared.

The painter Balthus has been dead for 16 years, but his art is posthumously harassing women to this day:

Balthus is just a text book example of the Jewish Ordeal of Civility. His work looses its ability to shock or harass once one is aware of what is going on.

Likewise the Weinstein scandal does not shock those who are red pilled about the JQ.

Balthus is just a text book example of the Jewish Ordeal of Civility.

Balthus was a mischling who appeared ashamed of his maternal ancestry, making up various stories to hide it. He grew up in Paris with a Scottish nanny, and his parents spoke Polish and German. You can hardly blame him for having an identity crisis.

He could have been a lot worse - war with Syria and Iran (and maybe Russia) with McCain and/or Hillary. And he learned from Hillary's Libya fiasco enough to avoid Syria.

His race-baiting during the Trayvon/Gentle Giant/BLM years was the worst thing. So much for those who thought electing a black President would improve race relations.

    The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

wren, you linked this article from Vanity Fair article datelined January 20, 2017: Malia Obama’s Next Move: An Internship with Harvey Weinstein. It’s short and well worth reading, as it offers a great “eve of the storm” picture of how New York/Hollywood insiders chose to present Weinstein to their readers:

…Clearly, there’ll be a lot more for [Malia] to learn at the Weinstein Company: Harvey Weinstein is a notorious mover and shaker in Hollywood, a comeback kid whose producing prowess and reputation for waging fierce Oscar campaigns has inspired admiration, envy, and every other emotion on the spectrum. (His former assistant Leslye Headland, now a successful screenwriter and director in her own right, wrote a scathing 2008 play based in part on her experience working for Weinstein, called Assistance.)

Better still is the “scathing 2008 play” link, which is to a February 28, 2012 interview of Ms. Headland by Entertainment Weekly reporter Aubrey D’Arminio.

Back to the topic of the original post, and Weinstein’s complicity machine. Today’s NYT probably didn’t brighten Ms. Headland’s day.

The 31-year-old NYU graduate insists that Assistance… is not a tell-all about her former boss, as much as it’s an exploration into the minds of executive assistants… The play asks why they do what they do, and why they often do it for so long (Headland herself worked at Miramax and the Weinstein Company for six years). But just try watching a play in which one downtrodden assistant is shoved out of a gypsy cab — and then run over by the same cab — and not think of the notoriously temperamental [sic] Weinstein…

Entertainment Weekly: It did seem that you were criticizing the assistants for getting stuck in the cycle of abuse more than their boss for inflicting it.

Leslye Headland: Yeah, it’s more about the assistants than the boss…

EW: So, it’s the exact opposite of The Devil Wears Prada.

LH: [While watching the movie,] I was thinking, “This is really stressful.” I was also like, “I could’ve gotten [Meryl Streep’s character] out of that situation.” I was like, “You can get her out of there in the middle of a hurricane. You just have to work harder!” That’s what I mean: It’s that mentality that is more interesting to me than what is the most outlandish thing a boss can ask for.

… I was like, “No, [being an exec. assistant at Miramax is] not that interesting of a world.” As far as it being autobiographical, none of that stuff ever happened. I’m so not afraid of it because it’s not true. It’s all stuff that I made up and thought would be funny. Actually working for Harvey was very educational and cool, but it was pretty boring.

EW: So do you get the sense that kids graduating from college these days now simply expect to be treated horribly at their first jobs — that they seem to naturally accept the Swimming With Sharks or Horrible Bosses lifestyle?

LH: That it’s a cultural thing now? Absolutely… if you’re leaving school and you’re expecting to be treated horribly, one of the things that [my] play asks is: Why? What do you think about your self? Nick and Nora’s fatal flaw is that they think that it’s just being around this guy that’s going get them what they want as opposed to going out and getting it themselves…

It would be interesting to see a chart of the economic background of the women Harvey went after. My guess is you'll find their backgrounds to top off at upper middle class with none coming from families with a dad who is a major power player or high up in law enforcement or the deep state.

I would be surprised if the upper echolans of the elite have to worry about someone like Harvey targeting their children no matter what age for weird sex stuff. Even someone as deranged as Weinstein would likely not want to risk having an even higher status person gunning for him over molesting a daughter or son. Case in point: Malia.

(Is Wikipedia guilty too, just for posting Guitar Lesson? Is that particular piece in [ahem] A minor?)

On the bright side, we can add Balthus to our list of Leap Day babies, along with Rossini, Tommy Dorsey, and Dinah Shore. Dinah's 25th birthday fell last year, as did Balthus's 27th.

That said I actually don't think he did anything particularly bad, at least compared to LBJ (Immigration bill) or Reagan (amnesty.) Race relations went sour during his presidency, but that wasn't because of something he did, but rather what he was.

We had eight years of a black president; a black man held most powerful office in the land, and still at the end of it blacks as a group were every bit as entitled, overconfident, obnoxious, violent and dumb as they had always been, maybe more so. A lot of people woke up and figured out that the problem wasn't white racism, rather white racism was a reaction to a problem.

The end of the Obama presidency was analogous to the situation in those doomsday cults, where they decide the world will end on month X day X year X. And then that day comes and goes, and nothing has changed. Half the cult wakes up and realizes the whole thing was a charade and the other half doubles down and decides the prophecy failed because they didn't pray hard enough or whatever. Hence the rise of the alt right and the loony left.

I hate to defend Barack Obama in any way but your characterization of the Obama raid photo is disingenuous.

In the words of Obama’s immediate predecessor, Obama was “the decider.”

Literally almost every tough decision a US president has had to make could be described as “a bunch of engaged white guys were running the show and [PotUS] was sorta off to the side, a spectator.” All but the most foolish leaders surround themselves with wise advisors who know things that the leader doesn’t know. Then the leader digests all the information and makes the ultimate decision. If the raid had failed, whom would the public have really blamed?

Has anyone considered the possibility that Weinstein DID make creepy, unwanted advances at Malia, that her parents found out about it, and that it was Pres. (or Mrs.) Obama who, in retaliation, gave the New York Times the go ahead to bring ruin on a major Dem donor by publishing a story it had previously withheld?

The fact that such an exposure would also be a shot across the bow directed at the Clintons might be an additional incentive for the Obamas.

Malia was not Harvey’s type. She had nothing to worry about.

Yeah, I can see the conversation between loving parents now:

“Ward, Harvey Weinstein is a known serial rapist and sexual harasser. Maybe we should rethink letting Malia intern with him?”

“I thought about that, June, but then I realized Malia isn’t Harvey’s type; very few of his victims have been non-White, and Malia’s only 35% White.”

“Oh, I didn’t know. Thanks for indulging an overprotective mother. I’ll go pack her things.”

How crazy would Weinstein be to mess with Obama’s daughter? Actresses? Who cares? On the other hand, presidents daughters might not make the best victims.

    Loving parental conversation, part deux:

“Oh, and June; even if Harvey the rapist/harasser is into Malia, he knows the consequences for messing with her would be severe.”

Yeah, this all sounds like totally normal thinking from loving parents. Makes perfect sense.

Either he knew that Harvey wouldn’t have the guts to try anything or she wasn’t Harvey’s type.

Or *drum roll* he didn’t know about Harvey because he was a stuffed shirt living in a cocoon. No, it doesn’t make sense. Yes, it makes more sense than the alternatives. Alternatively, the Obamas aren’t loving parents.

I imagine that some security people would have checked out Malia’s employer and decided there were no red flags. Not his type, not super-attractive, and even Harvey would surely know better.

Several of the women accusing Harvey aren’t super-attractive, either. As for consequences, I think it’s obvious by now that Harvey can’t control himself.

Gwyneth's dad Bruce was a producer of St Elsewhere. Her dad was also a well connected Jew and a Democratic activist. Did he ever run his own casting couch???

Here’s how the Narrative is spinning Weinstein would still be Weinsteining if Hillary was President:

President Trump claimed in a tweet last month that Time magazine told him he would likely be named Person of the Year. But the magazine’s selection turned out to be, essentially, the opposite of Trump: The women and men speaking out about sexual misconduct.

Time dubbed these people “silence breakers” on a cover unveiled Wednesday, and some attributed their silence breaking to the president.

“I have real doubts about whether we’d be going through this if Hillary Clinton had won, because I think that President Trump’s election, in many ways, was a setback for women,” said NBC’s Megyn Kelly, the former Fox News host who last year accused former Fox chairman Roger Ailes of sexual harassment in a book. She added that “the overall message” of Trump’s victory “was that we don’t really matter.”

Simple, please edit your comment. Replace “white racism” with “white exhaustion.” Thank you.

Or maybe he knew Harv doesn’t stick his pickle into the dark side of the pool. I never took Harv as one w jungle fever…..

Pilt, thanks for the story of Marvin, but please note that he and Kerry are standing on different elevations. Check the shadows.

We call that the "girl on the internet" phenomenon. Or just "girl in the room." If this were just about her getting writing jobs, or even her own show, that'd be one thing.

But Girl in the Room can't explain Lena Dunham's place in Vanity Fair-type circles, or in national politics. Not high politics, admittedly, but celebrity politics.

I mean, NYT articles aren't written about the special insights on stories of the day from the perapective of your average Hollywood office turnstyle. Unless they actually happened to witness something newsworthy (and in line with the Narrative). But that's not the case here, obviously. It's more like, "What do *you* think, interesting person?"

guest, Lena’s place in Vanity Fair circles explained from my days of bar hopping and tuna fishing. Me to my friend….”Look at those two at the bar. Mine is hot, yours is not.”

…without putting much long-term planning into what he’d be doing in five years.

I’ve never found planning what I’d be doing in five years to be much use. The inevitable never happens and the unexpected constantly occurs.

My guess is that Lena Dunham is sort of a counterpoint to Harvey Weinstein: a girl who makes friends and influences people by being extremely sexually available with a minimum of drama within a geographic and cultural milieu (Old Money Manhattan, Oberlin) that affords her opportunities to get noticed beyond any actual achievements.

It’s simpler than that. She has family connections and she’s a half-member of the tribe. And for some reason single female SWPLs love her show.

    Weinstein’s Complicity Machine

This is the real story that has been ignored so far. I didn’t see anybody covering this angle during the Cosby revelations other than a few reports of a facilities manager at NBC’s studios admitting to sending money orders to scorned Cosby’s gals under his own name.

The heads of both NBC and CBS had to be running interference for the Cos at least throughout the 1980′s-1990′s, while others just ignored it. The complicated machinery put in place for protecting celeb rapists, gropers and pedos from public exposure is the part conspiracy that can be extended the entire corrupt “government-media complex”.

Brad Pitt himself is no stranger to the casting couch.

    Thought that myself.

Stefan Molyneux had and interview with an ex-actor who admitted to being sexually harassed.

I think a big problem Hollywood has is that it is hard for cis-gendered stale pale males not imagining last couple of generations of actors not being sexually harassed early in their careers.

Where is the John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Jimmy Stewart or Clint Eastwood of today???

I hate to defend Barack Obama in any way but your characterization of the Obama raid photo is disingenuous.

In the words of Obama's immediate predecessor, Obama was "the decider."

Literally almost every tough decision a US president has had to make could be described as "a bunch of engaged white guys were running the show and [PotUS] was sorta off to the side, a spectator." All but the most foolish leaders surround themselves with wise advisors who know things that the leader doesn't know. Then the leader digests all the information and makes the ultimate decision. If the raid had failed, whom would the public have really blamed?

Lol. Have the public or press EVER blamed anything on Obama?

Has anyone considered the possibility that Weinstein DID make creepy, unwanted advances at Malia, that her parents found out about it, and that it was Pres. (or Mrs.) Obama who, in retaliation, gave the New York Times the go ahead to bring ruin on a major Dem donor by publishing a story it had previously withheld?

The fact that such an exposure would also be a shot across the bow directed at the Clintons might be an additional incentive for the Obamas.

This is a plausible hypothesis. I like Michelle as the mover. She’s the Obama who’s more likely to want to stab the Hillary machine in the back, and clear space on the left for their successors.

But as the days go by, the reasoning and motivations behind the whole mess remain obscured in the fog — or, I guess right now in SoCal, in the smoke.

They sure as hell are a mystery to me.

This seems related to Sailer’s Law of Female Journalism: if Lena Dunham, a woman for whom a full burqa would be an improvement, can be considered “interesting” and “fashionable,” then virtually any woman can reach those august heights.

    Talk about “defining deviancy down.”
